Hulle was geensins ryk nie. Inteendeel hulle was in werklikheid arm.

Preaching for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mary M. Doyle Roche reflects on the the ways Church teaching and the lectionary relegates women to the recesses of life in the world and in the Church: "Perhaps you too are trying to hold a place for the scriptures, for the lectionary, for the Church even as you face squarely the harms that they have perpetuated and given theological significance. I hope that we as Church can honor the reality of these experiences and all of the emotions that come with them, without looking away or glossing it all over. I hope we can allow ourselves to transform these recesses and shadows into spaces of resistance and solidarity from which we might emerge sure of our dignity, sure of the Spirit moving through us, and sure of God's love." Mary M. Doyle Roche is Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. She earned her PhD in theological ethics from Boston College and has pursued teaching and research interests in feminist ethics, health care ethics, and ethical issues that impact families, children, and young people. Most recently, she has co-edited with Jacob Kohlhaas, "Modern Catholic Family Teaching: Commentaries and Interpretations" (Georgetown University Press, 2024). Dr. Mary M. Alcaro, a visiting assistant professor of literature at Bryn Mawr College, takes us on a captivating journey through the intersections of plague, trauma, and Middle English texts. This episode kicks off our new interview series with Dr. Alcaro, who shares her path from undergraduate curiosity to a dissertation on the social and psychological effects of the Black Death. Through her fascinating insights, we uncover the profound influence of the plague on language and its lasting impact on literary theory and the history of medicine. Filled with humor and introspection, this conversation shines a new light on medieval literature and its contemporary relevance. Our discussion takes a closer look at Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Book of the Duchess," highlighting how Chaucer subtly addresses the plague's impact without explicitly mentioning it. Dr. Alcaro explains the use of terms like "wound" to reflect the collective suffering of the audience, drawing intriguing parallels to modern-day euphemisms and the language of trauma. We also explore the concept of a "history of omission," where what is left unsaid can be as revealing as what is recorded, and how language evolves in response to shared traumatic experiences. This episode offers a thought-provoking examination of how literary works navigate the complexities of human grief and communal memory. Rounding out the episode, we delve into the unexpected connections between medieval melancholia and modern-day humor, uncovering tales that resonate with contemporary comedic sensibilities. Dr. Alcaro reflects on the historical context of forced positivity during pandemics, drawing parallels to our recent experiences with COVID-19. We contemplate the long-term impacts of the pandemic on literature and society, pondering how themes of disease, isolation, and sensory perception might shape future works. Mary joined Alcoholics Anonymous 35 years ago, shortly after her father picked up his 20 year chip in the Program. Her father's longevity and experience in AA was reflected in his willingness to let his daughter find her own way through the alcoholic mire in which she was stuck for years. By the time she came into AA in 1988, she had become emotionally, physically, and spiritually wrecked. A cry for help was all she had left. That cry, however, was answered by none other than her father who took her to her earliest meetings. Mary's misery turned into a sincere willingness to get and stay sober. Over time, she got a sponsor, worked the steps, and began her service work as a sponsor. The various milestones in Mary's sobriety journey represent the very worst and very best things that can happen in the life of a recovering alcoholic. At the end of each milestone were the blessings of continuous sobriety and greater gifts of experience, strength, that she freely shares with others. I feel you'll find Mary's story to be an inspiring example of good long-term recovery in the AA. Her approach to sobriety is both enlightening and inspiring. So please enjoy the next hour with my friend and AA sister, Mary M. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. In this interview Mary M. McGlynn, Professor of English at Baruch College, CUNY, discusses her new book Broken Irelands: Literary Form in Post-Crash Irish Fiction (Syracuse University Press, 2022). While the national narrative coming out of Ireland since the 2008 economic crisis has been relentlessly sanguine, fiction has offered a more nuanced perspective from both well-established and emerging authors. In Broken Irelands, McGlynn examines Irish fiction of the post-crash era, addressing the proliferation of writing that downplays realistic and grammatical coherence. Noting that these traits have the effect of diminishing human agency, blurring questions of responsibility, and emphasizing emotion over rationality, McGlynn argues that they reflect and respond to social and economic conditions during the global economic crisis and its aftermath of recession, austerity, and precarity. Rather than focusing on overt discussions of the crash and recession, McGlynn explores how the dominance of an economic worldview, including a pervasive climate of financialized discourse, shapes the way stories are told. In the writing of such authors as Anne Enright, Colum McCann, Mike McCormack, and Lisa McInerney, McGlynn unpacks the ways that formal departures from realism through grammatical asymmetries like unconventional verb tenses, novel syntactic choices, and reliance on sentence fragments align with a cultural moment shaped by feelings of impotence and rhetorics of personal responsibility. Visions and Dreams Part 1 Show NotesSummary: Did you ever wonder how it is God spoke to the prophets and kings? In the majority of instances it was through dreams or visions. We take a closer look into the connection our dreams may have to the spiritual realm and examine whether our sleeping hours can involve communication from God.This Episode brought to you by: Our Premium Subscribers or “Seekers” Marcus B. Natassia W. Djuana F. Mary M. In this interview, she discusses her book, Race, Politics, and Irish America: A Gothic History (Oxford UP, 2023), which inserts successive Irish-American identities--forcibly transported Irish, Scots-Irish, and post-Famine Irish--into American histories and representations of race. Figures from the Scots-Irish Andrew Jackson to the Caribbean-Irish Rihanna, as well as literature, film, caricature, and beauty discourse, convey how the Irish racially transformed multiple times: in the slave-holding Caribbean, on America's frontiers and antebellum plantations, and along its eastern seaboard. This cultural history of race and centuries of Irishness in the Americas examines the forcibly transported Irish, the eighteenth-century Presbyterian Ulster-Scots, and post-1845 Famine immigrants. Their racial transformations are indicated by the designations they acquired in the Americas: 'Redlegs,' 'Scots-Irish,' and 'black Irish.' In literature by Fitzgerald, O'Neill, Mitchell, Glasgow, and Yerby (an African-American author of Scots-Irish heritage), the Irish are both colluders and victims within America's racial structure. Depictions range from Irish encounters with Native and African Americans to competition within America's immigrant hierarchy between 'Saxon' Scots-Irish and 'Celtic' Irish Catholic. Irish-connected presidents feature, but attention to queer and multiracial authors, public women, beauty professionals, and performers complicates the 'Irish whitening' narrative. Thus, 'Irish Princess' Grace Kelly's globally-broadcast ascent to royalty paves the way for 'America's royals,' the Kennedys. The presidencies of the Scots-Irish Jackson and Catholic-Irish Kennedy signalled their respective cohorts' assimilation. Since Gothic literature particularly expresses the complicity that attaining power ('whiteness') entails, subgenres named 'Scots-Irish Gothic' and 'Kennedy Gothic' are identified: in Gothic by Brown, Poe, James, Faulkner, and Welty, the violence of the colonial Irish motherland is visited upon marginalized Americans, including, sometimes, other Irish groupings. History is Gothic in Irish-American narrative because the undead Irish past replays within America's contexts of race. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Thank you Munk Members for the hundreds of suggestions for a new name for our weekly podcast exploring current events with Janice Stein and Rudyard Griffiths. And, we have a winner! Friday Focus is our new show title. Kudos to Mary M. who was the first to come up with this punchy new name. On this week's installment of Friday Focus, Janice and Rudyard explore how the War in Ukraine escalated this week, but not how many people expected. With Putin's decision to stop all natural gas shipments to Europe, what was up to now a kinetic conflict in Eastern Europe has become a continent-wide energy and financial war between Russia and the EU. How is this conflict likely to play out? What are its likely impacts on inflation, the global economy and Canada's national security? This podcast is a project of the Munk Debates, a Canadian charitable organization dedicated to fostering civil and substantive public dialogue. More information at www.munkdebates.com.

An inspiring conversation with the authors of the book "Full Ecology" about humans, animals, trees and even conciousness! The fullness of ecology is bringing together the wisdom about and in nature with the wisdom about and in humans The superpowers in nature which have evolved for millions of years, have also found their place in human beings because we are nature Nature is not something out there that we are going to save Can we nudge a perceptual shift in our perception of nature and of ourselves and move towards less separation between the two Can we move towards the truth of who we are, that we are as much nature as anything else, and can again occupy our right size in the world. Not as rulers and dominators, but as an integral part of nature and in respectful kinship with each other and nature We can't live with out the protection of the billions of natural microbes on our skins and inside our bodies, our melatonin levels are set by millions of years of interacting with the sun, and we can't live with out all these intricate settings from the natural world. How sensing Kinship with the land and bonding with our natural environment benefits us immensely in our wellbeing We explore what implications the agricultural revolution 10.000 years ago had on how humans view on nature, how they perhaps lost the notion of embeddednes in nature and the notion of reverence for the environment. Maybe our separation from nature started with the agricultural revolution This initial separation lead to the Cartesian notions of objectifying everything and divorcing every thing from every other thing Is our mind still evolving? Is there a quickening in the evolution of our consciousness happening at this time? Separation Diversity is the number one predictor of health and resiliency in nature In wolf packs, elephant herds or lion-herds, there will always be a great diversity of “personalities”. We have to stop believing that we are better than people of other nationality, culture or colour - that brings resiliency and wellbeing for all. How the wolfs were exterminated from Yellowstone national Park, and how the wholeness of that ecosystem was disrupted. And how the health of that ecosystem regenerated when the wolfs were introduced to Yellowstone again. How more and more people are questioning whether the small ego is always telling us the truth. Can we move towards the mind and the ego being in service of the heart instead of the other way around. The heart thrives in kinship and relationship, and life on earth is completely dependant on healthy relationships. Why we need to just STOP and not just act all the time. To really be in touch with ourselves and our environments To take a moment, and just listen to the peace, and from there start looking at what is actually going on here? How improvisation is critical for us to be of true service to whatever is arising moment by moment How it is much easier to just stop and be, when you are in nature, and from there we can then bring it into our normal lives, and see what happens. What does it look like to bring our beautiful experiences that we have in nature, into our daily day lives. From stopping we have the opportunity of getting a good sense of what actions are the most appropriate. How regenerative agriculture is surging around the world, and how it supports the diversity of the land. Acknowledging how life really works on this planet, is vital to be able to support regeneration. Do we really stop by the edge of our skins? Do I end where my skin ends? www.fullecology.com www.duritaholm.com

There is so much hope to be found in the story of Mary M. and Mary as they walked to the tomb where Jesus was buried and wondered how they would get to his body with the heavy stone in their way. All along our journeys there are situations that seem unmovable, yet time and time again we arrive to a, "stone rolled away." My hope for us this week is that we can find strength in the sacred space of solidarity, and in the invitation of the Risen Jesus to continue journeying even if you don't know how it will end. Listen until the end of the episode to hear my raw 5:20am reflections on Marks account of this story of the journey towards the stone rolled away and the invitation given to these women as the first to experience the Risen Jesus.
