Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is back at Magic Kingdom after a lengthy refurbishment, and Disney fans wasted no time flooding Frontierland for the reopening. I'm so excited to talk about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which makes its return after a lengthy remodel. It has been well executed and it's as fun as ever--though perhaps in a slightly less bumpy way--at least for the moment. We will cover not only the history of this mountain but of its sister mountains at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. My business partner, Mark David Jones, joins me to discuss the original opening of Big Thunder here at Magic Kingdom, where he was part of the opening crew. He emphasizes how the attraction was the starting point for massive changes that would emerge at Walt Disney World in the years that followed, making it the resort destination of the world. And of course I'll give you my play by play review of the attraction in its refurbished state. So join us as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Returns. In the 290th episode of The Main Street Electrical Podcast, Jenn & Dave are finally joined again by fan fave #KylaKylaKyla, for the first time since last September! In the news, Buzz Lightyear has reopened, and we all chat about it even though none of us have done the new version... Big Thunder has to have an opening date soon, right? [spoiler alert, they announced it right as we were done recording - its May 3] Plus, the Rock'n Roller Coaster Guitar is getting an new rethemed paint job... and Annual Passholder discounts this year, with 2026's VIPassholder dining discounts. Then, Kyla Melberg is here to talk a little travel and her busy, busy winter so far this year. She gives her Aulani report first - the dining, the travel there and back, the hotel itself, things she didn't know going in, and so on. Then her look around the island, in the other hotel they moved to, and finally a recent trip to the Dominican, with a stay at Hard Rock. Jenn chimes in with her takes as well, while Dave offers an idea for the monkey cages in Animal Kingdom (because that's all he's got for this topic!)
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feels like pure fun: a runaway mine train, a mountain of red rock, and a few perfect sight gags that hit at 35 miles an hour. But the ride's real story starts way earlier, in the myths America told itself about the frontier and the Western movies that turned those myths into pop culture. We follow that thread from Frederick Jackson Turner's famous frontier thesis to how Walt Disney shaped his original Frontierland into something that resembles actual history. Then things get messy. Mark Davis' fingerprints are all over Disney's greatest achievements and in the late-'60s he began designing his theme park masterpiece: Thunder Mesa and the Western River Expedition. And that's when things start to go wrong. But from the wreckage of the project emerged one of Disney's greatest attractions: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - the only ride that can actually be prescribed by a Doctor as a cure for kidney stones. If you love Disney history, theme park design, Imagineering legends, or just want to ride Big Thunder with smarter eyes, hit play. Subscribe, share the episode with a fellow parks nerd, and leave a review with your best Big Thunder plus-up idea. Thanks for listening! We'd love it if you would give us a review on your podcast platform of choice: iTunes, Spotify, etc... They're really helpful. And get in touch and let us know about YOUR Plus-Ups for the attractions we've talked about! We'd love to tell them on the air.Come visit us on Bluesky, Mastodon, Instagram, or whatever social media you like. Just look up Lowdown on the Plus-Up and you'll probably find us. In the 288th episode of The Main Street Electrical Podcast, Jenn & Dave are saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" early to Friend of the Show THE Derek Franks! After a few Disney's This Week, we catch up with Derek and the new job and the new company and more! Then, we take a look at two of our favorite places... Disney World and Disneyland. And how do they stack up? Resorts? Dining? Snackage? Attractions like Haunted Mansion and Pirates and big coasters? And Derek (may) have some Big Thunder insight! For those who love both parks - or maybe has only been to one - its a great take on what we think, what we know, and what we love... and of course, we keep score!
This week at Walt Disney World, February 18, 2026, Greg became one of the first guests to experience the updated Frozen Ever After, now featuring new animatronics. The refreshed scenes add improved movement, facial detail, and lighting enhancements that noticeably elevate the attraction's finale. The update signals Disney's continued investment in existing attractions while larger park expansions continue around the resort. Mardi Gras at Port Orleans Over at Disney's Port Orleans Resort, Mardi Gras celebrations added festive color and energy. The resort's New Orleans inspiration makes it a natural fit for seasonal décor, specialty food, and lively atmosphere. EPCOT Transitions to Flower & Garden As Festival of the Arts winds down, EPCOT is already shifting toward the next season. Early Flower & Garden topiaries and blooms are appearing throughout the park, signaling the start of another transformation. The quick seasonal turnover highlights how EPCOT constantly evolves throughout the year, giving returning guests something new each visit. Beyond Big Thunder: First Track Elements Revealed New construction images from Beyond Big Thunder reveal the first visible elements of Cars Land track design. The progress confirms that the next major expansion in Magic Kingdom is physically taking shape. These early structural pieces provide the clearest look yet at how the area will expand beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Changes Inside Villains Land Work continues inside Villains Land, with visible adjustments and groundwork shaping the future expansion. While Disney has not released final attraction details, movement on site suggests steady forward progress. Monstro Rises at Hollywood Studios At Hollywood Studios, the new Monstro facade is beginning to take shape. The visible exterior progress gives guests their first real glimpse of how the updated Animation Courtyard area may look once complete. You Can Get Married in the Haunted Mansion In a surprising Disney detail, couples can now host weddings inside the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. The announcement blends gothic atmosphere with Disney fairy-tale flair, offering one of the most unique wedding venues on property. Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer Sparks Buzz The latest Mandalorian & Grogu trailer dropped, and the reaction was immediate. The footage signals major cinematic momentum for Star Wars and reinforces Disney's continued investment in the franchise. All That and More with Sam & Greg Live From attraction updates and seasonal transitions to construction milestones and Star Wars hype, it was another packed week of Disney conversation. Join Sam and Greg each week for This Week at Walt Disney World LIVE, where park updates, expansion progress, and fandom moments come together.
