Scripture: Luke 4:1-13 When Jesus is tempted in the desert, Satan offers Jesus power over all of the world, which Satan has been given, if Jesus will just worship Satan. (Luke 4:6) God has handed over the powers of this world to a cosmic being called Satan. We may wonder why God allows this arrangement. The answer seems to be that people wanted it. We want human rulers: kings and presidents, caesars and judges to set up systems of government that assert that power over us. This is actually one of the many catastrophes we learn about in ancient Israel's history. God's people want a king like all the other nations around them. And immediately God tells them what terrible things will come of this, as we read about in 1 Samuel 8:4-22. During Lent we are turning to repentance. Here before God and one another we remember that one way we stray from God is that we look for shortcuts to the kingdom of God. The reign of God can't be forced upon us. It is a covenant built on consent; it can't be mandated. It has to be chosen and nurtured. There are no shortcuts to the kingdom of God, but what we need is already here.

Say Goodbye to the Paper SAT Test with David Blobaum

It's the end of an era for standardized testing. For the past 90 years, students have taken their SATs in a pencil-to-paper format. However, as ACT and SAT expert David Blobaum shares, 2023 is the final year of the paper SAT.  In March 2024, the SAT will be an all-digital test and it will become adaptive. David explains what a digital-adaptive test is and gives advice for how your teen can best adapt to this change.EPISODE NOTESWe'll soon say goodbye to the paper SAT. Yes, you heard me correctly. 2023 is the last year of the paper SAT. The first 2024 test on March 9 will be a fully-digital test. And I'm sure you're already wondering, what does this mean to your teen's college-bound journey? David Blobaum is a graduate of the University of Chicago and co-founder of Summit prep; his expertise is in college entrance testing. In addition to being a digital test, the SAT will be adaptive to your teen. Each student will have the same first verbal section. Then, depending on your teen's performance in that section, the next section will adapt based on ability. The same is true for the math portion. The good news is this means a shorter test moving from the current three-hour test to only two hours which is a win for students. Unfortunately with any change in the middle of an academic year, the high school class of 2025, current sophomores, are caught in the crosshairs of change and will have to plan strategically. David recommends if your teen will be a junior in the 2023-24 school year and want to take the SAT instead of the ACT they should complete SAT testing by the end of 2023.  David does give some encouragement with the fact that for students doing SAT prep, the content of what is tested will remain very similar to the paper version; the major difference is the reading portion. If your teen has not completed algebra 2 before the junior year, David suggests considering the ACT instead of the SAT. One issue with the new SAT is there will be a shortage of materials to use when preparing and practicing for the SAT while the ACT has a lot of practice material available. Will change be good? Time will tell and it will be a while before we know. In the meantime, college-bound families are encouraged to think strategically and plan ahead. Covid brought about the rapid growth of SAT and ACT test-optional for college admissions, which has been great for some students. As we move past Covid, should your teen be taking the tests now? My friend Brooke Hanson from Supertutor Media Inc and SupertutorTV says in most cases yes! In this episode she shares the data to demonstrate that among top selective colleges they are accepting more students who took a test, even when those schools loudly claim to be test-optional. Listen to the episode for the inside scoop on why this once test optional supporter has reconsidered the value of testing. Her students will be taking the test and you may just discover your teen should too. EPISODE NOTESSupertutorTV's Brooke Hanson has been a supporter of test-optional for many years, but recently changed her mind based on data discovered from school admissions reports and her own belief in the positive mindset shift that comes from test prep and testing. There are some high school students for whom testing will always be difficult, but she still encourages taking the tests for a number of reasons. Many teens were off the hook during the pandemic because testing centers were closed, yet a growing number of schools are requiring tests again.First there are also data-driven reasons for testing. Did you know even some test-blind schools, those which wouldn't normally look at anyone's results, will factor in scores if you were in the top 50% of applicants? Many colleges that say they are test-optional are providing an admission advantage to those with test scores. I had a  previous student who unscientifically surveyed her peers in her Honors College and couldn't find a single admitted student who applied without ACT or SAT scores at her test optional college.Brooke gives a good reminder to consider your teen's mindset. If a particular minority group performs poorly on a test, the problem must be the test. That is the position of the University of California. It will no longer accept SAT results in the name of “equity,” aka “affirmative action.” In so doing the University elites are ignoring that California voters just voted in November to maintain a ban on affirmative action. We talk to the man behind the ban, former University board member and author of “Beyond Skin Color to the Content of Our Character” Ward Connerly, who happens to be African American and grew up in the South in the 1940s. It is not a fun conversation to have, nor is it news that anyone is eager to face.  To address the questions around the actual admissions process, the role of diversity recruiting and the impact of covid-19 on the future incoming classes, we will hear from Ms. Kim Holley, senior director of admissions at Appalachian State University.  For Kim, being strategic throughout her own education experience, prepared her well to school us on the college admissions process considerations for Black girls.

This is a powerful conversation on the importance of resilience, faith, dedication, and above all hard work. He is the founder/CEO of Prep Expert, winner of a $250K Shark Tank deal with billionaire Mark Cuban, a bestselling author of numerous books, received his MBA from Yale and MD at USC, is currently a dermatology resident physician at Temple University and was recently named Inc. 30 Under 30 for 2019. Shaan is a first-generation Indian-American whose parents immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1980s. He grew up in “seedy part” of Las Vegas in his parent’s budget motel, attended inner-city public schools in the worst school district in the nation (40% drop out rate), and was clueless about standardized tests. After spending hundreds of hours studying for the SAT he was able to raise his score from average to perfect - a feat achieved by only 0.02% of all high school students. His life completely changed because of this, he was admitted into prestigious universities, received $250 million in scholarships and even met the President.  This pivotal moment helped Shaan create Prep Expert, a 6-week course to help high school students achieve and have control over their own dreams. Prep Expert is the nation’s fastest growing test preparation provider, because as Shaan says “if you change your scores, you can change your life.”  Resources:

In 1920 Carl Brigham adapted the Army's mental test to aid the admissions process for his Alma Mater, Princeton. In the nearly 100 years since the implementation of the SAT, it has faced criticism for being unfairly biased and increasingly outdated as a methodology for testing mental ability. Carl Brigham was a noteworthy American psychologist who used his illegitimate findings to publish a book in 1924 which called for strict immigration laws and asked Americans to stop spending money to educate those who he deemed "morons and imbeciles". In 1930 Brigham retracted his statements regarding these races and admitted his findings were obtained through flawed means. However, at this point, the damage had already been done to the psyche of the global public. Despite the controversy surrounding this figure, colleges continue to accept the SAT as a legitimate benchmark for college admissions. Proponents of the test claim that the biases inherent to the initial test and creator are no longer represented and that the test remains one of the most accurate methods of testing a student's acuity. Opponents of the test argue that current trends in wealth distribution and success on the test indicate that the test is continuing to work as originally intended. In addition, recent controversies with the grading and distribution procedures have added fuel to this growing resentment of standardized college admissions testing. The discourse on this topic also led us to a conversation about nature vs nurture, the history of Nazi eugenics, and the dangers of cognitive bias. For decades the SAT has served as THE doorway that all students have to successfully pass through if they have any hopes of being accepted by reputable colleges. But today the test has been dramatically changed to the point that it is generally not demonstrating the true academic ability of students, especially those in classical Christian schools. Given the 'dumbing down' of the test, many students are now getting the highest scores possible and colleges are quickly finding the SAT to be less of an indicator of ability. Enter Jeremy Tate, a former college admissions, test prep consultant, and counselor who was so alarmed by the changing SAT that he crafted the Classic Learning Test (CLT) as a means of restoring the foundations of Western education. And best of all… colleges are welcoming students who submit this new test with their applications!
