Your Stupid Minds brings you Disney's first foray into films based on their amusement park rides. It's 1997's made-for-TV movie Tower of Terror, starring Steve Guttenberg, Nia Peeples, and Kirsten Dunst. Buzzy Crocker (Guttenberg) is a former journalist drummed out of the journalism game for being a bad journalist. Now he's fabricating photos for his supernatural tabloid stories with his teenage niece Anna (Dunst). When an old woman (Amzie Strickland) comes to him with the real story of the Hollywood Hotel elevator disappearance in 1939, he goes to the abandoned hotel to investigate. He eventually finds that everyone in the elevator is still around, in spook form, and can't cross over to the other plane. With the help of Anna he works to try to free them.

When it comes to having an interest in the subject of UFOs, there are those who enjoy it casually, those study it more deeply, and those who become active as investigator/researchers. As for the latter type, some, such as Max B. Miller, start young. Miller was the president of the Junior Flying Saucer League at age 15 in 1952, and in 1953, was the editor of Saucers, a magazine he and his group, Flying Saucers International, put out until 1960. In 1953, Miller came up with the idea to organize a convention and FSI organized what was billed as “The World's First Flying Saucer Convention.” It was held at the Hollywood Hotel from August 16–18, 1953, and was moderated by FSI member Jeron King Criswell, whom some readers may know as the narrator for Ed Wood's masterpiece, Plan 9 From Outer Space. Another precocious UFOlogist, Hayden Hewes, started the International UFO Bureau in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 13 in 1957. Hewes may not be as well known as Miller is to some readers, but he and his group were involved in some cases that should be.Read more →

This year we're kicking things off with the House of Mouse's first attempt at turning a ride into a movie with TOWER OF TERROR. A story about a child murder plot (in that a child was both the victim and the murderer) anchored by a barely-there Steve Guttenberg and a very present Kristen Dunst, all set in a spooky Hollywood Hotel which for some reason was allowed to remain abandoned for sixty years rather than bought up and redeveloped. And that's just the beginning of this strange tale!

Another Kind of Distance: A Spider-Man, Time Travel, Twin Peaks, Film, Grant Morrison and Nostalgia Podcast

Ronald Reagan in a Busby Berkeley extravaganza!!?? Well, sort of... The Gipper graduates from Warners' B-squad to the big time, but only to the tune of a 30 second two-shot with the great Dick Powell (67% of our hosts disagree with that description of Dick). And it's not exactly Berkeley's finest effort, either. Nothing proto-psychedelic here. Unless Mabel Todd's dotty dialogue disorients you.  And - to quote Mabel - we had some interesting talks! Topics include some notes on Johnny Mercer; the sad demise of erstwhile Stooge Majordomo Ted Healy; the return of Clinton Rosemond and Allyn Joslyn; the mystery that is Hugh Herbert; a despicable blackface gag that tells you everything you need to know about the banality of white supremacist evil during the 1930s; counterfeit fashion plate Alan Mowbray; Louella Parsons; some excuses for Dave to talk about the Lane Sisters (Rosemary and Lola are actually in the film); Glenda Farrell, professional wiseacre; Frances Langford; Johnnie "Scat" Davis; the Second New Deal; Court Packing; some more quality time with Norbert "I LOVE ACTRESSES" Lusk; and even a bona fide cultural leap forward in the persons of the Benny Goodman Quartet (BG, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and Teddy Wilson, the "Marxist Mozart") - the first integrated group of musicians ever to appear upon an American screen.   Toward the end, Dave, Romy, and Gareth discuss their dismal expectations re: the then-imminent Ontario provincial election (the episode was recorded in May). Suffice it to say, those expectations have been lived down to by Doug Ford, who is even less "refreshing" than Ted Healy.  Now is a time for choosing. Choose RED TIME FOR BONZO! In this solo episode recorded in her luxurious studio apartment, Heather is frustrated with the state of the world. In a day and age filled with struggle, controversy, and tension, Heather discusses problems with the film "Three Billboards," her predictions for the Oscar winners of 2018, her top ten films of the last year, the Aziz Ansari piece on Babe.net, whatever that is, a certain anti-feminist writer who just woke up from a deep freeze, a sexual fantasy involving John Mayer that will probably happen in Heather's lifetime, a BS op-ed appearing in the New York Times, and the problem with binary thinking, as supported by a peer-reviewed journal article. Between Light and Shadow: A Twilight Zone Podcast

This week, host Craig digs up the dirt Hollywood Confidential-style on two booze-soaked Twilight Zone classics, “The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine” and “A World of Difference,” episodes featuring real-life spouses Ida Lupino and Howard Duff. Keep an ear out for an earnest exploration of the historical significance of the pinky ring, not to mention the thrilling return of Dr. Reba Wissner. And speaking of spouses, Teresa pipes in with her usual wifely crunchiness. There’s a pretty heavy film noir vibe going on up in here, so tread lightly and trust no one. https://www.equinoxpub.com/home/journals/journal-of-film-music/ https://www.amazon.com/Partners-suspense-Critical-Herrmann-Hitchcock/dp/0719095867 Opening theme: “Neither Here nor There” by Twin Loops Closing music: “Hooray for Hollywood” by Benny Goodman and His Orchestra (from the film Hollywood Hotel, copyright 1937 by Warner Bros.) “Smokey Sax” by Hollywood Trailer Music Orchestra (from the album Film Noir: Vintage Cinema Classics, copyright 2015 by Megatrax Music)  “Le Freak” by Chic (from the album C’est Chic, copyright 1978 by Atlantic Recording Corporation)   Between Light and a Shadow: A Twilight Zone Podcast is a nonprofit podcast. Interviews - Rick Geary

The Comics Alternative

The Comics Alternative is excited to have Rick Geary back on the show. The guys had last talked to him two years ago, after the publication of A Treasury of Victorian Murder Compendium, Vol. 1, and now Rick is returning to the podcast to discuss his brand new book, Louise Brooks: Detective (NBM). Although similar in tone to his historical murder mysteries, this is a very different kind of narrative for Rick. Here he uses the biography of silent film star, Louise Brooks, as a springboard for a fictional tale set in Depression-era Kansas (a setting with familial roots for Rick). After her heyday as a silent movie star, the toast of both America and Europe society, and a divorcée from two unsuccessful marriages, a still-young Louise returns to her family home of Wichita to regroup and assess her life. There, she attempts to readjust to small-town living, tries her hand at becoming a writer, and eventually becomes embroiled in an elaborate and seemingly indecipherable mystery involving a once-famous playwright. Andy and Derek tell Rick that this is one of the most tightly wrought narratives they've read this year, with the kind of pacing and art that define his best Treasury pieces. They even ask him if this is the beginning of a new series of tales, one where Brooks becomes a sleuth in the mold of Miss Marple or Nancy Drew. (There are no plans yet, but the very end of the Louise Brooks:Detective definitely leaves that door open.) The guys also talk with Rick about his other projects, including his previous book, Madison Square Tragedy: The Murder of Stanford White, his adaptation of classic works of literature for both Eureka Productions' Graphic Classics and Seven Stories Press' Graphic Canon series, his fascination of architecture and period dress, and his plans for future historical murder mysteries. Rick tells the guys about a few of his upcoming projects, including a new work based on the 1947 Black Dahlia case and his soon-to-be-launched Kickstarter campaign, "Murder at the Hollywood Hotel." Unfortunately, the guys didn't have the time to ask Rick about everything they wanted to discuss with him -- e.g., his upcoming appearance at the SDCC and his work on last year's A is for Antichrist: Obama's Conspiracy Alphabet -- but there is nonetheless a lot packed into this interview. It is a fun and informative conversation, and the guys look forward to the time that they can have Rick back on the show for a third interview.
