On this week's episode, I welcome the all-singing, all-writing, all-dancing POWERHOUSE that is Geri Halliwell-Horner. She started out as Ginger Spice, in the most iconic girl band of all time (simple facts), the Spice Girls, selling over 100 million records worldwide. After the birth of her first child in 2006, she started writing while a single mother and released a series of bestselling children's books - the Ugenia Lavender novels. Now, she returns with the publication of the young adult novel Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen, a mixture of fantasy and history carrying a message that we can all be our own heroes.Geri joins me to talk about her love of writing (and why an early mentor was none other than William Boyd), not applying herself enough at school, why the Spice Girls belongs to everyone, how she dealt with grief after the death of her father and why it's morally important to her to 'age with grace and power.'Geri is my second ever Spice Girl on the podcast (the first was the amazing Melanie Chisholm) and it is a podcast goal of mine to have them all on as guests. At just 22 years old, Geri Halliwell-Horner shot to fame as Ginger Spice in the iconic and record-breaking girl group the Spice Girls. They went on to sell over 85 million records worldwide, cementing their status as one of the all-time greats. In 1998, Halliwell-Horner decided to leave the group, jumping into her solo music career. Along the way, Halliwell-Horner realized her passion for storytelling could translate to pursuits outside of songwriting, and she embarked on a new journey as a book author. After the success of her best-selling autobiography, If Only, Halliwell-Horner went on to pen the fictional children's series Ugenia Lavender, which sold more than 250,000 copies in its first five months. And this October 3, her newest book, an adventure novel called Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen, will debut. Today marks 25 years since Spiceworld was hit with a band-splitting jolt when Ginger Spice officially dropped the bomb that her Girl Power days were over. The announcement on May 31, 1998, by Gerri Halliwell sent shockwaves worldwide just days before the Spice Girls were to begin a mega-hyped North American tour. Gerri was considered the guru of the band's Girl Power philosophy….so we thought this would be a great opportunity to revisit an issue we did at the beginning of season one all about Girl Power. We'll be back in two weeks with brand new material….until then….I hope you enjoy the episode. The GJWF1 squad descended upon Austin for one glorious weekend of driver (and team principal!) sightings that had the girls shaking in their cowboy boots, awkward sunburns, and of course, RACING. It's our Super Bowl, if you will, and we went hard. Some of us still haven't recovered tbh. We tell you all about our experiences watching the race from just about every corner of the track, who won in a Daddy Christian vs Ginger Spice popularity contest, taking on a Formula 1 event with a 2 year old, a scary experience trying to get on the track post-race, BRAD PITT DRAMA, and maybe the best part — FINALLY getting to meet some of our incredible listeners. We can't wait to do it all over again. Relive it with us here!
