Today we're talking to Jordan Harbinger. Jordan is a Wall Street lawyer turned podcast interviewer with an approachable style and knack for securing high-profile guests. His podcast, The Jordan Harbinger Show, was selected as part of Apple's “Best of 2018.”Jordan is a legend in the podcasting space, averaging 10 million downloads a month. He's an OG podcaster and has been podcasting for 17 years at this point. In this episode we dive deep into why he named his show the Jordan Harbinger show,  the nitty gritty details of how to properly host a guest on a podcast, how to come up with questions no one has asked before, and much more. If you're looking to create a world class podcast or take your interviewing skills to the next level, this episode is a must listen. Key Lessons:As a podcast host, if you have no input you're commoditizing your product. As a podcaster, your co creating the episode with the guest, not just giving the guest a space to repeat the same talking points they've said on 100 other shows. As a host you separate yourself with your prep by reading the subtext. What's not being said in the text, what being left out but would be an interesting story, ask yourself questions you would ask the person. If you want to have a 1% podcast you have to put in 1% work. This isn't something we directly talk about, but it's clear from talking to Jordan just how much sheer effort he's put into refining himself as a host, storyteller, and just general conversationalist. Being 1% is a mindset of never mailing it in and always finding ways to improve. He does his own research, has a variety of coaches to work on minute little skills, and responds when people reach out to him. Most people don't even bother doing research. Links: Jordan's website: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/Kobe Bryant interview:  https://www.jordanharbinger.com/kobe-bryant-dissecting-the-mamba-mentality/Tim Grover interview: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/tim-grover-the-unforgiving-race-to-greatness/Seth Godin interview: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/seth-godin-shipping-creative-work/Mark Cuban interview: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/mark-cuban-tales-from-the-shark-side/Howie Mandel interview: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/howie-mandel-a-conversation-about-mental-health-talent-and-perseverance/

His vision? To teach the world how to live happily no matter where they are today. “It's about the journey, not the destination.” Like most people, Justin thought that it was his past that defined him. Because he didn't come from a great upbringing and didn't have the resources so many had, he thought that he was destined to fail. Then, at 19 years old Justin discovered personal development through a mentor. He became obsessed with the idea that he can have full control over the outcome of his life simply by choosing to grow. The realization that it doesn't matter where he comes from, but the choices that he makes today to create a better tomorrow for himself and others is all that matters, was life-changing. When Justin launched the Growth Now Movement podcast in 2016, he had no idea what it would become. Now it gets played in over 100 countries every single week, he speaks all over the country on overcoming adversity, and most importantly, he discovered that we all have the power to create our own happiness, to grow into the person we were meant to be and that we can all create the life we truly desire.   *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit our website: RockBottom2RockinIt.com. *** Feedback? One of the easiest ways to start a podcast is to start an interview show. However, most people are not good at interviewing. The upside is, interviewing is a skill, and it can be learned. As a podcast interviewer, it's imperative to have a genuine interest in your guest and what they do — your listeners can sense this as you speak. And that's just the first step.Today, we talk about the ins and outs of interviewing, and tips for getting better at it.Main Takeaways Interviewing is a skill and it can be learned. However, don't just do interviews to make the count; be sure to be mindful of how you're doing it, and track your progress. Having a genuine interest in your guest and being endlessly curious about them and their story is key.  Interview people who are aligned with the moral of the show and who will be interesting to your listeners. Prepare like a professional. Great interviewers take time to prepare. Do your research, listen to your guest's past interviews, write down the possible gaps, and use those gaps to outline your interview. Ask about a story, and about transformation. These two things can turn a boring interview into a great one. Introduce your guest well. A bio is very helpful, but don't just read the bio. Great stories don't have to start at the beginning. Touch on a driving force first and then lead the interview. Creator of the Day Jerry Colonna Logic Resource of the Day The Turnaround Power Your Podcast with Storytelling Thought Of The Day“Interview podcasts can still be a powerful way to grow your audience. What is China up to over there on the eastern front? In recent years, its economy has had steady growth, and its foreign activities in other countries has changed. Some may call it a success, some may see China’s new rise as a threat, while others say that China still has a long way to go. Interested in getting to the bottom of China’s strategies, Jens is talking very fast and very much for the first part of the show, in order to get through a (very) brief history of China Then we go deep into China’s “state capitalist” economic model, and also the study of international power dynamics, in our exploration of the academic “power transition theory”. To not be all academic and (let’s be honest) sleep-inducing, our inquiry led us to conversations with political scientist and election observationist Maria Møller Kursch, who gives us a perspective on China’s bizarre involvement with Kazakstan’s politics, and also Stig Thøgersen, a professor of Sinology at Aarhus University, who let us in on what he thinks are the major developmental challenges China still faces. After listening, you will be up-to-date with the most important perspectives on China’s role in the world at the moment, with concrete examples to show off with, next time you discuss China with your dog or grandmother or whoever agrees to listen. Academics: John Mearsheimer, Steve Chan, Karsten Rauch and Iris Wurm

The UN is the world’s most idealistic organization: a place where representatives of countries all over the world can get together and talk about governance, peace, human rights, and a bunch of other nice stuff. As fluffy as these conversations may seem, they have a life or death impact on millions of those suffering from the hardships of war and oppression around the world. In this episode of World Class Podcast, we talk about the golden age of humanitarian intervention, its apparent slow down since 9/11, and ask one of the toughest ideological questions of all: can we as a global society possibly share some universal values? Should human rights be prioritized over the sovereignty of countries? Where has humanitarian intervention succeeded and failed? We ask ourselves these questions and also pass them on to Tonny Brems Knudsen, political scientist and an decade-long expert on the UN and humanitarian interventions. He gives us his perspective on why there has been a lack of action in the face of atrocities in Syria and recently during the Rohingya-crisis in Myanmar.

When we say it, you will immediately think of all sorts of polarizing and intense stories, experiences, and images, built up in the last few years through, for most of us, words in a news story. In this episode of World Class Podcast, we talk about terrorism (!), and try to break the word down into definitions you may not have thought of before. With the help of theory from world-leading academics, we question whether or not terrorism has changed over time and because of globalization, and reveal some key myths about terrorism which we all, at one time or another, have been victim to. We also talk with award winning war journalist, Nagieb Khaja, who has been captured by the Taliban and also contributed invaluable knowledge to our understanding of terrorism through his documentaries on foreign fighters in Syria. He gives us first hand understanding of what some of the causes are of terrorism, what we can focus on to combat it and how we should understand terrorism. After listening, you won’t fall in any traps in the future, when assessing terrorism. In a strange way, Kylee and Jens felt comforted after exploring the topic - after all, it’s more likely that a lightning strikes you than that you die from a terrorist attack.

What does North Korea, Trump, Putin and China's investment in infrastructure in Africa all have in common? They’re international relations. Maybe you’ve heard the term thrown around by people who sound to you a bit intelligent. Maybe these people are, or maybe they’re just using a couple words to sound smart. The good news is, now you can do the same! In this first episode of World Class Podcast, we go over the four major academic international relations theories, or, the four main ways those quasi-intelligent (or truly intelligent) people talk about international relationships between countries, institutions and other actors. Already bored? Then check this out: After listening, you will have new ways of understanding and framing international relations, which, trust us, is a really cool party trick. As a bonus, we provide you with a starter-kit by framing (spoiler-alert) Kim Jong-un’s thoughts behind killing off his brother in Kuala Lumpur airport and the deployment of Russian troops in the Balkans by Putin. If this doesn’t get you started in your new life as an IR-analyst, nothing will.

We’ve all been touched by international charity before - whether its an emotion-filled advertisement on TV or our own experiences giving money hoping it will reach far off places. Our governments do as well, with every country in the world giving or receiving some form of development assistance or foreign aid at some point in the last 50 years. But aid, like everything, has its flaws. In this episode of World Class Podcast, we talk about the good and bad parts of aid, exploring perspectives from those who steadfastly believe it is the key to helping the world’s poor, to those who believe it creates chronic poverty and is a waste of money. Rounding out this analysis is our conversation with Anne Mette Kjær, a politics and development professor at Aarhus University, and also a board member of DanChurchAid, one of Denmark’s biggest aid organizations. She tells us where she thinks aid can really make a difference in the continent that she’s spent her life working in: Africa. After listening, your opinion about aid will be much more qualified, you will know what to support and where your money would be spent better on Ben & Jerry’s.

Ep. 67: WTF Producer Brendan McDonald on Booking Obama & Producing a World-Class Podcast w/ Marc Maron

This week I talk to Brendan McDonald, producer of WTF with Marc Maron. We talk about the finer points of producing a world-class podcast, including booking the President of the United States, Barack Obama on their show.   Brendan is the yin and Marc is the yang in making WTF get made. Brendan explains in details of the operations and production around creating their podcast, how they work together, and how booking President Obama was a year in the making.   Additionally we learn about how collaboration is key when building a successful podcast, and how having no agenda when creating a show like WTF is what makes it stand-out in the podcast world.   Great quotes from Brendan   “Having the White House reach out to us is the reason that (the interview) happened. We wouldn’t have been so bold as to go the other way. I think that was just a huge win for podcasting in general. He has his pick of media outlets, a lot of options at the disposal of the President if he wants to communicate to the country and the world. So it’s very validating to know that podcasting had achieved a level of acceptance in the media landscape.” “That kind of yin and yang makes the relationship work—not just as professional colleagues. We’ve been friends for eleven years now.” “In the six hundred plus episodes we’ve done, we won’t do promotional interviews for the full episode... Mark will graciously have his friends over sometimes and do ten minutes at the beginning of an episode to help somebody that has a book out or a movie out, or something like that. His feeling about that is it’s kind of like an everybody can help everybody out situation. It’s not that we go requesting promotional stuff. It’s that people were gracious enough to appear on our show, which helped raise our tide quite a bit, so of course we’re going to pay the favor back.” Find out more about The Influencer Economy book:   http://www.influencereconomy.com/

No, not the Neil Young song, but Wilma. She tore through South Florida with a fury none of us seasoned hurricane veterans expected, at least here on Florida's east coast. But today, almost 2 weeks later, we find many of our friends and neighbors still powerless-- literally and figuratively. Most of the world doesn't know how the streets of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale resemble a war zone. Trees and traffic lights are down everywhere, the roads are almost impossible to navigate and kids have been out of school for 2 weeks. It looks like a war zone. People are downhearted and shell-shocked. Businesses are hurting, mine included. When I put up the last podcast, it was just after Hurricane Katrina, and I did a short musical tribute to the Gulf States, and disseminated information on ways we could all help those affected. All that information is still here on the Radio Or Not blog (just look at the previous post). If you'd like to help the victims of Wilma as you helped those who were subject to Katrina's wrath, there are many down here who would be extremely grateful. Today, I'll use this space and the very special podcast I put together to promote my own businesses! It takes time to build a business, and I've only been at it a little over a year. Wilma stopped it all cold. So, ss we approach the holiday season, and we're all starting to think about what to give our family and friends, I invite you to check out the offerings at Legacy Group Unlimited! We offer wonderful gifts made from your precious, priceless photographs. From custom DVDs made from your family photos, home movies, slides & memorabilia to beautiful photo handbags to sharing all the old family photos with your entire family, making leather-bound photo books, calendars, jewelry, jigsaw puzzles, and just about anything else you can think of from those photos we can help you with most of your holiday gift-giving! Thanks for supporting your sponsors! Enjoy the music in today's podcast... It's an assortment of songs recorded live in the KSCA Music Hall. Featuring The Jayhawks, Matthew Sweet, Lyle Lovett, Ben Harper, Kevin Gilbert, dada, Graham Parker & David Byrne doing unreleased live renditions of some songs you know, and some you've likely never heard before. If you like what you hear, tell your friends about the World Class Podcast at RadioOrNot.com. A quick postscript... The email address I gave out in the podcast is wrong. (That's what I get for posting so infrequently!). So, please feel free to send your comments to radioornot@gmail.com.
