Join Hank as he takes us from Walter Hagen at the outset, to Seve Ballesteros and the Spanish armada changing the game, to Paul Azinger and the pods that produced victory at Valhalla. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, some of golf's most legendary names strolled and dominated the fairways. Superstars like Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, and Sam Snead. These were the stars golf fans came out to see play. They were the golfers who grabbed the headlines. But there were others, less known stars, who also won their share of tournaments. Stars like Henry Picard, Horton Smith, and Tommy Armour. And then there was Paul Runyan. Certainly not an imposing figure standing at 5-foot-7, 130 pounds. But he was also one of the game's most dominant figures, especially during the 1930s. Known as Little Poison for his "deadly" short game, Runyan is one of only six golfers to ever win nine tournaments in one year, and the first to ever win more than eight in one season. In 1933, Runyan won nine times. Overall, he posted 29 wins, 28 during the 1930s. His two biggest wins came in the PGA Championship. In 1934, Runyan, when the PGA was still a match-play event, Runyan captured his first Major by downing Craig Wood on the 38th hole of play, 1-up. But it was his 1938 win at the PGA Championship that stunned the world of golf when he crushed Snead 8 and 7 in the most lopsided final round in the history of the PGA. Kratzer was riding his motorcycle when he collided with another vehicle at Rogers Bridge Road and then struck and killed a pedestrian identified as Thomas Eurell, 42. Witnesses reported that the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed with erratic lane changes before the crash. Video footage from the city's cameras confirmed the motorcycle's speed exceeded 100 mph on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard............read more on this at gwinnettdailypost.com     STORY 2: 16th   MRC GEM, the Medical Reserve Corps covering Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale counties, is celebrating its 16th anniversary with over 1,300 members volunteering in the east metro area. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they administered 375,000 vaccinations and tests and provided 17,256 hours of service to the response efforts. They specialize in various tasks, including establishing community reception centers for vaccinations and testing. The group offers training sessions monthly, providing education in CPR, AED, emergency first aid, mass vaccination efforts, and more. MRC GEM is seeking new, especially younger, members to continue their valuable work in times of crisis.   Story 3: unemployment Georgia's unemployment rate remained steady at 3.2% in June, below the national rate of 3.6%. The state reached an all-time high in the number of jobs, with 4.9 million jobs added, growing across various sectors like accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance, and durable goods manufacturing. The number of employed Georgians also reached a record high of 5.3 million. Initial jobless claims were down by 2% in June, and over the year, first-time unemployment claims fell by 9%. Additionally, the Gwinnett County Board of Education approved other leadership appointments for central office positions.   Story 5: sparks   The Georgia Power's Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion project is facing ongoing debate and criticism due to its doubled cost and extended construction time. Utility watchdogs and clean energy advocates argue that the benefits of nuclear power will not outweigh the increasing costs for customers. The state regulators' consultants estimate that the company could collect $2.1 billion more from ratepayers due to delays in completing the project. Despite criticism, Public Service Commissioner Lauren "Bubba" McDonald defends Vogtle, claiming that the power produced will be cheap and clean. Meanwhile, other states like Kentucky and West Virginia are exploring nuclear energy options.
