Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Far Cry 2. We talk about some more systems in the game as we plan to play the descended versions and present our takeaways next week. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Midpoint (Brett) and more (Tim) Issues covered: gun loot and such in the ongoing series, the elimination of friction, putting the objective marker far from the quest giver, the efficiency of taking out a checkpoint, intrinsic rewards vs other intrinsic rewards, the gun aspects, everything being diagetic, driving with the map in your lap, everything is entropic including you, consistency of vision, cars and physics, the pinging audio in a Datsun-like car, putting the systems in the game, the length of system loops, wanting degradation/negative feedback to be because of something you did, forcing dramatic moments, the distinction of player initiation, malaria mechanics, progressing the game, pressures on the player for styles of play, being trained by faction gameplay, living your best murderous life, "No Russian," feeling black and white about the Jackal, a bold commitment to a backdrop, mad libbing the missions, a game meant to be played once, endangering your experience, everything is may-mays, early dynamic storytelling, slurs about the player, being edgy and gritty, not being able to feel the impact, thinness of representation, the limit of lived experiences, the messaging around Mass Effect, feeling too derivative, sci-fi soup, lack of ideology/motivation, resonating with the structure, player insertion, lack of narrowing of options, the series of grey decisions, being able to identify a franchise from just one scene. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Ghost Recon (series), Diablo, System Shock 2, Fallout (series), Breath of the Wild, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Reed Knight, Tim Ramsay, Republic Commando, The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger, Call of Duty (obliquely), Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now, Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, The Witcher, Patrick Redding, Skyrim, The Walking Dead, Sean Vanaman, Jake Rodkin, The Lord of the Rings, Ian McKellen, Rocksteady, Arkham (series), Papers Please, Lucas Pope, Return of the Obra-Dinn, Dark Souls, The Honorable T. H. Isismyre Alname, Mass Effect, KotOR, Bioware, Star Wars, Star Trek, Jeff Cannata, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Ukraine yesterday in what will be one of his last official engagements in office. He called upon the UK and the rest of Europe to endure the current energy emergency to defeat Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who is using his country's gas reserves as a weapon of war. The man who is tipped to be the new Chancellor of the Exchequer should Liz Truss win the Conservative Party leadership contest, current Business Secretary Kwasi Karteng, has been holding talks with energy sector bosses to find a solution to the rising cost of energy, in particular the wholesale price of gas. One solution that has been suggested has been a freeze being placed on the energy cap for two years. The plan which has been put forward by the CEO of Scottish Power would cost up to £100 billion over the twenty-four-month period. The plan involves government guarantees for loans that would enable energy companies to borrow from commercial lenders at competitive rates to buy gas from suppliers at the historically inflated cost without having to pass on the cost to consumers. The so-called deficit fund would help both the cost-of-living crisis and the continued rise in inflation that was tipped to reach 18% earlier this week.

Technology correspondent Bill Bennett joins Lynn to look at why there appears to have been a lack of cyber-attacks during Russia's month-long war with Ukraine. He says, in reality, there IS a cyber-war going on but it's very much behind the scenes and doesn't affect New Zealand. It's a year since Australia introduced laws to make tech giants pay for the news they display - how has it gone? And why are Meta (formerly Facebook) employees running for the door? It's not because they've had an attack of conscience about what the social media giant has been up to.

We have learned nothing from the "freedom fries" movement. Yet again, we're seeing a performative movement to rename or destroy drinks/products/foods etc. to...somehow...support Ukraine's defense against Russian invasion. Learn why that does nothing but make you feel like you've done something (all while doing absolutely nothing). Then, AMC is bumping up prices for their blockbusters. Is it a smart business move or a sneaky way to recoup the money lost since 2020? Finally, we talk Horizon Forbidden West, sequel to the incredible first entry of now-franchise, Horizon Zero Dawn. Does it improve enough to warrant a buy? Well, with Elden Ring out now as well (and receiving an incredibly positive critical reception), you may have to pick the open world that most fits your fancy. *Beer of the Week* Schneider-Weisse Aventinus Weizen-Dopplebock
It's hard to believe we are still watching the war raging between Russia and Ukraine unfold in front of us.It feels desperate and helpless, and almost perverse to watch this play out while we can do so little about it.It's utterly heartbreaking. But also heartbreaking is the fact ignorant New Zealanders are deciding now's the time to attack Russians living here.I cannot believe that people think this has anything to do with them – just because they are Russian. It's abominable.I was horrified to read a headline at the weekend that said “Russian Kiwis in Auckland say they're encountering abuse and harassment in the wake of the invasion”. The report says they're feeling excluded like they should hide their nationality, their children are getting bullied at school. As one of the Russian Kiwi Mums said, “The war is not about us, we are just normal people who live in New Zealand and pay taxes.”A Russian Church was vandalised, as well as a shop selling Russian goods. These are senseless ignorant acts done by people who clearly have no compassion and no understanding of what is actually going on here. No Russian born person is responsible for the acts of a crazy leader. It defies logic that the insane actions of a monster on the other side of the world should be blamed on Russians who've made New Zealand their home.It is also not a time for further division and attack, but a time to surely promote peace and show love.I always feel embarrassed when I see racism here, it's not who we should be, and there should be no place for it at all.I spoke with the Race Relations Commissioner last week who was concerned about this very thing happening, he described it as a “few naughty people” who would undertake racist acts like this. But it's an attitude, it's a bubbling undercurrent of ignorance which we should all be working hard to extinguish. As if the world isn't a tough enough place these days, why would we turn on our fellow Kiwis just because of their accent or where they were born? The other heartbreak at the moment is watching Zelensky's cries for help go unanswered. He says the world ‘must not watch, but help'. He wanted NATO to close the airspace over Ukraine and develop a no-fly zone to stop Russia attacking, especially after the attack on Europe's largest nuclear power plant. But the West, nervous about potentially making things worse and escalating the war beyond Ukraine, refused.Zelenskyy called NATO's actions weak, and I can understand his frustration and desperation. I mean how is it we are watching a man, a father, a husband, fighting literally for his and his country's lives, having survived 3 assassination attempts, and still begging for help the West just can't give, it's soul-destroying. The humanitarian disaster we're watching unfold will have far-reaching consequences – more than a million people seeking refuge already. It is all so so harrowing that it's hard to believe the best some people can do here at home is attack Russians who've left their country behind, to come here to live a peaceful life.
In today's episode, Andy and the crew are joined in the studio by JP Sears. They discuss CDC director Rochelle Walensky criticizing DeSantis for asking teens to remove their masks, Senator Lindsey Graham calling for Russians to stand up to assassinate Putin, and United Nations of Cats Federation banning Russian cats from competitions.
Michael talks about the most unusual James Bond novel of all, The Spy Who Loved Me. No Jaws. No Russian spy on a revenge quest. No underwater lair. Just a heartbroken girl, a remote motel, and a couple of thugs sent to kill her.

The NPCs - Video Game Commentary, Video Game News, And More!
On today's episode: The video game industry hasn't been shy to embracing controversy in their video games. In 1976, developer Exidy stoked fears from the media with their arcade game, Death Race, and its portrayal of violence against enemies in it's virtual world. Midway Games took it to another level with it's fatalities in Mortal Kombat in 1993 - so much so, that it spawned the ESRB. As graphical and compute power has increased greatly since those games came out, so has the potential to stir even more controversy - increased violence, sexual representation (over-sexualization), controversy for the sake of controversy. If we say the words "No Russian" or "White phosphorus," we're sure for many of you listening you know what we are directly referring to. Given the ongoing situations at home and abroad, as well as the portrayal of real-world events in video games, its time for us to discuss Controversy's Place in Gaming. Is there actually a way to know, and to then prove, that the “Russiagate” story of the 2016 elections—a story which resulted in massive federal prosecutions, escalating international tensions, national paralysis, and a presidential impeachment trial—was completely false? William Binney, a thirty-year veteran of the National Security Agency and its former technical director, will expose the continuing suppression by British intelligence agencies and their American counterparts of his evidence disproving the entire “Russiagate” story. “We can prove, that all the data that Wikileaks published from the DNC, that was downloaded on the 23rd and 25th of May, and also the 26th of August of 2016; all of that carried the signatures of being downloaded to a thumb drive or a CD-ROM, and physically transported,” Binney says. “So, we can prove that in a court of law. In fact, I put that in sworn affidavits that I submitted in the Roger Stone case and also in the General Flynn case. And the judges would not let my testimony in. I've been hard pressed to find anything (Russia) did in the 2016 election, let alone anything they're trying to do in the 2020 election,” Binney said. Roger Stone, speaking with Sean Hannity on Fox TV July 13 in the aftermath of the commutation of his jail sentence by President Donald Trump, stated: “I could have proved at trial, using forensic evidence and expert testimony from fellows like Bill Binney, former NSA counter intelligence expert...that no one hacked the DNC, that there was no online hack of the DNC… But I wasn't allowed to present that defense, because Judge Jackson would not allow it.” Binney, whose work has been featured in documentaries such as PBS Frontline's “United States of Secrets” and the movie “A Good American,” was the designer of the “ThinThread” security system, which could well have prevented the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center from occurring, had he and his associates not been deliberately prevented from deploying it. “But the problem also was that it was a system that would've uncovered all of the criminal activity of our government employees and our secret intelligence agencies, and also others in the world, too,” Binney said. Instead, "universal surveillance" capabilities that he personally designed to protect Americans from terrorist attack were deployed after 9/11 to illegally monitor virtually every citizen of the United States in possession of any electronic device.

The ESRB is not a federal entity, it's a governing body of major video game companies like EA. Is it necessary still and are we okay with them "regulating" themselves. It seems like just another gatekeeper. The catalyst in the 90s was Mortal Combat for the politicians to lobby for existence of ESRB. Arcade games like Time Crisis and House of the Dead also had a factor. The advent of 3d games made it seem more graphic because of how groundbreaking it was. There were others. Sega created The Video Game Rating Council. The gaming companies in the industry didn't trust each other to be impartial. Congress didn't think it was enough. They wanted them to come together with a unifying solution. They came up with the Entertainment Rating Software Board. Companies generally aren't good at governing themselves. How is this any different? The results: EC- Early Childhood, K-A for Kids to Adults which became E for Everyone. In 2005 they added E10+. T 13+ and M is 17+. AO Adults Only is 18+. They've been making the argument about video games corrupting the mind since the 90s, even though countless evidence shows it doesn't affect you any more than other entertainment. Although people are going to rehab for it. Most franchises nowadays capitalize on the achievement factor for people to feel accomplished. Especially when wins are more and more rare like in PUBG or Fortnite. Quite the dopamine dump! Mortal combat deserves credit for starting the outrage, and still keeping with it and not backing down to this point. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony refuse to allow AO, so retailers don't stock it either. Twitch bans any streams of AO. Big Chungus, an AO game, came out in 2018 for extremely detailed violence and sex. He's a big, fat Easter Bunny doppelganger. After brutally murdering Dante from Devil May Cry, he has "animalistic sex with the corpses". There's a sidequest to snort the largest line of cocaine. Playboy video games were popular too as AO games. Was this the millenial version of Faces of Death and your friend's Playboy under the bed? Rockstar made their name off controversial content that pushed the envelope Grand Theft Auto jumpstarted a lot of the regulation. They had a 'Hot Coffee' mod that was originally going to be part of GTA San Andreas (2004). It allowed you to have full on sex in the game with a character who invited you in for coffee. It was a minigame using the same controls for dancing. The rating board denied it being anything but AO rated. They couldn't remove it completely since they were so close to the launch date, so they hid it in the code by encrypting it and releasing it on console. They created a port for the PC eventually and the same day it came out, gamers cracked the code to make it playable and releasing mods for it. Senator Hillary Clinton pushed for new regulations be put on video games sales. In New York, a class action lawsuit was filed by an 85 year old grandma who purchased the game for her 14 year old grandson. GTA ended up losing upwards of a million dollars to the National PTA and the ESRB. In December 2005, Senators Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman and Evan Bayh introduced the Family Entertainment Protection Act, which called for a federal mandate enforcement of the ESRB ratings system in order to protect children from inappropriate content. A patch for the original version of the game, Cold Coffee, was designed to counter edit the script and disable the mini-game and crash the game if one attempts to access it. GTA IV was released in 2008. In Liberty City, they got revenge by making the Statue of Liberty as Hillary Clinton with a hot coffee in her hand. Data Mining is still done today by code-savvy players to see unreleased content embedded within the game code for future release. It's reminiscient of the old days of having to buy Pokemon books and the rumors about getting Mew. A rumor that took almost a decade to figure out how to do the glitch to get Mew. The biggest companies are the ones that have to carry the torch in terms of freedom of content and expression. The crusade isn't as much on violence anymore. There's more of an argument for regulation if it gets too realistic in terms of the future and VR. Mobile gaming- pubg runs better on the console and new Diablo. Mobile is better for user criticism to their user base and making fixes for them. EveryonesBattlefield, Battlefield 5 Using the largest gaming franchises to push their own agenda ESA was original ratings company before the ESRB and now they run E3. How many missteps is the consumer going to allow EA to have before people vote with their dollar? There's a big movement for small and indie gaming companies, but they can't compete with their infrastructure until a AAA company steps in. PUBG is a perfect example for a great concept that people are waiting for a major company to build off like with the newest Call of Duty. No Russian level in Modern Warefare 2. Fight Against Grenade Spam.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Review Blowout Sure, Roland Emmerich can blow up the world, the Boondock Saints can blow up mobsters, and New Moon and can blow up women's sense of reason, but despite November's filmic barage, nothing compares to the all-out assault on the young male population in the form of the fastest selling, most played, fifty megaton sequel to the best multiplayer first-person shooter ever made. And with that in mind, we spent a marathon session dissecting, debating, and dolloping praise on Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. From multiplayer map design, to single player story pacing, to the controversial "No Russian" level, join us as we pick apart the biggest game of the year. We're oscar mike, it's Weekly Monotony.
WISE FWOM YOUR GWAYVE Welcome back to the show, everyone! We've been absent for a couple months, but the whole gang is eager to start producing shows on a more regular basis.Because we've been negligent in recording over such a critical period of time for major game releases, this episode features us playing catch-up on the infamous fourth quarter onslaught of top-tier blockbuster games -- and it doesn't even cover all the bases.Initially, we'd planned on a show with three thirty-minute segments:Reflections on the games of the past few monthsA debrief on the controversies surrounding Modern Warfare 2 ("No Russian," lack of dedicated server support on PC)A look ahead at the major releases waiting in the first quarter of 2010After more than two hours of discussion, we only made it through part two. That was when we decided it was best to call it a night and give people a chance to actually listen to this episode. We're hoping to get together and record the final portion of this discussion soon, but this hefty hunk of Sasquatch-y goodness ought to provide you plenty of entertainment and keep you warm at night. Let us know what you think, and thanks for listening!
