When corruption runs rampant, and the powerful exploit the weak, only a hero can defend the people, and bring the unjust to their knees. A Robin Hood of the east must team up with a Chinese folk hero in order to bring down a powerful government official with a deadly Buddha palm! Death-dealing nuns, killer Shaolin monks, and an army of soldiers can't stop the righteous efforts of the one and only… IRON MONKEY! Listen in as we discuss the 1993 “wire-fu” classic, ‘Iron Monkey', directed by the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping and produced by visionary filmmaker Tsui Hark. Included in this over the top martial arts extravaganza is a diverse and eclectic cast, led by superstar Donnie Yen, genre favorite Yu Rongguang, and… a female Wong Fei Hung?! Add to that some absolutely INSANE fight scenes, and this film is perfect for die-hard martial arts film aficionados, or those interested in dipping their toes into the world of Kung Fu cinema for the first time! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
The criminally unknown film, Dreadnaught, is one of Master Yuen Woo Ping's most underrated films. An ensemble cast with a young Yuen Biao taking the everyman role, everyone from Bryan Leung's Foon to Yuen Shun-Yi's truly unhinged villain White Tiger just chew up every scene they're in.The legendary Kwan Tak-Hing's Wong Fei Hung delights in all the right ways and very wisely and sparingly used for great effect, around which the simmering slasher type thriller on the loose story revolves. The film is liberally sprinkled with incredible fight scenes from fun to life threatening and characters who are genuinely funny, loveable and loathsome. If you've seen it you already know, if you're a fan of golden age martial arts cinema and you haven't then do yourself a favour and treat yourself to this film, epic romp!
New episode alert! This week, Gavin and I are tackling one of the greatest Kung Fu movies of all time. YES, we have said this before, but this is truly one of the masterpieces of old school Kung Fu Cinema- ‘Martial Club' (1981). Directed by Kung Fu visionary Lau Kar Leung, and starring the iconic Gordon Liu as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung, this master class in martial arts filmmaking has all the elements of an all-time classic, and it doesn't disappoint! With an emphasis on 武德 or “martial arts ethics”, this picture showcases not only the physical aspects of Chinese martial arts, but also the honor and morals that go along with it. You've got North vs. South, kicks vs. fists, righteous vs. dishonest-this along with ferocious fight scenes from start to finish, and an opening lion dance sequence that has to be seen to be believed, and ‘Martial Club' delivers one heck of a ride! To add to all of that, you've got some of the most technical Kung Fu choreography ever displayed on screen, which is why it's easy to see why ‘Martial Club' might just be the pinnacle of Kung Fu cinema! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
It's a return to Kung Fu on the Shawscope boxset with the tale of folk hero Wong Fei Hung.Callenge of the Masters (1976). Directed by Lai Kar Lueng. Starring Gordon Liu, Lily Li and Kwan Tai Chen.
The Super Bros. have socially distanced this episode. Ivan and Enrique go to a taping of "The Masked Singer." Stevens reveals her love for Puerto Rican sensation Cheyenne. Enrique recalls a movie from his childhood, "Un Sabado Mas," and was possibly traumatized by "The Neverending Story." In the show's second half, the Super Bros. review "The Forbidden Kingdom," starring Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and Michael Angarano. An American teenager obsessed with Martial Arts movies transports to Ancient China via a magical staff. With the help of an Orphan, a Drunken Master, and a Mysterious Monk, the young man must rescue the Monkey King and battle the evil forces of the Jade Warlord. Is the fight between Wong Fei Hung and Wong Fei Hung the most epic part of this movie? Why is this movie better than it should be? Does this movie trigger a random memory in Enrique and spark a morbid conversation?
Jet Li září v jednom z nejlepších akčních filmů všech dob, volném remaku slavného Fist of Fury od Bruce Lee. Dokáže Mr. Hlad neusnout během imfova hodinového monologu? Je Chen Zhen lepší než Wong Fei-Hung? Je Jet Li lepší než Donnie Yen? Tolik otázek a tak málo času. Martial arts whirlwind Jet Li has kicked an incalculable amount of ass over his cinematic career, from his early Hong Kong hits like ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA (playing his signature role, Wong Fei Hung) and FIST OF LEGEND, through his Hollywood breakthrough in LETHAL WEAPON 4 and ROMEO MUST DIE. His legendary status even qualified him to join other action stars in THE EXPENDABLES. But during the last decade, his output drastically diminished and concerns were raised about his health. Follow the flying fists and find out “WTF Happened to JET LI!”
In this sobering episode, Elijah challenges Vanessa to find the perfect horror pairing for the wine-soaked martial arts masterpiece that is Drunken Master 2. After some frank talks about addiction (Sorry, Grandma!), Vanessa counters with another all-time cinematic classic of violence and spirits, The Shining. But aside from their mutual love of a stiff drink, how much do Jack Torrance and Wong Fei Hung really have in common? Does alcohol make Elijah better at fighting? And is Vanessa really who she says she is? Hear the answers to all these questions and more, in this week's double-feature discussion. The official snack pairing of Drunken Master 2 and The Shining is drunken noodles and an unrelated side of french fries with ketchup. We probably ought to have started this series with Once Upon a Time In China, yeah? We're knee deep in Tsui Hark goodness in Part 2 of our journey back to Hong Kong. A lesser podcast would dedicate an entire episode to Wong Fei Hung's acclaimed series of epic adventures, but we got the gist after the first one and moved on to soup-stuffed fish. Saludos ninjas, shinobis! Join Sarah, Mick and Aidan as they get thrown into the deep end with Director's Lottery winner Tsui Hark's classic martial arts film which stars Jet Li as the legendary Wong Fei Hung - "Once upon a Time in China" (Part I, for those keeping count). After that it's time for a run down of our other featured films, and this week Sarah joins an octogenarian Burt Reynolds for Adam Rifkin's ode to a screen legend - "The Last Movie Star". The time has come. We've been relying on making sequels to other people's movies for too long. This time we made a sequel to our own movie that we also came up with this episode. We took lessons from some of the world's biggest franchises: Santo Contra el Cerebro del Mal, Wong Fei Hung, and Scooby Doo. Did I mention that by "big", I just mean that they have a lot of movies in them? Even Houston hadn't heard of half of these movies. Also, we try extremely hard to be very diverse in our casting and we end up crashing real hard. We are sorry in advance for being so white. Anyways, follow along as we create the first 10,000-film franchise in the name of sustainability and profits. Check out our sponsor and friend of the show, Edward the App, at www.edwardtheapp.com. A távol-keleti harcművészet óriási jelentőségű mesterének életét 2008 óta számos alkalommal dolgozták fel, mi most ezek közül is az első filmmel, a Donnie Yen főszereplésével készült Ip Man című 2008-as filmmel foglalkozunk. Új blokkunkban a távol-keleti harcművészettel foglalkozunk, azon belül is kínai, hongkongi mozifilmekkel. Időrendben az első választottunk az 1991-es Volt egyszer egy Kína, angol címén Once Upon a Time in China, amely a kínai népi hős, Wong Fei-Hung életéről szól Jet Li főszereplésével. A kínai nevek kiejtésével hősies harcot folytatva igyekszünk történelmi és filmtörténeti kontextusba is helyezni a mitikus Wong Fei-Hung karakterét. Teljesen laikusként megküzdünk azzal, hogy a wire-fu alzsáner kialakulásának az okait meghatározzuk, ezzel kockáztatva, hogy magunkra haragítjuk a műfaj rajongóinak seregeit. Legalább ilyen eposzi a csatánk a túlkomplikált történetszálak kibogozásával, valamint a hirtelen stílusváltásokkal, amelynek során magyarázatot próbálunk találni a csetlős-botlós poénokra is ebben a véresen komoly filmben. Végezetül eláruljuk, miért találkozunk jövő héten is Wong Fei-Hunggal. Kitekintő A Volt egyszer egy Kín végső leszámolásához kapcsolódóan a kedvenc film végi összecsapásainkat rangsoroltuk.
