Paul Harvey - Winnie Ruth Judd
Violet Grimm knew something was wrong when Ruthie, her tenant, came to the door. She looked tired, and she seemed preoccupied and nervous. She was hoping that Violet's husband, Howard, could help her with some luggage. H.J. Mapes was the baggageman on the train that night. He'd been with the Southern Pacific Railroad for 23 years and had managed thousands of bags, so he knew right away that something was wrong with the large steamer trunk that had been loaded in Phoenix. He noticed a strange smell and then when he looked closer, he was sure that it was leaking blood. Don't forget to send in your nomination for the Podcast Listener Of The Year award! On October 18th, 1931, Winnie Ruth Judd boarded a train to Los Angeles with a bandaged hand and foul-smelling luggage that leaked blood. Once she disembarked the train, she quickly departed, leaving behind her baggage. When police pried open the trunks to inspect the contents, they discovered the bodies of two murdered women, one of whom was dismembered. Author Laurie Notaro shares the life and crimes of the infamous Winnie Ruth Judd. She examines the historical context of the crimes to provide a different, more tragic version of the story as detailed in her upcoming book, The Murderess. On October 20, 1931, baggage agents in Los Angeles received a tip that two trunks on the incoming Southern Pacific Railroad could contain contraband material. When the agents located the suspicious trunks, they opened them and were horrified to find within them the dismembered remains of Anne LeRoi and Hedvig Samuelson, two young women who had gone missing in Arizona days earlier. Both women had been shot to death. Railroad agents quickly traced the trunks back to twenty-six-year-old Winnie Ruth Judd, but Judd disappeared into the crowd before authorities could apprehend and question her. Two days later, Judd surrendered to the LAPD, setting off one of the decade's most sensational murder cases and making Winnie Ruth Judd, the “Trunk Murderess,” an object of public curiosity for decades to follow. Some called her a butcher and a psychopath, yet many others found it impossible to believe that she'd acted alone or that she was anything more than an unwilling accomplice. Winnie Ruth Judd was ultimately found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, but her life was spared, and her sentence was overturned when psychiatrists determined her to be mentally incompetent and she was sent to a psychiatric institution. Judd spent thirty years in an Arizona mental institution, from which she escaped and was recaptured six times, before finally winning parole in 1971. When luggage leaking blood arrived at a Los Angeles train depot in 1931, the woman who'd traveled with the items feigned ignorance -- and then disappeared, leading to a nationwide manhunt that captivated the nation. Because one of the two victims found inside the Winnie Ruth Judd's trunks had been dismembered -- and because both she and the victims were beautiful women -- the case generated hundreds of headlines and a memorable moniker: The Trunk Murderess. But were prosecutors' theories about the Phoenix, Arizona, deaths really true? Or did Judd take the fall for a well-connected accomplice? Buried in Arizona's time capsule lies a story that continues to be dug up over time: the tale of the infamous "Trunk Murderess," or Winnie Ruth Judd, a woman accused of double murder who escaped a state hospital several times and told different accounts of the story through the years. There's been speculation over the years about whether Judd committed these violent acts by herself and the motive that prompted her to kill her friends. Did she kill them due to a scandalous affair gone wrong? Was the murder out of self defense and facilitated by a lover? Different accounts over time, some from Judd herself, show Arizonans that the full story of that night is clearly unknown — and it may stay that way. This week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com about metro Phoenix and beyond, dives back into the case of the "Trunk Murderess" and the plot holes that have haunted Arizona for decades. Winnie Ruth Judd was a complicated individual. On one hand she was the depressed wife of a doctor who had become addicted to morphine, and on the other she was having an affair with a successful man who asked her to introduce friends and acquaintances to him so he could in turn sleep with them too. It was never going to end well.Sources: wikipedia, phoenix new times.com, the Arizona memory project, the ingen web project

In 1931, train workers detect a foul stench coming from a suitcase left at a Los Angeles train station. Initially, police think that the case contains illegally-smuggled meat, but when they open the suitcase, they discover a badly abused corpse. The story behind the macabre find centers on three women who lived together in a small apartment in Phoenix. What started as a strong friendship between them was put to the test when a 44-year-old man began to frequent their apartment - and started relationships with all three of them. The jealousy that ensued was a powerful force, that drove one woman to commit a heinous crime. From Podimo and Vespucci — this is The Darkness Vaults, released weekly on Wednesday.

At first, he assumed that someone was transporting deer meat interstate, but he was mistaken… The black travel trunks contained something far more sinister. Join us this week for a “fun-cactus” episode as we head down to Phoenix, Arizona. Meredith shares with us the case of the Trunk Murders from 1931. You will be introduced to a seemingly sweet young woman named Winnie Ruth Judd. In an attempt to avoid her husband and a rather “prickly” marriage, Ruth moved to Phoenix to start fresh. She would engaged in an illicit affair with “Happy” Jack Halloran, who was a bit of a “cactass”. Ruth made friends with Agnes “Annie” Leroi and Hedvig “Sammy” Samuelson. This friendship wouldn't last long though… For astrology, we continue to discuss Aquarius and throw in a Sagittarius Moon. On Monday 1/31 there will be a new moon in Aquarius and Friday 2/4 Mars in Capricorn will be sextile Jupiter in Pisces.
En 1931, Phoenix, Arizona fue sacudido por el doble asesinato de dos mujeres, que hasta el momento no es muy claro que fue lo que paso esa noche de otoño.
Former FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong explores the case of Winnie Ruth Judd, The Trunk Slayer. Ruth made headlines in the 1930's when news broke that she had killled two of her friends, chopped them up, and took their body parts with her to California. But when Candice researches the case, she learns there is much more to Ruth than the media's moniker of her as a "crazy axe murderess."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
It was October 16, 1931, when Winnie Ruth Judd bought a train ticket, boarded the vessel with the two traveling trunks, and made her way to Los Angeles. En route, the trunks began to leak and emit a horrible smell. Police greeted Judd at the Los Angeles station and asked her to open the trunks. Winnie was afraid and mortified on the inside, but her outward demeanor was coy and stand-offish. When asked to smell the trunks, she leaned in and claimed that she couldn't smell anything at all. The baggage attendants pushed her to open the trunks. Claiming that her husband had the keys, she fled the scene. What would occur next would leave many asking what happened and who was responsible? In 1931, Winnie Ruth Judd was accused of killing her two best friends in Phoenix, chopping up one of the bodies, then taking the dead bodies in trunks on a train to LA. Deemed the "Trunk Murderess," she was caught and charged with murder, but ended up in an insane asylum where she would escape 6 times. But did Winnie Ruth commit the murders on her own? Journalist Briana Whitney investigates.

Winnie Ruth Judd reached notoriety in Phoenix, Arizona in 1931 when she was stopped at an LA train station with two dead bodies in trunks. The victims were Judd’s former roommates, Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvid “Sammy” Samuelson. She was promptly extradited back to Arizona to stand trial. While she was charged and found guilty of the murder of Agnes LeRoi, many don’t believe she had anything to do with the crime. Winnie Ruth Judd’s case has turned into a local conspiracy theory with many believing if she was guilty of anything, it was of either self-defense or disposing of a body and that in fact the real perpetrator was none other than “Happy” Jack Halloran. Halloran was a giant in the lumber business at the time with many ties to prominent local people with power. Was Winnie made out to be a scapegoat? Or is she truly deserving of the name The Trunk Murderess? What’s in the box? What’s in the box?! A hatbox is inherently suggestive of a bygone era, in which men and women wore proper hats that they would protect in transit with a container called a hatbox. In this week’s story about Winnie Ruth Judd’s 1931 arrival by train in Los Angeles, a hatbox gets used for a grossly inappropriate purpose that ends up kicking off one hell of a story. Join us this week as we stay put in our home state of Arizona for a look at The Trunk Murderess; Winnie Ruth Judd.
Eighty-eight years ago, Winnie Ruth Judd traveled from Phoenix to Los Angeles with trunks oozing out blood. Initially, police thought the trunks contained illegal deer meat. After flies began circling the abandoned luggage, police opened the trunks, only to discover Agnes "Anne" LeRoi's full body in one and Hedvig "Sammy" Samuelson's dismembered body in another one. The Oct. 16, 1931 murders put the then-sleepy city of Phoenix on the map. The murderous tale and subsequent court proceedings made national headlines. And with so many unanswered questions, the mystery behind Judd's story continues to capture attention. Did Judd alone kill the two women? Why are there still so many questions surrounding the murder? How did she escape so many times from state hospital? In this week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, producer Maritza Dominguez explores the tale of the "Trunk Murderess." In this episode, you'll hear: Jana Bommersbach, author of the book "The Trunk Murderess: Winnie Ruth Judd", gives a look at Winnie's life before and after the murders. Marshall Shore, the "Hip Historian", describe what Phoenix was like in the 1930's. Winnie Ruth Judd, in a 1969 interview, tells her version of what happened that night.

Cemeteries have always carried a mystique about them and many people expect them to be haunted. For the most part, cemeteries are very peaceful places. After all, why would the dead want to hang out with the dead? Most haunted cemetery stories consist of an apparition returning to their plot or a hitchhiking ghost being dropped off outside of a cemetery. But Maltby Cemetery is different. Rumors of Satanism and thirteen steps to Hell have given this cemetery quite the reputation. Is it just a place where teenagers go to hang out and drink and act stupid or is there truth to the legends? Join us as we explore Maltby Cemetery!
