In our final episode of 2024, host Chris Williams and guest co-host, Under the Surface Executive Producer and CCG Vice President, Alain Deschênes have a long overdue chat with computational drug discovery rock star Rebecca Swett. Rebecca shares her journey from her academic beginnings to her current role at X-Chem, via roles at Novartis, Vertex, and Relay. Rebecca's wide-ranging experience shines through as the conversation wends its way through cutting-edge computational chemistry covering machine learning, molecular dynamics, and DNA-encoded libraries. At the scale Rebecca works at, automation is key, so this topic comes up too. We're not going to lie; it's a lot. And, of course, there's more … Rebecca highlights the significance of allyship and representation for women in science, and the role of community (with a shout-out to the long-running BAGIM modeling forum). Also, in the inaugural asking of the ‘Deschênes Dilemma,' we find out what Rebecca would be doing if she wasn't doing all of the above …
With The Picture Not Taken: On Life and Photography (NYRB), Benjamin Swett brings us a subtly beautiful series of essays that explore memory and identity and what we really see in the viewfinder. We talk about the role of photography in his life, how Musil, Sebald, and Knausgaard and taught him to trust digressions, the freedom to be found in the essay, how working in the NYC Parks Dept. led him into some strange career choices, and the challenge (& reward) of photographing trees. We get into our respective rebellions against our fathers and linearity, the loss of his daughter and how her shadow looms over the book, his idea for a negative-autobiography and my own photo-text project, how his family felt about being included in the essays, and the moment he felt comfortable moving from film to digital. We also discuss his 9/11 and what it revealed to him about himself, how the constraint of Instagram captions can lead to good storytelling, the ~30-year gap he took to finish his MFA, the benefits of leaning in to awkwardness and self-revelation, and a lot more. Katrina also shares her thoughts on the depressing state of human rights in the world today, giving special attention to what's transpiring in China, Russia, and Gaza. She ends the episode with timely and sage advice on navigating uncertainty: Figure out what's important to you and then do the work needed to live your life accordingly.linktr.ee/mansharamanimansharamani.substack.com
IWP Ep35 The Alhambra Valley 1850-1915 - Experimentation, Education, Conservation - Strentzel, Swett and Muir. This episode is about family and Friends in a small valley in the golden age of Pomology. They all are named John somewhat confusingly and all are referred to as the “Father” of something, John Swett's son Frank is also a large part of the episode. Although Strentzel and Muir aren't best known as winemakers, Strentzel was trained in it and did make wine and his agricultural work was ahead of its time and still informs what is happening today. Muir is our connecting point between the 2 families. When we get to the Swetts, - viticulture and winemaking will be the focus and they were well respected and known. Their work informs us today as well, especially if you grew up in California. In this program, we compare dreaming and improvisation focusing on creative synergies, experiential similarities, and the underlying neurophysiology. These states of mind are mutually illuminating. That is, learning about one provides insights into the other. A key insight here is that we can deepen our understanding of improvisation by exploring other states of mind that have overlapping experiential qualities or brain states. In his book Dreams of Awakening, Charlie Morley writes that “…there are many different ways to tell the difference between [different states of experience], but the easiest way to get to grips with these differences is to spend as much time as we can in these states.” I propose that this is the case for improvisation, as well. By paying more attention to our dreaming experiences, we may deepen our knowledge of the experience of improvisation. Following the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, formally abolishing slavery, John Swett Rock, an abolitionist lawyer, achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first African-American to be admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court on February 1, 1865. Born free on October 13, 1825, in Salem, New Jersey, Rock was not only a lawyer but also an educator and a dentist. He graduated from the American Medical College in Philadelphia in 1852 and established a dental practice in Boston, where he tended to escaped slaves seeking refuge through the Underground Railroad. His tenure at the U.S. Supreme Court lasted only one year as health issues interrupted his career. At the age of 41, in 1866, Rock died due to tuberculosis. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we talk about the improbable and absurd New Defender 6x6 model as spotted in the Dupont Registry (link below), and the guys discuss everything right (not much) and wrong (pretty much everything) about it. Then we're talking about Land Rover Defender thefts skyrocketing, and the guys share their not so serious thoughts on this serious issue plaguing these cars. Steve mentions he's in the market for a Range Rover L322, and why a higher mileage car might suit him better than a lower mileage one. Steve mentions the XKE Jay Leno found in a garage in Burbank and how that came to be. Then we dive into our interview with 1995 Camel Trophy US Team of Jim Swett and Daphne Greene, who give us some insight into the selection process and how they came to be teammates back in 1995. What led them to Camel Trophy in the first place, and what made them great teammates then and now? Don't try to put Sarah Swett in a box—if you do, she might just weave a bag on it. (https://handwovenmagazine.com/inspiration-everywhere-handspun-yarn-tapestry-weaving/) Growing up on the East Coast, Sarah found herself more enchanted with knitting sweaters from farm yarn than the traditional college track. She spent her young adulthood as a ranch hand and cook in Montana and Idaho, where she brought her yarn in by pack mule. She fell in love with the Palouse region of western Idaho for its rolling hills and agricultural bounty, settled there, and began to explore the possibilities of home. She is as inspired by the sweeping landscape as by the tiny discoveries of making cordage from milkweed and dandelion she finds in her garden. When Melanie Falick featured Sarah in her 1996 book Knitting in America, she was equally enchanted with knitting, spinning, and weaving; she also pursues stitching and dyeing. Aside from a few years when injury kept her from knitting, it has been a constant companion, and she handspins nearly all of the yarn she uses for both knitting and weaving. But Sarah's most important craft is fiber play: weaving grocery lists into monumental tapestries, weaving iris-leaf cordage into tiny fringeless tapestry book covers, creating balanced plain-weave strips on backstrap looms, and sketching comics of a squirrel and crow weaving those bags around cardboard boxes. Sarah's tapestries have appeared in dozens of exhibitions, but she prefers not to stray far from home herself. Her Substack newsletter gives readers a weekly peek into her intriguing imagined and real worlds. What she most hopes to share, though, is not her playful approach to her life and art, but permission for others to explore their own. "I would like everyone to be enchanted by their life," she says, "and I would like them to be enchanted by what they're enchanted by—not what I'm enchanted by." It hardly seems possible not to be enchanted by Sarah's work, even if it ultimately inspires us just to get out and play. Visit the Long Thread Podcast website (https://longthreadmedia.com/podcast). Sometimes, hidden gems remain hidden for a reason. Those in-the-know may jealously limit access to outsiders; other times, it's simply because surprises can blossom in the most unexpected places. When it comes to craft beer, our hidden gems tend to be places like old-school beer bars or hyper-local destinations that remain off the radar of tourists. But occasionally, entire subcultures have been built in the most unlikely of places—and that's what we decided to spotlight in our newest series, Gas Station Week. Gas Station Week is a celebration of the unconventional and a look into the roadside stands, convenience stores, and yes, gas stations that have influenced entire communities of beer lovers across the country. Kicking off our Gas Station Week series is the story that inspired it all. In his piece titled “The Gas Station That Changed Everything — Swett's Tire & Auto in Bangor, Maine,” writer Nic Stevens describes how 30 years ago, craft beer wasn't just a novelty in Central Maine. It was nonexistent—that is, until one discerning entrepreneur saw its potential. Eventually, the beer shelves at Swett's Tire & Auto, a gas station strategically located on the Interstate 95 corridor, directly spawned a brewery, a beer bar, and helped develop a tight-knit homebrew scene and number of independent breweries, all with deep ties to the local community. Nic stumbled across the story, literally. In today's conversation, he describes his unorthodox approach to uncovering stories such as this by hopping on public transportation and relying on the kindness of strangers to take him in as he explores the United States in search of the next great hidden gem. Since folks in Maine aren't typically known for embracing outsiders—that is, anyone from outside of Maine—Nic says telling this particular tale wouldn't have been possible through conventional journalistic methods. We'll discuss his approach, as well as his discoveries that didn't make it into the final draft and why he thinks this story couldn't have happened anywhere else.

I sit down with Katrina Lantos Swett, president of the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice and co-chair of the recently concluded International Religious Freedom Summit. We discuss her fight for human rights and religious freedom, including raising awareness about the Chinese regime's practice of forcibly harvesting the organs of Falun Gong practitioners and other prisoners of conscience. And we discuss the legacy of Swett's late father, Congressman Tom Lantos, a survivor of the Holocaust, and what inspires her to continue her work.“My father had escaped from a slave labor camp. He was able to make his way back to Budapest and he found refuge in one of the safe houses that Raoul Wallenberg had set up … One of the things that [Raoul] Wallenberg did was he rented a number of buildings around Budapest, hung the Swedish flag there, basically said these are now part of the Swedish legation, and they are off-limits to the Nazis and to the Hungarian Arrow Cross,” she says. Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat, started issuing “protective passports” and inspired other members of the diplomatic corps in Hungary to do the same.“My mother would tell us: we called Wallenberg our Moses from the North, who had come to save us and lead us to the promised land. And so from a young age, both my sister and myself, we knew the stories of danger and of terror, but [also] that someone had come to help.”Follow American Thought Leaders on social media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmThoughtLeaderTruth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@AmThoughtLeaderGettr: https://gettr.com/user/amthoughtleaderFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmericanThoughtLeadersGab: https://gab.com/AmThoughtLeaderTelegram: https://t.me/AmThoughtLeader

Hello solvers, Welcome to The Solvers Edge Podcast, the podcast that takes you on a journey of why, how, and when does open innovation matter. I'm your host, Iliriana Kacaniku and today I am excited to talk to Keaton Swett, the co-founder of MindSumo, an open innovation management platform. Keaton is both an innovator and an enabler. He challenged himself with solving a big problem – showcasing student talent beyond resumes so employers recognize and hire them for demonstrated skills and value. He solved this two-sided problem by co-founding MindSumo, the crowdsourcing innovation management platform for Millennials and Gen X problem solvers. Since then, the platform community has grown to over 800,000 solvers from top universities around the world and has hosted over 3,000 challenges for over 100 of Fortune 500 companies. During the conversation, Keaton reminds us that: Open innovation is not a one-time Band-Aid solution to your problems. Open innovation yields best results when applied as a repeatable process within the organization. Open innovation is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on what your company needs are, customize each challenge in order to source the right innovative solutions to the problem. Open innovation challenges will match you with talent that may never come under your radar. By centering the challenges on the problem you aim to solve, you convert them into a marketplace of potential employment, for both you as an employer and solvers as potential employees, whom conventional recruitment channels may never reach. And so, if you're a student: Consider solving problems posed via open innovation challenges to demonstrate to your potential employers what you can solve and the value you bring to the table for them. What about you? What learnings did you take from this conversation? Feel free to share them with us at thesolversedge@kaptivategroup.com. We would love to hear from you. In the interim, follow us on Spotify, or Apple Podcast, or Google Podcast and subscribe to our newsletter so you do not miss out on our next episodes.
Congressman Dick Swett:: Civility, Vision, and Honor Matter In an era where civility is a rare commodity, recalling the way that Dick Swett conducted himself as a US Congressman and later as an Ambassador to Denmark is a reminder that civility, humility and conscience are still honorable and - perhaps even possible again. Dick was elected to the second congressional district seat in congress in 1990 and in 92 he was handily re-elected for another term. The turning point of Dick's political fortunes came in 1994 with the successful passage of the assault weapons ban. Despite the danger to his own career, Dick voted for the measure and it became law. He lost his reelection bid by less than a percentage point. FOLLOWING ON THE HEELS of the ban, there was a decline in gun violence but when the ban was not extended under George W. Bush we reverted to the status quo ante and we all know what that has looked like for our country. In 1998 he was named Ambassador to Denmark by President Bill Clinton a post he held until 2001. In this podcast I speak with Dick Swett about his political journey and his life journey since his act of courage led to the passage of the (temporary) assault weapons ban in 1994 and his razor close loss, fueled by the NRA, in the subsequent election.

Is singleness a gift or a curse? If you're single because you never married, divorced or widowed - are you just in a waiting room, marking time until you meet the right person, or is singleness a place filled with opportunities you would not have if married? Is it wrong to pray for a spouse? How do you respond when well-meaning friends say hurtful things like, “I don't understand why some guy hasn't snatched up you – you're so nice.” Sharon Betters and Jenilyn Swett, Director of Adult Ministries at Restoration Community Church (PCA) in St. Louis and author of Singleness, Living Faithfully, talk about the answers to these questions and much more in this Help & Hope podcast.

Here are the lyrics: Just because I asked a friend about the article Just because I donated money somewhere Just because I rang the number of the stated clerk They think I still care Just because I hate By Faith articles Where the progressives linger everywhere Just because I'm not the brooding guy I used to be They think I still care But if they're happy thinking I'll blog and post a little less Then let that silly notion bring them cheer But how could they ever be so foolish Oh where would they get such an idea Just because I blogged about them Just because I held that conference somewhere Just because I offered imprecatory prayers They still think I care
