During a time in which social justice efforts for adult professionals are silenced, we welcome the iconic Jessica Stoya to discuss the globalization of the adult film industry and its impact on adult industry professionals. Along with discussing historical events that have led to changes in the adult industry, we discuss some of the hurdles that adult performers experience in their personal life that put their basic needs for food and shelter in jeopardy. These hurdles exist due to right wing, sex negative influences in our culture and can result in, for example, the performer being “unbanked” meaning that the performer may have trouble finding and keeping a bank that will allow them to have an account and other banking fundamentals, or they may be refused housing when looking to rent or buy property which can lead to a very real fear of homelessness. This all sounds heavy, but Stoya's impromptu Les Mis musical parody makes it all worth the emotional labor. Trust me. Then, we go on to discuss Stoya's bold career transition from mostly being an adult performer to focusing on writing and being an intimacy coach for Pam Shaffer's clinic Best Self Psych. This is a fascinating and important episode, especially if you care about adult performers' rights. We hope you join us as once again as we dare to Open Deeply. Stoya's Bio: Jessica Stoya has been working with sexuality since 2006. Her writing on the subject has appeared in The New York Times, VICE, Playboy, and many other publications. She, along with Rich Juzwiak, pens Slate's How To Do It sex advice column. Her first book, Philosophy, Pussycats, & Porn, has been published in English, and Spanish, Russian and Serbian translations. She completed her Ante Up! Professional Development certification in 2021, and has begun an undergraduate degree studying philosophy. Jessica Stoya recently joined Best Self Psych as a certified sexuality coach. Famed photographer Ellen Stagg describes her work as photographing women of all levels of dress undress, empowering women, and celebrating and collaborating with them through her photography. Ellen's lifelong interest in photography began in high school in Connecticut with a senior-level photography course. She attended the prestigious School of Visual Arts, graduating with a BFA. At the end of her junior year at SVA, Stagg signed with her first agent and immediately began shooting commercial content for magazines, advertising, fashion, and exclusive clientele. Ellen's fashion and commercial work has appeared in Life, Vibe, Interview, Maxim, Flaunt, I-D, Inked, Penthouse, Time Out, Teen Vogue, and film and TV. Her subjects, drawn from acting, music, and sports, include Scarlett Johansson, Moby, Tony Hawk, Heidi Fleiss, Redman, Good Charlotte, and Geena Rocero. A complete list of her clients is at EllenStagg.com. The turning point in her career came when Ellen met porn star/actress Justine Joli, who was searching for a photographer to create content for her site. Through Joli, she met other women from the industry and continued to explore more erotic subject matter but ran into difficulty while looking for places to showcase her work. Deemed too "porn" for her commercial work and too "artsy" for porn sites, Ellen started her own website, Staggstreet.com, which brought her more notoriety and opened doors for TV work and art exhibits. Ellen was spotlighted in a ten-episode web series shot by The Independent Film Channel called "The Stagg Party". Filmed and directed by Joe Swanberg, the series received critical kudos. She then moved on to shoot/produce and star in 2 seasons of Playboy TV's "Badass," photographing models doing badass activities like cliff diving, riding horses, and driving a tracker, all in the nude while Ellen interviewed them. Ellen also starred in KarmaloopTV KarmaloopTV.com, "Behind the Lens," shooting and interviewing her models, including Stoya, Lily Labeau, Shay Laren, Kacie Marie and more. Ellen has exhibited her fine art film images at art galleries worldwide. She has shown her work at Fuse Gallery, Parlor Gallery, Stephen Romano, Morbid Anatomy, Gallery, Brooklyn, Mighty Tanaka, and Scope Art Fair. Her work is regularly featured on the covers and pages of Hustler and Taboo magazines. Ellen received three wins and numerous nominations from the AltStar Awards. New and Notable: August 2022 Edition. We're sharing high profile crime stories told from the perspective of the journalists who covered them, an investigation into the secrets behind the multi-billion dollar porn industry, and an ode to scent. Featuring: True Crime Byline: "True Crime is one of the most popular genres in podcasting. Every year big studios release dozens of high production series about gruesome crimes and real-life scams. But before those stories become podcasts, most of the time, there's a dogged reporter doing the hard work of bringing them to light. True Crime Byline interviews the reporters who cover these crimes, and ask them what it was actually like to sit in courtrooms, chase down leads, get to know family members and talk to witnesses." Hot Money: "This series seeks to uncover the inner workings of the business side of the modern porn industry. The internet undeniably had a massive impact on shifting the way porn was distributed. In this first episode, Patricia Nilsson and Alex Barker of the Financial Times speak with sex performer Stoya about how this shift into tube sites, like Pornhub, changed things for her — and how the owners of tube sites are not subjected to the same stigmas." Welcome to Provincetown: "Welcome to Provincetown follows the stories of seven people over the course of a summer in the iconic LGBTQ community of Provincetown, Massachusetts. In this clip, host Mitra Kaboli introduces us to Qya Cristal, a local drag queen." Off Leash: "Dogs are, above all, creatures of the nose. What can they sniff out, and what can we learn about smelling by following them? Alexandra Horowitz talks to a detection-dog handler and a food critic about olfaction, then puts some Freakonomics hosts' noses to the test." Dear Old Dads: "Hey kids, get ON our lawn! Dear old Dads is a podcast examining and deconstructing all things Dad. From parenting to patriarchy; manning the grill to manning up; Dear Old Dads asks – what even is a dad anyway? What does it mean to be a good man in today's world? What should it mean? Listen along as we definitely find the correct, concise answers to all these questions and more, with hosts and dads Eli Bosnick, Thomas Smith, and Tom Curry." Bilemma 2: Being “straight passing”, misgendering, biphobia, and exclusion in the queer community. Bilemma 3: Dating/asking out a friend. Bilemma 4: Having sex while drunk, regretting a sexual experience, virginity, consent, and sex. Bilemma 5: Discussions of genitals/vulvas/vaginas, sexual health, transphobia, body shaming and sex, HRT, transitioning, body image issues, dysmorphia, bottom surgery, medical interventions, racism, and transphobia in the NHS. This last question was sent in by a woman about her own relationship to her body/vagina/vulva and the bodies of other women, so there was a focus on women and body image but I definitely want to use more gender neutral language when talking about these issues, and I hope that the discussion was inclusive although we did focus on women. Former co-host Sean and Beer Geek Brett join us in our first show back in the studio since the Thanksgiving break. So much news to cover from the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting, San Bernadino shooting, a woman banging dogs, and a special 2 hour edition of Harvey's Headlines, with a new Harvey's Headlines song! All this before Joe can mute everyone on the show. We started with the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting, where Carly Fiorino started the rumor is that Planned Parenthood was selling baby parts. We debated if this attack is called Terrorism or if its just being classified as a mass shooting. We googled the FBI's definition, which classifies it as terrorism, but the media is calling it a mass shooting. Charles claims that Planned Parenthood was getting shot up before 9/11, so it can't be classified as terrorism. We moved onto the San Bernadino shooting, After learning a bit about the attack, we devolve into racial debates and xenophobia. After the break, Dave spazzes out about the Christmas decorations, complaining if they were actually good, they'd be up all year. Dave brought in clips from Whitney Wisconsin, who made a Youtube video about why we should be able to have sex with our dogs. The reasons range from "they have tongues that can hit hard to reach places" and "you can't get pregnant," She even tricked people into smelling her fingers after she had put them inside of herself. We watched the trailer to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, and while nobody seemed to like the first movie, there is some hope since they are introducing Casey Jones and Beebop and Rocksteady and the trailer looks better than the first movie. We also watched the new Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, which gives away most of the plot and shows that Doomsday will be in the movie to unite Batman and Superman. Harvey's Headlines this week: Scott Weiland is died. Robert Loggia is died. 14 Year old arrested for punching a downs syndrome kid. Michael B Jordan popped on "Creed" set. BLM Protest Shooting Co-Worker fight turn ends with immolation. Donald Trump vs Bald Eagle Donald Trump bans Muslims. Donald Trump to shut down the internet. Stoya vs James Dean Obama called "Total Pussy" on live tv Music used in this week's episode: Black English - "Stay with Me" Cobra Starship - "Bring It" Stone Temple Pilots - "Interstate Love Song" You can listen to this week's episode on iTunes, Stitcher, and here:
