There is a different felt sense when you move to express a fight or flight response or dissociate from the feeling of threat in your body. Am I using movement in a way that connects me back to myself? In this week's episode, I chat with DK Ciccone, author and weight-neutral certified pilates instructor and pain specialist, about: Befriending movementRedefining movement goalsChallenging fitness cultureUnderstanding chronic pain and the role of movement in pain managementListening to your body's wisdomHealing through movementYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/rediscover-the-joy-of-movingIn the Somatic Eating® Program, you'll learn how to gauge what and how much physical movement would work best for you. Happy New Year! patreon.com/wetwired We recorded this episode just over a week after the anniversary of the death of the liberation activist and revolutionary leader Fred Hampton. 55 years ago, at the age of 21 years, Hampton was murdered while he slept by members of the Chicago police department. His killing was the culmination of years of harassment by Chicago police and surveillance by the FBI. Craig Ciccone is an independent researcher who has been studying the events surrounding Fred Hampton's murder. In the process, he's collected an astounding number of FBI documents. We get into Hampton's legacy, his harassment by the Chicago police and the FBI (part of COINTELPRO), and how they eventually planned and carried out his murder.

Grab Your Opportunity for a Free Breakthrough Call With Lynne here About Dana Karen Ciccone: Dana Karen (“DK”) Ciccone is a certified Pilates instructor who helps people in pain improve strength, mobility, and well-being in a weight-neutral environment. She's also trained in pain reprocessing therapy through the Pain Psychology Center. Having begun her own journey with chronic back pain as a young teen, she has been exploring ways to help herself and others regain joy of movement for decades. After twenty years in the health sector, DK left a corporate career to follow her passion, later launching Movement Remedies, a chronic pain–focused Pilates studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Her first book, You're Meant to Move: A Guide to Conquering Chronic Pain, Increasing Stress Resilience, and Reclaiming an Active Life, was released December 2023. What We Discuss in This Episode: DK shares how her own experience with chronic pain led her to make it the central focus of her career. She realized that even though she was in pain, she could reclaim her body's capabilities and redefine strength on her own terms. This inspired her to share her approach with others who may have accepted daily pain as normal. DK describes her process for working with clients who are experiencing pain. She emphasizes the importance of reframing movement as a way to achieve life goals, rather than just for aesthetics. She also focuses on identifying "refuge" movements that feel safe, and gradually challenging clients to overcome their fear of certain movements. Strength training is a key component to build confidence and stability. DK discusses how the traditional medical system often fails to provide a holistic, long-term approach to managing chronic pain. She critiques the over-emphasis on weight loss and the lack of understanding around the role of the nervous system in pain responses. DK believes the system needs to improve at communicating the mind-body connection in a productive way. Advice for women during the menopausal transition: DK recommends that women increase their resistance training during menopause to protect bone health. However, she also encourages women to reject the notion that they need to be segregated from younger fitness classes. DK believes women should demand the right to participate in a wide range of activities that bring them joy and fulfillment. Craig Ciccone is a independent historian who is best known for his work on the life and death of Fred Hampton and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Craig is back to discuss another area of interest, a musician by the name of Robert Palmer an english singer/songwriter who was known for his powerful, soulful voice and sartorial elegance, and his stylistic explorations, combining soul, funk, jazz, rock, pop, reggae, and blues. Craig discusses in this episode Robert Palmer's life and musical impact and how odd it is that the documentation in form of books and biopics is non existent. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/out-of-the-blank/support
We talk a fair bit about chronic pain on this podcast, friends, and some things have become abundantly clear. First, that chronic pain is not taken seriously if you live in a bigger body. Second, while movement is important, the fitness industry and diet culture rob movement of joy. In the place where chronic pain and diet culture meet, where do people who live with pain in bigger bodies go if they want actual advice that isn't simply “lose weight”? I've invited Dana Karen, or DK, Ciccone to join me for a conversation about this topic. DK is a certified Pilates instructor and is trained in pain reprocessing therapy through the Pain Psychology Center. She also wrote the book “You're Meant to Move: A Guide to Conquering Chronic Pain, Increasing Stress Resilience, and Reclaiming an Active Life” so this discussion is right in her wheelhouse.DK shares her personal journey from childhood struggles with food through yo-yo dieting along with chronic pain in adulthood. She knows from experience that clients need to shed the disappointment and grief in their bodies before they can make progress with chronic pain. We talk about the problem with going to the doctor over pain and being told to lose weight as an answer. It's devastating and diet culture contributes to the issue of chronic pain in bigger bodies. DK encourages movement with her clients, through Pilates, and operates a strictly weight-neutral environment and size-inclusive space. She's part of the Body Positive Fitness Alliance to promote that and I agree so much with her beliefs that diet culture, along with medical culture, dismisses chronic pain. It's a very open and revealing conversation, an important one, and I know you'll all appreciate it as much as I do.__About DK Ciccone:Dana Karen (“DK”) Ciccone is a certified Pilates instructor who helps people in pain improve strength, mobility, and well-being in a weight-neutral environment.
