In episode 148, Miscarriage Hope Desk founder Allison Schaaf shares her experience with the adoption process. Here are some tips and considerations to keep in mind if you're thinking of adopting: 1. Find someone in your local community to talk to. Adoption laws and procedures vary by area. Ask around to find someone local to talk to if you can. 2. Domestic versus International This is a big consideration but I don't have a lot of expertise here as I've only experienced domestic adoption. 3. Who to work with You'll have to complete a home study and profile book and then work with someone, an adoption agency or consultancy or attorney, to adopt. We're working with FAC, Faithful Adoption Consultants, right now. 4. Home Study Process The entire home study process can take several months. Be prepared for a lot of paperwork and remember that this process is in place to protect children. I find that perspective helps. I try to get started right away on the more time consuming parts of the process, like the background check. Setting up a physical can also take awhile. You also need to consider that the home study paperwork needs to be completed for all adults living in the house. 5. Letters of Reference Start asking for reference letters early so people aren't rushed. 6. Profile Book This is basically a photo book showing your family. It's a way to present your family as an option to the birth mom. I recommend having a photo shoot because there are lots of specific photos required. There are photographers who specifically create profile books for adoption which can be really helpful. I recommend starting this as soon as possible because it can take awhile to get the photos back. 7. Applications After the home study, you'll fill out applications with adoption agencies. 8. Speak up If you have questions, make sure to speak up. No one else is going to make sure that you're doing everything you need to do so you have to take that on. Mother's Day can be hard after experiencing pregnancy loss. Miscarriage Hope Desk founder, Allison Schaaf, shares her thoughts on Mother's Day after miscarriage, including things you can do to prepare. Some things to consider: 1. You can always say “no”. If you're invited to an event you know will be triggering, give yourself permission to say “no”. If you feel relieved when you consider declining, it's likely the right choice. 2. Consider staying home. At many places, like churches or some restaurants, on Mother's Day, people will ask if you're a mother to give you a flower. If that will be hard for you, consider skipping that day. 3. Think about a Social Media break. There will be a lot of focus on Mother's Day on social media this week. If that will be hard for you, consider taking a digital break. 4. Rethink plans for the day. If you go out to brunch, know that the servers may ask you if you're celebrating. What can you do instead? 1. Go for a walk. This is a big one for me and my mental health. Going for a drive or taking a long shower can be therapeutic as well. 2. Make a call. Plan a call, or in-person get together, with a friend or loved one who knows what you've been through. 3. Book a massage. Consider letting the massage therapist know ahead of time that you don't wish to talk about Mother's Day. 4. Make a special meal at your house. Take this opportunity to connect with your partner and plan something special at home. 5. Reach out to someone else. If you have a friend or loved one who is also struggling with loss, consider reaching out to support them. 6. Journal or visualize. In addition to making space for your emotions, you may be in a place where you can journal and visualize about your hopes for the future. Really consider what will be best and most healing for you and do that. In episode #130, Miscarriage Hope Desk founder, Allison Schaaf shares how mantras, meditation and breath work helped her prepare for pregnancy and find peace in pregnancy after loss. Meditation - I did a lot of meditation leading up to pregnancy. Several years ago, I did a training in transcendental meditation. I go back to this specific method from time to time but also find shorter meditation pockets to be more sustainable in busy seasons. I often do only 3-5 minutes and do more when I can. I've also started incorporating Holosync meditation, which uses bilateral stimulation (linked below!) I continued using meditation during pregnancy as well, although it was harder when I had extreme morning sickness. The holosync tracks and guided meditations were more helpful for me in those times. I also have an Oura Ring that has some nice, free meditations in the app. Mantras (or Affirmations) - Mantras are huge for me during pregnancy. Our pregnancy after loss program actually includes weekly suggested mantras to try. My favorite mantra during pregnancy though is, “today, I am pregnant”. This helps me focus on the present moment. Breathwork - I find this specifically helpful when going through ultrasounds. Different breathing techniques helped me so much in the waiting room when I had anxiety before an ultrasound. I tried to always go in with a plan of some techniques I could use to help me be more positive. Books - I talk more about this in our Pregnancy After Loss program but there are actually a lot of helpful books and journals out there, they can just be hard to find. Therapy - Therapy also helped me a lot, just knowing I had a session coming up each week. There is often excitement, but also a lot of fear and anxiety. It can be hard to allow yourself to get excited, to feel that joy and hope associated with a long-awaited pregnancy. Allison has gathered all of the tools that have helped her personally navigate pregnancy after loss, as well as talked to many women from the MHD community to gain insight into what would be most helpful in this time. Through these insights, she's created the new Pregnancy After Loss program. This unique program is designed to help you have the joyful pregnancy you deserve. It includes standalone resources like “How to Go Through an Ultrasound” as well as weekly modules with things like mantras, journal prompts, questions for reflection, and resources applicable to each stage in your pregnancy journey. The program also includes encouraging videos and an incredibly supportive community. The Pregnancy After Loss program has a dedicated Facebook group where you'll be able to share both anxieties and joys of your pregnancy and seek support. Participants will also gain access to a mentorship program, where women who have been through pregnancy after miscarriage offer one-on-one support to those currently going through this journey. In episode #124, Kendra shares her personal story of loss. Before conceiving, she was told that she had low progesterone and estrogen dominance - a hormone imbalance that could result in miscarriage. With no other information or assistance offered, Kendra and her husband tried to get pregnant for 16 long months. Shortly after they finally conceived, Kendra began experiencing pain and spotting. Medical professionals advised that it could be an ectopic pregnancy, but it was too early to know for sure. It was not until after she miscarried, and then changed doctors, that Kendra regained her hope in one day becoming a mother. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and conceived her son the first month her doctor put her on Clomid. Kendra had to do a lot of her own research on this journey, and it inspired her to support others going through similar experiences. She is studying to become an integrative wellness coach, specializing in grief, miscarriage, and hormones. She is also working toward becoming a bereavement doula. We discuss coping strategies, how to advocate for yourself, and the importance of listening to your inner voice. In episode #123, Daphne shares her personal story of loss. When she miscarried 35 years ago, it was not something that anyone ever talked about. It was considered improper to mention it, and therefore no one knew you were grieving. As a result, Daphne repressed her feelings around her miscarriages for years. Ultimately, she realized that it was not healthy to repress these feelings. Talking to others is vital for processing emotions, and it is important to sit with your feelings. Forgiveness is the key to healing. We discuss what has changed over the years in terms of acceptability and expectations around discussing miscarriage. While there is certainly more openness and support available, we also discuss the ways in which things have remained the same and what more can be done. In episode #122, Amy shares her personal story of loss. She has endometriosis, and conceived her son via IVF in 2017. When she and her husband decided to conceive a sibling for their son, they experienced recurrent loss in the form of non-viable embryos and repeated implantation failure (RIF). When she did become pregnant again, Amy experienced bleeding and found out she had a subchorionic hematoma. The bleeding worsened, and she was eventually put on a modified bed rest. In episode #119 Miscarriage Hope Desk founder, Allison Schaaf, shares 5 tips on handling the holidays after miscarriage. You Are Not Alone I know I felt alone when I first experienced pregnancy loss. That's one of the reasons I started Miscarriage Hope Desk. There is comfort in the fact that you are not alone in this struggle. There is a community here to support you and you likely have people in your real life who are there to support you too. Our Stories of Hope may be a helpful resource for you if you need a reminder that you are not alone. You can also request to join our Facebook group. Get Real with Yourself I've been reading a book with daily devotionals after miscarriage. One thing it talks about is guilt. It asked the question, how to you blame yourself for losing your child? Logically, I know I'm not to blame, but that doesn't always stop the thoughts and emotions around guilt. I encourage you to take a step back and think through what might actually bother you or be uncomfortable i in the next few weeks. What is potentially going to trigger you during the holidays? Set Boundaries and Learn to Say "No Thank You" Once you've identified what might be triggering to you or what events you're actually dreading, think through how you can set boundaries this season. That might mean skipping a holiday get-together or staying in a hotel rather than with family so you have plenty of time and space to yourself. Self-Care This is so individual but make sure you're finding ways to include self-care in this busy season. I go into a lot of ideas for self-care during infertility in episode 75. I also went into self-care when you're actively going through a miscarriage in episode 78. You Are Enough Take some time to reflect on this. If you like to journal, this may be a good journal prompt. Having a mantra like this for a tough season can be really helpful. Other ideas include: I am loved. I am worthy. Find something that works for you. I hope these tips are helpful for you. We also released an episode called, "Hope for the Holidays" last year with messages from the Miscarriage Hope Desk community. This may be a good one to listen to right now. In episode #116, Tatiana shares her story of personal loss. After a healthy first pregnancy, she was surprised when something didn't feel right during her second pregnancy. After several ultrasounds, it was determined that she had a blighted ovum. With very little information about what that meant, Tatiana had to do her own research. As a mental health provider herself (a licensed marriage and family therapist), Tatiana knew to ask for support even though it was not offered or readily available. She also had to learn how to communicate with her significant other and her family during this stressful time. Her experience has propelled her to work toward getting a perinatal mental health certification, so she can help other parents process their pregnancy losses. As a result of this experience and her stress levels, Tatiana and her family needed to make drastic changes. They recently relocated, and with her decreased stress she was able to get pregnant again.
