That's the Power of Love. In this episode, we discuss the shock of infatuation with theological concepts and young theologians' conceit while reading Helmut Thielcke's A Little Exercise for Young Theologians. We converse about laity and clergy's relationship to theology, piety, and polity. What is the purpose of theology, its study, teaching, and conversations? How can theology become deadly? What happens when the truth is detached from love? All this and more on a new episode of the podcast! In the summer of 1788, a monstrous storm swept across France, wiping out the crucial wheat harvest. With the nation already in the throes of political and financial calamity, this meteorological disaster - followed by an apocalyptic drought, and latterly the cruellest winter France had ever known - exacerbated the growing sense of catastrophe. With bankruptcy declared that August and unemployment record high, all eyes turned to Jacques Necker, the newly appointed finance minister. However, the amalgamation of political and financial crisis, the cultural atmosphere of virtue and passion, and the rising social unrest had already contrived to destabilise the situation permanently. By March there was food rioting, law and order had broken down in the countryside, and in April the bloodiest day of the revolution so far erupted in Paris. At last, in June, the Estates General met for the first time since 1614-15, and the mounting pressure to replace the traditional Three Estates with a single assembly resolved itself into the formation of the National Assembly; a body determined to take the fate of the nation into its own hands. With the elements gathering against them, what will Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette do? Join Dominic and Tom as they recount the dramatic series of calamities that unravelled the nation and spiralled into the infamous Tennis Court Oath of June 1789, and the Revolution itself. From natural disasters and bread riots, and financial ruin, to political instability, Dr Guillotin, and disreputable republican firebrands…. _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and New York. *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Almost every freshman in America reads Harper Lee's classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, in English class. And it is good that so many people read it — the novel is an excellent expression of what it means to love your neighbor, the vocation to which every Christian is called. Read the full article. The Thinking Fellows get together and discuss how the concept of three ordered estates helps inform Christians in living out their vocations. Why do we so often focus on the political estate while skipping over the family and the church when talking about the problems in our world? In his upcoming book, Al shows readers how we can reflect the light of Christ to the world around us. Pre-order Al's newest book on CPH's website by visiting cph.org/faith-that-shines-in-the-culture. At the same time, every individual is called by God to do something in the world, known as your vocation. Both your vocation and living in The Three Estates are beautiful and rich parts of being a Lutheran. In his upcoming book, Al Espinosa examines both of these theological concepts to help you see how to take up God's greatest call: showcasing God's light through you and into the world. During the episode, Al talks about how Christians can learn how to express Christ's light in each portion of their life as they go about their daily routine. He also discusses how this new book fits in with his two previous Faith That… books with CPH and what listeners should expect from the work. QuestionsHow does your new book fit into your previous writing? What is vocation? What does vocation look like? What are the Three Estates? What advice do you have for church members to help underscore how important it is for every member of the local congregation to be active and involved?About the GuestRev. Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. Get up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says Yahweh, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.” - Joshua 7:10-13 This Episode's Links: (All timestamps offset by 24-seconds) 00:00 – Joshua 7 05:03 – Thoughts on the Reading 23:34 – How Vocation Transformed Society - Gene Edward Veith, Ligonier 55:34 - Inhabiting the Places of Promise: Martin Luther's Teaching on the Three Institutions – Michael Laffin, Ad Fontes Journal --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garrett-ashley-mullet/message

Sean Smith to discuss The Epitome of the Formula of Concord, Article XII: Other Factions ‹Heresies› and Sects that Never Embrace the Augsburg Confession (Articles that cannot be tolerated in the Government & Domestic Life - Paragraphs 12-19).

Episode 1, 'The Three Estates', explores the social hierarchy of the Old Regime. Having maintained the medieval divisions of feudalism, French society was littered with social and economic grievances that existed both between and within the Three Estates.
In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue to discuss vocation in the Church. Today, they focus on how individual members of congregations relate to and love each other.
In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason begin a new series by looking at the doctrine of vocation in the Church. Pastors love their congregations by preaching the Word, administering the Sacraments, and shepherding the sheep. Congregations love their pastors by praying for them, taking to heart the Word that they preach, and supporting them financially.
In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue their examination of vocation in the estate of the Family by doing a Bible Study on Genesis 2:18-25. In marriage, your spouse is your primary neighbor. Adam’s particular vocational responsibility to Eve was to communicate God’s will and God’s Word to Eve, and he failed at that.
In today’s episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue their examination of the doctrine of vocation. Today starts a new mini-series looking at vocation in the three estates. The next handful of episodes will study vocation in the family.
In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue their biblical examination of the doctrine of vocation by doing a Bible Study on 1 Cor. 7:17-20. The Three Estates describe to us where we can find our neighbors, whom we then serve through the prescriptions of the Ten Commandments. Vocation also tells us where we suffer and how we suffer.
Usually we speak of the Ten Commandments as the law of God which shows us our sin. Furthermore, we know that only believers can do good works, because without faith nothing is pleasing to God (Heb. 11:6). Good works flow from faith. Nevertheless, when Luther describes the Ten Commandments as the fountainhead of all good works, he is contrasting God-ordained works with works which man makes up. When an unbeliever lives 20 years within the estate of marriage, we should not be afraid to call it holy marriage--as marriage is established by God. Thus, Luther has written, "For to be holy and to be saved are two entirely different things. We are saved through Christ alone; but we become holy both through this faith and through these divine foundations and orders. Even the godless may have much about them that is holy without being saved thereby" (LW, v.37, p.364-365). This lesson seeks to give some sound ways to speak about the God-instituted estates and the Table of Duties for those who live in these "various holy orders and positions" (Small Catechism). God has established these estates not as a mean of acquiring salvation, but as both the means He uses to preserve His creation, and as the believer's means by which, living in these estates, he gives thanks for God's creation and salvation. Although others have explained the three estates (church, family, and state) exclusively, the Word of God teaches these estates theologically and ethically. Each and every person, believer or unbeliever, finds themselves to be a member of each estate. The church was instituted in the Garden of Eden, before Eve was created and before the fall into sin. The family was instituted when God united Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and before the fall into sin. The state was instituted after the fall into sin, in order to curb sinful outbursts by the threat of punishment. God has established these estates not as a mean of acquiring salvation, but as both the means God uses to preserve His creation, and as the believer's means by which living in these estates he gives thanks for God's creation and salvation Handout 1: threee-estates-etc.pdf Handout 2: ThreeEstates-Wolfmueller.pdf

In this episode, we post the third of four parts of our time live on the air at AM 980 KKMS with Dr. Nathan Olson. The topics for this segment of the interview are “Christ Alone” and “Soli Deo Gloria”. The church has one thing that you can’t get anywhere else – the Gospel. As such, all theology should point to Christ just as all Scripture points to Christ. Because of the salvation delivered to us in Jesus Christ, God’s will for the Christian is loving our neighbors in our vocation.
In this episode we bring you a feature-length edition of Clinging to God and Guns where Lloyd and Pastor Bennett consider what God's Word says about government and what we, as Christians, owe the ruling authorities. Leftist gun-grabbers accuse us of loving guns more than God. So we center our discussion around Romans 13, and the idea that government is instituted for our good and ask (and answer) some tough questions. Are we right to refuse to comply with the law if we disagree with it? Was the American Revolution a violation of Romans 13? What about government turned evil? What about gun control? As a Christian, must we comply if the law violates God's law? The questions and answers are difficult and uncomfortable at times, and that's why we ask them.
