The vaginal microbiome is often mentioned in passing - sort of as an afterthought - usually when we're really talking about the gut microbiome. We've decided to give the vaginal microbiome centre stage today, and with good reason - it's a huge factor when it comes to the quality of a woman's life and health, and has implications for fertility, pregnancy and childbirth, and risks associated with sexually transmitted infections. On this podcast, NBT Scientific Director and Coach Megan Hall and I are discussing the vaginal microbiome: what it is, how to assess for problems, and how to maintain a state of good health. Megan talks about the effects of vaginal dysbiosis on pregnancy and fertility, and how to create the best possible outcome for childbirth. She explains what causes disruption to the vaginal microbiome in the first place, and how ancestral health principles can keep you on track. She also outlines how to rebalance the vaginal microbiome when there's dysbiosis, along with practical steps to take before resorting to antibiotics and antifungals. Radical Candor™ is the ability to Challenge Directly and show you Care Personally at the same time. Radical Candor will help you and all the people you work with do the best work of your lives and build the best relationships of your career. Two nearly universal experiences make Radical Candor unnatural. One, most people have been told since they learned to talk some version of “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all.” When they become a boss, the very thing they have been taught not to do since they were 18 months old is suddenly their job. Furthermore, most people, since they got their first job, have been told to be “professional.” Too often, that’s code for leaving your humanity at home. But to build strong relationships, you have to Care Personally. You have to bring your whole self to work. Buy Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity. Toréa wasn’t always a health coach and functional medicine practitioner. Our bodies have natural detox pathways, but they are overwhelmed by modern life. More than 80,000 new chemicals have been released into the world since the industrial revolution 150 years ago, and most of them within the past 50 years. These chemicals have never been fully tested for their effects on our bodies or the environment. We are asking our bodies to detoxify far more than they were designed to handle, and this is an important element in reclaiming our health. That said, there are a lot of scams out there related to detox cleanses, powders and programs. Many people who try these end up feeling worse. So, in this podcast we’re going to learn how to detoxify in a healthy, sustainable way. My guest is Toréa Rodriguez. She is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and a Transformational Life Coach. She's also a fellow autoimmune warrior.
Toréa Rodriguez is a former biochemist, Silicon Valley executive, and professional pilot who after being diagnosed with a debilitating series of autoimmune diseases transformed her life. Now she is now a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Practitioner and Master Vitality Transformation Coach based out of the San Francisco Bay Area. "I have more energy than I can remember having even before I got sick. I obtained the training and certifications necessary to do what I'm most passionate about: I help those with chronic health issues, including autoimmune disease, break free of their frustration by taking simple steps to transform their vitality without complex medical treatment. Join me in the journey of finding life's simple treasures one by one... and restore your own personal health to optimal vitality." In This Interview Toréa teaches How To: How to incorporate your personalized nutrition plan - customized perfectly for your body How to get restful and restorative sleep - every night! How to prioritize your health when you are consumed by a seemingly endless “to-do” list How to implement simple mindfulness habits without having to remember to be mindful How to support your body’s healing through the deeper insight of functional lab work How to understand what your body needs each day for optimal healing "There are easy, potent ways of quickly generating energy, reducing stress, reducing inflammation and creating vitality. These specific biological and psychological “switches” turn stress reactions off and relaxation responses on. Flipping these switches is the key to helping the body heal itself and upgrading our experiences of work, family, friends, and FUN! The foundation that supports the above transformation “switchboard” is: Real Food – Providing the proper balance of nutritional raw materials is essential. Most people are deficient in multiple areas, which results in disease or malfunction. Getting what we need improves everything from sleep and mood to immune function and sexuality. Rest – We live in a 24x7 world, often overlooking how pivotal rest is for health. Cultivating a healthy relationship with adequate rest promotes healing and sustained energy. Movement – Usually we hear it’s not enough, so we drive ourselves harder. But often times too much can create hidden stresses inside the body. Finding the right kind and quantity of movement is critical to restoring vitality. Stress Reduction – Most of us think of this as emotional stress. Stress is hidden in many forms such as infection, food intolerance, and chemical exposure. Discovering and eliminating the stresses around you can have profound effects on your health and vitality. It’s a scenario we’ve all experienced. You go to your OBGYN for your scheduled PAP smear just to get the box ticked on your health check up list, and wait for the Doctor to give you the “all clear.” Is that the best you can do? Is it the best you should do? Let me ask you a couple of very serious questions... How would your confidence, sense of empowerment, and self esteem be different if you knew how to be a more active participant in your own feminine health? What if you could truly understand your hormonal and reproductive health, and know the right steps to take in order to keep yourself in a state of optimal health in those areas? That may sound like a pipe dream, or something that’s going to require a lot more minutia than you want to invest. But think about it for just a second… This is YOUR health we’re talking about. It’s YOUR privilege and RIGHT to be able to take an active role in your own reproductive and hormonal health. There are things you can do to make improvements in your health and even prevent issues that often arise as your body ages. Doesn’t that feel good… to know that you can actually DO something to help yourself before things become major issues? On this episode, Julie is chatting with her friend and self-identified “Functional Medicine Nerd,” Torea Rodriguez (www.ToreaRodriguez.com). Torea introduced Julie to the “Fertility Awareness Method” which is an all natural form of birth control and so much more (not to be confused with the rhythm method). The conversation today should not be seen as a “how to” instructional but rather an overview and examination of FAM, including the basics of the method, how and why it works, and the benefits that come from using this approach. Much more than a birth control method. Both Julie and Torea stress that FAM is not only about birth control… and that’s where you’re able to take an active hand in your own health. The FAM enables you to keep track of your own hormonal levels and monthly cycle on a level you probably won’t believe. You can catch hormonal imbalances before they become serious, notice even the slightest changes in your cycle and health so you can be prepared for changes in your body before they happen, and even detect issues (like cervical cysts) when your health care provider may not even be concerned about such things. One of the ladies in today’s conversation did exactly that, to the amazement of her Doctor. If you want to throw off the depency you have on your health care provider in favor of a smart, informed, accurate degree of self-care that most women have never thought possible, you can do it. The Fertility Awareness Method could be the answer. Find out more on this episode.
