Gareth Southgate OBE is the most successful England men's football manger in the modern game. He holds the record as the man who has represented England in more games than anyone else, with 102 games as men's senior team manager, 57 caps as a player and 37 as men's under-21 head coach, leading to a total of 196 games in which he has been involved as a player or coach. It's a remarkable career and one which shows his resilience and determination. Ever since he joined a football team as a schoolboy, he dreamed of being a footballer and perhaps one day, wearing the England shirt. He was rejected by Southampton as a teenager and was determined to come back and succeed. He managed to do that, playing for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough as a defender and midfielder. After his playing career ended he went into management eventually becoming one of the England national team's most successful managers. Along the way, his different approach to leadership in sport, together with his quest to understand what is Englishness makes him one of the most impressive football managers in England's history. Southgate is an Ambassador for The Prince's Trust and Help for Heroes.DISC ONE: The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby and the Range DISC TWO: Rainy Days and Mondays - Carpenters DISC THREE: Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears DISC FOUR: The Whole of the Moon - Waterboys DISC FIVE: One - Mary J. Es war der internationale Durchbruch für die New-Wave-Band Tears For Fears Mitte der 80er-Jahre. Doch fast hätte es der heutige Welthit „Everybody Wants To Rule The World” nicht auf ihr zweites Album geschafft, denn die Band war anfangs alles andere als begeistert von dem Song.
ViewThis podcast is based on the piece How Not to Change the World (in this very substack). Here is an excerpt …Starting with the acknowledgement that there is a culture war, and that, to some extent at least, we find ourselves in it - what do we do? For some, it seems that the point of the culture war is to keep fighting the culture war. Fighting this (good?) fight has become an identity and a mark of virtue. If that is you, I will say that it isn't your identity and it isn't a virtue. But even assuming that you want resolution to the culture war … resolutions to wars usually come from someone winning and someone losing. What would it mean to “win” the culture war?I can't stand this indecisionMarried with a lack of vision …Everybody wants to rule the worldAll for freedom and for pleasureNothing ever lasts foreverEverybody wants to rule the worldEverybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair - 1985Are we trying to change the world - to make the world better? What do we mean by that - some expression of culture that we think is better, even best? Are we seeking to move toward this goal by reducing, defeating, and eradicating the elements of culture that we don't think are best - those elements we hate or believe to be evil? We may argue that Christianity had something of this effect, especially from the third or fourth centuries into the modern era. Even so, to the extent that this is true, it isn't the biblical goal - it may be a transformative effect. Having this as a large-scale cultural goal isn't how you change the world. Changing the world isn't a good goal. If this sounds off to you, especially if you have been in the church for very long, I understand. We all want to change the world … except you won't find that teaching in the bible. You will find the promise, but not the command. I want to show you a simple example from the biblical narrative - but first, a parable of culture change from a family which may not be unlike your own.Read the whole thing here. The Embassy is a reader-supported publication. „Mad World“ ist der erste große Hit für Tears For Fears. Doch 20 Jahre später wird ausgerechnet eine Coverversion des Songs noch erfolgreicher als das Original. Und selbst Tears For Fears sagen heute: „Das Cover ist besser als unser Song“.

The Shuffologists discuss their favourite songs from 1985, realising that the majority of them (Liam and Josh) weren't even alive yet. Favourites include tunes by Madonna, Tears for Fears, and Whitney Houston (who made her debut in this year). Asabi has designs on expanding her relationship with Liam - he may or may not understand this yet - and Josh manages to insert Mariah references (even though she wasn't a thing yet). A scant week later, it's time for Live and Direct, episode #7. This week I've assembled a hypothetical soundtrack to the 80's comedy Real Genius, starring Val Kilmer. I say "hypothetical" because there was never an official soundtrack, however many fans have compiled their own lists of songs heard in the movie. This week's show is 44.5MB and runs for 50:36.The playlist for the show is below, along with the point in time at which each song starts (minutes:seconds). The only song played in the movie that is not included is Tonio K's "The Tuff Do What", as it is unreleased and apparently unavailable in the wild. (however, if you have it, please, please send me a copy?)You Took Advantage of Me - Carmen McRae, 01:31I'm Falling - The Comsat Angels, 03:32Number One - Chaz Jankel, 08:01All She Wants to Do Is Dance - Don Henley, 11:50One Night Love Affair - Bryan Adams, 17:01The Walls Came Down - The Call, 21:26Pleasure Seekers - The System, 25:47Standing in the Line - The Textones, 30:25Summertime Girls - Yesterday & Today, 34:51You're the Only Love - Paul Hyde and the Payola$, 38:25Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears, 44:16a Real Genius sequel? What you say? That's right, at the end of last year multiple news sites, wikipedia, and blogs were reporting that Val Kilmer has announced a desire to reprise his role as Chris Knight in a sequel to the original Real Genius. A fan has started a site dedicated to this hypothetical sequel. We'll see how that pans out. I suppose it could work, though I'm leery of sequels by default. If you haven't seen the movie, you should. In the immortal words of Chris Knight, it's a moral imperative!Enjoy this "what if" soundtrack, and as always, please let me know what you think.
