H31R blends electronica and hip hop together creating an enigmatic but complementary sonic experience that pushes the fickle boundaries of genre. JWords and maassai both grew up listening to a variety of genres and later using the sounds of their youth to expand on the potential and style of their own music. It wasn't until the two met while playing a show together in 2017 where they'd quickly become friends. JWords and maassai would come to know each other's respective styles in production and rhyme while developing on their own projects and later build on a mutual desire to bridge the gap between hip hop and electronic music. They'd start with one-off tracks like “My Name Jack?” which would appear on maassai's debut EP ‘C0n$truct!0n'. This ad-lib process continued with the heavy-hitting “Toxic Behavior”. With schedules opening up during the pandemic, the extra time allowed the two to hone in on their evolving sound and record their first album.

The Creative Music at the DIA concerts highlight an important avant-garde community jazz movement that prominently featured Detroit-based musicians, of which many players are still active today. Both onstage and in continuing musical collaborations, these concerts triangulated and expanded musical connections with the older avant-minded collectives that had been its models, The AACM in Chicago and BAG in St. Louis. Veranda Culture is a musical project established by Australian electronic music artist and dublab resident DJ Griffin James (known mostly for his work under his Francis Inferno Orchestra). The project emerged in 2017 with a album and record label that was a compelling escape from the regular programming of James's previously known works, trading off late night dance music for an emotive bed of sound that is hard to pin down but effortless to absorb as a whole. For the past 3 years since its entrance in to the music sphere (while remaining in a low key state of existence), little trickles of new music and teasers of a follow up VC album have appeared via the projects Bandcamp and on social media platforms but nothing with complete confirmation. Micachu & the Shapes are one of the funnest bands to watch perform. We trust you'll open up your imagination wide as you're listening to this great band fly through some tunes full of quirkiness and punch. Think of the incredible gestures they made while making these sounds. Maybe they are beating drums, ukulele and keys in a jumpy stomping jam or maybe they're floating far above the Earth dropping notes to the tops of trees below so that birds may form nests for their young to fly skyward and flap a wing hello back at Micachu. Or possibly these sounds are evoking images of a robotic roadrunner looping around a track as the audience stomps and mashes the floor with enthusiastic cheers of encouragement. Whatever your visions may involve we hope you enjoy this “sprout session” from one of our favorite bands.

Pregnant is the bottomless and humble musical interest and hobby of Daniel Trudeau. The project has existed for over a decade in all plausible slews and fashions from a solo incarnation on into a quintet and is always presented first and foremost as Electronic Pop, although that definition cannot and will not fully sum a conclusive aural understanding of the material. Trudeau invites his eclectic imagination, along with whatever available retinue of performers, to imbue his music with a contextually familiar sound and for the purpose of pulling in even the most bereft listeners; domesticating them, for lack of a better word, to go on a proper listening journey.

Davia Spain is a prism. The light and dark of a life buoyed by triumph and marred by tragedy is refracted through her work, the lilt of existence as recognizable as her lithe contralto. Her art is a melange of mediums, a stew of classical and jazz training, electronic experimentation, theater, intrepid filmmaking and sinuous dance. Her latest work, ‘Dawning,' is an exhalation, a diaphramatic release in which her experiences are explored, absorbed and released through a sci-fi concept album about a woman sent from underwater to save earth. Born in Lagos, raised in California; Omolara Abode, often called Omo for short, spent most of her formative years exploring digital media as a platform for alternative storytelling. After a childhood of experimentation with late 90s consumer equipment, she finessed her technical skills at UCLA's School of Film and Television, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in production and directing. She is currently completing her Preliminary Teaching Credential in Mathematics. Her creative endeavors led her to the world of immersive media – video projections, mapping, and installations featuring what she calls “video collage” – foregoing the traditional narrative methods of post-production and opting for visually arresting timelines within common yet ever-evolving venues; including art galleries, warehouse raves, nightclubs, and alternative-minded corporate events. Omo anticipates a shift in how film and video are used for creative expression, and has found that immersive media is the tool of using an environment (even virtual ones) for the purpose of making statements through intensely curated content. http://instagram.com/videomo.mov The performances aim to create a physical and conceptual space that enriches and promotes the practice of Los Angeles musicians and visual artists. Funding from this grant, has enabled both organizations to pair six visual artists with six musicians to create 6 new collaborative audiovisual performances. Dublab x FEMMEBIT Present: The Art of Performance – W/ Jackie Stewart and Eva Aquila. Jackie “Oblivia” Stewart started performing sound in 1979 in Portland, Oregon. Mostly performing within groups until 2001, when she performed a DJ “throw down” of sorts (both DJ’s performed at the same time) and it ended up as a collaboration. Groups Jackie has performed in include “the improvs” (1979), “Spy vs. Spy” (1980), “Babylon 2000” (1981-83), and “Smegma” (1982-present). Though Stewart experimented on guitar and very much enjoys vocals, she has found her focus with turntables. Her visual art medium is assemblage or collage, so it comes naturally to Jackie to assemble sounds. She enjoys hearing how beautiful or humorous “mixing” can be, in the same way things come together visually when assembling her cut-up art pieces. With Smegma she says “I can enjoy a freedom of expression, totally unrestricted and of my own: as in I choose to interpret what my part will sound like. It has enabled me to learn much about recording and live performance.” Jackie’s sounds have appeared on dozens of releases, both solo and in group formats, in addition to her work with video. Eva Aguila is a multidisciplinary artist and organizer from Los Angeles, CA. Aguila’s artistic background includes, video, performance, and sound. Her passion for video art started in 2010 when she started the cable access television show, Experimental Half-Hour with her partner Brock Fansler. Through Experimental Half-Hour, Aguila collaborated, curated, and applied analog special effects with performers and other video artists to create collaborative art videos. Aguila co-created Coaxial Arts Foundation in 2015 as a way to further the community of media art in LA, as well as foster the community itself. Her passion for grassroots organizing started as a need to uplift underrepresented art communities. Inspired by the in-between and structuralist techniques, her work most recently is informed by the oral histories and Mexican diaspora of rural communities of Michoacan where her parents and family are from. The performances aim to create a physical and conceptual space that enriches and promotes the practice of Los Angeles musicians and visual artists. In 2014, Morris co-founded LISTEN, a feminist organization that promotes the visibility and experiences of marginalized peoples in Australian music. Morris has allowed their own politics and non-binary identity to challenge and stretch their pop gifts. With the release of the last Pikelet album in 2016, Morris was described as one of Australia’s “most fascinating and underrated musical icons.”
