Empowerment at the End of Life: Dying with dignity, living with choices with Guest, Vanessa Johnston

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2022 40:58

Birth and death are the bookends of life, yet we welcome one and dread the other. Why is it that birth is celebrated, but death is taboo? Since the beginning of time, women have labored and birthed at home, attended by a midwife and their female friends and kin. This camaraderie of women, once universal, was a way to provide birth support and also to pass on knowledge about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. Death and dying can be taboo topics that families tend to avoid. Then, when a loved one becomes ill, family members are emotionally unprepared on how to have delicate conversations about a person's end-of-life desires. An end-of-life doula approaches these situations with empathy, helping families come together to have open conversations and ensure that nothing is left unsaid. This provides peace for the dying patient and a sense of closure for the grieving family, which aids in their healing process.  The transition from this physical realm to the next realm is a sacred space. End-of-life doulas are a bridge to continue one's soul journey.     In this podcast, Ariela has a conversation with Vanessa Johnston, End-of-Life Doula and Owner of Denver EOL Doula, and Co-Founder/ Second Vice-President, Membership of Colorado End-of-Life Collaborative. Her mission is to empower those who are dying to experience their final milestone with dignity and grace. She seeks to provide individualized and intersectional emotional, spiritual, and informational support for people with a terminal diagnosis and their loved ones. She is a compassionate companion and provides a witness in sacred service to honor the final chapter in others' stories. In this podcast, you will discover: How to get comfortable with and talk about death and dying The importance of being an open container for your loved one's dying process and honor their journey The similarities between birth and death and how to see the dying process as a spiritual journey How to empower yourself in the phases of death, dying  How to take your power back and plan for your death even in the unknown mysteries of death and dying.

Loving your body is a spiritual journey. But for many women that have been through trauma, it is a rocky relationship that feels separated, disconnected, and discouraging. Healing the relationship with your body is an invitation to dive into the separation and finally, explore why you may have been living from the neck up most of your life, carrying around a body that may feel like unfeeling armor. There is no one way to address trauma as every person and circumstance is different. However, my next guest  Healer and author Lisa Erickson shares the unique ways women's energy bodies function in relation to their life transits and trauma, and how women can work with their chakras for healing, empowerment, and awakening.  Lisa Erickson is an energy worker specializing in women's energetics, sexual trauma healing, chakra manifestation, and kundalini awakening. She is the author of Chakra Empowerment for Women and The Art and Science of Meditation both published by Llewellyn Worldwide. At age 25, Ben Ahrens, a semi-professional surfer, became bedridden for over 3 years with Chronic Neurological Lyme Disease. Up until that time, he'd dedicated himself to living and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle as a trainer and an athlete. But despite his best efforts and conventional medical treatment, Ben found himself truly stuck – unable to get better or make a full recovery. Then he came across neuroplasticity. While attending an online class in neuroanatomy via UC Berkeley to better understand his own brain and condition, Ben was exposed to the extraordinary results that applied neuroscience or “neuroplasticity training” had demonstrated with chronic pain, physical rehab, and even immune related conditions. It was at this point that a lightbulb went off in Ben's head where he realized the brain as the “chief orchestrator” of all mental, physical, and emotional processes. Rather than seeking out further doctors to address his mysterious symptoms, Ben set out to heal himself, and equipped himself with an entirely new approach. In the years that followed, Ben sought out and consulted (and now works with) top neuroscientists and cutting edge doctors from all over the world. His eventual success with recovering his own health (Ben has remained 100% healed for over 10 years now) led him to form The Brain TrustTM which now serves as the cornerstone of re-origin. Together, they've developed a program and process capable of replicating these results at scale, for a wide range of debilitating conditions. When we think of our relationship to spirit, we tend to think of it as a one way street. We communicate with them as a pathway to receive confirmation of their presence, give us direction in our life, and comfort us in their absence on our journey in this world.  Although this is true, it isn't entirely true. In fact, the relationship between the living and the dead is really a two way street. In this talk, Healing The Dead: A Spiritual Two Way Street, given at the Colorado End of Life Collaborative, Master Healer Ariela HaLevi and Rabbi Dr. Baruch HaLevi will share ancient mystical wisdom, principles and practices of how we heal our loved one's in spirit. So often when we think of a spiritual journey, we assume it is something filled with divine grace and energetic flow and ease. At times it certainly will be, however, that is rarely the starting point. Just look to nature and the process of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to understand that transformation is not a simple and tidy process. That caterpillar is transformed through a painful and messy metamorphosis inside that chrysalis (cocoon), as it dies to what it was on its way to emerging what it was meant to be. This is how butterflies are born. This is how babies are born. This is how we are born on our spiritual journey in this life. Face the struggle, accept the messiness and embrace the process in its entirety on your spiritual journey through this life.   Watch more: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj7ZfHC9UeGXi1hzY844Kt4hY9czOxNPj

The Sound of Silence: Living with Chronic Disease and Pain.

People living with invisible illnesses have to sometimes convince others of their symptoms. People who break their arm, throw out their back, or experience another form of injury may be in rough shape, but others can see their injury and understand their limitations. But for the millions of people who are living with arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other forms of pain that are "invisible illnesses," explaining what's wrong is another side effect of their condition. Not only do you have to put up with challenging, often painful, and sometimes debilitating conditions every day, but on top of that, you may have to face skepticism from people — friends, family, and co-workers, as well as strangers — who don't understand what's wrong with you. The social isolation and challenges women face with chronic disease are not unique among people with fibromyalgia, endometriosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, or similar health issues. These conditions can be difficult to prove, and relationships are often drained and strained from living with a loved one with debilitating pain. In addition, a woman living with chronic disease is often challenged by living inside of her body. Body image struggles, eating issues, chronic hatred towards a body that doesn't feel well, and pain in general, causes a split between the body and spirit. Averi Kaplowitch, a college student in Syracuse, knows this pain well. She has spent hours, days and years sitting in her room behind closed doors, crying and feeling defeated by debilitating pain, while her friends were out playing soccer, eating pizza and living normal teenage lives. Averi has lived with pain since the age of 13, improperly diagnosed, tested and retested, and finally diagnosed with endometriosis.  In this podcast, you will learn: How to trust your body and let it guide you to the answers you need to heal A young woman's courageous story of triumph and courage and how she chooses life, even in pain How Averi's pain has also shaped who she is, matured her and helped her speak out about her pain to help others How to be your best advocate for your own health and stand in your own worthiness and truth How to support someone that is going through chronic pain and use your voice to shine a light upon the smartest part of you: your body   See Averi's article and her endo story here: https://thefitmagazine.com/2021/02/21/my-endo-story/?fbclid=IwAR368GRROm4ofXUktjuB2DyQ-mIfmfrkf75AancH1bTni1SY1gjlK06idzY   Join our Facebook community for more conversation Find Ariela and Baruch: www.mysoulcentered.org

    Lotus Transformation

The lotus is considered divine and one of nature's mystical creations, that represents the purity of the mind and soul. It defines the capacity of the soul to expand and embrace the beauty of life with a clear conscience. The lotus flower sheds its seeds and blooms at the same time. This magnificent flower emerges from the dirty and unclean bottom of a pond, but still remains untouched and unstained by the dirt and mud surrounding it in the pond. This unique quality of the flower is believed to represent pure spirit, rebirth, beauty, fertility, transcendence, and resurrection. The lotus bud is compared with a folded heart or soul, which has the ability to blossom or awaken to realize the divine truth. This symbolizes the journey from the darkness of ignorance to the light or spiritual illumination. The lotus journey can also be equated to sisterhood and supporting each other on our spiritual journeys, whether they are within our own bodies, or even out in the world.   My next guest, Christine Winebrenner Irick, knows the lotus journey, and has experienced the lotus transformation within her own soul as well as leading women in their own journeys around the globe.  I am so excited to share with you Chrisitne's unique journey and how she came to connect communities of women and scattered around the world.    In this podcast you will learn: The beauty of taking a journey both inside and outside of yourself  Everyday tips and tools to journey in the comfort of your own home and space How to trust in the inner voice that calls you to do brave things Find your purpose even in difficult times How to become the beautiful lotus flower that thrives in the muck and mud of life How to pivot when life brings you to your knees and create different versions of your dreams   Christine Winebrenner Irick is the Founder of Lotus Sojourns and Host of Soul of Travel Podcast.  Christine creates and guides transformational journeys for her travel company Lotus Sojourns.  She is a natural connector and is dedicated to creating space for women to authentically connect around the world.  Christine wants each woman to embrace their purpose and know themselves and valuable and equal members of this global community.  You can also hear her celebrate impactful work throughout the tourism industry on her Soul of Travel podcast, now in its second season, which honors Voices of Women.  She also works to empower women in partnership with Threads Worldwide, a fair trade jewelry company and recently launched Lotus CommuniTees, a brand that gives back to the communities and organization she connects with on Sojourns who have been impacted by the loss of travel and economic burdens related to the Covid-19 pandemic.   Christine can be reached at:  IG: @lotussojourns // @souloftravelpodcast FB:  @lotussojourns // @souloftravelpodcast LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinefounderlotussojourns/ Website: www.lotussojourns.com Podcast: www.soul-of-travel.buzzsprout.com - Join our Facebook community for more conversation Find Ariela and Baruch: www.mysoulcentered.org
