In the left corner, we have Paul Merriman, the seasoned finance veteran weighing in at 183 pounds. In the right corner, Dr. Karsten Jeske, the scrappy newcomer at 208 pounds. The bell rings, and the small cap value debate begins. This episode features a financial boxing match between two investment heavyweights with dramatically different perspectives. Paul Merriman champions diversification through the efficient frontier, which means adding small cap value to your portfolio. Dr. Karsten Jeska has “thrown cold water” on this approach, favoring simpler strategies like “VTSAX and chill.”The stakes are high — we're talking potentially millions of dollars in your retirement account over decades.Merriman argues that history shows clear evidence for small cap value's premium. From 2000 to 2009, small cap value outperformed the S&P 500 in all but one year, compounding at 10 percent while the S&P 500 returned negative 1 percent. He believes this pattern will continue, creating a powerful diversification effect when combined with broader market indexes.Jeske counters that small cap value's outperformance is mostly “front-loaded” in history, happening before anyone knew about it. Since 2006, small cap value has underperformed. He argues that once an advantage becomes widely known, it disappears in an efficient market. Adding small cap value might even be “di-worsification” — increasing complexity without improving returns. The debate expands beyond small cap value to touch on:Active vs. passive investing strategiesMarket timing vs. buy-and-hold approachesSimplicity vs. complexity in portfolio constructionThe role of faith vs. evidence in investment decisionsWhile both experts disagree about small cap value's future, they agree on fundamentals: invest early, stay invested for the long term, and understand that no one can predict markets with certainty. What starts as a technical debate evolves into a philosophical discussion about evidence, probability, and the limits of our knowledge — all with millions of retirement dollars hanging in the balance.Timestamps:Note: Timestamps will vary on individual listening devices based on dynamic advertising run times. Karsten Jeske also known as “Big ERN” is the founder and genius behind Early Retirement Now. He writes on all topics related to personal finance but is best known for his comprehensive series on safe withdrawal strategies. In this episode he dives deep into the intricacies of safe withdrawal rates, sequence of return risk, the importance of market valuations for retirees and the 'one more year' syndrome often discussed in the Financial Independence community. Karsten also shares his personal journey from a modest upbringing in Germany to early retirement in the U.S.

One of the many fairy tales hegemonically attached to the world of work in capitalist economies is that all one need do is get a job and work hard, and those things will automatically lead to "the good life." But what, exactly, is the good life? Is it a universal term or does it mean different things to different people in different places? What are the narratives attached to the "good life" and what are the narratives that come into play when the fairy tale does not come true? Finally, what happens when employers and employees have different ideas about the role of work in worker's lives? In this brief, free-wheeling conversation, I discuss these questions and more with Dr. Christine Jeske, author of The Laziness Myth. Dr. Christine Jeske is an associate professor of anthropology at Wheaton College. Prior to coming to Wheaton, Christine worked in microfinance, refugee resettlement, community development, and teaching while living in Nicaragua, Northwest China, and South Africa. Christine is the author of three books and many articles for popular and academic audiences. Her most recent book, The Laziness Myth, considers what makes work desirable, how racism shapes work, and how people find hope in undesirable working conditions. https://econanthro.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/ChristineJeske.mp3 References: The Laziness Myth: Narratives of Work and the Good Life in South Africa by Christine Jeske Jeske, C. 2018.
Real estate is a relationship business, and we don't just mean in the buying and selling process, or lead generation. Building meaningful connections between real estate agents can make all the difference in your success in this industry. Surrounding yourself with others that are doing what you want to be doing, and are successful can be incredibly beneficial to your long term goals. This week's guest is Chad Jeske and he is the ultimate connector. Chad is the Owner and Publisher of REAL Producers Twin Cities. REAL Producers is a social network that features the top 5% of real estate agents in the Twin Cities to help them connect and socialize and they also release a monthly magazine publication featuring top producing agents. Chad is amazing at helping others connect, and make meaningful relationships. He is passionate about what he does. We are also so so excited to announce that our very own, Beth Petersen Randall, of The BPR Experience here in the Minneapolis area is currently featured in REAL Producers! This is a great conversation and we can't wait to share it with you. Let's dive in!
