It is not a pretty bridge. Four lanes of busy traffic rush across Puente Bulnes during most hours. To the North, it buttresses against two overpasses that lead to a bustling highway. Below it, run the milky grey waters of the Mapocho River, after passing through downtown Santiago, Chile. 50 years ago, in another time, this bridge was a favorite execution site for the military and police of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Today, Aquiles Cordova will not let it be forgotten—ever. This is episode 62 of Stories of Resistance—a podcast produced by The Real News. Each week, we'll bring you stories of resistance like this. Trump's scheme to maintain control in the House in the midterms? Eliminate Democratic seats in Texas by redistricting. Texas House Democrats have responded by fleeing the state to block the necessary quorum on the proposed district map – now, the FBI might be deployed to arrest those Democrats; but, for what crime? Harold Meyerson comments. Also: Robert Reich says the origin of our troubles with Trump and MAGA go back to the sixties; he says it started with the sixties movements – which created “a giant political void that would eventually be filled by Donald Trump's angry, bigoted cultural populism.” His new memoir is “Coming Up Short.” Plus: "From Dictatorship to Democracy" by Gene Sharp, the world's top scholar on peaceful protest, seems to be all about Trump but was published a decade before Trump appeared on the scene. For example: "Dictatorships are never as strong as they think they are. And people are never as weak as they think they are" – the book is our thank you gift for donations during today's KPFK fund drive – Alan Minsky comments.

Her er Karinas noter til dagens afsnit: Empati Definition:The ability to imagine oneself as another person is a sophisticated process. However, the basic capacity to recognize emotions in others may be innate[5] and may be achieved unconsciously. Empathy is not all-or-nothing; rather, a person can be more or less empathic toward another and empirical research supports a variety of interventions that are able to improve empathyFrom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EmpathyMan kan skelne mellem Empati: Evnen til at forstå og dele andre følelser. We model the people around us and other people model from us. Den sociale Hjerne:We are wired to see faces. We are looking for social connection / social safety.Social Pain - feels like physical painSocial good feelings - activate pleasure paths in the brain=> which gives us social sensitivity. Hvad er Empati biokemisk set?The neurobiology of empathy involves a complex interplay of brain regions and neurotransmitters, notably oxytocin, which enhances social cognition and empathy. Mirror neurons, found in the premotor and parietal cortices, are also crucial for understanding and sharing actions and emotions with others. Empathy is linked to various brain areas, including the limbic system, and involves both positive and negative emotionsKey aspects of the neurochemistry of empathy:Oxytocin:This neuropeptide is a "morality molecule" that promotes social bonding, love, and empathy.Mirror Neurons:These specialized neurons fire when we perform an action or when we observe someone else performing the same action, contributing to our understanding of others' intentions and actions.Limbic System:This area of the brain, responsible for emotions and bonding, plays a significant role in empathy.Prefrontal Cortex:Areas like the dorsal and ventral medial prefrontal cortex are involved in cognitive empathy, allowing us to understand and interpret others' mental states.Other Neurotransmitters:While oxytocin is prominent, other neurotransmitters and hormones, like cortisol, also influence social interactions and empathy.Genetics:A small percentage of the variation in empathy between individuals is due to genetic factors-------------------------------------Degeres of EmpatyMan kan være mere eller mindre empatisk over for andre. If something is right in front of us-If something is familiar to us / family-If something resonates with past experiences... These we call bright spots. We all have blind spots. Extending Empathy (growing your empathy) is giving attention and focus to blind spots.-People you tend to avoid => often because they are difficult to understand/empathize with, because they and their experiences are different from you. => More effort needed to understand and the brain/ppl are lazy. Empaty Gap:An empathy gap, sometimes referred to as an empathy bias, is a breakdown or reduction in empathy (the ability to recognize, understand, and share another's thoughts and feelings) where it might otherwise be expected to occur. Empathy gaps may occur due to a failure in the process of empathizing[1] or as a consequence of stable personality characteristics,[2][3][4] and may reflect either a lack of ability or motivation to empathize.Empathy gaps can be interpersonal (toward others) or intrapersonal (toward the self, e.g. when predicting one's own future preferences). A great deal of social psychological research has focused on intergroup empathy gaps, their underlying psychological and neural mechanisms, and their implications for downstream behavior (e.g. prejudice toward outgroup members).Film/Bøger er Empathy machines! There are 2 separate sets of empathy networks in the brain1) Feeling: Mirroring emotions and reading emotions. Imagine intensely what is being felt. (zooming in - can be overwhelming)2) Thinking: Mentalizing the though of another. Why are there these feelings? (zooming out - distancing your emotions by factualizing)--------------------------------------------------EVERYTHING STARTS WITH ATTENTION / OPMÆRKSOMHED!Uden det kan man slet ikke starte empatien.Less empathy in the world, perhaps because we give our attention away to our phones. ------------------------------------Empathy is what enables you to understand another point of view. A polarized society has a lack of empathy. Alm. menneskers hjerner lyste op i bestemte områder. Viola. Begge gruppers hjerner lyste lige meget op. Måske er psykopati når man har valgt ikke at føle empati-Nævnt i denne video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP_kNs198Zg—————————————- https://www.sciencealert.com/how-psychopaths-process-pain-could-explain-their-lack-of-empathy:Research has shown that lower levels of empathy for other people can be influenced by a higher tolerance for pain. If someone does not understand the feelings of pain the same way as other people, they probably don't understand the pain that other people may be experiencing. Also, a 2020 review showed that the brain networks used in processing pain are also used to process empathy. This could mean that if people higher in psychopathy don't feel as much pain themselves, their perceptions of other people's pain could also be reduced via this shared network.Just because you show higher psychopathic traits does not necessarily mean you are going to be the lead character of your own true crime documentary, though. In fact, recent research, including a 2022 study, noted psychopathic traits can be positive and help people regulate their emotions.Surgeons and other medical professionals show high levels of psychopathic traits, particularly the stress immunity part of the personality trait.Perhaps this is what allows medical professionals high in psychopathic traits to stay calm under pressure, allowing them to make quick, rational decisions without being overwhelmed by stresshttps://videnskab.dk/krop-sundhed/skanninger-afsloerer-hvad-psykopaters-hjerner-har-til-faellesGustave Mark Gilbert QuotesI think I've come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. It's the one characteristic that connects all the defendants. A genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.( 1950 book The Psychology of Dictatorship)

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I'm joined by Dave from Theory Underground to unpack the “Post-Class Fractured Mass” (PCFM): why the working class, the “proletariat”  no longer coheres the way Marxists imagined, how media + schooling carve us into niches and swarms, and what this means for organizing today. We talk about why the decline of working-class power is due to real material factors in the economy, and not just due to ideology and “class consciousness.”  This brings us to the pivotal question: in the age of the gig economy, is the working class obsolete as the agent of revolutionary change? If so, who is the revolutionary subject today? In the backroom, we discuss the issues with the term “Post-Left”, how people burn out from politics, and how bourgeois pseudoprogressive libertine attitudes bleed into leftist circles (like polyamory, non-monogamy, etc). It's time for another encore!Ep.67 (originally released September 20, 2023) — Originally from Chile, Magdalena Weinstein spent the first 17 years of her life living under the rule of an authoritarian dictatorship. In this episode, she shares her childhood experiences, family life, and what motivated her to immigrate to the US in 2004. Magdalena speaks very candidly about the challenges of being in immigrant in America, and about time spent in a series of traumatizing and controlling environments - dictatorship in her formative years that stoked an early hunger for autonomy; years spent as an Iyengar yoga student and teacher striving for whitewashed dominion over her body; and a decade of investment in a coaching program where she experienced mind control and ongoing racial micro-aggressions. She generously shares each of these stories with us, poignantly illustrating what all of these seemingly unrelated experiences have in common. In 2019, Magdalena trained as a trauma specialist. In the final third of the episode, she helps us understand how trauma related to control is stored in the body and what, both individually and collectively, we can do about it. She describes the differences between control and personal agency, particularly in terms of owning and choosing psychological and somatic states. Then, Magdalena calls on wellness practitioners to trade Western idealism for a more realistic and collective approach to the growing challenges we now face as humans.Magdalena Weinstein, SEP (she/her), is a Somatic Trauma Specialist who offers trauma recovery interventions utilizing Somatic Experiencing®, Touch Skills, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), Parts Work, and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy perspectives. Blending the fields of Somatics, Neurology, and Social Justice, she is committed to helping individuals and groups transition towards personal, ancestral, and collective trauma healing. Her specialties are developmental and complex trauma, C-PTSD, PTSD, chronic conditions, domestic violence, and sexual assault trauma, and social justice dynamics, including racial trauma, immigration trauma, and war trauma. Originally from Chile, she was born and raised in a Dictatorship for her first 17 years of life and immigrated to the USA in 2004.She lives in a rural home in Mendocino, Northern California (on unceded Pomo Territory), with her husband, their two children, dogs, cats, and snakes. She has a private practice in her home studio, is an assistant at SE trainings, and is a member of the DEI committee at Somatic Experiencing International. She is also finishing the first year of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Training.Referenced In This Episode:Heather Cox Richardson - September 11, 2023Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, by Naomi KleinSapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah HarariSupport the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. "Either you don't have a fiat currency or you don't have a democracy. But the two things together, and this has been proven, cannot coexist happily without the complete erosion of purchasing power of a civilization and the complete erosion of an empire - which is exactly what has occurred and what has occurred throughout history. The natural bedfellow for a fiat economy is a dictatorship. The natural bedfellow for bitcoin is democracy."~ Daniel BattenIn this episode I sat down with Daniel Batten, who discovered Bitcoin's environmental benefits before grasping its economic power, and his journey reveals something profound about the nature of fiat money itself. How did we become trapped in a desire-based economy that rewards consumption over saving? Daniel traces this back to the 1920s propaganda campaigns that transformed capitalism from meeting needs to manufacturing wants—and explains why Bitcoin might be the antidote to a century of psychological manipulation. But here's what really caught my attention: if the natural state of fiat is dictatorship, what does that mean for small nations trying to maintain sovereignty? From Bhutan's quiet accumulation of Bitcoin worth nearly half their GDP to Pakistan's strategic pivot away from IMF dependency, we're witnessing a fundamental shift in global power structures. Are we watching the end of financial colonialism? And could Bitcoin mining on landfills actually turn the waste of Western civilization into the foundation for sound money? This conversation will change how you think about money, consumption, and what it really means to fix the incentives. Check out our awesome sponsors! In the latest Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, and journalist Chris Steyn talk about the latest political drama. De Beer charges that South Africa is in pseudo undercover dictatorship - despite the African National Congress (ANC) being “in ICU”. He comments on all the options ranging from a Vote of No Confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa to Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille dropping either the nuclear bomb or atom bomb “which she says she holds”. He weighs the strengths of the factions in the ANC and says, in the last NEC, there was such a stand-off between President Cyril Ramaphosa and SG Fikile Mbalula over the party staying in the GNU that rumour has it that the president actually got up and left. Meanwhile, word on the street has it that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is losing popularity. As for future elections, De Beer warns: “The ANC has an attitude with its gatherings, its giving of Kentucky, its giving of the T-shirt and the cap, and it wins those logistics every time. And until the DA and all of us don't get it that we've got to fight fire with fire, we will never get that power change in this country.” Turning to “murder by power', De Beer laments the assassination of the Ekhurhuleni Audit Chief, as well as the alleged involvement of Special Forces soldiers in a “hitsquad unit to kidnap and take people out”.

In this explosive broadcast, Tara reveals why the so-called “Twelve-Day War” with Iran is far from finished. She breaks down how Iran's uranium enrichment program, run largely by Chinese scientists, survived U.S. bunker-buster strikes because critical stockpiles remain buried under Isfahan—a site too deep to destroy. Tara argues Iran is effectively a Chinese proxy, and warns that regime change or further strikes may be inevitable, as Israel openly threatens to eliminate the Ayatollah. Switching gears, Tara celebrates the Supreme Court's landmark decision curbing the power of liberal judges to impose nationwide injunctions—something she calls “judicial dictatorship.” The ruling means district judges can no longer single-handedly block Trump's entire agenda. With analysis from Andy McCarthy, Pam Bondi, and Ted Cruz, she explains how this restores constitutional balance and frees the administration to act without being hamstrung by partisan courts. The segment closes with a warning: If Democrats return to power, they will revive funding and legal protections for Iran's nuclear ambitions—and America could face an emboldened, nuclear-armed adversary backed by China.

Dimitri and Khalid investigate Technocracy, Inc., a mostly-forgotten group from the 1930s, its plans for an automated North American “technate” controlled by gray suit-clad engineers, and the dracular life of Technocracy's leader in Canada, the fascist chiropractor (and Elon Musk's maternal grandfather) Joshua Haldeman. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Oct 11, 2018 In this episode, Alyson joins Breht to do a dive deep into Vladimir Lenin's State and Revolution, one of the most important texts in Marxist political theory. We break down Lenin's core arguments about the state as an instrument of class rule, the necessity of smashing the bourgeois state rather than reforming it, and the vision of a transitional workers' state on the path to communism. We also discuss the historical context of 1917, how Lenin draws from Marx and Engels, and why this work remains essential for understanding the nature of power, revolution, and socialist strategy today. This episode offers an accessible yet rigorous guide to one of Lenin's most influential works. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio https://revleftradio.com/

The Washington Monthly called him as “one of America's most important journalists.” The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy. Why did Trump hit 185 countries with tariffs, even uninhabited islands of penguins near Antarctica, but not Russia and its vassal state Belarus, used to wage Russia's genocidal invasion of Ukraine? It's almost like Trump is a Russian asset, repaying Russia for helping him rise to power twice and for all the easy money he received over the years when no credible institution would lend to this trust-fund kid who went bankrupt six times. But why crash the global economy? The answer only makes sense if you're Putin. As a dictator with no electoral pressure, Putin benefits from destabilizing democracies. By causing economic chaos, he weakens his competitors and fuels backlash against incumbents—exactly what helped Trump return to power in 2024. When you factor in election hacking and influence operations, it becomes clear: crashing the global economy gives the Kremlin an advantage in manipulating elections worldwide. This pressure on elected officials, like Keir Starmer in the UK or Macron in France, plays into Putin's hands. Trump's actions seem to align with that strategy. In this week's bonus episode, we discuss Gene Sharp's From Dictatorship to Democracy from our recent Gaslit Nation book club. On April 7 at 4 PM ET, the Security Committee will present on protecting our digital world in a dystopian era. Then, on April 14, we'll host a live taping with Patrick Guarasci, strategist behind Judge Susan Crawford's victory in Wisconsin's Supreme Court race, to discuss how to fight and win righteous battles, even if you're up against the richest man in the world.  Thank you to all who support Gaslit Nation–we could not make the show without you!  Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? In this week's Gaslit Nation bonus show, we're joined by Olga Lautman, an expert on the Russian mafia. Her Substack, Trump Tyranny Tracker, is a vital resource documenting Trump's war against America, and the global war of fascism vs. democracy.    Olga made headlines recently by exposing connections between Trump's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, and Russia, connected to SignalGate. (We call it the Kremlin Klown Kar for a reason!) Olga breaks down the implications of SignalGate and Trump's Putin-backed war against our democracy.     We also discuss a disturbing trend: an anti-war Russian scientist at Harvard was detained at immigration and faces deportation back to Russia, where she could be imprisoned or worse. This escalates alarm bells that the Trump regime is “disappearing” people, starting with the most vulnerable.    Olga offers insights on recent victories like the historic Democratic win in deep-red Trump country in Pennsylvania, as well as Trump's ongoing efforts to suppress votes and carry out his next coup. We also discuss whether to stay and fight or flee the country.   Stay and fight! Fleeing abroad, especially this early, is like obeying in advance.    Thank you to everyone who supports Gaslit Nation–we could not make this show without you!
