As he puts it on his song, “sfts,” he also “studied Ab-Soul,” not only to “illuminate [his] mind,” but also to enhance his skills as a wordsmith. Highlighted by the opening track, “Believe It,” the project sounds something like the crossroads of dance music and hip-hop. In the two years following, an improving Malik would return with his next two projects, Medium Volume EP and Free Lemonade with standout track, “Cuban Link.” Since these releases, Malik Elijah has focused on single releases, most notably, the EDM club banger, “Kayakontheriver” featuring William Crooks, “Icannotbethem” featuring Nuke Franklin, and “Blinding” featuring ICECOLDBISHOP. In July 2022, Malik Elijah released his album, DETOUR with standout tracks, “QUIETDOWN,” “ATITAGAIN” featuring Isaac Zale and Nuke Franklin, and “NOWHERE” featuring Marco Plus. Through therapy, Imani was introduced to the concept of racial trauma and discovered how her own unrecognized racial trauma affected her mental health, self-image, and worldview.Spanning more than twenty years, Imani weaves together a multigenerational family portrait of her experiences growing up in the south to her career as a young Black professional, where she was often one of the few black people in the room. Grounded in truth and reality, in a series of insightful and deeply affecting essays on race, gender, and identity, Imani writes about career, money, religion, food, health, dating, friendships, body image and beauty, and ultimately, through therapy, her mental health, and well-being.Sincere and inspiring, soulful and uplifting, Therapy Isn't Just For White People is a timely reminder of why the telling and sharing of untold Black stories are central to understanding the pervasive race issues in America. “Hold your head high and wear your Black skin with pride,” Imani writes, embarking on a journey of understanding, healing, empathy, self-love, and taking control of her personal narrative about what it means to be Black in America in the 21st century.

In this episode, we discuss the positive and negative effects faith has on culture & society and vice versa. We explore how some artists and celebrities capitalize on gospel influence to make money and how others push away from spiritual topics altogether. Are we putting our faith and hope in things that are real or is a para faith dynamic that leads to a false sense of hopelessness? Show Notes: We use the article by Marquis Arnold titled Hip-Hop's relationship with God: Hip-Hop's best music spiritual moments.Kanye West – “Jesus Walk”When it comes to Kanye West, he has never shyed away from his relationship with God from the very beginning of his career. Kanye has shown us that even with all of his success, he still has his own battles with God and doing what is right in life.J Cole – “Want You Fly”When I first heard this song, it was on a J Cole HBO documentary. This is a great song that discusses God using us for a bigger purpose. From the beginning of this song, Cole is discussing a relationship with God. When it comes to the world we live in, a lot of these teenagers don't go to church so the closes thing they have to church is an artist like Cole talking about relationships with God. Cole touches on modern music being what can lead people to read biblical scriptures in church.Kendrick Lamar – “Faith”When Kendrick Lamar dropped his classic debut “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” in 2012 to some people that might have been their first time hearing Kendrick discuss his relationship with God. For example, on his mainstream debut, he started it with a prayer.Tupac – “So Many Tears”When It comes to the life of Tupac Shakur, he was a great poet, rapper, actor and was one of the first mainstream rappers to let it be known how he felt about what was going on in the world. Tupac had no filter and lived the life he wanted to live even though it was cut short at the age of 25.Chance The Rapper: Coloring BookA “Chance” of Success: The Influence of Subcultural Capital on the Commercial Success of Chance The Rapper by multiple authors shows how Chance the Rapper's career has led him to where he is today. This case study describes Chance the Rapper's path to success. The findings show that his accusation of subculture within the areas of Christian and Hip-Hop cultures. Also his use of economic, cultural, social and symbolic capital helped build a large following which in turn led to great success. But here have been negative views on faith in music:one example of which being A$AP Rocky on his album “AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP,” and more specifically, the track entitled “Holy Ghost.” A$AP Rocky speaks on his view of Christianity and looks at his personal relationship with it, saying, “They ask me why I don't go to church no more, cause church is the new club.Questions from the show: Does faith have a positive or negative effect on culture and society?Where do you think Faith sits on the list of things that shaped your being? Are you able to see trust after betrayal? As an adult what are you putting your faith in?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of TikToks about ‘healing your inner child' — a phrase describing the broad process of addressing and fixing the way in which your childhood can negatively impact who you are today. Some of these videos are actually pretty great — they offer in-depth explanations of confusing and relatively new terminology, generalized advice about finding a therapist to deal with any unresolved childhood trauma, or explanations of their own healing journeys. But, as it typically is with Tiktok, some of these videos seem to be promoting things that are genuinely unhealthy. In this episode Jasmine, Javon, and Jason discuss the workings of their inner child. Whether it is listening to that metaphorical voice in your head or dealing with unresolved trauma with a licensed therapist. This episode is for those who are focused on the desire to feel that your younger self would be happy with how you turned out. Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Start for FREE

The new year is finally here, and with it, myriad resolutions. Or are you abandoning the tradition, opting for a stress free ease into the 2022 year. According to History, the Babylonians were the first to make New Year's resolutions, about 4,000 years ago. Similarly, in ancient Rome, sacrifices were made to a deity and promises were made for the upcoming year. In today's time, people — around 45% of them in America alone — think about changes they need to implement, with just 8% of them following through on these goals.Jasmine, Javon, and Jason heated up the mic for the season priemier of Let Me Get My Headphones by talking euphoria, conspiracy theories, and the latest music releases. No matter how much work you put into it, building and maintaining new meaningful friendships as an adult can be challenging. Many say this is because adults are stuck in their ways and find it hard to deviate from that. Plus, they don't have the built-in opportunities previously had when they were younger and everyone was at similar life stages. As adults grow older, some may get married, have kids, while other friends are single and having fun - the desire to be around people at similar stages is even more necessary than before. In this episode, the crew reflects on the efforts and changes they are doing to form new friendships in adulthood. Exploring the difference between transactional, reciprocal, and personal relationships.
