After completing his chiropractic education at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Goldhamer traveled to Australia, where he became licensed as an osteopathic physician. In this episode of the CCPT Mythbusters series, I tackle one of the most common labels adults place on children: "They're just manipulative." I explain why manipulation requires cognitive planning, rational thinking, and intentional strategy—abilities that children simply don't possess developmentally. Instead, I unpack the difference between manipulation and conditioning, showing how children learn through emotional experiences and repeated interactions with the adults in their lives. When we view behavior through a child-centered lens, what appears to be manipulation is actually a child trying to meet emotional needs in the only ways they know how. I also discuss how this understanding transforms our conversations with parents. Rather than accepting the label of "manipulative," we can help caregivers recognize how patterns of reinforcement shape behavior and how CCPT interrupts those cycles by preserving relationship, maintaining healthy limits, and fostering genuine emotional growth. Ethical persuasion is your professional obligation to your prospective clients.  But most advisors don't believe this because they fall into one of two extremes:  They either ditch the "ethical" part and dive into unethical manipulation tactics to trick their prospects into forking over their hard-earned money…  Or they think the complete opposite: That persuasion is beneath them. In moments of crisis, people often turn to negotiation. When trouble comes, we begin to bargain. “God, if You will help me out of this situation, then I will do this for You.” It is a very human instinct. We try to strike a deal with God, as though His mercy could be earned or His help secured by our promises. That instinct lies near the heart of the story before us in Book of Judges 10:6–12:7. Israel had again turned away from the Lord, chasing the gods of the nations around them. Their suffering was not accidental. It was the just consequence of their rebellion. Yet in remarkable patience and compassion, God was still willing to rescue His undeserving people. Into that desperate moment steps Jephthah. He is a capable warrior and a shrewd negotiator, but he is also deeply flawed. His story is filled with bargaining, manipulation, and tragic consequences. Jephthah shows us what happens when we approach God with the instincts of the world rather than the trust of faith. Yet even through this broken deliverer, God still shows mercy to His people.
