The RSA gang reached 500 subscribers, just hitting 800 as of recent, now they get to give you the fans a treat! One of the most iconic Walt Disney animated movies, Robin Hood! The gang promised you a Disney movie to celebrate hitting 500 subs, and they now are promising more Disney movies to come. Robin Hood is a 1973 American animated musical adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. Produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is based on the English folktale "Robin Hood". The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian. The film features the voices of Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Peter Ustinov, Pat Buttram, Monica Evans, Terry-Thomas, Roger Miller, and Carole Shelley. The idea to adapt Robin Hood into an animated feature was dated back to Walt Disney's interest in the tale of Reynard the Fox following the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The idea was repeatedly shelved for several decades. In 1968, Ken Anderson pitched a film adaptation of Robin Hood, incorporating ideas from Reynard the Fox by using anthropomorphic animals rather than humans. The project was approved, becoming the first completely "post-Walt" animated feature and the first with an entirely non-human cast. Robin Hood was released on November 8, 1973. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was nonetheless a box-office success, grossing $33 million worldwide against a production budget of $5 million. Although some retrospective reviews have called out its use of recycled animation, the film's reputation has grown positively over time and has since become a cult classic.

The 16th Century Legend of Robin Hood

William Shakespeare refers to the legend of Robin Hood in his play, As You Like it with the old Duke exiled to the Forest of Arden with a group of Merry Men who “live like the old Robin Hood of England” (Act I, scene i). In his play, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Shakespeare again mentions the Robin Hood legend when an outlaw exclaims “By the bare scalp of Robin Hood's fat friar.” The accompanying characters of the Robin Hood story find their place in Shakespeare's plays, when in Henry IV Part I and Henry IV Part 2 Falstaff talks about Maid Marian and Falstaff's companion Justice Silence sings a song about “And Robin Hood, Scarlet, and John.” What these references tell us is that the legend of Robin Hood was an active part of the history of William Shakespeare and the pop culture of the time period to whom he was writing. But the legend of Robin Hood is quite fluid throughout history with it being used as a symbol for good as well as a symbol for insurrection and a general debate about who he was, whether he was based on a real person, and whether he was a hero or a villain. Here today to tell us about the history of Robin Hood from Shakespeare's lifetime is our guest and expert Robin Hood historian, Allen Wright.   Get bonus episodes on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Squeeze was unlike any other band, though quintessentially English. They appeared in that “Post-Punk” “Power-Pop” era of the early 80s, and definitely shared some sinister lyrical themes with such contrarian contemporaries as Elvis Costello, but their tunes were always delivered in such a quirkily upbeat style that any ill intent was mitigated.  Also, the themes were just obscure enough, so that I never was really sure what I was singing along with.Pulling Mussels is one of those infectious pop enigmas, and, even though I never knew exactly what it was saying, (William Tell? Maid Marian?) its jaunty images of a seaside holiday resort aligned so endearingly with my memories of family outings in Atlantic City, NJ: (Lobster at Hackney's, taffy, the carnival atmosphere of the boardwalk, the brackish sparkle of the Atlantic Ocean….), that I embraced its charms immediately and wholeheartedly. I read on the internet that the term “Pulling Mussels” refers to sexual encounters. Another blogging pundit said it's about masturbation. Perhaps. But to the 10 year old me in the lobster bib, getting ready to crack open a crustacean's claw, it's an incantation, conjuring up a world of pre-pubescent wonderment.

We all know the story. England is divided along Norman and Saxon lines. A young noble returns home only to learn his father has lost his lands and title, merely because he's Saxon. The Regent Prince John is supposedly taking these rash actions to pay a ransom for his captured, crusader brother: Richard the Lion Hearted. However, John is taxing and levying not to raise the ransom, but to enrich himself and consolidate his power. Robin becomes a rebellious outlaw, forming a group of merry men and providing a safe haven for Saxons within Sherwood Forest. He becomes a folk herp to the people, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. At the same time, he meets a Norman noble, Maid Marian, and they fall in love. At a critical juncture, Richard returns to England and sees the havoc his brother has wrought, while revealing he was not ransomed. John is undone. Robin is restored. Richard re-takes his throne and it's a brighter day for Norman Saxon relations. But, is any of it true? If so, which parts are true and which are false? And how are Templars related? Archeologist, author, featured expert on "Ancient Aliens", and three time guest, Mark Olly, has the answers for us. Did I mention templars? Yeah, we get a great primer on them as well.

Over the past few years I've been delved into many different adaptations of Robin Hood and even a good handful that have centered around Maid Marian, and while each one has been unique in its own way, the Forest Wife trilogy by Theresa Tomlinson does stand apart from the others. In it can be felt the influence of ITV's 'Robin of Sherwood' from the 1980s, but also of the local folklore from her childhood, early Robin Hood ballads, and medieval history, but without losing the author's distinct, and decidedly feminist, voice. It was a pleasure talking with Theresa Tomlinson and I hope that you enjoy my interview where we delve into her influences and the themes of her novels. The author's website: https://theresatomlinson.com/ An earlier interview on her work from Allen Wright of boldoutlaw.com:https://www.boldoutlaw.com/robint/tomlinson1.html Into the Greenwood is produced by Thaddeus Papke Theme music is by Plastic3For more from Into the Greenwood:www.instagram.com/intogreenwood/twitter.com/intogreenwoodwww.facebook.com/intogreenwoodTo support the podcast go to:www.patreon.com/IntoGreenwoodorwww.buymeacoffee.com/intogreenwoodOur selected charity: Trees, Water & Peopleintogreenwood@gmail.com

From earliest childhood, girls are taught to obsess over weddings as the one thing in common we'll ever have with a Disney princess. We talk about women and weddings, the cult of the Chill Bride, and whether wedding cynicism has gone too far. It's a real mish-mash today: we talk Friends, Abigail Again, Emma Bunton, Father of the Bride, Maid Marian, Richard Curtis and much more. Lauren Bravo is the author of How To Break Up with Fast Fashion and the forthcoming novel Pre-Loved. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Before he was the Mariner, and before he was the Bodyguard, Kevin Costner brought his distinctly American accent to 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. After returning to England from the Crusades with Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman, Robin of Locksley discovers his father murdered and his ancestral home lying in ruins. He quickly learns from Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as the Maid Marian, that the villainous Alan Rickman, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, is seizing power in a bid for King Richard's throne. Robin takes to the trees alongside the Merry Men of Sherwood forest to rob the rich, give to the poor, and save England from the Sheriff's machinations.

It so happens that this year marks the bicentennial of the publication of one the very first works of historical fiction in the English language, the short novel "Maid Marian" by Thomas Love Peacock.Through a bit of delightful coincidence, this bicentennial will see the release of a new movie that takes the surprisingly rare tack of focusing on Maid Marian. I was delighted to have the opportunity to sit down with the film's director Bill Thomas and the film's star Sophie Craig to discuss their process in creating the film, bringing some long overdue attention to Maid Marian, and what it was like to make an action adventure film during Covid lockdowns. For more on the film, including the trailer:The Adventures of Maid Marian For free ebooks via the Gutenberg Project of Maid Marian by Thomas Love Peacockhttps://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/966For the earlier episode that focused on the origin and earlier interpretations of Maid Marian:To All the Marians I Have Known with Emily J.
