In December 2019, Stephanie Browitt boarded a tour to Whakaari, also known as White Island, with her father Paul and younger sister Krystal during a family cruise through New Zealand. At 2:11pm, the volcano erupted. Krystal was killed on the island. Stephanie and Paul survived, but suffered catastrophic burns. Weeks later, Paul died from his injuries too. Stephanie spent months in hospital undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and rehabilitation, while her mother Marie faced the unimaginable reality of caring for her surviving daughter while grieving both her husband and youngest child. In the years since the eruption, Stephanie has spoken publicly about her recovery and become a powerful advocate for burns survivors and body acceptance. But Marie has rarely spoken in depth about what happened to their family — until now. In this extraordinarily intimate and emotional conversation with Kate Langbroek, Stephanie and Marie sit down together for their most extensive interview to date, speaking candidly about survival, visible scars, grief, motherhood, survivor’s guilt, humour, resilience, and the bond that carried them through unimaginable loss. Charges against two booking agents accused of health and safety failings in the Whakaari / White Island trial have been dismissed. The companies, ID Tours and Tauranga Tourism Services, had been accused of not providing detailed, up to date health and safety information about tours to Whakaari, to cruise liner Royal Caribbean. The Judge, Evangelos Thomas, says the two companies were only liable for their own workers and workplaces. Neither company operated on Whakaari. Simon Schofield from Auckland University's faculty of law says because the tourist operators didn't have any workers on the island, it wasn't a workplace, the judge ruled that therefore they shouldn't be liable. Schofield spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

We're putting a bow on the 2022 run of London Calling as James and Toby compare the respective sizes of their Christmas trees, the parties and dinners they've been to in the run-up to the holidays, and their favourite Christmas movies. In the news we cover Jeremy Clarkson's Game of Thrones fantasy about Meghan Markle, whether climate activists believe in their own rhetoric or are just using global warming as an excuse to take away our liberty, and then we put on turbans, fire up the crystal ball and try to divine what 2023 has in store for us. In Culture Corner, the critical reception for Avatar: The Way of Water, whether James Cameron is ‘woke' or ‘awake', the unsatisfying last episode of Tokyo Vice, the gripping Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari (Netflix) and The English, a slightly odd series on the BBC starring Emily Blunt (available on Amazon Prime in the US) which Toby intends to persevere with between Christmas and New Year. And finally, how they both intend to spend Boxing Day (hunting for James, football for Toby). We'll see you all on January 2, 2023 and thanks for spending time with us every week. We're re-releasing former co-host Cameron Dexter's detailed account of the 2019 White Island Volcano disaster, in coincidence with yesterday's release of "The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari" on Netflix. "Survivors' and rescuers' accounts and minute-by-minute footage fuel this gripping documentary about the deadly 2019 volcanic eruption in New Zealand."-NetflixCam covers the fatal eruption of the New Zealand White Island volcano on December 9, 2019. What they didn't know is that they were hiking straight into the belly of the beast – an active volcano that had just been elevated in eruption risk. But no one told the tourists of the extra risk that they'd be taking that day, and only 25 of them would survive to tell the horrific tale.-If you'd just like to support your gals and the show, you can head over to patreon.com/TSFU and join for as little as $5 a month!
