Edward Bartlett, the president of DAVIA, joins us for a thought-provoking conversation that challenges conventional wisdom on domestic violence. We scrutinize the gender-neutral mission of his organization and question prevailing stereotypes that paint men as the primary aggressors. Through our exploration, we examine how feminist rhetoric might have inadvertently encouraged violence against men, and we trace the roots of these narratives back to influential legislation like the 1994 Violence Against Women Act. Our discussion takes a deeper dive into the effects of feminist and Marxist ideologies on society, particularly concerning traditional family structures and the mental health crisis among young white females. Alarmingly, 56% of this demographic has been diagnosed with mental health conditions, prompting us to examine the narratives they are faced with. We redefine feminism as embracing one's identity while distinguishing between equal rights and uniform outcomes. Contrary to popular belief, CDC data reveals the significant number of male victims of domestic violence, urging listeners to reconsider commonly held misconceptions. Finally, we explore the global impact of Marxist ideology and how it's influenced gender politics and cultural norms. While examining the polarizing effects of labeling, we express optimism for movements in the US aimed at combating discriminatory practices. In partnership with the International Council for Men and Boys, DAVIA is at the forefront of raising awareness on these issues, and we encourage our listeners to support these vital causes through resources like www.menandboys.net
Lured in by a blackboard sign on the street in Davia's neighborhood announcing “Spotlight on Black Entrepreneurs,” we enter the creative and growing world of Black-Owned Pet Businesses. Lick You Silly dog treats, Trill Paws enamel ID Tags, The Dog Father of Harlem's Doggie Day Spa, gorgeous rainbow beaded Dog Collars from The Kenya Collection, Sir Dogwood luxurious modern dog-wear.Chaz Olajide of Sir Dogwood wasn't finding communities of pet owners or pet businesses owned by people of color. “I did a deep dive into the statistics —I just wanted to see if maybe I was an outlier, like maybe the reason why I'm not seeing more diversity in these companies is because maybe the demand isn't out there. Actually, you know, that's not really the case.”“The dog training world—it's a white dominated space. It's kind of male dominated, too,” says Taylor Barconey of Smart Bitch Dog Training in New Orleans. “On our profile on Instagram we have Black Lives Matter, it's been there for a year now. Before 2020, we would have not felt comfortable putting that up at risk of losing our business because people would have blacklisted us. But now, we feel like we can finally breathe and be open about things that really matter to us—speaking out against racism and not feeling shy about it.”Brian Taylor, owner of Harlem's Doggy Day Care lost both his uncle and long time mentor to Covid. During the pandemic his business slumped by 80%. So with some help from his pet parents and supporters he decided to hit the road with “The Pup Relief Tour offering grooming services to anyone going through rough times and in need. “All together we had about 63 African American dog groomers that went on tour with us across the country and we groomed over 829 dogs.”Dr. Kwane Stewart, is an African American veterinarian who walks skid row in downtown LA tending the unhoused dogs of unhoused people. Send us a Text Message. The magnificent Davia Schendel joins Jeff and Matt to discuss Suzi Quatro's second album, Quatro.Today's conversation definitely goes deep into "music nerd" territory. We talk about record stores of the past, making playlists devoted to things like gated reverb and snare hits. Should we talk about the underrated power player in music that is known as the saxophone? You're darn right, we should. How much does the bass rule? We've got thoughts. There are stray conversations about movie soundtracks, AOR soundtrack rarities , Roxy Music and Duran Duran. We discuss some non-musical things too, you know, the related and relevant topics like the holy trinity of oxygen machines, smoking and gambling. But there's also wisdom. Davia puts the thought out there about how "nothing is singular." We're keeping that as our new mantra. It was truly a joy to speak with Davia about so many things and it's a conversation that we both walked away from feeling energized and inspired.Check out Through the Deluge, Davia's newest EP -- and make sure to sign up for her newsletter/podcast, Zeitgest Deterrent. On April 12, 2024, Eleanor Coppola, artist, filmmaker, mother and wife of director Francis Ford Coppola, died at her home in the Napa Valley surrounded by family. She was 87 years old and had lived a most remarkable life.Shortly before her death, Eleanor had completed her third memoir. In it she wrote:“I appreciate how my unexpected life has stretched and pulled me in so many extraordinary ways and taken me in a multitude of directions beyond my wildest imaginings.”On May 6, 2008, on the occasion of the release of her second memoir, Notes on a Life, Eleanor and Davia sat down together at The Commonwealth Club of California and had this conversation before a live audience. Our thanks to The Commonwealth Club of California for sharing this 2008 recording. This conversation was part of their Good Lit Series, underwritten by the Bernard Osher Foundation. The Kitchen Sisters' San Francisco studio is located in Francis and Eleanor's Zoetrope building in North Beach. Ellie has been a part of our lives since the day we came here some three decades ago. Our love goes to the many generations of the Coppola family.
Over the years, The Kitchen Sisters have zeroed in on Memphis, Tennessee in a big way. The inspiration for that and the inspiration for some of our favorite stories is Knox Phillips. Davia met Knox in 1997 in Memphis when she was doing casting for Francis Ford Coppola's film The Rainmaker. She was on the set standing next to a guy. Cool hair, great smile. During the long set up between takes they started talking. About Memphis, about music, about radio. She told him about a new series we were starting to produce for NPR — Lost & Found Sound. Stories about sonic pioneers and people possessed by sound. The guy with the cool hair listens. “Girl, I think you better come over to the house and meet my parents. My dad, Sam, started the Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records. He recorded Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Howlin' Wolf.... When he sold Elvis' contract he and my mother, Becky, used the money to start the first all-girl radio station in the nation, WHER: 1000 Beautiful Watts.”Nikki was on a plane to Memphis the next day and we drove to the Phillips family house that night. Knox, Sam, Becky and Sam's girlfriend Sally were all there and the stories started pouring out. We walked in at 7:00 and left after midnight, recording the whole time. Those interviews became the basis of some of the most groundbreaking Kitchen Sisters pieces. Knox Phillips — producer, promoter of Memphis music, Keeper of his family's legacy, died in April 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic, and never really got his due. His massive spirit, love and music live on.

READ MORE ON THE STORY: The UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms the “dignity and worth of the human person” and the “equal rights of men and women.” (1) But UN agencies have ignored this principle in order to embrace Marxist concepts of “oppressors” and “the oppressed.” In the first incident, Sarah Douglas, Deputy Chief at UN Women, endorsed 153 tweets accusing Israel of “genocide” and other crimes. Douglas addressed a UN meeting via webcam with a large “Palestine” poster in the background. Such actions represent a breach of UN staffers' obligation to be neutral and impartial (2). In the second case, UN Women issued thousands of tweets making the claim that violence against women and girls “remains the most widespread and pervasive human rights violation worldwide.” (3) In truth, women commit domestic violence as often as men (4), and twice as many males as females are killed by injuries and violence (5). The United Nations has expressed concerns about the problem of disinformation (6). But inexplicably, the UN General Assembly remained silent in the face of these repeated instances of disinformation by UN Women. A range of other ethical, scientific, and human rights violations have been committed by UN agencies, as well: · Human Rights Council (7) · UNICEF (8) · UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (9) · World Health Organization (10) Last month, U.S. senator Mike Lee introduced a bill to defund the United Nations (11). On this episode of Tradeswork: The Rocky Mountain Mechanical Contractors Association Podcast, at the insistence of his partners at Catalyst Public Affairs and his producer Jon Ekstrom, Dave Davia sits down for an exit interview as he prepares to depart Rocky Mountain MCA after 17 years of service. Jon asks Dave for his origin story at Rocky Mountain MCA, asks him to name his proudest accomplishments (which Dave expertly and humbly deflects, as is his way), inquires what his advice would be for his successor, and closes by finding out what Dave wanted to be when he grew up. The conversation is a fitting cap to Dave's impressive career advocating on behalf of the skilled trades and the many partnerships, friendships, and achievements along the way. We are grateful for Dave's service to the organization, and we wish him nothing but continued success and prosperity in his new venture. For five years Davia's father, Lenny Nelson, asked her to go to Rattlesden, England, to visit the Air Force base where he was stationed during WWII and to find an old photograph hanging in the town pub honoring his 8th Air Force squadron. It was still there, over 50 years later, he told her. Finally, one fine Sunday, Davia headed out in search of the pub and a piece of her father's past—the piece he was proudest of. Lenny died on Christmas Eve 2015. In his honor, we share the journey with you. Samuel Shelton Robinson helped produce this story with The Kitchen Sisters. He's from London. It seemed only right.

Plus, after Tanner's highly suspicious eleventh-hour shift from Davia to Rachel and Becca's entirely inexplicable exit, it looks like the Big Bachelor Mafia has returned to the beaches of Paradise. This week on Hungry Roses, Gretchen and Ivana scream into the ether about the many things Bachelor in Paradise producers/ editors decided to NOT show us. By this we mean so much happened--John Henry chooses Kat over Olivia, Tanner ditches Davia, everyone ignores the fact that Jess and Tyler had a steamy make out the day before, and BECCA ABANDONS BRAYDON AT THE ROSE CEREMONY--but we dont see how any of it unfolded!! There was no "Here's how we got from point A to point B," just a lot of "WEL, WE'RE HERE NOW..." So that being said, grab your snacks and bevvies and settle in as Ivana and Gretchen try to unravel it all, because none of this makes any sense! Kat has seen your comments and heard your thoughts, so today on “Bachelor Happy Hour,” “Bachelor in Paradise's” most talked-about beachgoer sits down with Joe and Serena to discuss it all. Throughout the interview, Kat looks back on everything that has gone down in “Paradise” so far and shares her side of the story (not at max volume). She reveals what kinds of conversations she and Brayden had about their future those first few days in “Paradise,” why Tanner going on a date with Davia was especially hurtful, and why she didn't feel bad pursuing John Henry while he was still involved with Olivia. She also responds to viewers labeling her a hypocrite, acknowledges that her ego sometimes gets the best of her, explains why she's grateful to have girlfriends who check her when she needs it, and so much more. Today on “Bachelor Happy Hour,” Joe and Serena chat with Tanner, the man at the center of the latest love triangle in “Paradise”! In their discussion, Tanner doesn't hold back as he reveals the expectations he and Kat set about being exclusive on the beach, how he felt learning that Davia had no intentions of getting to know any other guys, and whether there was anything Kat could have done to stop him from going on the date, even though it was her birthday. Plus, Tanner reveals how it felt to learn that Davia had spoken to Kat before he got the chance to and whether he thinks he did anything wrong by asking Kat out in the first place. After last night's episodes of “The Golden Bachelor” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” the emotions across Bachelor Nation are at an all-time high, and Joe and Serena are ready to discuss it all. On “The Golden Bachelor,” Gerry made his toughest eliminations yet, and Joe and Serena did not see it coming. They also discuss their enjoyment in seeing a new side of Faith, a subtle moment of shade from Leslie, and why Gerry was right not to give out a rose during the group date. Plus, is “You're my girl” the Golden version of “I love you”? Then, things are as wild as ever in “Paradise,” and Joe and Serena are fully invested in it all. As they break down last night's episode of “Bachelor in Paradise,” they discuss how things would have been different if Davia had come down the night of the Rose Ceremony instead of Sam P., why Brayden might actually be a great match for Rachel, and why, if anyone was to have a birthday in “Paradise,” they are SO excited it's Kat. Be sure to follow so you never miss an episode. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Kay and Jared are fully settled in to paradise and have mixed feelings. The drama has never been better but is everyone just super unlikable? They discuss. Also, they say who is who from the cast of Mean Girls, and you guessed it, Kat is Regina. Karma doesn't care about Kat, or birthdays and comes in the form of Davia who whisks Tanner away for a date. Si & Veronica are feeling like kids again with episode 287! It's crunch time for the ladies and Gerry as this week halves them to take the final 3 to hometowns next week. The week starts off with the most Bachelor-inspired one-on-one with Faith where they ride in a helicopter, land on a yacht, and spend time in a hot tub and she secures the first rose and hometown spot. The group date takes Gerry and the ladies to the Santa Monica Pier to let their inner child out as they play games and ride the rides. It is do or die time and Theresa confesses she is falling in love, Ellen affirms how she said that last week, and Leslie expresses her feelings more too. Gerry can't give out the group date rose and saves it for the rose ceremony where he sends Sandra, Susan, and Ellen home. The Paradise Gods listened and sent down a new Sam with a rose to give out and the boys are clamoring for a chance at it. Canadian Sam ends up giving it out to Peter after Olivia chooses John Henry for her rose over him. Mercedes chose Tyler over Will, which means he, Sean, Aaron S., and John B. all head home. It's Kat's bday in paradise and all she wants is a date card and time with Tanner and instead Rachel gets the date card and takes her ex Brayden, and then Davia comes down and takes Tanner on her date. Tanner's immediate yes and Kat's inability to just directly say how that upsets her to him leads to her spiraling into sobs and pounding a pinata in his and Davia's absence. A game of truth or dare spices things up and reveals that Jess feels locked in with Blake when she isn't sure if that's even what she wants and hasn't felt like she has gotten to explore. The beach is tense after Davia and Tanner get back from their date as we all wait to see how Kat will handle Tanner next week… Join us for what is always a good time and leave us a rating and review for a shoutout! In the early 1980s, Black students and the African American community at American University had been demonstrating for more access and inclusion in the university's community services. One of the demands was for four hours of time every Saturday on Radio station WAMU, the campus station. This demand was met and suddenly Black students and the community were pouring into the station on Saturdays to make radio, to learn the craft, to be heard. Judi Moore Smith heard the call and soon was producing 10 minutes every week during that four-hour Saturday slot. Someone heard one of Judi's pieces and urged her to apply for funding. She was already going to Union Temple Baptist Church in Anacostia near Washington DC, mesmerized by the preaching of Rev. Willie Wilson. She began to cross the country interviewing preachers and ministers, capturing their speaking styles, their preaching styles, listening, watching, realizing these were not only religious men delivering weekly sermons—these were performing artists. Judi lit the path with this piece and the creation of a deep archive of Black history and creative expression. It is one of the projects that has inspired us over the years—the spirit, the stylizing, the swagger, the soul, the poetry—and the music. Judi asked one of the preachers, Reverend Robert Pruitt, to do the narration for the piece and gathered a kind of congregation in the studio with him to enact call and response. Davia reached out to Judi this year to see if she had a copy of the piece. It was created in the days way before the internet and the archiving of everything. Luckily we found a cassette of it at the Pacifica Archives. Special Thanks to Judi Moore Latta for all her pioneering radio documentary work especially about Black culture, history and expression and her decades of teaching and working with hundreds of young people across the years. And thanks to Pacifica Archive. The Kitchen Sisters Present is produced by The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, with Brandi Howell and Nathan Dalton. American business can be a force for finding common ground, but large corporations must now answer to a growing array of stakeholders, who often have opposing views on hot-button issues. In this episode, we hear about the daily hazards and opportunities for corporate leaders, and get practical lessons on how they can respond to today's changing political, cultural and social landscape. in a clear, caring and authentic voice.

“Follow the path of peace when we think about unhealthy relationships, not only with others, but within ourselves. Some of us have toxic beliefs about ourselves, limiting thoughts, and self sabotaging behaviors... Allowing yourself to really believe that you deserve the peace and kind of giving yourself permission to have a life that's full of it.” - Davia RobertsWelcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! Ice Cube once said, “Check yourself before you wreck yourself” and while the song was a bop in the 90s, it still begs the question, “How often do we actually check ourselves?” Do we have the tools we need to recognize when we're being less than loving? When we're being petty? Do we know how to course-correct? And then, what about our boundaries? If others don't know how to check themselves, how do we set proper boundaries to maintain our peace of mind and forward movement? Well, of course we're not just posing questions. We have Davia Roberts, licensed professional therapist at the table and we're serving up some real talk on recognizing and navigating toxic behavior because nobody likes a Petty Betty. In 2020, the weight of our personal lives seeped into our careers more than ever. Some companies took note and made a commitment to integrating mental health and wellness into company culture. I've had the pleasure to partner with companies like ServiceNow, Fidelity Investments, and Lululemon to develop therapeutic programming to support the mental health and wellbeing of their staff members. As a mental health consultant, I cultivate space for professionals to process their feelings and develop new tools for coping. Employees often share how they feel valued when leadership is willing to invest in their wellbeing. Plus, leadership notes the boost in morale. In 2021, I hope more companies become wellness-minded and I'd love to help more companies make the transition. - Davia RobertsIn this episode we cover[00:01 - 04:16] Take a Seat at the Stay A While Table[04:17 - 10:52] Food Is Love, Therapeutic, and Nourishing[10:53 - 23:21] Identifying the What and the Who: Behavior, Abuse, and Relationships[23:22 - 36:55] The Intentional Call to Action - Paving the Path to Maturity[36:56 - 48:34] Becoming the Most Important Person in Your Life[48:35 - 52:56] Closing Segment Key Quotes“If we don't communicate what those things [boundaries] are, we're going to continue to be in a toxic relationship, because we're both contributing to this pattern of frustration, not having healthy boundaries or healthy communication... It's important to figure out or just start with the question, one, ‘What's really bothering me in this situation?', ‘What do I need to communicate as far as my hurt?', and ‘What do I need to communicate for my boundary or my need moving forward so we can have a healthy relationship?' And lastly, if that doesn't change, what am I willing to do about it?” - Davia Roberts“When you don't recognize that the environment that nurtured you, and, you know, formed you into the adult that you are, if you're not able to see the dynamics of that, the behavior you're learning is just going to carry over into your adult life, and into your relationships. And until you're able to see that for yourself, then you're not going to make the changes necessary to become an adult, and to be mature. ” - Davia Roberts“Yes, it is easier said than done. But I'm like, if you want something to be different, imagine or just revisit the discomfort you had when people use those same techniques on you, when someone you cared about didn't speak to you for weeks, when you didn't know what you did wrong, but you could feel the discontent and the strain in the relationship, even though you wanted to fix it.” - Davia Roberts“Love definitely does not intentionally hurt. And if you have hurt someone and you love them, then you want to resolve that because love should feel good." - Tommi Vincent“When we love people, and we make a decision to love them well, that means that we can have heavy conversations knowing that both of us have good intentions for one another because there's an understood love there.” - Davia RobertsConnect with Davia RobertsInstagram: https://instagram.com/justdaviaLearn more about Davia's practice, The Carrier Bradley Agency Website: https://www.carrierbradley.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/carrierbradley_ Connect with Me!
