In December 2019, Stephanie Browitt boarded a tour to Whakaari, also known as White Island, with her father Paul and younger sister Krystal during a family cruise through New Zealand. At 2:11pm, the volcano erupted. Krystal was killed on the island. Stephanie and Paul survived, but suffered catastrophic burns. Weeks later, Paul died from his injuries too. Stephanie spent months in hospital undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and rehabilitation, while her mother Marie faced the unimaginable reality of caring for her surviving daughter while grieving both her husband and youngest child. In the years since the eruption, Stephanie has spoken publicly about her recovery and become a powerful advocate for burns survivors and body acceptance. But Marie has rarely spoken in depth about what happened to their family — until now. In this extraordinarily intimate and emotional conversation with Kate Langbroek, Stephanie and Marie sit down together for their most extensive interview to date, speaking candidly about survival, visible scars, grief, motherhood, survivor’s guilt, humour, resilience, and the bond that carried them through unimaginable loss. I bumped into a mate at the supermarket yesterday and one of the first things he said to me was, “Where's Christopher Luxon?”. And I knew straight away what he was getting at. He was echoing the sentiment of political commentators over the weekend who were asking why the Prime Minister isn't front and centre of the government's response to the fuel situation. Not that Nicola Willis seems to be complaining. She appears to be relishing the opportunity to be the government's mouthpiece. Which is rather unusual given what we've become used to in recent years. Particularly since Covid - but we saw it before then too. Jacinda Ardern is the most obvious comparison. But John Key, as well. On the day of the big quake, he called an urgent cabinet meeting, then he was straight on a plane to Christchurch. Jacinda Ardern was the same after the mosque attacks. She was front and centre when the White Island tragedy happened, and, as we know, she was the face of her government's Covid response. These commentators who were talking about Christopher Luxon over the weekend were making the inevitable comparison to Jacinda Ardern. And it's something I've been thinking about too. This fuel situation is Christopher Luxon's opportunity to shine. But, apart from photos on social media of him on the blower to other world leaders talking fuel, that's about it. The rest of the time it's either Nicola Willis on her own or Nicola Willis with the Prime Minister at her side. And I don't think it's doing him any favours at all. Take Friday, for example. The Prime Minister was in Christchurch for the official opening of the new One New Zealand Stadium - while he let Nicola Willis front the government's fuel update. As one commentator put it: “It is difficult to imagine his predecessors - Ardern, Key or Helen Clark - surrendering such a platform at such a time.” Nicola Willis is doing a very good job in front of the fuel response. But, in my mind, she's doing a job the Prime Minister should be doing. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, due diligence engineers Richard Robinson and Gaye Francis discuss New Zealand's Health and Safety at Work Amendment Bill and explore why New Zealand is leading the in workplace health and safety. They break down the key changes in the amendment, including a sharper focus on critical risk and what this means for both large organisations and small PCBUs. The conversation touches on the real-world prosecutions that appear to have motivated the reform, including the White Island volcanic eruption and the conviction of the former CEO of the Port of Auckland.Richard and Gaye also reflect on how many organisations are getting too consumed by lower-level compliance activity while the critical risks get deprioritised or ignored entirely. If you'd like us to cover a specific topic or have any feedback we'd love to hear from you. Kin by Tayari Jones - who was the author of a wonderful book called An American Marriage a few years ago, which I loved. In this new one, Vernice and Annie are both motherless, close as sisters, growing up in small town Louisiana during the Jim Crow years. Their lives take them in different directions - Vernice to Atlanta and college, whilst Annie heads to Memphis in constant search of the mother who abandoned her. It's stunningly written, about two Black women navigating the prejudice, misogyny and cruelty of that era and whose bond with each other stands the test of time and distance. Surviving White Island by Kelsey Waghorn. Kelsey was a tour guide on Whakaari White Island and was caught up in the devastating eruption there in 2019, which changed her life forever. This is her account of what happened - the aftermath, injuries, recovery and sheer grit required to get through each day, in a memoir which is both brave and inspirational from a young woman whose future changed in an unimaginable instant. An opinion new health and safety regulatory reforms is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The Government's change makes clear landowners won't be responsible if people are injured on their property, while doing recreational activities. Fault will lie with the organisations running them. It used the prosecution of the company that grants access to White Island after it erupted as one reason for the change. Health and Safety Lawyer Grant Nicholson told Mike Hosking that's the only example of the law getting muddy. He says ultimately the court did its job —with the company later acquitted— and the law worked as intended. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I am thrilled for the White Island company that had their conviction quashed on appeal on Friday. White Island and its judicial process has worried me from the get go. Work and Safety appeared to panic in their response to the disaster. Make no mistake, what happened at the island was a disaster and a tragedy. But it was a natural disaster and tragedy, and what level of legal recompense was required was questionable from the start. But the approach that Work and Safety took appeared to be a panic-driven “scatter gun” affair, whereby all-and-sundry faced a barrage of charges in the hope some of the judicial mud would stick. The brothers who owned the island faced a couple of charges. One was dropped but they were found guilty on the other. They appealed it and have had it, quite rightly, turned over. The company simply gave licences to conduct tours. They didn't per se "manage" anything and therefore could not be held accountable for what others directly did. I still believe a lot of the other charges were overreach, given the nature of a volcano. Adventure tourism, by its nature, carries risk. A live volcano, by its nature, carries risk. At some point the people who buy into that, as in the visitors, must take some level of responsibility. From what I could see or have read about no one acted recklessly, they weren't crazy and there was no daredevil behaviour involved. It was an unforeseen disaster. As the judge pointed out, given the island company simply handed out licences, what was there to manage? He also pointed out, quite rightly as far as I can see, that we are dealing with bare ground, so there's not a lot to manage there. Many of those charged pled guilty early on. I'm convinced they did it not because they believed they were, but because it was easy, whether on legal advice or not to simply cave and pay. This quashing is proof that it didn't need to be that way. All the charges that were dropped is proof it didn't need to be this way. So how much damage, stress, money, energy and failed business do we have from an agency that, it looks increasingly likely, set about things in a very haphazard, if not dangerous, way. And yet they're in no way being held to any level of account. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
