Over the past 15 years, Keith Schumacher has become recognized as one of the leading voices in father engagement in American schools. Keith did not enter the educational arena as a teacher or principal, he came in as a dad. The husband of a teacher and the father of two adopted daughters, he quickly recognized the absence of other dads participating in the local school. He also noticed that there were few if any male role models even among school staff members for the students. After initially being turned away from the PTA, he learned about the Watch D.O.G.S. program and proposed it to the principal of his local school. In addition to his role as a senior captain with the Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department, he quickly became a leader in father engagement at the local, and then state and national level. He served for ten years as a National Family and Community Engagement Coordinator with the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) organization. Upon his retirement from Atlanta Fire-Rescue in 2019, he began serving full-time with the national All Pro Dad Chapters program and has done so for four and a half years. In these roles, Keith has spoken at hundreds of state and national conferences including the American Association of School Administrators, National PTA, American School Counselors Association and the National Association for Family, School and Community Engagement. Keith has literally worked with hundreds of local schools and school districts in overcoming the traditional stereotypes of fathers and perceived their lack of engagement in local schools. Keith is working to create a culture and environment in which schools provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where fathers regularly engage and participate in the daily activities in local schools. This includes supporting students who do not have an easily recognizable father figure in their life for whatever reason. As a national leader, Keith's goal is to give every child an opportunity to have strong positive role models leading them to the greatest success possible.

Kim Allman from NortonLifeLock, and Carrie Neil from the National PTA, sit down with Dave to discuss the Smart Talk 2.0 tool. Joe and Dave share some follow up on an exciting new position Joe has accepted as the Director of Cyber Science at a company called Harbor Labs. This week, Joe's story comes from listener Beau, who writes in about an ATM scam he fell victim to, sharing how the scammers were spamming his phone with texts, emails, and calls before he figured out what was going on. Dave's story follows the growing new trend of overworking, or having two remote jobs at once and working at both. One company's CEO calls it a form of theft and deception. Our catch of the day comes from listener Rodney who writes in, sharing about his son's girlfriend who is looking for work and received an email pointing her in the direction of a new prospect. Sadly, Rodney had to share the news that the email seemed to be a scam. Louisville, Kentucky -- This is an edited-down-to-49-minutes version of the actual meeting that took place in PTA President Heather Wampler's basement on March 5, 2017 where myriad "causes" were manufactured and presented until there was enough "evidence" to justify removing a concerned JCPS advocate from the district's PTA board. In 2019, these same individuals rigged their elections so that she and other moms did not stand a snowball's chance at holding a seat on the board. National PTA was notified of these offenses, and they referred us to Kentucky PTA, which was run by the same handful of individuals, including Eddie Squires (current district PTA president and former KY PTA president), Sharon Whitworth (former JCPS employee), Autumn Neagle (former district PTA President), and Cherie Dimar (former President of both entities). JCPS district leaders were also notified on several occasions, and they did nothing, and in some cases denied it was happening. All documentation to these allegations will be posted on our website at www.dearjcps.com/audio-archives.

Hello everyone! If you have been following me AT ALL on social media, you know I talk about change a lot. Not just change I think should occur in the school system, but changes other people believe should occur as well. But one aspect I have struggled with is how to make change happen at all. Sometimes, it feels like the system of public education is too big to change in any meaningful way… And yet, Suzanne DeMallie made significant change by being an advocate and educator, and now she is pushing for us to continue talking about change and taking action to do so. Last week, we dove into the overview of what change can look like, and in this episode we dive into the steps it takes to make change happen at various levels. Suzanne DeMallie taught for seven years in the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Research into her own son’s learning difficulties led her to author the Classroom Auditory Learning Issues resolution, adopted by the National PTA in July 2007. Her work has appeared in Our Children Magazine, T.H.E. Journal, Towson Times, and The Baltimore Sun. She has presented at the National School Boards Association’s Annual Convention; to national, state, and local PTA groups, and to politicians. Suzanne was awarded the National PTA’s Life Achievement Award in May 2007, the highest honor from the nation’s largest child advocacy organization. This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Writing Unbound: How Fiction Transforms Student Writers by Thomas Newkirk. Writing Unbound is about the value of writing fiction in secondary classrooms. Tom Newkirk asks a tough question: if reading fiction is the center of most English classrooms, why is writing fiction often ignored? Why do we separate fiction reading and fiction writing? Tom argues that when our writing curriculum is too analytical, students think of “writing” as impersonal, formulaic, and…well…boring. He says that opening a door to fiction writing can ignite students’ interest and convince them of the value of writing. He even argues that allowing kids to write fiction will improve their analytic writing. Learn more about how fiction can transform student writers. Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Suzanne DeMallie has been striving to make a difference in education since 2005. Her book Can You Hear Me Now? walks parents and teachers through everything they need to know to make a difference in their local district and beyond, from the most basic questions they should be asking to the most effective steps they can take to make their voices heard. As a parent, Suzanne DeMallie fought a nationwide battle against bureaucracy for the simple, common sense idea that children in the back of a classroom should be able to hear their teacher. Suzanne taught for seven years in the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Research into her own son’s learning difficulties led her to author the Classroom Auditory Learning Issues resolution, adopted by the National PTA in July 2007. Leslie Boggs is the 56th president of National PTA, the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy association. One other mention for Leslie is her priorities that are now more important than ever - As PTA president, Boggs is a huge advocate for more funding for mental health access for students and has pushed for more funding for public schools and to strengthen family engagement for all children. Two things that our schools desperately need right now and in the very near future to recover from this pandemic.

Many people have asked me, “Is the https://3-in-30-podcast.myshopify.com/ (Flecks of Gold Journal) good for moms of older children and teenagers too?” YES! This journal is for any mom who wants to focus on the JOY in her daily and relationships, no matter how old her children are! The “flecks” you write down will be very different if you have teenagers instead of toddlers, but those golden moments are still there. And especially if you are going through a bit of rocky time with your teenager, it might be all the more important to notice those Flecks of Gold...or as my guest, https://www.instagram.com/sarenloosli/?hl=en (Saren Eyre Loosli), and I discuss in today’s episode, create them. You might recognize Saren’s name from other episodes of 3 in 30–that’s because she has been a mentor of mine for almost ten years and has deeply impacted my motherhood. Saren co-founded the website Power of Moms with April Perry, and I was a writer and editor there for many years before I started 3 in 30. Saren is the one who gave me the advice that is at the heart of the Flecks of Gold journal and that I’ve mentioned on the show before, “In motherhood, the hard moments sometimes outnumber the beautiful moments; but the beautiful moments always outweigh the hard moments.” Listen in for my discussion with her about how we can continue to focus on the beautiful moments in motherhood even as our children become teenagers! Three Takeaways Continue to prioritize tuck-in time with your teenagers. This can be as simple as going in to give them a quick kiss and compliment at the end of the day. Respect and get excited about their abilities and interests. Let them coach and teach you for once, and it might lead to really beautiful moments of connection. Talk less, hug more. Let your teens feel their big emotions. Try not to lecture them or use to many words when they are upset...just give them a little physical connection which will hopefully lead to more emotional connection. *** Show Notes Saren’s website: https://poweroffamilies.com/ (PowerofFamilies.com) https://www.instagram.com/power_of_families/?hl=en (Power of Families' Instagram) https://poweroffamilies.com/radio/ (Power of Families' Podcast) *** Many thanks to our sponsors! https://www.pta.org/center-for-family-engagement/notes-from-the-backpack (Notes from the Backpack Podcast,) hosted by the National PTA.
