The science of cadence, torque and power in cycling performance | Peter Leo (Team Jayco-Alula)

That Triathlon Show

Torque and cadence are common features of cycling training programs, but how should you really train them to get the most out of your training? Peter Leo is a sports scientist and high-performance coach working across cycling (Team Jayco-Alula, Cycling Australia) and triathlon (coach of high-level short-course athletes), and since he's personally researched this topic, and applied it at the highest level, he's a perfect guest to answer this question. We also discuss training principles, including debunking some common misconceptions and mistakes made when applying training principles in practice.  HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS:  The science behind the torque-cadence relationship Torque and cadence are performance limiters at different points on the power-duration curve Practical application of the science in different contexts (track and road cycling, short and long course triathlon), including specific workout examples Peter's view on three core training principles… Individualisation. What are the biggest factors behind needs to individualise training? Is individualisation overrated in certain contexts?  Specificity. Is there an over emphasis on race specificity, compared to maximising core physiological capacities and general skills?  Progression. What does effective progression really look like in triathlon and cycling training? Are amateur cyclists and triathletes adopting too aggressive progression rates?  Evaluating response to training, AI and coaching, and Peter's top tips for the listeners to improve their cycling and triathlon performance.  DETAILED EPISODE SHOWNOTES:  We have detailed shownotes for all of our episodes. The shownotes are basically the podcast episode in written form, that you can read in 5-10 minutes. They are not transcriptions, but they are also not just surface-level overviews. They provide detailed insights and timestamps for each episode, and are great especially for later review, after you've already listened to an episode.  The shownotes for today's episode can be found at https://scientifictriathlon.com/tts686/ LINKS AND RESOURCES:  Peter's ResearchGate Power profiling, critical power, and U23 cycling research with Peter Leo | EP#319 - Peter's previous appearance on That Triathlon Show (January 2022) Rethinking Endurance Training: Insights from Peter Leo - Peter's appearance on Joel Filliol's podcast WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NEXT? Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! The Tour de France is a beast! A beautiful beast. It is the biggest annual sporting event in the world. Cycling fan or not, everyone knows about the Tour de France.  When I was a professional it was obviously a marked goal for all the guys in the peloton. An achievement to simply get to the start line. Although never having ridden the Tour myself, the last couple of years I have been able to to visit the race from the inside – as a journalist with media eyes on. Working with my old mates from The Cycling Podcast last year and over these first 7 days of the Tour de France 2022 I have been able to absorb the energy the Tour gives to everyone who is a part of it. I wanted to try to take you, as listeners, backstage. To speak to as many different people around the start and finish lines as I could. To try to paint the whole picture for you – that, even if you've never been on the sidelines, allows you to understand why so many people want to flock to witness this race pass by.  But most of all, I wanted take you inside the red tape, into the paddock with the buses, on course at the start/finish line, up close and personal to chat to riders and staff to hear what their experiences are from day to day travelling on tour. Join me as I make my way through the first week of the Tour de France 2022 – from the Grand Depart in Denmark, to the cobbles of Roubaix and then to the first mountain climbs of the race. It's an episode jam-packed with guests and I hope you feel like you're right there at Le Tour with me! Big thanks to all those who gave me their time and insight while on the busy race: Gregory Rast (DS Trek Segafredo), Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Mat Hayman (Team BikeExchange), Luke Durbridge (Team BikeExchange), Nick Schultz (Team BikeExchange), Neil Stephens (DS UAE Team Emirates), Matti Breschel (DS EF Education First), Simon Clarke (Israel Premier Tech), Zak Dempster (Israel Premier Tech), Michael Rasmussen (Retired Pro), Bradley Wiggins (Retired Pro), Raj (Mechanic EF Education First), Chris Hamilton (Team DSM), Brett Lancaster(DS Team Ineos), Dylan Van Baarle (Team Ineos), Owain Doull (EF Education First), Bernie Eisel (Ex Pro/Commentator/DS), Michael Woods (Israel Premier Tech), Ben O'Connor (Team AG2R Citroen), Carlos Verona (Team Movistar), JJ (Mechanic EF Education First), Tom Cools (Çois Cycling), Matt Stephens (Commentator), Luka Mezgec (Team BikeExchange), Mads Pedersen (Trek Segafredo), Richard Spink (Physio Team BikeExchange), Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange) & the amazing fans that I met along the way! Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Graham Willgoss and Orla Chennaoui for the latest podcast to review Stage 20 of the Giro. The Ineos Grenadiers once again produced an exhibition of General Classification riding on Saturday. The performance all but delivered Egan Bernal a second Grand Tour win, and left a stage that had promised fireworks, lacking in genuine GC action. That fact left Chennaoui feeling ‘empty'.Simon Yates cracked in the final few kilometres but the Team BikeExchange rider will likely finish on the podium, which Wiggins and Chennaoui agree is a great result, concluding that ultimately the Brit was beaten by the collective excellence of Ineos. In fact, Ineos have such depth that, Wiggins says, they could name a completely different team for the Tour de France and remain as strong. The pressure of team leadership is also debated given the contrasting fates of Bahrain–McLaren team-mates Damiano Caruso and Mikel Landa. Finally, the big reveal: Who will be singing what at the karaoke wrap party.Brought to you by Zwift where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is Produced by Pete Burton See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The race season is upon us! Hopefully, that’s true where you live... even if it isn’t, we hope this episode helps you understand how to train in the race season. Of course, any discussion about racing must be preceded by a discussion of the base season, which sets that foundation for success. So today we start with a bit of a review.  Once we set our focus on race physiology, we address which assets should be developed, how, and when. How much “top end” do you need? Which assets take longer to develop and which can be honed in a few sessions?  Once the stage is set, we dive deeper into how you go about planning and refining the assets you’ve identified, whether that’s through threshold work, anaerobic capacity workouts, or something else.  Our featured guest today is a Fast Talk veteran. Dr. Iñigo San Millán, director of training at UAE-Team Emirates, has appeared on the show numerous times before, and now we’re proud to welcome him back after successfully coaching Tadej Pogacar to the 2020 Tour de France title. With Iñigo’s help, we get a glimpse of how this incredibly talented prodigy trains, and how those lessons can be applied to any amateur cyclist.  In this star-studded episode, we also hear from elite coach Neal Henderson, who heads performance at Wahoo Fitness; former Olympian and longtime Fast Talk contributor Colby Pearce; and WorldTour pros Brent Bookwalter of Team BikeExchange and recent Giro stage winner Joe Dombrowski of UAE-Team Emirates.  Wherever you are, we sincerely hope that racing is on your horizon.
