In September of 2021, Cherry Road Media, a Parsippany, New Jersey-based technology company, announced it had acquired 20 newspapers from the Gannett company, bringing their total count of publications owned to 27. Their list of titles now stretches across seven states: Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Alabama. Cherry Road CEO Jeremy Gulban stated in a recent press release that "This was his way to give back to local communities by supporting media houses that add so much value to our daily lives but are suffering the brunt of a digital age by losing subscriptions." In the October 2021 E&P cover story entitled: "Under New Management," Sara April, from Dirks, Van Essen & April, the media merger and acquisition firm that represented Gannett in the sale of the 20 properties to Gulban, described the current mergers-and-acquisition landscape as "dynamic," noting that buyer trends have changed in the past three years. April stated: "Before that, the industry saw a lot of large corporate owners buying newspapers. Then, just a few years later, some of those organizations, including Gannett, are now selling off some of them, especially local titles."   In this 107th episode of "E&P Reports," Publisher Mike Blinder interviews Cherry Road's CEO Jeremy Gulban about why his technology company is "all-in" with newspaper ownership and his plans for managing their 27 local publications. And does his future include more growth in the news publishing industry? Also appearing in this episode is Sara April, from Dirks, Van Essen & April, who talks about the recent sale and offers her perspective on the current mergers & acquisition landscape for both buyers and sellers.   Newspapers owned by Cherry Road Media now include: Pratt (KS) Tribune Kiowa County (KS) Signal Hiawatha (KS) Penny Press Butler County (KS) Times-Gazette McPherson (KS) Sentinel The Leavenworth (KS) Times Wellington (KS) Daily News Dodge City (KS) Daily Globe Newton (KS) Kansan Garden City (KS) Telegram St John (KS) News Hays (KS) Daily News Ottawa (KS) Herald

Selah - A Podcast by Koinonia Fellowship

Whenever a person repents and turns to Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sin, he or she becomes a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). That is what is known as the new birth, or being born again (John 3:3-7). With that new birth, we can say that we are now under new management. Formerly self-ruled, we are now under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. All of our lives are now found “in Him”. Thus, our human relationships are now to be subject to God's “House Rules” and not those of our flawed and fallen society. For the child of God, there is only one Operator's Manual from which we find instructions for godly relationships. In this Operator's Manual (The Holy Bible), we discover that God is a God of order and design, and we find that order laid out for us in the realms of marriage, parenting, and work. This God-ordained order or design is not politically correct, to say the least. This God-ordained order supersedes the order as is found in every culture, custom, or race of people. In other words, there isn't a different Italian or Indian or American structure or design for order in the home or family. There is God's way as found in Scripture to which any culture or family must adapt. Likewise, parenting is to be done God's way and children are called upon to honor that way. The way that an individual works or runs a business is to be done God's way. In every area of life, God has an ordained order that makes that relationship function properly. But when that order or design is neglected or ignored in any way, shape, or form, the net result is the breakdown of harmony within the marriage, the family, or the workplace. As we look at God's Operator's Manual regarding the realms of marriage, parenting, and work, my prayer is that The Spirit of God would minister to our hearts and give us ears to hear afresh these timeless truths and apply them to our lives. “Except The Lord build the house” – the marriage, the family, our vocations and the workplace – we labor in vain (Psalm 127:1). Years ago a dear saint said something to my wife Elizabeth that I will never forget: “The Christian life is only hard when you kick against the goads.” If you are kicking in any area that we cover this morning, give that over to God and start walking again Under New Management. The number one source for new jobs and opportunities come from weak and dormant ties. Because these ties are not strangers to us and have diverse information and new potential introductions. – David Burkus Hello everyone and welcome back to the dHarmic Evolution show! Taking a ride on the show with us today is David Burkus. A skilled researcher and inspiring communicator, David is a former associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University. He has delivered keynote speeches and workshops for Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Stryker, and governmental and military leaders at the US Naval Academy and Naval Postgraduate School. His TED talk has been viewed over two million times. An established writer, David has a number of books - and best sellers- under his belt, including; Friend of a Friend, Under New Management and The Myths of Creativity David's Background While still in high school, David had his mind fixated on pursuing a career in writing. Writing, being such a divergent industry, left David entangled in a quagmire of what kind of writing niche to take on. Driven by passion, David set for his undergraduate studies in English - Creative writing. Having lunged into different genres of writing while in College, David found himself connected and relating to Social Science non-fiction. He felt drawn to the works of Malcom Gladwell in particular. He loved just how Gladwell's kind would use their talented storytelling and writing skills to address different issues and make an impact on the world. This inspired David to head for graduate studies in Organizational Psychology. In January 2010, while taking his graduate studies, David, fuelled by his ambition towards social science non-fiction writing and his beliefs in networking, started a Podcast Show. Although he was faced by numerous Podcasting hurdles at the time, David remained focused and was able to leverage his show into getting interviews with top guests in his field of study (all of whom responded due to the unfamiliar, yet interesting Podcast media form). David snowballed from the connections and networks he built while podcasting and was able to transition and build his career in the writing and publishing niche without much difficulty. When it comes to attracting A-Players to your business, tapping into the networks of A-Players is key. But, what if you have exhausted your contacts? Then what? In her latest edition in the How to Hire the Best Series, Dr. Sabrina shares David Burkus’ insights on how to network based on human behavior and psychology, and not rote networking advice that we frequently hear. David joins Dr. Sabrina to on today’s show to challenge our outdated notions about how we “should” network. These insights will be powerful in helping you attract A-Players to your team. Plus, Dr. Sabrina digs into radical management practices from David’s other book, Under New Management, that the Tap the Potential team and some of our clients are experiencing great success with.  David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought-after keynote speaker, and an Associate Professor of Leadership and Innovation. His newest book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections, one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. He’s delivered keynotes to the leaders of Fortune 500 companies and the future leaders of the United States Naval Academy. His TED Talk has been viewed over two million times and he is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review. Show Highlights: David’s inspiration for writing Friend of a Friend was from two different ideas: 1) New studies from the world of network science, which are fascinating but not always practical; and 2) Annoyance at the networking advice books, which tend to be autobiographical. Dr. Sabrina covers a challenge business owners encounter with networking to attract A-players, and how she discovered the answers in one of David’s books. When people think they’ve asked everyone they know when searching for an A-player, most of the time they have only asked people they feel comfortable asking.  The subtitle of David’s book is the Hidden Network and describes those people that you already know, but you’re forgetting.  Most people would benefit from a system where they’re constantly pinging those people, reaching out to them whenever a thought of them is triggered, such as by reading a news article or seeing something on social media that brings them to mind. This move is beneficial for not only when you’re looking to hire, but looking to be hired, as well. David explains the concept of tapping into networks through brokers, and the key to finding out if you’re already a broker or relying on brokers. It’s not enough to just build a diverse team because the team, the longer it works together, will be less and less diverse. The longer they work together, the more they are going to think alike. Be mindful of constant refreshing. Dr. Sabrina and David discuss the concept of “no email”, and how it can be doable and beneficial. David delves into the science of oxytocin and what happens to us in our bodies when trust is extended and how we reciprocate around that.  Don’t cater to C-and-D-players when designing policies and procedures. In North America, we brag about how much we work. We need to flip this and senior leaders need to be showy about how little they’re around and be gone so that other team members get the message that taking time off is actually Ok. Dr. Sabrina and David discuss the 4-Week Vacation™ Challenge and David research backing up how important it is to fully unplug for an extended period of time. What happens when a company lets its employees decide what their salaries should be? Will anyone ask to be paid less? A number of tech companies are finding out, as they see it as a way of achieving greater fairness and transparency, as well as motivating staff to raise their effort to match their remuneration. Ed Butler speaks to Heather McGregor, executive dean of the Edinburgh Business School, and to David Burkus, the California-based author of a book about pay transparency, Under New Management. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - By request, let's fly away to the Sunshine Pavilion and experience Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room!  We'll learn a little about this iconic attraction and then hear the whole show! Afterwards, Grant will give his thoughts on The Enchanted Tiki Room!  Recorded on August 17, 2019. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode, by special request from Nicholas Floyd, we head to Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World to bask in the wonder that is Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room!  Located in Adventureland, the guide map describes this attraction by saying Watch tropical birds and colorful flowers come to life.  There are no age or height requirements for this show and because it is a show, there isn’t a Thrill Level listed. Before we fly off to the tropical hideaway, here are five fast facts about Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. 1. Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room was Magic Kingdom, opening day attraction, opening with the park on October 1, 1971. 2.  The attraction was an exact copy of the attraction found at Disneyland albeit with a different pre-show and a slightly different name.  When the Tiki Room opened in Walt Disney World it was called Tropical Serenade.  It would jkeep this name for many years, eventually being renamed The Enchanted Tiki Room. 3. In September of 1997, The Enchanted Tiki Room was closed to make way an overhaul and the addition of new show elements for a new attraction called The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management).  This new version of the attraction was much maligned by fans of the original mostly because of the addition of audio animatronics of Iago from Aladdin and Zazu from The Lion King as well as more modern music. 4. In January of 2011, a fire broke out in the attic of the attraction, seriously damaging one of the Iago audio animatronics. 5. The attraction re-opened in August of 2011 and the Under New Management elements were stripped away and the show was restored to it original form, save for a few edits in the music to tighten up the show’s running time. Let’s head off to Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room for a Tropical Serenade.  After the attraction audio, I’ll give you my thoughts on this attraction and this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones, put them on now as we check out Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom! But did you know that it's actually your weaker or former contacts who will be the most helpful to you? Or that many of our best efforts at meeting new people simply serve up the same old opportunities we already have?In this startling new look at the art and science of networking, business school professor David Burkus digs deep to find the unexpected secrets that reveal the best ways to grow your universe.Based upon entertaining case studies and scientific research, this practical and revelatory guide shares what the best networkers really do…and it looks a lot less like collecting business cards and making random introductions and a lot more like fostering authentic connections and seeking out diverse new voices.Forget the outdated advice you've already heard.
