Episode 16: Mythomania

The word liar is used to label people and to signal to others that someone is not to be trusted and this word is thrown around at the drop of a hat. It is hard for someone to get back into good graces when they have been deemed to be a liar and it is even harder if they have been deemed to be a pathological liar. However, what even is a pathological liar and what causes someone to partake in this antisocial behavior? Generally, pathological lying is the symptom of some other condition which causes a person's perceptions or reality to be so warped that they do not have the same understanding of the world around them that a cognitively normal person would have. This causes them to speak about memories and current events in ways that are demonstrably false as if it is the truth. It is very rare for a person to just be lying for the fun of it, however, those are the people who are most often portrayed by popular culture. In fact, many times these characters are portrayed as the anti-hero protagonist of the story. We also draw parallels to the now widely circulated new story involving Jussie Smollett. This case has drawn a lot of criticism as a cut and dry story involving a famous pathological liar. It causes us to visit our human nature to hold others to levels of morality that we would never hold ourselves to and discuss some examples of studies that show our mind and lie detection methods are possibly trusted more than they should be as accurate representations of the facts or how easy they are to decipher from superficial data. As always, all of this is interspersed with stories of our own run-ins with liars and some of our favorite examples of liars. In 2008 Mike Merrill decided to portion ownership of himself into 100,000 shares and sell off ownership of some of those shares. The initial shares of his "stock" were mostly purchased by friends and family with few strangers deciding to partake. Mike decided to maintain the majority of his stocks for himself but pledged them to be non-voting. From this point on he began running all major life decisions by his investors and hung his hat on the hope that these people would make decisions which best suited him in order to see their investment grow. What came next, from the outside, was a series of decisions that would lead to Mike having a lower quality of life in order to be more productive for his investors. His investors voted to have him stop sleeping at night and would have got him a vasectomy without the involvement of his now ex-girlfriend. Although shares are not as valuable as they once were, Mike has enjoyed a level of celebrity he otherwise would have been unlikely to achieve. With his newfound fame it appears his stock has attracted others who might have the end goals of making his life harder in an effort to troll him. In this episode we discuss whether or not this is a fun experience or if this is just the beginning of a bleak future where people are selling control of themselves for money. The Satanic Panic, as it is known today, centered around the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons which was released in 1974. The fear and rumors surrounding the evil nature of the game were fanned by the masses of youth that seemed unnaturally enticed by the mystical nature of the stories and lore. The timing was almost too good to be true which lent itself to a clashing of ideals between the youth trying to make their own mark on the world and the adults who were trying to reel in a world which they saw as changing for the worst. The rise of metal music, the Satanic Church, televangelists, and sham psychology caused a clash between between two worlds trying to set the future on a more desirable course. One half of the Grogtalk Podcast hosts join us in the form of James who shares with us his personal experiences with the phenomenon. Between having to balance his own understanding of what was going on and living in a world where everything he enjoyed was seemingly tainted by satanic influence, according to the media, James had some interesting insight into the situation. This episode also breaks our longstanding streak of talking about Hitler and Nazi's, however, we do get sidetracked so we still have that going for us. However, social media has resulted in some very talented displays of creativity. One such example is the twitter page, The Sun Vanished. Episode 12: Swastika Appropriation

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2019 79:34

Of course, the first symbol that comes to everyone's mind is the Swastika. Although this design is in wide use by people of the Indian peninsula for thousands of years, the entire meaning of the symbol was changed to fit the mistaken beliefs of Hitler and his Nazi party. However, this is far from the only symbol to be reused or even misinterpreted. The Ichthys was used to hide Christians from open persecution and is now worn as a badge of honor, similar to the Cross. The sign of Asclepius may have been confused with the sign of Caduceus. The All Seeing Eye was a symbol for the power of God and his omnipresence and now is used as a warning of groups which wield power for evil intents. The power symbols hold over us take us into territory covering the innate nature of humans to seek ways to control events we know we cannot. This manifests itself in numerology and superstition, among other quirks. Episode 11: Dirty Doctors

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2019 73:56

It may be hard to understand with hindsight, but for most of human history if we couldn't see something with our eyes it didn't exist. In the early 1840's, in Vienna, this worldview was put to the test when people began to notice that mortality rates during deliveries with doctors were significantly higher than with midwives in the same hospital. One doctor at this hospital, Ignaz Semmelweis, observed that the infection which had killed one of his friends after an injury was similar to the infection that most women suffered from that died as a result of childbirth in the doctor's ward. He surmised that the only way to eliminate the unseen contaminate was to remove the smell that accompanied working on dead bodies. To achieve this he required all doctors to begin washing their hands in a chlorine solution after handling dead bodies. Meanwhile, in other parts of Europe, Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister were also contributing to their own discoveries in the microscopic world of germs which would revolutionize the field of medicine. This leads to a discussion on the nature of discoveries and whether or not we should expect true revelations in fields anymore or if all advancement is incremental. As with all great discoveries we also talk about the detractors. In this case, the biggest criminal is our own human faults. Why is it that despite over 100 years of research on the matter it is still so hard to get doctors to wash their hands? As always, no episode of Smog on the Nog would be complete without a dose of meandering conversation about the scale of time, was Thanos wrong, and how many Scientologists know about Xenu.

Episode 10: SAT & IQ Tests

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2019 92:19

In 1920 Carl Brigham adapted the Army's mental test to aid the admissions process for his Alma Mater, Princeton. In the nearly 100 years since the implementation of the SAT, it has faced criticism for being unfairly biased and increasingly outdated as a methodology for testing mental ability. Carl Brigham was a noteworthy American psychologist who used his illegitimate findings to publish a book in 1924 which called for strict immigration laws and asked Americans to stop spending money to educate those who he deemed "morons and imbeciles". In 1930 Brigham retracted his statements regarding these races and admitted his findings were obtained through flawed means. However, at this point, the damage had already been done to the psyche of the global public. Despite the controversy surrounding this figure, colleges continue to accept the SAT as a legitimate benchmark for college admissions. Proponents of the test claim that the biases inherent to the initial test and creator are no longer represented and that the test remains one of the most accurate methods of testing a student's acuity. Opponents of the test argue that current trends in wealth distribution and success on the test indicate that the test is continuing to work as originally intended. In addition, recent controversies with the grading and distribution procedures have added fuel to this growing resentment of standardized college admissions testing. The discourse on this topic also led us to a conversation about nature vs nurture, the history of Nazi eugenics, and the dangers of cognitive bias. Episode 7: Illuminati Card Game

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 12, 2019 92:58

The creator of the game, Steve Jackson, referenced his inspiration for the game from a trilogy book series in the 70s called Illuminatus. He created his card game in the early 90s, and still maintains it's strictly satire. The game is most reknowned for its "predictions" on it's cards for a card depicting what looks like the Twin Towers exploding in the middle. The card is named "Terrorist Nuke". There's also a separate card with the Pentagon on fire in the middle of it. It's impressive that Steve Jackson was able to compile such a plethora of government conspiracies, basically all of them, before the days of the internet. David Icke was a big proponent of its legitimacy, stating it was "a look into the real Illuminati" For all intents and purposes, Steve Jackson comes off as a harmless nerd. He has videos from 2018 on Youtube promoting the newest expansion. (He was stormed by Secret Service right before the original game was to be released and sued them. See link.) Almost weirder, Osama Bin Laden has references to the card game in documents released by the Freedom of Information Act (see link from CIA). Osama seemed to be obsessed with any news about himself, especially ones that involve conspiracies around him. He also had videos like "Charlie Bit My Finger" and funny cat videos....as well as beheadings and hentai. China has begun "early-access" of their social credit system. If you've seen Black Mirror, the episode titled "Nosedive" is very similar to what they're implementing for their citizens. It's rumored to be mandatory by 2020. They are planning on having a 360-degree surveillance and rating system in place. Time spent on video games, making frivolous purchases, communications in text or social media. What kind of news or content you're sharing. You'll also be connected to your friends who can affect your score negatively. There's special incentives for being an early adopter. It's using the video game achievement model for controlling its citizens. People have already been banned from domestic flights within China or getting business tickets on the train based on their scores. There are incentives being suggested for having a better score to have things like free shipping or a faster internet. All good dictatorships depend on citizens snitching on each other. It's reminiscient of the US struggles with McCarthyism to spy on your neighbors to report if they were Communists. It's not that farfetched that we're in a similar situation in the US with our credit system and how much it affects your ability to do things. US citizens just happen to be more subservient to corporations, as opposed to China who is more government-based. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2018 91:48

The ESRB is not a federal entity, it's a governing body of major video game companies like EA. Is it necessary still and are we okay with them "regulating" themselves. It seems like just another gatekeeper. The catalyst in the 90s was Mortal Combat for the politicians to lobby for existence of ESRB. Arcade games like Time Crisis and House of the Dead also had a factor. The advent of 3d games made it seem more graphic because of how groundbreaking it was. There were others. Sega created The Video Game Rating Council. The gaming companies in the industry didn't trust each other to be impartial. Congress didn't think it was enough. They wanted them to come together with a unifying solution. They came up with the Entertainment Rating Software Board. Companies generally aren't good at governing themselves. How is this any different? The results: EC- Early Childhood, K-A for Kids to Adults which became E for Everyone. In 2005 they added E10+. T 13+ and M is 17+. AO Adults Only is 18+. They've been making the argument about video games corrupting the mind since the 90s, even though countless evidence shows it doesn't affect you any more than other entertainment. Although people are going to rehab for it. Most franchises nowadays capitalize on the achievement factor for people to feel accomplished. Especially when wins are more and more rare like in PUBG or Fortnite. Quite the dopamine dump! Mortal combat deserves credit for starting the outrage, and still keeping with it and not backing down to this point. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony refuse to allow AO, so retailers don't stock it either. Twitch bans any streams of AO. Big Chungus, an AO game, came out in 2018 for extremely detailed violence and sex. He's a big, fat Easter Bunny doppelganger. After brutally murdering Dante from Devil May Cry, he has "animalistic sex with the corpses". There's a sidequest to snort the largest line of cocaine. Playboy video games were popular too as AO games. Was this the millenial version of Faces of Death and your friend's Playboy under the bed? Rockstar made their name off controversial content that pushed the envelope Grand Theft Auto jumpstarted a lot of the regulation. They had a 'Hot Coffee' mod that was originally going to be part of GTA San Andreas (2004). It allowed you to have full on sex in the game with a character who invited you in for coffee. It was a minigame using the same controls for dancing. The rating board denied it being anything but AO rated. They couldn't remove it completely since they were so close to the launch date, so they hid it in the code by encrypting it and releasing it on console. They created a port for the PC eventually and the same day it came out, gamers cracked the code to make it playable and releasing mods for it. Senator Hillary Clinton pushed for new regulations be put on video games sales. In New York, a class action lawsuit was filed by an 85 year old grandma who purchased the game for her 14 year old grandson. GTA ended up losing upwards of a million dollars to the National PTA and the ESRB. In December 2005, Senators Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman and Evan Bayh introduced the Family Entertainment Protection Act, which called for a federal mandate enforcement of the ESRB ratings system in order to protect children from inappropriate content. A patch for the original version of the game, Cold Coffee, was designed to counter edit the script and disable the mini-game and crash the game if one attempts to access it. GTA IV was released in 2008. In Liberty City, they got revenge by making the Statue of Liberty as Hillary Clinton with a hot coffee in her hand. Data Mining is still done today by code-savvy players to see unreleased content embedded within the game code for future release. It's reminiscient of the old days of having to buy Pokemon books and the rumors about getting Mew. A rumor that took almost a decade to figure out how to do the glitch to get Mew. The biggest companies are the ones that have to carry the torch in terms of freedom of content and expression. The crusade isn't as much on violence anymore. There's more of an argument for regulation if it gets too realistic in terms of the future and VR. Mobile gaming- pubg runs better on the console and new Diablo. Mobile is better for user criticism to their user base and making fixes for them. EveryonesBattlefield, Battlefield 5 Using the largest gaming franchises to push their own agenda ESA was original ratings company before the ESRB and now they run E3. How many missteps is the consumer going to allow EA to have before people vote with their dollar? There's a big movement for small and indie gaming companies, but they can't compete with their infrastructure until a AAA company steps in. PUBG is a perfect example for a great concept that people are waiting for a major company to build off like with the newest Call of Duty. No Russian level in Modern Warefare 2.
