#022 What happens when a phone call about a hunting dog leads to lifelong friendship, a marriage, and a thriving business? Chase White, owner of Fowl Plains Outfitters in Great Bend, Kansas, joins Barton to unpack their decade-long journey from dog trainer and client to witnessing life's most profound moments together.Chase shares the remarkable story of how his British Labrador Jet, purchased from Southern Oak Kennels, became the foundation for both his professional guiding career and his personal life. When Chase needed a steady, reliable hunting companion, he reached out to Barton—beginning a friendship that would see them through proposals, weddings, and the birth of Chase's son. The conversation reveals how retrievers create connections that transcend typical business relationships.Through candid storytelling, we explore the world of waterfowl outfitting from an insider's perspective. Chase details how Fowl Plains builds its reputation not just on hunting success, but on creating a "home away from home" experience that keeps clients returning year after year. His philosophy of "controlling the controllables" offers valuable insight for anyone in the service industry or building a passion-based business. The episode takes a poignant turn as Chase discusses the recent DC plane crash that claimed the lives of several Fowl Plains clients returning from a hunt. In the face of devastating loss, the waterfowl community demonstrated extraordinary solidarity, raising over $230,000 for affected families. This tragedy underscores Chase's message that hunting is about people and relationships—not pile pictures or social media validation.Whether you're a dedicated waterfowler, considering a guided hunt, or simply appreciate authentic stories of friendship and community, this conversation reminds us that the best memories in the field often have little to do with the number of birds harvested. Ready your retriever, pull up a seat by the fire, and join us for a heartfelt discussion about what truly matters in the hunting world.

The Kansas Department of Transportation created the Cost Share Program in 2019 to help fund transportation projects in local communities. In Fall 2019, KDOT awarded $1.19 million in Cost Share Project funds to the City of Great Bend to reconstruct the historic dragstrip and shutdown area (this includes both the track and the portion of the racetrack after the finish line where cars slow down). The dragstrip project was completed in May 2021, but within a couple months, stakeholders raised concerns with the quality of the track such as "high spots" and later reported chipping and flaking of the track's surface. As a result of the dragstrip's quality issues, the track was closed for the 2023 racing season and it has not been reopened since. Under the Cost Share program contract, the city had the responsibility of overseeing the dragstrip project. KDOT was authorized to enforce penalties if the city didn't use the project as it was intended by contract. KDOT was authorized to recapture up to 90% of the Cost Share project funds based on the track closure in 2023, but they did not enforce this penalty. KDOT officials told us this was because they wanted the city to get the dragstrip back into racing condition, and they were satisfied with the city's efforts to do so. KDOT officials told us that moving forward, they would consider enforcing the claw-back penalty if Great Bend didn't get the dragstrip reconstructed in a reasonable time, but KDOT didn't set a specific timeframe for this possibility.

The Building a Stronger Economy 1.0 grant program (or BASE 1.0 grant program) awarded almost $100 million in federal funds to Kansas businesses for infrastructure development. The Department of Commerce awarded SOFTwarfare a BASE 1.0 grant in April 2022 to build a data center in Great Bend, Kansas. SOFTwarfare's grant agreement allowed them to use grant funds for construction and equipment costs and matching funds for permitting, inspection, and administrative costs. As of September 30, 2024, SOFTwarfare spent grant funds and matching contributions on the types of items allowed in the award agreement. Some of the expenditures differed from the specifics in the award agreement but Commerce staff accepted the deviations. However, SOFTwarfare didn't spend all the grant funds by July 6, 2024 as the contract required and Commerce officials did not proactively adjust the deadline.

China's plan to build the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra River aims to generate 60 gigawatts of power but raises environmental and geopolitical concerns. Drive about 45 minutes southwest of the Phoenix Valley, and you will reach an expanse of the Sonoran desert with a long, rich history. The Gila River runs through this area, which was once lush with flora and fauna. Now, with the river dammed up, the water doesn't always flow. Nonetheless, the region is still home to an abundance of people, wildlife and historical treasures. These three aspects are what locals, archaeologists, and biologists hope to preserve as a national monument. The Great Bend of the Gila, as the monument would be named, is a network of braided rivulets. These streams join into the Gila River, which cuts through prehistoric lava fields and flows past nearby mountain ranges before joining the Colorado River near the Sea of Cortez. Respect Great Bend of the Gila is the campaign pushing President Joe Biden to sign this area into national monument status. The campaign includes local tribes, wildlife biologists and archeologists. The proposed monument boundaries are about 70 miles of the Gila River corridor and approximately 370,000 acres of public land. In this episode of Valley 101, we hear from representatives of each of these groups. They share the history, discoveries and importance of the Gila River region to Arizonans and the nation. When times are tough (or even when they're not), culture is everything. In this podcast, Quint talks to Bob Page and Tammy Peterman, executives at The University of Kansas Health System and coauthors of the book Proud But Never Satisfied: Ten Transformative Actions for Healthcare Systems. The academic health system has had quite a journey of transformation. In 1997, they had the lowest patient satisfaction ranking in the nation (a dismal 5th percentile). Now, for over a decade, they've been nationally ranked as one of the best hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report. Bob and Tammy talk about how their emphasis on culture has helped them sustain these results. It created a strong foundation and the consistency to get through some rough patches over the years, most recently COVID-19. And they believe culture will carry them into the future. Here are a few of the insights they share:·       You must have “guardians of the culture” to maintain the consistency.·       Communicate early. Don't make people wonder what the plan is. Make sure they have the information they need to lead their team.·       When the message stays consistent over time, people know what the core expectations are. This is invaluable.·       Recognizing the value of the entire team (frontline care providers and those who support them) is critical. Leaders should spend most of their time rewarding and recognizing others. ·       Always think, What can we do differently? What can we do better? It's important to be aware of that creative tension where you want to feel really good about where you are but also keep improving. # # #Bob Page and Tammy Peterman are coauthors of Proud But Never Satisfied: Ten Transformative Actions for Healthcare Systems (Huron Consulting Services, LLC, 2021, ISBN: 978-1-62218-111-7, $30.00).Bob Page is president and CEO of The University of Kansas Health System. Page has guided its transformation from an institution with the lowest patient satisfaction ranking in the nation to an organization consistently recognized among the best comprehensive academic medical centers in the country by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study since 2006.Tammy Peterman, MS, RN, FAAN, is president, Kansas City Division, and executive vice president, chief operating officer, and chief nursing officer at The University of Kansas Health System. The organization achieved Magnet status four times in a row—to date—and “Best Hospital in Kansas City and Kansas” consistently under her leadership.  The University of Kansas Health System is a premier academic health system providing a full range of services, from routine primary care to advanced care for complex conditions. With over 1,100 staffed beds, the system includes facilities located across the Kansas City metropolitan area, as well as hospital and clinic locations in Great Bend, Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas. During the past fiscal year, the health system cared for more than 355,000 unique patients, coming from every county in Kansas, 96 percent of counties in Missouri, each of the 50 states in the U.S., and nearly 30 international locations. The health system appears on many best hospital lists and is recognized for its quality and service, provided by an outstanding team of staff and physicians. Episode 30: Recorded August 2, 2022 "I don't know how to describe heaven for a dog...it's hard for a lot of people to understand how much these Greyhounds love to run..."Dr. Rob Gillette on Auburn University veterinary students seeing Greyhounds run for the first time Show Notes Dr. Rob Gillette has been around working and sporting dogs his entire life. He was born in Great Bend, near Cheyenne Bottoms, Kansas and grew up hunting with retrievers and bird dogs. Cheyenne Bottoms was also home to the first coursing meeting of the American Coursing Club in 1886. He didn't realize it at the time, but it was a sign of his future involvement in Greyhound sports medicine. Dr. Gillette graduated from veterinary school at Kansas State University in 1988 and subsequently helped take care of Greyhounds at local dog tracks and with breeders in and around Kansas City and Abilene. After completing a postdoctoral in human biomechanics, he received a research grant from the Kansas Racing Commission to better understand how Greyhounds run and how to reduce their injuries. Dr. Gillette would continue to research Greyhound performance and consult on track design and surface composition on behalf of trainers and track owners. In the late 1990s, Dr. Gillette began a 15 year career at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine. There, he expanded his canine sports medicine research. His students had the opportunity to observe and learn from Greyhounds participating in what is now known as the Canine Performance Sciences program. His research would not only benefit the care of the Greyhound but serve the greater canine community as well. In this episode, host John Parker discusses with Dr. Gillette his career as a veterinarian and researcher of Greyhounds, service dogs, and law enforcement and military K9s. They discuss how an understanding of the Greyhound's unique anatomy and athleticism better informs sports medicine for many breeds. Dr. Gillette also shares some of his current research activities and plans to develop the next generation of Greyhound savvy veterinarians. It has just evolved…Started in 2004 just setting up at craft fairs and selling to friends…turned into bigger rodeos, barrel races, team ropings, and the opening of our first store in Buhler KS. Then we just kept growing…Now in our 3rd location in Great Bend Kansas and still traveling some. Of course we could move to a bigger store…and we could expand even further…so until then…Keep shopping and browsing our site – you just never know where we will end up next! Although – all of this could not of ever happened without great friendships, new friendships and our great customers that enter our front door each day – the journey will continue - THANK YOU!!"
