Author and musician Daniel Rachel has written a new, disturbing and quite overdue book, "This Ain't Rock ‘n' Roll: Pop Music, the Swastika and the Third Reich." And I interviewed him about it for my podcast.  The book documents something that has been hiding in plain sight for more than 60 years. As Rachel writes: For over seventy-five years, musicians have been drawn to the language and provocative imagery of Nazism, fascinated by its power, menace and underlying sexuality. They have flirted with the theatrical spectacle of the Third Reich, displayed the swastika, flaunted memorabilia, worn Nazi uniforms and marveled at the grandiose rallies of 1930s Germany. Decades ago, Woody Guthrie had a guitar with the words inscribed on it: "This machine kills fascists." We never thought that future rock stars might have guitars that could say they celebrate fascists. He's written some fantastic books like Isle of Noise (about UK songwriters) and The Lost Album of The Beatles. His latest release may be his most controversial. There are some connections you've probably heard of, like Jimmy Page and Lemmy. But there are others that you might not be aware of, like The Human League and Nick Cave. Daniel and I talk through how the British, especially in the 60's and 70's, used symbols as a way of mocking Nazi-ism. We also talk about a seeming resurgence in the symbolism, particularly through artists like Kanye West.  The book gives facts and tells stories. On the evening of December 14, 2025—the first night of Hanukkah—Rabbi Benjamin Elton was driving home from performing a wedding, looking forward to lighting candles with his family. Then his phone began to explode with messages. There were gunmen at Bondi Beach. His wife and children were in lockdown at a nearby event. Names of the dead were coming through—colleagues, community members. For several terrible minutes, he couldn't reach his wife. And he wondered whether he was going to come home to find that he had lost his family. By the time the shooting stopped, fifteen people were dead, among them two rabbis, an eighty-seven-year-old Holocaust survivor, and a ten-year-old girl. They had been gunned down at a public Hanukkah celebration on one of Australia's most iconic beaches, before a large crowd of Jews who had gathered to light the menorah in the open air—because that's what confident, integrated diaspora communities do. The massacre at Bondi Beach was the culmination of two years of escalating anti-Semitism that the community had been warning about since October 7. Synagogues firebombed with congregants inside. Cars set ablaze in Jewish neighborhoods. Swastikas painted on schools and daycares. Weekly pro-Palestinian marches past synagogues every week, with chants of "globalize the intifada." A van discovered full of explosives along with a list of the addresses of Jewish institutions. And through it all, a government that offered sympathy and money for security, but never quite confronted the deeper problem. Until, finally, the community's darkest warnings came true. Rabbi Benjamin Elton is the chief minister of the Great Synagogue in Sydney—Australia's oldest Jewish congregation, founded in the 1820s, whose pulpit has traditionally made its occupant a primary representative of Judaism to the wider society. He holds a PhD in Jewish history from the University of London, and before entering the rabbinate, he worked in Britain's Ministry of Justice. He is a scholar of Anglo-Jewish history, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a Sacks scholar, and, just over a decade ago, spent a year in residence as a fellow at Tikvah. This week, Rabbi Elton has been burying his friends. He joined Jonathan Silver, the editor of Mosaic, to discuss the recent trials of his family and community, and the growing threat to Australian Jewish security.

Today's Headlines: President Trump finally announced that he signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act — though we still haven't actually seen the signature. AG Pam Bondi now has 30 days to release the files. Then, in true Trump escalation fashion, he hopped back online to call for the arrest and death penalty for several Democratic lawmakers — all military or intel veterans — after they released a video reminding service members not to follow illegal orders. Trump labeled it “seditious behavior, punishable by death!” The White House later tried to clean it up, insisting Trump does not want to execute Democrats. Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard quietly rewrote its policies so that swastikas, nooses, and Confederate flags are no longer “hate symbols” but merely “potentially divisive.” Nothing says troop readiness like officially pretending racism is a quirky personality trait. In New York, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is meeting Trump at the White House today — a meeting Mamdani's team requested, even as Trump is withholding $18 billion in federal funding for NYC infrastructure. Immigration crackdowns continue: A federal judge ruled Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to D.C. illegal — though the ruling is paused for 21 days so the administration can appeal. Meanwhile, the immigration sweep in North Carolina wrapped up with over 250 arrests, and the next wave of 250 federal agents is headed for New Orleans. The Department of Education also dropped its new student loan rules, recategorizing a bunch of very real, very necessary professions — nursing, social work, counseling, cybersecurity, engineering, OT, PA, teaching — as not professional degrees. The result, lower lifetime borrowing caps for the people we literally need the most. And lastly, the CDC's vaccine safety page has now been rewritten to align with RFK Jr.'s long-debunked conspiracy theories about vaccines and autism. Science is cancelled, apparently. Author and Ayurvedic practitioner Heather Grzych explores the tragic and complex history of the swastika — a sacred symbol of well-being and auspiciousness in Indian traditions that was later twisted by the Nazis into one of the most feared emblems of hatred in modern history. The story of a young man who dressed as an SS officer for Halloween, and was assaulted, is the pulse of our society. In a time where a man can dress as a psychopath or murderer, a woman as a degenerate whore, an historical costume of fine detail is rejected with violence by mobs of hysterical, brain dead drones. Worse still, the man was charged with assault despite the woman he supposedly assaulted assaulting him on camera - itself part of another issue that involves double standards for men and women in society. It shows the acceptability of violence if it is considered justified and the violence against men if the same is considered justified. Hindu and Buddhist swastikas, or the Manji, are treated in like manner by ignorance. Otherwise, it's perfectly acceptable to wave flags with a hammer and sickle that represent an ideology that not only killed hundreds of millions of people in the 20th century alone, but that is making a resurgence today with terrifying numbers of people demanding its implementation. Furthermore, these things have been blamed somehow on Islam when its founders were actually close to being exclusively Jewish. Similar reactions of screaming and curses can be found on the religious right when confronted by witch costumes. What is happening here if not the reactions of cult adherents?
