Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to childhood friend from youth baseball, JD Lobue Jr. as our guest today. Back in the 1970s, host Josh Mills and JD played on the Little League Dodgers team at Studio City National Little League and became fast friends in elementary school. And while he'd known about his father, JD Lobue Sn., was a television director, it really wasn't something they talked about on the baseball diamond. Cut to, oh several years later, while reading issue #59 of the ultimate rock 'n roll magazine, Ugly Things, which bills itself as Wild Sounds from Past Dimensions, that an in-depth article on the 60s Mississippi garage band The Gordian Knot caught his eye. Turns out, JD Lobue Sr. was a band member of saif Knot and after making their way west to Hollywood in the last 1960s, the band got their big break. Signing to Verve Records and recording their only album, the band befriended Nancy Sinatra, Aside from their lone LP, The Gordian Knot also became THE band to have play your swanky Hollywood party. Or in some cases, join Nancy on USO tours in Asia during the Vietnam War. All of this later lead to stints for Lobue Sr., in television after the band broke up. Starting with black dance party juggernaut, Soul Train with host and creator Don Cornelius, JD became an in demand television director. We get into all of this as well as beloved television shows like Soap, Newhart, It's A Living, Dharma & Greg and Two and a Half Men with Jr. which were just a few of his credits. We discuss life growing up in Hollywood with JD as well as a rather unique love of a sport that flew under the radar – not pun intended - in ultimate frisbee which the younger JD excelled at. We can thank garage rock from a superior music magazine Ugly Things for this episode. All it took was a Google search to bring us this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to J.D. Lobue Jr., son of television director & at one time budding sunshine pop musician J.D. Lobue Sr. We reached out to J.D. Jr., after reading an article in a fantastic music magazine called Ugly Things about a band from the 1960s called The Gordian Knot. While reading the article, the name J.D. Lobue came up and host Josh Mills immediately thought, “That MUST be the father of my former little league baseball teammate!” After all, Lobue isn't Smith, it's a pretty unique name. With a little bit more research, we discovered our hunch was correct, it was the same person. As we dug a little further, we realized that not only was Sr. a member of The Gordian Knot, but was also a well-known television director whose credits included multiple credits for iconic American shows like Soul Train, Soap, It's A Living, Herman's Head, Dharma and Greg and so many more. There were also credits for shows that didn't make it like Norman Lear's All's Fair, Amanda's By The Sea, Comedy Zone, You Take The Kids and more. So on this episode, we get into the weeds on what it was like in the booth watching your dad direct Soul Train and how your dad kept it together when things didn't go right on the set of Soap. We also discuss meeting the great Madeline Kahn, how he channeled The Bad News Bears Tanner as a member of the Dodgers at Studio City National Little League, iconic TV director Jay Sandrich, the jazz fusion band The Crusaders, sitting in Archie Bunker's chair on the All in the Family set, playing tennis at Mel Torme's house and much more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. Take a listen.

THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring David Bash Today Arwen welcomes David Bash, Founder of the International Pop Overthrow Festival! As a youth in the early 1970s, David Bash knew he had caught the pop music bug when he found himself unable to sleep each Christmas Eve, as he anxiously awaited the broadcast of the WABC Top 100 the next morning. By the end of that decade Bash had amassed a record collection of more than 3,000 items, and though it's since been mostly converted to CDs, the collection has never stopped growing. In the '80s Bash received a B.A. in Journalism from New York University and a Masters in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine. Although he taught Psychology at several community colleges throughout the '90s the journalism muse continued to beckon, and in 1995 he began writing CD reviews for Yellow Pills magazine and Audities magazine. Since then Bash has written reviews and articles for magazines such as Amplifier, Bucketfull of Brains, Discoveries, Goldmine, Shindig, Ugly Things and Entertainment Today, as well as liner notes for several CD releases.

In August of 1998 Bash founded the International Pop Overthrow Festival In Los Angeles. Since that time IPO, as it's affectionately been labeled, has taken place in several cities across the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Liverpool (at the World Famous Cavern Club), Stockholm, and Copenhagen!  The aim of International Pop Overthrow was and always will be to create positive exposure for every artist who participates, to create a nurturing, cooperative environment between the musicians and their fans, and to bring pop music, as those of us associated with the festival define the term, to the hearts and minds of the mainstream public.
