This week I discuss my thoughts on getting abs and decreasing inches around your waist! These tips are from my personal experience and my work with my clients. I think it's important to understand your body composition with a Dexa scan and to track calories for a week to understand your daily habits. Then I would focus on starting something and stopping something that is not serving your health. Here are a few ideas: - Avoid snacking - Stop eating 3-4 hours before bed - Cook for yourself or your family (80% of the time) - Avoid or limit alcohol - Build muscle to become more insulin sensitiveSo pick one of these and focus on it until it becomes a habit! When you have 7 mouths to feed, thinking about food is a full-time endeavor. Even though it's a big part of my career, making from-scratch sauces and foraging for ingredients is not part of my daily routine – especially with voracious teenagers and athletes in the family. Forget about 30-minute meals. When they start circling the kitchen like a pack of wolves, I've got 10 minutes tops before they start bearing their canines. In this episode, we explore why weight gain around the midsection is so common during menopause and some tips on what to do about it. This is not about body shaming, and I encourage you to have a healthy body image and to love your body regardless of perceived imperfections. However, weight gain, particularly around the belly, is a very common struggle during perimenopause and something I get asked about a lot, so I wanted to share some information. Abdominal fat can also mean that fat is stored around your organs which can have health consequences such as cardiovascular disease. So my hope for you is both that you are happy and comfortable in your body and also that you are at a healthy weight without health risks. This week I discuss a 1 month study that compares the effects of ultra processed foods vs. unprocessed foods on calorie consumption, weight loss/gain, fat mass...etc. Each subject followed an ultra-processed diet for 2 weeks & a non-processed diet for 2 weeks. Menus rotated on a 7-day schedule, and the meals were designed to be well matched across diets for total calories, energy density, macronutrients, fiber, sugars, and sodium, but widely differing in the percentage of calories derived from ultra-processed versus unprocessed foods. One main question was would the subjects eat more food during their meals & more snacks if their foods were highly processed. The answer was YES!On the processed diet, the subjects ate ~500 calories more/day compared to the unprocessed diet. They gained ~2 pounds on the highly processed food diet, & lost ~2 pounds on the non-processed food diet. Body fat mass increased by 1lb during the ultra-processed diet and decreased by 1lb during the unprocessed diet.The takeaway message from the study is that if you eat highly processed foods, you'll likely ingest more total calories & gain weight. Alcohol offers a mixed legacy to our society, having long been used in a broad range of social, cultural and religious contexts. But even though Australia has seen a general reduction in alcohol consumption, it still contributes to a significant amount of disease as reported by the World Health Organization. And that's due to the active ingredient found in alcoholic beverages - a simple molecule called ethanol. This molecule affects the body in many different ways.
