These three things do NOT belong inside Winky's Pub (but we kinda get why they're there.)On this episode of Distory, we pause on our journey to nowhere in particular in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride to have a pint in the pub with Mr. Winky (or is it Winkie...or Winkey?). Before we drive right in and pull up to the bar, we discover Winky's full name (and what it means in context of English history). Kate discovers a disgusting and frightening reference just outside the pub, and Kirk gets frustrated by something that shouldn't exist once we roll on inside. We consult an expert to give us the history of hunting horns, Kate crams in a few (slightly related?) Disney history stories here and there, and Kirk's beer cicerone knowledge and BJCP Beer Judge certification get put to the test as we discuss the fascinating history of barrels, fermentation, and firkins. As we bid adieu to Mr. Winky, Kate shares one last story about can-can girls, their knees, and what Alice Davis said to Walt Disney to cover her tracks. This week, Jeff welcomes Kristen back to the show to reminisce about Disney Legend Richard Sherman, who passed away on May 25. We share some thoughts about the influence he (along with brother Robert) had on popular music and the Disney Company, and we share some memories of time we spent with Richard. Other topics include our summer Disney plans (Disneyland, Aulani and the Walt Disney Family Museum), a few more thoughts about the Marc and Alice Davis auction update, and we respond to listener feedback to the last episode. BONUS: A very special performance by Kristen, which may involve some accordion.
This week, Kristen joins Jeff to talk about the recent "Marc and Alice Davis Archives" auction hosted by Heritage Auctions. We talk about the first time we met Alice Davis back in 2011, and share our memories of touring her home gallery featuring all of Marc's art, and her relationship with Mary Blair - and then we talk about our successes during the auction, and share some of the history of the eight pieces that we won. Plus - Hayley Mills will hit the big screen again; the cast of Bambi gathered recently in Sacramento, and more.
Alice Davis visits Palmetto Mornings.
Alice Davis, 2023 ChristmasVille Chair, joins Matthew and Oriana on CityCast to discuss the best parts of this year's festival. She also takes part in the Christmas movie trivia challenge.
Perhaps the most iconic ride of all time, "it's a small world" opened at the 1964-1965 World's Fair in New York at the UNICEF pavilion sponsored by Pepsi-Cola and was later moved to Disneyland, opening there in May 1966. Imagineers Mary Blair, Rolly Crump, Blaine Gibson, Marc Davis, Alice Davis, Harriet Burns and Claude Coats worked closely alongside Walt Disney to bring this attraction to life, and the Sherman Brothers (Richard and Robert Sherman) wrote its iconic theme song. With so much incredible history and a compelling message, this attraction is one of the best known in the world, and the song, written as a prayer for peace, is one of the most played songs of all time. In this podcast episode, we dive into the rich history of "it's a small world" and share some fun facts you might not have known about this attraction. The episodes includes a binaural scenic audio recording from the ride at Disneyland. What do you find most inspiring about "it's a small world"? Tag me and join the conversation below. WDW Radio # 708 - Interview with Disney Legend Alice Davis - From the WDW Radio Archives From the WDW Radio Archives... one of my all-time favorite interviews, and one that listeners reference all the time, Disney Legend, Alice Davis. I had the honor of spending the day with Alice Davis in her home, where we discussed her fairy tale story of how she came to work for and with Walt Disney through her marriage to Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men. In addition to discussing her relationships with both, we also closely examine her work on classic films such as Sleeping Beauty, and attractions such as it's a small world and Pirates of the Caribbean. Alice shares her very personal stories and humorous anecdotes about her work and life, from her early beginnings to the World's Fair, to her ongoing connection to Disney enthusiasts today. It is the only episode and guest I ever had to bleep.... listen and find out why. Sadly, Alice Davis passed on November 3, 2022, so I consider it a privilege and a gift to have been able to capture her stories in her own words... more importantly, in her own voice, and be able to share it with you. There are multiple new protocols in place to keep everyone safe, limited capacity and cancellations for theater shows, fireworks and parades. Close up character interactions are also not going to be available at this time. During the initial reopening phase, a special Disney character procession, Mickey and Friends Express, will take place several times daily, and the Enchanted Storybook Castle will come to life with light and music at dusk each day with Evening Magical Moments. They’ve added multiple requirements for getting tickets and registering your info for admittance so if you plan on heading to Shanghai, which you shouldn’t be planning to go right now unless you live in Shanghai….please, be sure to read up on all their new guidelines.Disneyland announced they will begin accepting reservations for travel dates starting July 1st and later. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE PARKS WILL BE OPEN. Previously they were taking reservations starting June 1st, so all this means is that it has been pushed back. Again, there is NO confirmed opening date so do not get your hopes up!If you have the time, go check out the plans and considerations for reopening that Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer Pam Hymel released. It talks all about the plans for phased reopenings for many disney parks, distancing and capacity requirements, cleanliness and sanitation measures, screening and cast member training. Things like old park signage and vintage publications will be available to lucky winners. Some key items on the list were a Disneyland Opening Day Press Ticket, Disneyland Railroad Main Street Station Mickey Flag, the old Bugs Land entrance sign posters and props from Star Wars, and memorabilia from the earliest years of Club 33. The movie stars Michael Jackson, was written by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola (who came up with the name "Captain EO" from the Greek, cf. Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn). The film was shown as part of an attraction with in-theater effects. The attraction returned to the Disney Parks in 2010 as a tribute after Jackson's death.Captain EO is regarded as one of the first "4D" films (4D being the name given to a 3D film that incorporates in-theater effects, such as lasers, smoke, etc., synchronized to the film)The film tells the story of Captain EO (Michael Jackson) and the ragtag crew of his spaceship on a mission to deliver a gift to "The Supreme Leader" (Anjelica Huston), who lives on a world of rotting, twisted metal and steaming vents. Captain EO's alien crew consists of his small flying sidekick Fuzzball, the double-headed navigator and pilot Idey (Debbie Lee Carrington) and Ody (Cindy Sorenson), robotic security officer Major Domo (Gary Depew), a small robot, Minor Domo (who fits like a module into Major Domo), and the clumsy elephant-like shipmate Hooter (Tony Cox) who always manages to upset the crew's missions. Dick Shawn plays Captain EO's boss, Commander Bog.AutopiaJunior Autopia (1956–1958): A version of the original Autopia geared towards children. The Junior Autopia featured a guide rail, which the original version of Autopia did not have at the time. The site of the Junior Autopia reopened a year later as the Fantasyland Autopia and is now part of the present-day Autopia.Midget Autopia (1957–1966): A version of the original Autopia geared towards young children. After the Midget Autopia closed, the ride was dismantled and sent to Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline, Missouri, where it operated for a few years. The site of the Midget Autopia is now the main walkway between It's a Small World and the rest of Fantasyland.Fantasyland Autopia (1959–1999): A version of the original Autopia, built on the site of the former Junior Autopia. The Fantasyland Autopia was known as the "Rescue Ranger Raceway" and themed to the Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers television series from 1991–1993. Its name reverted to "Fantasyland Autopia" afterwards, and operated part-time until it permanently closed in 1999. Its track was combined with the track of the Tomorrowland Autopia to create the present-day Autopia.Skull Rock and Pirate's Cove (1961–1982): A dining experience themed to Captain Hook's pirate ship. Afterward, they were hired by Knott's Berry Farm as Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies.Big Thunder Ranch (1986–2016): A Western-themed casual area for seeing shows, viewing Disneyland's horses on their breaks and days off, and dining at Big Thunder Barbecue which served ribs, chicken, potatoes, beans, and such. The Barbecue remained open for a few more years after the Ranch area became the Festival of Fools stage for The Hunchback of Notre Dame show. Up until its closing, the area was used for special events, a Petting Zoo, and seasonal attractions. It closed in early 2016 for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.Country Bear Jamboree (1972–2001): An audio-animatronic show featuring traditional American folk songs sung by a variety of bears and their friends, including Henry the host and Big Al, Shaker (a.k.a. We also share tales from the experience of Alice Davis, who created the costumes for each of the dolls. Finally, we share the actual story of "it's a small world", which involves a young boy named Bobby. Make sure you check out the accompanying post on Disney at Work.
(Rock Hill, S.C.) – Rock Hill is working to build one of the very first all-inclusive parks in the nation. City leaders officially broke ground in December for Miracle Park, a 15-acre, $8 million project that has been in the making since 2017. The park is expected to have five ball fields total, with two of them being "miracle fields" designed for anyone to be able to play on, while the rest will be multipurpose. The York County Disabilities Foundation is one of the many groups working on construction of the park. Alice Davis, a member of the group, was a guest on the Palmetto Report podcast to share more information about the park. Davis said that the inspiration for Miracle Park came about after spending a lot of time thinking about a project the foundation could work on using money they had raised. “My brother actually has a nephew in a wheelchair that plays in Greenville on a miracle league and he was telling us about it. We said we wanted to have a miracle league in Rock Hill. We dreamed big and we decided to push forward with our big, big plan instead of just a field,” said Davis.

This week, we are honored to shine a spotlight on a true Disney legend. A woman who dreamed big her entire life, and made all of her dreams come true through hard work.
While Marc’s animation career is well documented, a renewed interest in Marc’s time in the early days of WED has emerged. With the discovery of some never before seen art work, photographs and attractions that never happened such as Yestermorrow Time Machine, The Fort Wilderness Funhouse, the Garden of Gods and A Silly Symphony attraction, Marc Davis time in Imagineering was a perfect topic for a D23 Expo 2017 panel. Who better to lead the discussion than Peter Doctor (Pixar Director) and Christopher Merritt (Disney Imagineer), both of which have interviewed Marc personally and have strong connections to Marcs Wife, and fellow Imagineer, Alice Davis. The focus of the panel and forthcoming book by Peter and Christopher is Marc’s time in Imagineering. The panel in its entirety is the subject of SamsDisneyDiary Episode #96. Thanks for watching, and be sure to subscribe for all of the latest.

**Subscribe on iTunes** Contact Us Like Us On Facebook Disney Avenue New RSS Feed The Disney Avenue Podcast returns with a fantastic interview with Walt Disney Imagineering's original “designing woman” Alice Davis. Married to Disney Legend Marc Davis, she enjoyed a fashionable Disney career of her own, designing and dressing animated figures for such beloved Disneyland attractions as it’s a small world and Pirates of the Caribbean. One day, she received a call from her former art instructor and future husband, Marc. He needed a costume designed and created for Helene Stanley to wear for some live-action reference footage being filmed to inspire his animation of the lead character Briar Rose in Sleeping Beauty. That job led Alice to design costumes for Disney’s live-action motion picture Toby Tyler. In 1963, Walt Disney recruited Alice to contribute her skill to the attraction it’s a small world for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Collaborating with art designer and Disney Legend Mary Blair, Alice researched, designed, and supervised the creation of more than 150 highly detailed costumes for the Audio-Animatronics children of the world. During this time, Alice also formulated costuming procedures, set up a manufacturing base, and developed quality control refurbishing techniques, which established the standards for three-dimensional characters in rides and shows created by WDI. In 1965, she translated the pirates’ attire from Marc’s original drawings of the shiver-me-timbers cast and crew into clothing designs and patterns for all of the costumes featured in Pirates of the Caribbean. Two years later, when the attraction opened at Disneyland, guests were dazzled by the animated figures and their colorful, textured pirate-wear. Later, Alice contributed to General Electric’s Carousel of Progress and the Flight to the Moon attractions. Married in June 1956, Alice and Marc enjoyed a Disney fairy-tale-romance-come-true for 44 years until Marc’s death in 2000. Alice has continued to consult for the Company, and remains a frequent face at Disneyland events. She was honored with a window on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland—next to her husband’s window—on May 10, 2012. The Disney Avenue Podcast would like to thank Geren Piltz for his contributions to this show!

Not Disney's Hollywood Studios, but rather the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood California to see 101 Dalmatians on the big screen.
