We head to South Africa to start this week. Two South African men vanished from separate hospitals in recent years - only to be discovered days later, their bodies found in the strangest of places. Official explanations have never added up. Were they murdered? And if so… was their murderer human? Or something else entirely? Then we'll head to England, where, perched high above the sea on the island's northeast coast, the ruins of Whitby Abbey have stood for nearly fourteen centuries - silent, watching, and supposedly haunted. Then, a Veteran shares with us his tale of something from the other side reaching out and grabbing him. Who did this soldier show up with as he was not alone. Lastly, a young girl moves in a new home that she immediately hates. What lives there and why does it hate her so much? The evil eye lives in your group chat. Did I stutter? Ever notice the SECOND you share good news - your life collapses faster than a Nature Valley bar? Same. One minute I'm being loved correctly, soft life era unlocked… Next minute? Like not even 24 hours later - I break my foot, bleed from my privates, and end up crawling around my house like a feral naked raccoon throwing up on my hardwood floors with my milk bags hanging low, while I genuinely wonder how I got here. The evil eye is REAL. But it doesn't come from your enemies… it comes from your friends - the ones cheering the loudest… right until you start winning. Most of them don't even realise they're subconsciously sending you bad energy… just because your happiness reminds them of the places they're not.Protect your wins. Protect your joy. And get ready to laugh your toes off with today's episode. Hit play — and if this episode calls someone out, send it to them. In the frozen landscape of Finnish winter, 1885, the quiet croft of Efraim Martin in Ylöjärvi became the center of local attention thanks to a series of unexplainable events that saw almost the entire neighbourhood crowd into the small farmhouse. Rumours of the devils and demons wound through the township, as neighbors swore they saw an invisible force cause havoc throughout the otherwise peaceful home. The story spread like the winter frost, and soon the authorities themselves were forced to ask the question: was this trickery, or had the Devil truly come to Ylöjärvi?SOURCES Stenius, J. Send us a textA stubborn cold, a cursed bottle cap, and a Halloween cape with a thousand wrinkles set the stage for a conversation about the tiny beliefs that steer our choices. We laugh our way through dubious trends like “hot chocolate” electrolytes and the red-wine-on-ice-cream craze, then stop cold at a time capsule from 1916: a message in a bottle penned by two Australian soldiers on their way to war. That letter, hopeful and human, unlocks the real heart of the episode—why we cling to rituals when life gets unpredictable. From there, we chart how yesterday's taboos became today's habits: no shoes on the bed, avoid ladders, toss salt, knock on wood. We trace ladders back to Egyptian sacred geometry, salt to ancient protection rites, and tapping wood to tree spirits that once stood in for luck. Along the way, we own our personal rituals—phone solitaire during turbulence, pre-show handshakes that flip nerves into focus—and talk about the moment a superstition helps rather than rules. Then we go global: Sweden's no-keys-on-the-table rule, Turkey's no gum at night, Japan's tucked thumbs by graveyards, Australia's “rabbit rabbit” for monthly luck, and feng shui warnings about mirrors facing the bed. Each one is a window into how cultures turn uncertainty into something you can hold.We even discuss the recent penny shortage! If pennies cost more than they're worth to mint, do they disappear—and does a lucky find still count? Whether it's a coin on the sidewalk or a whispered Hail Mary when sirens wail, we're all trying to stitch meaning into the noise. Hit play for stories, history, and a clear-eyed take on when superstition is wisdom in disguise. If this conversation made you smile, nod, or text a friend “rabbit rabbit,” follow the show, leave a quick review, and share your favorite superstition with us.Mike Haggerty Buick GMCRight on the corner, right on the price! Full Text of ReadingsThe Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) Lectionary: 668The Saint of the day is Commemoration of All the Faithful DepartedThe Story of the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. “If we had no care for the dead,” Augustine noted, “we would not be in the habit of praying for them.” Yet pre-Christian rites for the deceased retained such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that a liturgical commemoration was not observed until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an annual day of prayer for the departed members. In the middle of the 11th century, Saint Odilo, abbot of Cluny, France, decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church. The theological underpinning of the feast is the acknowledgment of human frailty. Since few people achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some period of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God. The Council of Trent affirmed this purgatory state and insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purification. Superstition easily clung to the observance. Medieval popular belief held that the souls in purgatory could appear on this day in the form of witches, toads or will-o'-the-wisps. Graveside food offerings supposedly eased the rest of the dead. Observances of a more religious nature have survived. These include public processions or private visits to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers and lights. This feast is observed with great fervor in Mexico. Reflection Whether or not one should pray for the dead is one of the great arguments which divide Christians. Appalled by the abuse of indulgences in the Church of his day, Martin Luther rejected the concept of purgatory. Yet prayer for a loved one is, for the believer, a way of erasing any distance, even death. In prayer we stand in God's presence in the company of someone we love, even if that person has gone before us into death.

Divination has traditionally been understood and defined as the art of knowing and declaring future events or hidden things by means of communication with occult or occultic forces – powers that the Church clearly identifies as diabolical and which can act as a “portal” or “doorway” to the occult and occultic activity. There is a difference between a quirk and superstition, and it's important to decipher the two. From there, it's realizing whether a superstition is potentially holding you back. All this, as well as the latest news in the game of golf, with host Jeff Hartman on the Fairways & Dreams podcast. This podcast is a part of the Golfer Gang Network of podcasts. Text a Message to the ShowIt's that time of year again to talk about those spooky stories and things that go bump in the night. This time we're looking at San Francisco and talking to friend of the show, JIm Dudley. Jim has been on the show multiple times and just to remind you he's a retired deputy chief from the San Francisco PD with over 30 years experience, he teaches at San Francisco State University, and hosts the Policing Matters podcast. Even though Jim and I both share the opinion that most spooky things can be easily explained by natural causes, that doesn't mean we haven't had a few moments that give you pause as you sort out what this means.Music is by Brian BolgerHey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 46Tags:Halloween, Aliens, CIT, Chainsaws, Community Policing, Costumes, Drugs, Ghosts, Hauntings, Holidays, Kidnapping, Patrol, Police, Spooky, Superstitions, Warlocks, San Francisco, CaliforniaSupport the showThanks for Listening! Was Joseph Smith a mystic? Searching for the term ‘mysticism' on the Church website yields, “See: False Doctrine, Sorcery, Superstitions; Traditions of Men.” So it's no wonder many church members haven't thought much about mysticism—the role it may have played in Joseph's experience, or how it might inform their own everyday lives or transform their spiritual practices. But poet Kathryn Knight Sonntag describes it differently: “Trusting the groundless ground, trusting that the darkness or the chaos or the unknown place actually is deeply full of knowing and love and purpose. And that it's ultimately the path into apotheosis. It's ultimately where we begin that journey of becoming divine.” In Episode 241, Kathryn joins Susan and Cynthia to explore the concept of mysticism. What might it look like for Latter-day Saints to step off the prescribed map and onto the sacred ground of our own lives in pursuit of personal encounters with God?
