Here are some problematic assumptions about the Great Commission which end up stifling motherhood (and stifling the mission too): Wrong Idea 1: We're all meant to be constantly expanding our range of relationships to tell the gospel to new people. Wrong Idea 2: Our children don't qualify as people to be discipled. Wrong Idea 3: The Great Commission is only about evangelism. Wrong Idea 4: Mission to our children is done the same way as mission to our unbelieving neighbour. Since Jesus is our Head and Lord of everything, since he has appointed us each to our own spheres and duties, we can trust that the limitations of his provisions will achieve his mission.

On this episode we go inside Ross Baird's journey to make 'Arguments with Integrity.'  As he shared, good ideas don't always win; but shared ideas will.  Hear how he intentionally used his venture firm and his book to build a community behind some powerful shared ideas he's convinced will change the world. Ross developed the Village Capital concept in 2009, and has led the development of programs worldwide.  He's the author of The Innovation Blind Spot: Why We Back the Wrong Ideas—and What to Do About It (includes forward by Steve Case). Before launching Village Capital, he worked with First Light Ventures, a seed fund focused on impact investments. Prior to First Light, Ross worked on the development of four education-related start-up ventures: the Indian School Finance Company in Hyderabad, India, the National College Advising Corps in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and two ventures using technology to promote civic participation. He has a MPhil from the University of Oxford, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and a BA from the University of Virginia, where he was a Truman Scholar and a Jefferson Scholar.

While it seems like the key to becoming a successful entrepreneur is having a great idea, you also have to have money. But If you’ve got a winning idea, getting financing should take care of itself, right? As you’ll find out during my conversation with Ross Baird, Founder and President of Village Capital, and author of the book “The Innovation Blindspot: Why We Back the Wrong Ideas and What to Do About It," it is not always that simple. In order to raise capital, you have to be able to connect with investors. And that means avoiding innovation blind spots that are common with venture capitalists. Ross Baird wants to help investors see the vast opportunities available outside of their typical, limited scope. In this episode, Ross sits down with me to discuss his new book and to share how he’s making a lasting impact by helping investors eliminate some of those innovation blind spots in their approach to Venture Capitalism. You don’t want to miss this conversation. How innovation blind spots create limited opportunities for entrepreneurs As I was talking with Ross, I found myself thinking back more than 10 years ago to when I founded the Max Borges Agency. I had some reservations about growing a consumer tech PR agency in Miami because our offices were not in Silicon Valley or New York City. Ross says that's a concern too many entrepreneurs face because of the innovation blind spots many investors have. "80 percent of venture capital goes to New York, California, and Massachusetts," he says.. "Professional investors have trained their minds to think good ideas only come out of a few locations and industries. We think in society that resources flow to their best and most productive uses.” As I discovered in our conversation, that is not always the case. Be sure to listen as Ross explains why this is a huge problem for entrepreneurship. Investing should be more like college sports recruiting Ross shared with me that he believes too many investors approach their jobs like stock pickers - they're only looking for the next sure thing based on historical trends. This type of innovation blind spot causes many investors to miss out on star entrepreneurs that could really make an impact. He thinks they should instead model their approaches after college basketball and football coaches."If you go to any neighborhood anywhere in the U.S., whether it's rural North Dakota or inner-city L.A., if there's are kids with the potential to be an athlete. That’s why by the time they are ten years old, college recruiters know their names. There's a multi-billion-dollar industrial recruiting complex to discover athletes. Investors need to spend the same amount of time investing in their pipelines," says Ross. Hear about this unique approach to investing and how Ross is applying it to his own business in this week’s episode. 3 qualities of successful entrepreneurs Ross and his colleagues are working to eliminate innovation blind spots and widen the narrow lens that professional investors use to identify entrepreneurs. He does not want location, education, or economic backgrounds to disqualify anyone with a great idea from pursuing his or her dreams. He shares with me three qualities common to most successful entrepreneurs that he recommends anyone thinking of starting a business should embrace. In this program, we will explore an interesting topic; we're talking about first impressions and how they're often wrong.V: So let's start with the term first impression, it's the idea or opinion that you have about someone after meeting them for only a short time.S: It's very natural to make a quick judgement about someone based on their appearance or facial expression. V: We're going to be hearing about results of the research that has been researching our impressions. The tests asked people to decide whether they thought faces were dominant, competent, trustworthy or extroverted.S: Let's just look at those words for a second. Dominant means being strongest or most important. Competent means being able to do things.V: While if you're trustworthy it means people trust you – you are worth their trust. And being extroverted means you are energetic and enjoy spending time with others.如果你是trustworthy，就说明人们相信你,你值得他们信任。而extroverted就是说你精力充沛，乐意与他人交往。S: So what did the research find out? Faces that look happy and feminine, like a woman - were rated as more trustworthy. While faces that were more masculine – like a man – were seen as more dominant.V:And wider faces with big eyes were seen as more extroverted.脸庞较宽且眼睛比较大的人被认为比较外向。S: Now the important thing in the research says that these judgements aren't accurate. Someone who looks competent isn't necessarily competent!V: So, what does this mean in practice? S: Trustworthiness, dominance and attractiveness are the three big things that we form impressions of people. But interestingly we have done some work predicting the electoral success of politicians, and the judgement that is most predictive of who is going to win the election is perceived competence. And this is not random at all, because if you ask voters what is the most important attribute of a politician, competence is the one on the top. V: OK, so this is actually quite significant. People say that the most important attribute – or quality – for a politician is competence – the ability to do things.S: That sounds fair enough. But because we make judgements based on appearance – this can actually affect how people vote.V: If voters believe or perceive someone to be competent – they're more likely to vote for him or her. This applies especially to people who are less educated about politics – they are more likely to be influenced by appearance.S: And this applies to around 25% of voters – so the number of people who go with their gut is large enough to influence the outcomes of elections!V: Well, to go with your gut. That means to make a decision which isn't based on rational thought – it's based on instinct, on a feeling, on your gut.S: Yes – your gut is your stomach and the organs in your belly. So, can we tell nothing from a person's face?V: Faces carry useful information about things like a person's mental state, and whether they're tired or sick.
