Assisterende klip: Anders EskeMusik: Bensound

Suzanne Morphew was reported missing from Maysville, Colorado, on May 10, 2020, Mother's Day. Her bicycle was found at the bottom of a ravine that evening.   As friends came forward and investigators learned more about Suzanne, the investigation pointed in one direction— to Suzanne's husband, Barry Morphew, who claims the two had a “perfect” marriage. Meanwhile, Suzanne was secretly documenting abuse and, by her friend's accounts, preparing to leave him and start a new life.   In a case that appeared to be open and shut, a DNA sample found in Suzanne's car put the prosecution's entire case in jeopardy, and some suspect that those involved with the prosecution were corrupt from the start.   After three long years, Suzanne's body was found on September 22, 2023, in a location that wasn't even on detectives' radar, leaving them to reinvestigate Suzanne's entire case. In April 2024, the results of her autopsy report revealed her death to be a homicide.   The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is asking anyone with information about Suzanne's disappearance to email cdps_suzannemorphew_tipline@state.co.us or call the tip line at 719-312-7530.   Listen to our original two-part coverage of Suzanne's case: Part 1: https://link.chtbl.com/J-zZ6ul6 Part 2: https://link.chtbl.com/yMt8ccqx   Thank you to our Sponsors! Australian mother Jasmine Thomas had been struggling following the pandemic.  She suffered from depression after the births of her two children and the pandemic made her increasingly paranoid.  One night in 2022, she told her husband that she was taking their two daughters to McDonald's.  After getting McDonald's, Jasmine drove her children to a remote area off the highway and set the vehicle on fire with her and the children inside.  All three of them died within minutes. Texas woman Savannah Kriger was going through a messy divorce with her husband Brian.  A custody hearing regarding their son Kaiden was scheduled in March 2024.  On the day of the hearing, Savannah went to Brian's home and destroyed every piece of clothing that he owned.  She then shot bullets through her wedding portraits and laid her wedding dresses out on the bed.  She picked up Kaiden from daycare and made him call Brian to say goodbye.  She then shot her son before taking her own life. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of two mothers who murder – Jasmine Thomas and Savannah Kriger.  Read our blog for these cases There have also been updates in two previously covered cases and we also discuss: The delay of Richard Allen's trial.  Richard is accused of killing Delphi teens Liberty German and Abigail Williams.  His trial was due to start in mid May and has now been pushed out to later in 2024. Suzanne Morphew's autopsy results have come back.  Suzanne went missing on Mother's Day in 2020 and her remains were found last year.  Suzanne's cause of death has been determined as “Homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine (BAM)  intoxication.”  BAM is a potent tranquilizer that only licensed veterinarians can prescribe.  Interestingly, Suzanne's husband Barry had access to BAM for hunting purposes. Suzanne Morphew's death has been ruled a homicide by undetermined means. The toxicology report shows several drugs found in her system at the time of her death: Butorphanol, a synthetic opioid pain-killer, Azaperone, a sedative commonly used as a tranquilizer for pigs and elephants, and medetomidine, a sedative that can decrease an animal's heart rate, commonly used by veterinarians. According to a 2021 affidavit, Barry Morphew admitted to police that he frequently used BAM and other tranquilizers to sedate deer to remove antlers for his hunting business. However, BAM is the commonly used abbreviation for Butophanol, Azaperaone, and Medetomidine. Azaperone is used as a sedative for Elephants, Rhinoceros, and Giraffes, while Medetomidine facilitates immobilization of large carnivores and great apes.   Police say in the recovery of Susanne Morphew's body, her favorite tee-shirt was pulled from the location.  And in the past few days, it's reported that husband Barry Morphew quietly slipped into an invite-only memorial for his murdered wife.  Joining Nancy Grace Today:  Tisha Leewaye, Friend of Suzanne Morphew  Dr. Grey Stafford  -  Host of the Podcast "Zoo Logic" - Wildlife Expert, Animal Trainer, Zoologist,  Book: "Zoomility: Keeper Tales of Training with Positive Reinforcement"  Mark Tate  -  Trial Lawyer / Legal Analyst - Tate Law Group- TateLawGroup.com   Chris McDonough -  Director At the Cold Case Foundation, Former Homicide Detective, Host of YouTube channel- ‘The Interview Room', ColdCaseFoundation.org Joseph Scott Morgan -  Professor of Forensics: Jacksonville State University, Author, "Blood Beneath My Feet", Host: "Body Bags with Joseph Scott Morgan", Twitter: @JoScottForensic Lauren Conlin -  Investigative journalist, Host of The Outlier Podcast. Sheryl McCollum and Nancy Grace dive into the Suzanne Morphew case, providing their insights and opinions on the evidence and potential suspects. Although Barry Morphew has not been named a suspect or person of interest, Nancy Grace explains why the evidence points towards him. The autopsy results revealed that Suzanne had been shot with animal tranquilizers, and a tranquilizer cap was found in the Morphew's dryer. Barry had initially suggested that Suzanne went out for a bike ride and was possibly eaten by a mountain lion, but this theory is highly unlikely. The investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing. The student protests happening across the country have moved into a new phase. Demonstrators are not only setting up tent cities on campuses, but they are now moving inside - taking over school buildings. As Les Trent reports, some are barricading themselves in using school furniture and zip ties. And a grandmother was home watching the Taylor Swift concert movie with her four-year-old granddaughter when a home invader burst in. However, he picked the wrong lady to mess with - she had a gun. As Jim Moret reports, the granny was not charged and instead of being taken to jail the bad guy went to the hospital. Plus, Police and fish and wildlife officials are investigating a situation in which party goers on a boat were filmed dumping their trash into the ocean. Within minutes of this video going viral, outraged citizen sleuths were posting information about the boat and its owner to speed up the investigation! And four years after she went missing on a Mother's Day bike ride, toxicology results are in for Suzanne Morphew...and it's now confirmed she had an animal tranquilizer in her system. Investigators did find a dart gun and empty darts in her husband's gun case - but he has always maintained that he is innocent says those items were for hunting. An autopsy report released Monday by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally shed light on the mysterious death of Suzanne Morphew, a Colorado mom who vanished in May 2020. According to the autopsy conducted by the El Paso County coroner, Suzanne Morphew's death was classified as homicide caused by intoxication from drugs commonly used to sedate wildlife, with no physical trauma observed on her body. Suzanne Morphew, 49, disappeared while on a bike ride near her home in Chaffee County. Her case remained cold until her remains were unexpectedly discovered last September in Moffat, Colorado, approximately 90 minutes south of her last known location. The remains were found during an unrelated investigation. The autopsy identified the substances leading to her death as butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine—drugs typically marketed as a compounded injectable chemical immobilizer for wildlife. "These findings suggest a deeply troubling scenario behind Suzanne's disappearance and death," stated the autopsy report. Her husband, Barry Morphew, who was previously charged with her murder in 2021, had those charges dropped just before his trial in April 2022 due to insufficient evidence. Since then, no new arrests have been made in connection with Suzanne's death. "The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne's death," said CBI Director Chris Schaefer. In a statement issued through their attorney, the Morphew family described the profound impact of the case on their lives, emphasizing the distress caused by the false accusations against Barry Morphew and the lack of closure. "The Morphews are left with more questions than answers and a lack of justice for Suzanne, the family, and the community," the statement read. Adding to the complexity of the case, Suzanne Morphew's clothes and a weathered bullet were found alongside her remains. Barry Morphew and his daughters Macy and Mallory have publicly criticized the investigation's narrow focus and claimed that authorities have not provided information about whether the bullet or the clothing was tested for DNA evidence. In May 2023, Barry Morphew and his daughters spoke out in an ABC News interview after filing a lawsuit against the prosecutors, accusing them of wrongful charges. "They've got tunnel vision and they looked at one person and they've got too much pride to say they're wrong and look somewhere else," Barry Morphew said. "I don't have anything to worry about. I've done nothing wrong." The case continues to attract significant public interest, with many hoping that the new autopsy findings will lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Meanwhile, the community and the Morphew family await justice for Suzanne, whose life was tragically cut short under mysterious and alarming circumstances. Suzanne Morphew was reported missing from Maysville, Colorado, on May 10, 2020, Mother's Day. Her bicycle was found at the bottom of a ravine that evening.   As friends came forward and investigators learned more about Suzanne, the investigation pointed in one direction— to Suzanne's husband Barry Morphew, who claims the two had a “perfect” marriage.
