There is an entire chapter of Indian music history that has shaped global music in unknown ways remains preserved only in the human memory of a select few.  Sandhya Sanjana is one of those humans. Long before "world music" became a marketing category, she was part of a generation of home-grown South-Asian artists blurring the edges of jazz, global and Indian classical music by a trial and error met with genuine curiosity, rather than novelty.  Co-founder one of India's earliest internationally touring world-fusion ensembles, Sanjana has been more than thirty albums, and spent decades moving between radically different musical worlds without reducing either of them into aesthetic decoration. In this conversation, we try to trace that arc. From an upbringing between Bombay and Delhi, to the nightclub circuits of Calcutta, with first-generation Indian Jazz musicians. From backstage blessings from Alice Coltrane after the exchange of a cassette tape, to the origins of India's first international festival ‘Jazz Yatra' where the appearances from the likes of icons such Art Blakey, Max Roach, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard and John Handy and their days in India in open exchange with local musicians threaten to fade away amidst undocumented history. What emerges is not nostalgia, but a portrait of a generation of artists that worked without the visibility, institutional support, or mythology later scenes would inherit.  Artists building language in real time. Documenting culture through performance while remaining largely undocumented themselves. In the words of Sandhya herself, much of that era was "not presented to the world."  This conversation tries to remember.    Listen to the second half of the episode.   Connect with Sandhya: https://instagram.com/achhamusica https://facebook.com/sandhyasanjana https://youtube.com/@achha_musica   Connect with T.L. As You Wish Talk Radio with James Gilliland Anunnaki Tablets, A Lost History, Atlantis Lemuria and Mu, Real Disclosure Ancient Tablets, Lost Civilizations, and the Choice Between Collapse and Ascension Anunnaki Tablets and a Different Earth History In this episode of As You Wish Talk Radio, host James Gilliland discusses newly surfaced ancient tablets that he says challenge conventional accounts of Earth's history. He presents the Anunnaki as refugees who came to Earth after wars connected to Lyra, establishing colonies and using advanced knowledge to build cities, temples, canals, and underground facilities. He describes the Igigi workers, their rebellion, and the creation or genetic upgrading of early humans known as the Lulu to take over labor duties. Gilliland frames this history as more complex than mainstream accounts, emphasizing that different beings, colonies, and off-world influences contributed to humanity's development. Cycles of Cataclysm and Ancient Civilizations Gilliland then connects the tablets to recurring cycles of flood, fire, darkness, drought, plague, abundance, and collapse. He describes an Anu cycle of roughly 26,000 years and says past civilizations experienced great floods, fire from the sky, earthquakes, poisoned land, and abandoned cities. The episode also moves into Atlantis, Lemuria, Mu, India, China, vitrified stone, submerged ruins, frozen civilizations under ice, pole shifts, rising and sinking continents, and catastrophic Earth changes. His central point is that human history is far older and more advanced than commonly accepted timelines allow. Pleiadians, Universal Law, and Humanity's Choice A major theme of the episode is the choice between repeating past destructive patterns or aligning with universal law. Gilliland contrasts Atlantean misuse of technology, domination, surveillance, and warfare with Lemurian and Mu traditions of spiritual harmony and living according to the Law of One. He says Pleiadian, Andromedan, Arcturian, Sirian, Orion, and other benevolent councils are involved in Earth's future, but operate under non-interference unless invited. He argues that humanity must choose between social, economic, and environmental collapse or an upward spiral of peace, brotherhood, individual freedom, prosperity, and spiritual evolution. Yeshua Scrolls, Inner Divinity, and the Feminine The episode shifts into what Gilliland calls the Yeshua scrolls, which he says are controversial writings connected to Templar preservation and attributed to Yeshua ben Joseph. He highlights teachings that place the power of God within each person rather than in external religious authority. Gilliland discusses the Ethiopian Bible, the Council of Nicaea, Asherah, Eve, Arcturus, Mary, and the idea of a joint male-female spiritual teaching. He interprets these materials as supporting inner God connection, the equality of women, and the rejection of fear-based religious control. Warnings About Deception, UFO Culture, and False Narratives Gilliland also warns listeners about deception in spiritual, religious, UFO, and disclosure communities. He criticizes gossip, jealousy, character assassination, fame-seeking, manipulation, and what he describes as false teachings or controlled opposition. He says people should not attack others over beliefs and should focus on their own healing, enlightenment, and personal relationship with Creator. He also warns against a fake alien invasion narrative, saying benevolent councils would not allow it, and advises listeners to approach contact experiences with prayer, protection, sacred space, discernment, and the intention to connect only with benevolent off-world beings. Personal Contact, Planetary Ascension, and Returning to Nature The final portion emphasizes making one's own personal connection with Creator, discovering one's unique purpose, and rising with the planetary ascension process. Gilliland says Earth is going through intense changes involving the sun, volcanoes, earthquakes, continents, and timelines, and that humanity no longer has the luxury of remaining caught in conflict, deception, or spiritual immaturity. He urges listeners to move beyond old sacrificial-god programming, reconnect with nature, and focus on innocence, children, animals, gardens, and trees. The episode ends with descriptions of filmed lights, ships, “power ups,” and activity around the ranch, reinforcing Gilliland's larger message that off-world contact and Earth changes are already underway.

In the U.S., illiberalism is in power. I don't think anybody really argues against that. But I've been surprised by how weak liberalism has felt in response. Donald Trump isn't a popular president; he isn't making people want more of what he is. But if the forces of illiberalism are really going to be turned back in this country, I think more people need to be excited and inspired by liberalism itself. We need a liberalism that stands for more than “not Trump.” So I've been on my own esoteric journey, reading a lot of books on the history of liberalism, trying to understand what excited and inspired people in the past, and how liberals overcame crises like the one we're in. And reading one of those books, “The Lost History of Liberalism” by Helena Rosenblatt, it felt like an epiphany — that this was a piece of the puzzle. So I wanted to have Rosenblatt on the show to talk about it. Rosenblatt is a professor of history, political science and French at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and in this conversation, she walks me through the history of liberalism that she uncovered, and the values that once lived at its heart. Did Early Temple Sealings Guarantee Heaven? (Jonathan Stapley 2018 interview)

Did Early Temple Sealings Guarantee Heaven? Dr. Jonathan Stapley, an award-winning historian—and surprisingly, a PhD in carbohydrate chemistry  discusses his Mormon History Association Best Book Award-winner, “The Power of Godliness: Mormon Liturgy and Cosmology.” This is a fascinating deep dive into how early Latter-day Saints understood priesthood, the lost history of female ritual healing, and how the church’s ordinances have evolved over time. https://youtu.be/_tNWj8gupM0 0:00 Cosmological Priesthood 17:29 Mormon Women healing 31:36 Mormon Priestess 44:24 Dallin Oak: Women Have Priesthood! 53:21 Alternative Medicine 1:01:52 Baby Blessings 1:13:21 Temple Sealings 1:22:15 Armininianism vs Calvinism: Are Mormons Saved? Stapley, a scientist by trade and a historian by passion, discusses his 2018 award-winning book, The Power of Godliness: A Mormon Liturgy and Cosmology. While Latter-day Saints rarely use the term “liturgy,” Stapley argues it is a tremendously powerful concept for framing the worship, rituals, and ordinances that construct the Mormon universe. Redefining the Priesthood: Ecclesiastical vs. Cosmological To make sense of historical shifts, Stapley introduces a vital framework that splits early Mormon priesthood into two distinct categories: Ecclesiastical Priesthood: This represents the offices of the church (deacons, teachers, priests, elders, bishops, etc.). Cosmological Priesthood: Developed in the Nauvoo Temple, this encompasses the “heaven on earth” structure where men and women act as kings, queens, priests, and priestesses. While early church members viewed these liturgical structures as ways to channel the power of God, by the 20th century, standard church catechisms shifted to simply defining the priesthood as the literal power of God. Forgotten Era of Female Ritual Healing One of the most inspiring (and historically misunderstood) topics in the book is female ritual healing. In the 1800s, women were recognized healers who routinely performed anointings and blessed the sick. Joseph Smith explicitly stated this was entirely appropriate and a manifestation of God’s power. Stapley warns against the trap of “presentism”—the mistake of looking at history through the lens of modern definitions. Today, healing is classified as a priesthood ordinance, leading some to falsely assume that early women held ecclesiastical priesthood offices. Interestingly, the modern narrative shifted in a subtle but revolutionary 2014 General Conference sermon by Elder Dallin H. Oaks. Elder Oaks redefined the conversation by stating that because there is only one power of God, women who participate in the work of the church are wielding the authority of the priesthood in their callings, a massive linguistic and theological shift from previous decades. Lost Temple Rituals: Baptisms for Health and Temple Healers Modern LDS temple practices are highly streamlined, but they used to be vastly more diverse. Joseph Smith originally envisioned the temple as a place for literal physical healing. Baptisms for Health: By the 1880s, baptisms for health were the single most common living ritual performed in temples. If you were feeling sick, you could make a pilgrimage to the temple to be baptized for your health. Temple Healers: Pioneer temples featured dedicated temple healers. For example, Lucy Bigelow Young (one of Brigham Young’s wives) received the sick—sometimes brought in on beds—and healed them inside the St. George Temple. These practices were ultimately discontinued in the 1920s under President Heber J. Grant, who reformed and shortened the liturgy to focus exclusively on salvific rituals. From “Cunning Folk” to Alternative Medicine Addressing the controversial topic of early Mormon “magic,” Stapley prefers the historical European term “cunning folk traditions.“ Cunning folk were local seers who found lost items, healed the sick, and battled witches. As belief in witches faded during the Enlightenment, cunning folk transitioned into botanical and herbal healers. Because Mormonism embraces an “open heaven” and the miraculous, early Saints were receptive to both priesthood blessings and these alternative cures. Stapley notes that this cultural DNA persists today; the modern LDS openness to complementary and alternative medicine (like energy healing or essential oils) functions similarly to the cunning folk traditions of the past. Evolution of Baby Blessings Unlike baptism, the baby blessing is not found in the Book of Mormon. In the early church, blessings often occurred on the 8th day after birth, evocative of the Old Testament tradition of circumcision. In early Mormon Missouri (Zion), the blessing was deeply communal: babies received the blessing so their names could be inscribed in the “book of remembrance” to secure a community inheritance. By the 20th century, the ritual’s focus became intensely entangled with fatherhood. In an effort to make fathers feel the power of their duty, modern church policy even evolved to allow fathers without temple recommends to stand in the blessing circle, hoping the experience might quicken them to repentance. Sealings Guarantee Heaven? Debate on “Perseverance” How permanent is a temple sealing? In early Mormonism, theology leaned heavily into “perseverance,” a concept akin to Calvinism, suggesting that once a family is sealed, they are permanently locked into the “network of heaven”. Early Saints believed that even if a child or spouse backslid into sin, their place in heaven remained, though they might have to suffer for their sins before being redeemed. However, faced with the reality of profound human wickedness (such as the actions of John D. Lee, Brigham Young’s adopted son who participated in a mass murder), church leaders realized a free pass to heaven couldn’t exist. Today, LDS teachings lean far closer to Arminianism and Protestant ideals, viewing the celestial kingdom as a conditional reward based on individual faithfulness rather than an unbreakable guarantee. Dr. Stapley’s framework ultimately allows believers and historians alike to explore Mormonism’s rich, dynamic past on its own terms, free from the constraints of present-day politics. Back in 2020, I became fascinated with the story of the relationship between Jack Daniel and Nathan "Uncle Nearest" Green. I read Jack Daniel's Legacy by Ben A. Green (1967) and interviewed Jack Daniel's Historian Nelson Eddy and Uncle Nearest's Founder Fawn Weaver and then weaved the common tale surrounding these two Tennessee whiskey legends in Season 3 of Whiskey Lore. Then, in 2023, I began digging through archives in Georgia and Tennessee for my book The Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey and to my surprise, a very different picture of Jack and Nearest began to evolve.  In an effort to clean up some of my episodes that fell victim to marketing lore and oral tradition, it is time to reexamine the story of Jack and Nearest, to build a framework based on real documented history. The Valley Today
Three Concrete Steps: The Search for Wolf Gap CCC's Lost History

The Valley Today

When host Janet Michael talks with Rosemary Wallinger and Laura Fogle for this episode of The Valley Today, she expected a straightforward conversation about local history. What unfolded instead was a remarkable story of discovery, perseverance, and the fight to preserve a crucial piece of American—and African American—heritage that has been hiding in plain sight for nearly 90 years. A Tale of Two Camps Rosemary, president of the CCC Legacy organization, and Laura, the vice president, share how Shenandoah County is home to two historically significant Civilian Conservation Corps camps. While Camp Roosevelt is well-known as the nation's first CCC camp, Wolf Gap - located just 22 miles away - has remained virtually unknown. "Nobody here that we've talked to, other than maybe three people, had ever heard of it," Rosemary reveals. "So we are giving concentrated effort to get it into public awareness." Both camps were among the first ten CCC camps established in the nation. But there's a crucial difference: Wolf Gap became one of the very first African American CCC camps in the country, opening just one month after Camp Roosevelt in 1933. Roosevelt's New Deal in Action As the women explain, the CCC was born from desperation. When Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933, 15 million Americans were unemployed. People were starving. The CCC became one of his fastest-activated New Deal programs, up and running within weeks of his inauguration. The scale was staggering: over 3 million men employed across 4,500 camps nationwide, including 250,000 African Americans and 80,000 Native Americans. Young men—officially aged 17 to 25, though many lied about their age to enroll as young as 15—earned $30 a month. Twenty-five dollars went directly home to their families; they kept just $5 for themselves. "It was another great stimulus program for the whole country," Laura explains. "The guys that were working got to keep $5 a month and their families got the other 25 back home to spend on groceries and needs. The communities around the CCC camps profited because they supplied the food. The farmers had work, the mercantiles had work, the lumber yards had work." The average enrollee gained 35 pounds during their service—a stark testament to the poverty they'd escaped. They learned carpentry, metalworking, and conservation skills. Those who couldn't read or write were taught in camp classes. The Accomplishments History Forgot During the conversation, Rosemary rattles off Wolf Gap's impressive achievements: 16,000 acres of trees planted, 45 miles of road built, 60 miles of horse trails, 100 miles of telephone line, 50 miles of roadside naturalization, and three miles of stream improvement. The camp protected 100,000 acres of local forest, fought a three-day fire at Cedar Creek in 1935, and rescued more than 1,200 residents from floodwaters in March 1936. "Their accomplishments were just astonishing," Rosemary says. "It's shocking that it's unknown to have a list of accomplishments that long, and yet nobody even knows they were here," says Janet. The infrastructure these young men built—in national parks, state parks, and forests across America—still stands today, a testament to the quality of their work. A Serendipitous Discovery Rosemary's discovery of Wolf Gap came while researching her family's involvement in the 1880 race riot at Columbia Furnace. On the Edinburg Memories website, she found a post from Helen Larkin Burton describing how, as a young girl in her father's store, she watched "the boys from the Wolf Gap CCC" come to shop. It was, Burton wrote, the first time she'd ever seen a Black person. "I thought, what CCC are we talking about at Wolf Gap?" Rosemary recalls. She contacted a local historian who confirmed it: "Best kept secret in Shenandoah County." That discovery sparked a grassroots movement. Rosemary assembled a team of dedicated women to pursue state byway designation for Route 675, the road connecting both camps. They succeeded in getting the byway designation and are now working to have it officially named the Shenandoah County CCC Memorial Byway. The Segregation Story The conversation delves into the painful reality of segregation within the CCC. Though African American legislator Oscar De Priest had declared there would be "no discrimination according to race, creed, or color," Robert Fechner, a southerner who helped administer the program, declared that "separate was not unequal." Wolf Gap started as a white camp in its first year but became an African American camp in 1934 when administrators realized they hadn't factored in "how deeply segregated the south still was in the thirties," as Laura explains. African American camps were intentionally placed in remote areas, presumably to avoid racist confrontation. The irony, Rosemary notes, was that when African American enrollees worked battlefields to the point where tourists wanted to visit, they were often transferred to another remote location. Local populations frequently protested the placement of these camps. Finding the Descendants One of the team's greatest accomplishments, shared emotionally during the conversation, was connecting with Roy Allen Cooper, whose father, Oswald Bentley Cooper, was an enrollee at Wolf Gap. While serving, Oswald met Evelyn McAfee from Woodstock. They married and raised nine children—eight boys and one girl named Georgia—on Water Street and Spring Street in Woodstock. Roy's brother Bobby became a well-known local restaurateur, first as the opening cook at the Spring House restaurant in 1973, then running his own establishment. Roy now serves on the CCC Legacy board, providing a vital personal connection to Wolf Gap's history. The Research Challenge "The white CCC was well recorded, records up your wazoo," Rosemary says candidly during the conversation. "But the history of the Black camps is just sparse and what's there is difficult to find." The team has uncovered treasures, including a regional annual with the only known photographs of Wolf Gap enrollees—two large portraits showing the men's names and hometowns. Many came from a community in Southwest Virginia called Agricola, offering potential leads for finding more descendants. Rosemary's research has also uncovered broader stories, including the Preston Lake Rebellion in upstate New York, where African American enrollees trained as leaders were told to step down when white enrollees joined the camp. The men rebelled for three days before being sent back to Harlem—a story that even New York State's historical resources department didn't know about. The Interpretive Center and What's Next The women discuss the James R. Wilkins Sr. Interpretive Center at the US Forest Service Office in Edinburg—a partially completed museum dedicated to CCC history. Wilkins supervised projects at both camps. His son, Jimmy, has been a primary funder along with his sister Donna. The center is open to the public but unfinished. The organization is working to finalize a new agreement with the US Forest Service. As Laura emphasizes in the conversation, 2033 will mark the hundredth anniversary of the CCC's birth, and Camp Roosevelt was the first CCC camp in the nation. "Virginia was truly the epicenter of the CCC," she says. "The state of Virginia needs to embrace that history." Why This Matters When board member Colette Sylvestri presented to 300 students at George Mason University, the most frequent question was: "Why weren't we taught this?" "So much of the history of the CCC in general has just fallen by the wayside," Laura laments. Many people in their forties have never even heard of the Civilian Conservation Corps, let alone understand its contribution to the nation. The CCC didn't just build infrastructure—it restored America. As Laura puts it: "These men who built this country, really the CCC restored the United States of America to what it became after World War II." How to Get Involved The CCC Legacy welcomes new members at $35 annually. Members receive quarterly publications including bulletins and a journal with stories from CCC camps across the country. The organization also offers presentations to civic groups and is actively seeking volunteers, particularly web developers to help update their website at ccclegacy.org. For those with family connections to the CCC, the National Archives has digitized enrollee names, making it possible to search for relatives online. As the conversation wraps up, Rosemary makes a simple request: "Spread the word that this is a thing. We want people to know that this is our history." Both Camp Roosevelt and Wolf Gap are accessible to visitors today. Camp Roosevelt operates as a Forest Service campground with interpretive signage throughout. Wolf Gap, currently undergoing Forest Service renovations, will soon have its own signage installed. Standing at these remote, quiet sites at dusk, Rosemary shares, "I can hear the voices" - a poignant reminder that history isn't just about dates and statistics. It's about the young men who slept in West Virginia, walked to Virginia for breakfast, and built the America we know today. Everyone's Betting on AI...And They Just Might Be Wrong -"Computing Power Drives the Future: AI and the Next Big Thing" by William MeiselComputing power has long grown at an exponential rate. That rapid advance has allowed digital systems to do more each year. Computer power crossed a major threshold when it made "Artificial Intelligence" driven by deep neural networks economically feasible. And huge investments are being made in ever-larger computer centers to support AI. This book challenges the assumptions behind those huge investments and explains why the generative AI that is making all the news is over-rated.Computer power crossing a threshold allowed deep neural nets to be practical, and they have indeed been used effectively for many limited applications. Meisel discusses the "next big thing" that exponential growth in computer processing speed will allow. The book provides a realistic description of what we can expect as computer power grows ever more quickly than most past innovations, with major impacts on society, the economy, and competition between countries.William Meisel, PhD, was an early researcher in AI, with an PhD dissertation on neural networks and an early book on computer pattern recognition, the latter while a professor of EE and CS at USC. He then applied those techniques as the head of the computer science division of a defense company for a decade. He then founded and ran Speech Systems Incorporated, developing speech recognition technology and applications, for a decade. He then published Speech Recognition Update, a monthly paid-subscription, no-ads newsletter on commercial developments in speech recognition and natural language processing for more than twenty years and held conferences on the subject. He was also Executive Director of the non-profit Applied Voice Input Output Society during this period. He is currently an independent consultant and author. Beginning as a teenage computer hobbyist in the early '80s, his thirst for knowledge soon led him into the underground world of hacking, where he crossed paths with some of the era's top digital rebels. In 1985, his exploits culminated in a brief incarceration for infiltrating computer servers at Microsoft and three other Seattle corporations—making him the first hacker in the world to serve jail time for computer intrusion. He recounts these groundbreaking years in his memoir, The Hacker Prince – A True Story: A Memoir of Digital Rebellion in the 80s, a candid chronicle of both his adventures and misadventures in the formative days of hacking. But Mike's fascination with challenging the so called “unquestionables” did not stop there. Over the decades, he transformed from mischievous hacker to cracker. For the past 15 years, he has worked as a chiropractor on Spain's Costa Blanca, pursuing his mission to improve health “one spine and mind at a time.” In more recent years, Mike has devoted himself to independent research into non standard cosmologies, hidden histories, gigantism, catastrophism, rapid petrification, and what he has come to call biogeology. Through careful analysis of the ancient evidence, including newly discovered material, this book re-examines the two short imperial histories attributed to Victor in the manuscripts, known today as the Caesares and the Epitome de Caesaribus, and discusses a wide range of both canonical and neglected authors and texts, from Sallust and Tacitus to Eunapius and the Historia Augusta. As musician and activist BILLY BRAGG makes a welcome return as a voice of countercultural sanity, we revisit the Lost History of Skiffle as he takes us on an extraordinary whirlwind tour through the music that the counterculture forgot.   Along the way, we hear about the emergence of The Teenager in post-war Britain, the massive impact of Rock Around the Clock, the Soho espresso bar culture of the 50s and the birth of British youth culture.   We explore why Skiffle, which soundtracked that youth culture for a few intense years and was the inspiration for musicians in The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Rolling Stones, has been oddly forgotten.  And Billy explains why, as the first British DIY musical revolution, Skiffle provided the template for the Punk movement of the 70s that was to inspire him.   Along the way, we get educated about the post-war 'trad jazz' movement, the cultural stranglehold of the BBC - and the terrific transformatory power of a guy - or a girl - with a guitar.   For more on Billy and his book Roots, Radicals and Rockers: https://www.billybragg.co.uk/product/roots-radicals-and-rockers-how-skiffle-changed-the-world-hardback-signed-by-billy/   #skiffle #billybragg #beatles #rock'n'roll #teenager #1950 #musichistory

Liberalism is a term that has been adopted and adapted in different ways over the centuries of its use. How do we need to rethink and communicate the core principles of liberalism in the face of modern challenges?Helena Rosenblatt is a professor in the History, French, and Political Science departments at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). She is also the author of several books, including The Lost History of Liberalism: From Ancient Rome to the Twenty-First Century and Liberal Values: Benjamin Constant and the Politics of Religion.Greg and Helena discuss the shifting meanings and history of liberalism, focusing on key themes such as the Anglo-American appropriation of liberalism, the evolution of liberal values, and the struggle between individual rights and civic virtues. Helena also touches upon the impact of religious influence, the educational system, the rise of new liberalism, and the relevance of civic education in contemporary society. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Liberalism began with character, not politics09:10: With the advent of Christianity, we started to talk about God's liberality towards, so there was no liberalism. The noun was liberality, as you mentioned. And then it became Christianized, and it meant then charitable. And then eventually, in the 18th century, with the Enlightenment, it started to mean tolerant and sociable. A gentleman was liberal in that he was open-minded. He was polite. He was educated, and we should not forget liberal arts education. Right? So very important to liberality. And it is good to think about today when the liberal arts, we think anyway in the humanities, are under siege, if you will, you know, and people lamenting the decline of civic engagement and of qualities of a citizen—that is what the liberal arts education was supposed to teach. Why liberalism was never meant to be direct democracy26:00 We are for the people, and we are accountable to the people. But it is for the people. It is not by the people. Government—we are supposed to be generous. We are supposed to be thinking about them. We are supposed to rule for them, but we cannot possibly allow them to rule. What happens when liberal face strongmen22:00: The notion that a strongman politics, which we are seeing again today, was something that liberals became very especially concerned with because they saw what could happen when people place their faith in a strongman who appealed directly to—you know, populism is not a recent thing. They did not call it populism then? I do not think so. But this idea that I am the people, I understand the people, your so-called representatives are just, you know, in deadlock. They cannot make—they are just talking. They are just a bunch of lawyers who, you know—this is an old, very old accusation that strongmen used in order to get, very often, elected democratically, but then unravel and destroy all the safeguards that were there or were meant to be there to safeguard individual rights, for example.Show Links:Recommended Resources:LiberalismJohn LockeThomas HobbesGermaine de StaëlBenjamin ConstantFrench RevolutionFreemasonryOtto von BismarckAdam SmithWalter LippmannLiberal PartyNapoleonRichard T. Whiskey Lore

Originally meant to be my 63rd Whiskey Flight podcast, I had no idea what a historical goldmine I was stumbling into when I reached out to Cindy and Andy Sudderth of R.M. Rose Co Distillery. In this conversation, Andy Sudderth shares not only his own family's legacy in distilling, but also what he's learned about the historic RM Rose Distillery. We'll learn about Rufus Rose, a Connecticut Yankee who joined the fight with the Confederacy, the techniques used his in whiskey production, and the challenges faced the company faced with Prohibition. It's a rich history that not only covers Georgia, it seeps into my Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey book's history, as well as the history of a modern Kentucky distillery. Andy's passion for history and distilling shines through as he recounts the rich narrative behind RM Rose and its revival. We'll delve into the intricate world of distillation, exploring various techniques, the historical significance of the RM Rose distillery, and the impact of Prohibition on the whiskey industry. We also discuss the legacy of moonshine in Dawsonville, Georgia, and the cultural connections tied to one of their moonshines inspired by a classic 1970s film. We'll also cover details about the modern distillery and the new satellite locations coming online. And catch an extra 10 minutes of interview, commercial-free as a member of patreon.com/whiskeylore.
