There are few things more satisfying than taking an idea and turning it into a reality. Some call that manifesting (ahem, like Minji) and some call it just taking simple actions to achieve a goal. Potato, po-tah-to. Whatever you call it, there's SO much that gets in the way, all the imposter syndrome (bleh), the self-sabotage (ugh), the literal years of procrastinating (yeesh), legit life/time/money challenges, and so on and so forth. In this episode, Minji celebrates the creation of her first COMPLETED short film "HONESTLY" that she wrote and starred in with the film's director and her beloved homie Scott Sayasithsena. Together they share what they can about their tiny film project sans spoilers - the idea, the genesis of the collab, the internal hurdles, the logistical nightmares, and the incredible reception they received premiering the short at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival in May 2023 alongside some stellar filmmakers. It's one tiny gigantic step that might've taken a long *** time to take, but it's 100% worth commemorating to remind us every path is unique, be kind to yourself, and to keep on keeping on. Fast forward to today, Emy has secured a decorated resume for herself including the show that inspired it all - Miss Saigon - in the Broadway company. Bringing it back full circle, she recently finished filming & producing one of her favorite projects yet, titled ‘The Girl Who Left Home', that features a plot emulating one of the most difficult times she's had to face in real life: the loss of her dad. Playing the role of the nanay in a Filipino-lead film offered her a unique, cathartic opportunity to work through her grief. She dedicates this pride point in her life to her late father, and considers it an homage to her mother.  Emy shares the beauty of Filipinos in show business, and explains why the quality of your community is more important than its quantity. the Furious, and in between, explores issues of documentary filmmaking, emerging media, and Asian-American identity. The episode features Sue Ding...We begin our discussion of Ding’s recent film, The Claudia Kishi Club, by exploring how and why the character of Claudia from The Babysitters Club franchise spoke to a generation of Asian-American youth and inspired many to enter the arts, helping to pave the way for more recent representations of Asian-American characters in YA media and beyond. We consider what it means that a new generation of youth are coming of age in a world of more diverse and inclusive representations. Ding tells us about efforts by BIPOC documentary artists to form networks for mutual support and collaboration that are responding to their historic exclusion. Discussing her role programming emerging media for the Los Angeles Asian-Pacific Film Festival, Ding describes how Covid-19 and Zoom are changing what we mean by emerging media as well as why augmented reality, mixed reality, and other emerging forms offer potential to tell new kinds of stories. We close with some of her reflections on the importance of The Fast and the Furious franchise and its evolving representations of race and gender.  Baby Sitter’s Club phenomenonClaudia KishiClaudia and Asian American womenWhich Baby-Sitters Club character are you?Velvet UndergroundThe Claudia Kishi Club includes interviews with:Naia CucukovGale GalliganSarah KuhnCB LeeYumi SakugawaPhil YuThey Call Us Bruce episode on Claudia KishiBaby-Sitters Club author Ann MartinThe Baby-Sitters Club on NetflixSome other current YA TV we mentioned:Pen15Sex EducationTo All the Boys I’ve Loved BeforeNever Have I EverAsian characters in YA fictionBechdel TestManzanar National Historic SiteSue’s sound installation for ManzanarGrandmother MimiMulan controversyIndieWire – Documentary films have a race problemBrown Girls Doc MafiaAsian American Documentary NetworkEmerging Media Program – Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film FestivalFilm festivals go virtualVR for a mass audience:The VoidStar Wars VRVR pornFor more discussion on VR, check out Episode 10: Nonny De La Peña on Ready Player One and the ethics and aesthetics of virtual reality The Fast and the Furious:Box office successGlobal fan baseWesley Morris on Race in The Fast and the Furious franchiseThe Rock – Samoan background in Hobbes and ShawVin Diesel as racially ambiguousSue’s episode of KCET’s Artbound: Light & Space George Takei:The TerrorThey Called Us EnemyStacy Smith Annenberg Inclusion Initiative researchLovecraft CountryShare your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! How do you define a "friend"? Have you ever broken up with one? Or just drifted apart? Does ghosting apply here? Realized someone that used to be a best friend no longer is? Had an unrequited friend love? Friends means a lot to us at every phase in life from the time we're wee little ones. They support us in hard times, inspire us to be better, hold us accountable, cover for us in crisis mode, share secrets and strange interests, and see us through our best and our worst. And also.. friendships change. As we become adults, our priorities shift, we relocate, we gain new interests, meet new people. Making and maintaining meaningful friendships remains just as important to our well-being, but our connections evolve. To discuss one complex topic, Minji sits down with her friend, creative producer and alternative rapper Dan Matthews. Their friendship started and deepened over the years through collaborative projects in their community and then with intentional heart to hearts. In this open conversation, Dan breaks down his views on how people can fall under different categories of friend intimacy, and even how to deal with drifting apart over time and straight incompatibility. If there's anything that 2020 has taught us thus far, it's that health is wealth, tomorrow is not guaranteed, community and connection keep us afloat, and there are crucial issues that require our humanity's conscious attention and action. Even for those who have been aware and passionate about activism, representation, and civic participation prior to 2020, this year is undeniably significant. Time feels both endless and fleeting, our energy is zapped, our nerves fragile, and stakes for both society and the planet are high. In this episode, Minji sits down with Commissioner & contributing #HateIsAVirus host Sam Hyun to talk about why and how this generational & global rally for action matters so much. They dive into their backgrounds, the importance of the 2020 Census + voting, and how Sam found his passion for politics through the inspiring bad@$$ leaders before him, including his strong Korean American mother. Sam sheds light on how embracing our identities can help us understand how our voices matter in big and small ways. We can take space, exercise our power, hold leaders accountable, demand better, take responsibility for our communities, become leaders and reimagine a better future.  This one goes out to the millennial and zoomer generations who are now in full inheritance of guarding our future. For this week's episode of Saturday School, where we're exploring Asian American interracial cinema, we have a special guest: Josslyn Luckett, assistant professor of cinema studies at New York University! We've invited her to our podcast to tell us about her research, which explores the beginnings of an affirmative action initiative at UCLA's film school in the late 1960s and early 1970s called Ethno-Communications. Before there were organizations created to center each racial group's specific experience (some of these students branched off to create Visual Communications, which produces the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival), aspiring filmmaking students of color in L.A. studied together, ventured out into different ethnic communities together, protested injustice together, got arrested together and made films about it all together. Laura Ho's 1970 short film "Sleepwalkers" explores the headspace following an arrest for protesting on behalf of an unjustly fired Black food worker. Duane Kubo's 1975 "Cruisin' J-Town," which we covered in Season 3, ends with a cross-cultural rendition of El Teatro Campersino’s “America de los Indios.” And Alan Kondo's 1974 "...I Told You So" documents Japanese American poet Lawson Inada, who grew up in a Chicano community, was influenced by Black music and later became one of the co-editors of a 1974 anthology on Asian American literature (published by Howard University Press). Brian and I often joke that accessibility is not a requirement when it comes to the films we talk about in Saturday School. Many of these films are only available in college libraries or in the archives of Visual Communications in their Little Tokyo office in downtown Los Angeles. But even if we can't watch all of them, Josslyn wants us all to know that there is a long history of Asian American, Black, Latino American and Native American filmmakers working in solidarity to document and illuminate each others' music, poetry and struggles.

Fourteen-year-old Eleanor (ADELINA AMOSCO) is tormented at school because of the large red birthmarks across her face. Eleanor’s devoted teacher Ms. Gutierrez (KATHLEEN CHANGHO) encourages her to ignore her bullies and focus on her studies. But when things get really bad, Eleanor runs away from school to work in a restaurant run by Alex (ROD RODRIQUEZ), a grown man with whom she is having a casual affair. At home, Eleanor is raised by her grandmother (SHIRLEY CUYUGAN O’BRIEN), who dotes on her granddaughter even though she does not understand her. Eleanor prefers to be alone. At night, if she gazes at the water stains on her bedroom wall, they transform into mountains, leading into a vast, desolate landscape. In this world, Eleanor is alone and free. One day the kids start to tease Eleanor, “who’s the father?” and she discovers a baby crying alone in her dreamed landscape. When another student, Carly (VANESSA CARMONA) asks Eleanor what happened to her baby, Eleanor breaks down and attacks her. Eleanor is arrested and confined until Ms. Gutierrez is able to get her released and enrolled in a new school. Eleanor wants to succeed there, but the pressure of her impending assault trial and the increasing complexity of her life in her dreamed world may push this hope out of her reach.
