What Tech Looks Like In A Dictatorship by Nick Espinosa, Chief Security Fanatic
Andy Schectman returns to the program to expose the global power shifts unfolding behind the scenes—shifts that most Americans remain dangerously unaware of. While the media, academia, and elected officials are mostly silent, unelected financial elites are stepping into unprecedented positions of authority. Canada is now led by Mark Carney, a central banker turned Prime Minister, and the Bank for International Settlements is headed by Agustín Carstens, Mexico's former finance minister—a sign that the global economic realignment is being orchestrated far beyond the ballot box. This conversation is part of our ongoing Friday night series, where we pull back the curtain on the forces reshaping the world—and how they will directly impact your financial future and national sovereignty.
Dimitri and Khalid continue exploring the strange apartheid-loving life of Elon Musk's grandfather and whether any faint echoes of Technocracy, Inc. might be found in today's PayPal Mafia “techno-optimist” AI slop dystopia. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Oct 11, 2018 In this episode, Alyson joins Breht to do a dive deep into Vladimir Lenin's State and Revolution, one of the most important texts in Marxist political theory. We break down Lenin's core arguments about the state as an instrument of class rule, the necessity of smashing the bourgeois state rather than reforming it, and the vision of a transitional workers' state on the path to communism. We also discuss the historical context of 1917, how Lenin draws from Marx and Engels, and why this work remains essential for understanding the nature of power, revolution, and socialist strategy today. This episode offers an accessible yet rigorous guide to one of Lenin's most influential works. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio https://revleftradio.com/

Gentlemen, Holy Saturday is upon us. A solemn pause before the joy of Easter. In Day 40 of our Lenten journey with St. Joseph, we confront the weight of Christ's sacrifice in sacred silence. I challenge you to join me for 12 minutes of reflection, honoring the 12 tribes and disciples, to ponder what Jesus did for you on the cross. He died for your sins—feel that truth today. No Mass, just waiting, fasting, and prayer as we anticipate His resurrection. I also share why silence is vital in our noisy world, drawing from Cardinal Sarah's The Power of Silence. This episode is your chance to go deep, to be still, and to prepare your heart for tomorrow. Hit play, embrace the silence, and let's finish Lent strong. The Washington Monthly called him as “one of America's most important journalists.” The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. Why did Trump hit 185 countries with tariffs, even uninhabited islands of penguins near Antarctica, but not Russia and its vassal state Belarus, used to wage Russia's genocidal invasion of Ukraine? It's almost like Trump is a Russian asset, repaying Russia for helping him rise to power twice and for all the easy money he received over the years when no credible institution would lend to this trust-fund kid who went bankrupt six times. But why crash the global economy? The answer only makes sense if you're Putin. As a dictator with no electoral pressure, Putin benefits from destabilizing democracies. By causing economic chaos, he weakens his competitors and fuels backlash against incumbents—exactly what helped Trump return to power in 2024. When you factor in election hacking and influence operations, it becomes clear: crashing the global economy gives the Kremlin an advantage in manipulating elections worldwide. This pressure on elected officials, like Keir Starmer in the UK or Macron in France, plays into Putin's hands. Trump's actions seem to align with that strategy. Join Nic Cheeseman as he talks to Alexander Lee and Jack Paine about their important new book, The Colonial Origins of Democracy and Dictatorship (Cambridge UP, 2024), which makes a compelling new contribution to the debate. Find out why countries with lengthy exposure to competitive colonial institutions tended to consolidate democracies after independence, and how regime trajectories shaped by colonial rule persist to the present day. Guest: Alexander Lee is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Rochester. His work has made important contributions to a number of areas, including gender quotas, affirmative action, the political economy of South Asia and the legacy of colonialism. His most recent book, Colonial Origins of Democracy and Dictatorship has been highly praised and is out now with Cambridge University Press. Jack Paine is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science at Emory University. He is known for influential research on a range of topics including democratic backsliding, authoritarian power sharing, conflict and the resource curse, and the legacy of colonialism. His most recent book, Colonial Origins of Democracy and Dictatorship has been highly praised and is out now with Oxford University Press. Presenter: Dr Nic Cheeseman is the Professor of Democracy and International Development at the University of Birmingham and Founding Director of CEDAR. On March 31, 1964, the Brazilian military carried out a US-backed coup against the democratically elected government, installing a dictatorship that would last for 21 years. Hundreds of people were disappeared. Thousands imprisoned and tortured. But musicians stood up, singing songs that were a sometimes subtle — sometimes not-so-subtle — critique of the dictatorship. The military regime responded by censoring songs, music and artists. Some, like Chico Buarque, went into exile. Others were detained, jailed and even tortured. But still the music played on. Still, artists found a way for their music to reach the people. Still, the music gave hope that “tomorrow would be another day.”This is episode 14 of Stories of Resistance — a podcast co-produced by The Real News and Global Exchange. Each week, we'll bring you stories of resistance like this. Inspiration for dark times. This week, in remembrance of the anniversary of Brazil's military coup on March 31, 1964, we are taking a deep dive in Brazil. All three episodes this week will look at stories of resistance in Brazil. From protest music, to general strikes against the dictatorship, to the Free Lula vigil in more recent times.Written and produced by Michael Fox.If you like what you hear, please subscribe, like, share, comment, or leave a review. To mark this anniversary, Michael Fox created a Spotify playlist of songs written in resistance to Brazil's military dictatorship. When you picture the coolest guy in a Western flick, what do you see? Probably the one who appears calm, collected, and speaking only when it counts. St. Joseph would be the epitome of that man. Today, Jeff comes out of the shadows from behind the camera to unpack how Joseph's silence shaped Jesus, proving actions outshine words every time. No recorded lines in the Gospels, yet his presence screams patience, humility, and control. These are virtues we need as husbands and fathers. My challenge to you: carve out silence today. Block the noise and give God 15 minutes to speak. Hit play to hear how St. Joseph's quiet example can transform your life, then step up and live it.Products/References MentionedBook: Consecration to St. Joseph by Fr. Donald Calloway Book: The Power of Silence Against the Dictatorship of Noise by Cardinal Robert Sarah Email: themanlycatholic.gmail.com Powerful Quotes“When Jesus speaks, we're hearing St. Joseph speak through Jesus.” “Preach the gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.” “How can we say no to the outside and give silence to God?”Start today: find 15 minutes of silence. Shut off the phone, step away from the chaos, and listen to God—because that's where real strength begins.Send us a text Support the showPlease prayerfully consider supporting the podcast on our Buy Me A Coffee page. to help grow the show to reach as many men as possible! In this week's Gaslit Nation bonus show, we're joined by Olga Lautman, an expert on the Russian mafia. Her Substack, Trump Tyranny Tracker, is a vital resource documenting Trump's war against America, and the global war of fascism vs. democracy. Olga made headlines recently by exposing connections between Trump's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, and Russia, connected to SignalGate. (We call it the Kremlin Klown Kar for a reason!) Olga breaks down the implications of SignalGate and Trump's Putin-backed war against our democracy. We also discuss a disturbing trend: an anti-war Russian scientist at Harvard was detained at immigration and faces deportation back to Russia, where she could be imprisoned or worse. This escalates alarm bells that the Trump regime is “disappearing” people, starting with the most vulnerable. Olga offers insights on recent victories like the historic Democratic win in deep-red Trump country in Pennsylvania, as well as Trump's ongoing efforts to suppress votes and carry out his next coup. We also discuss whether to stay and fight or flee the country. Stay and fight! Fleeing abroad, especially this early, is like obeying in advance. Edition No118 | 27-03-2025 - Surkov is a useful path to understanding the perverse and contradictory heart of contemporary Russia. Exploring a recent interview Vladislav Surkov conducted with L'Express reveals a secretive, complicated and controversial man. He is known as Putin's Rasputin, the Grey Cardinal of the Kremlin or the Puppet Master. Sourkov is the shadowy adviser who inspired novelist Giuliano da Empoli to write The Wizard of the Kremlin. He can be considered the 'architect' of the Russian political system but who has distanced himself from the man he served for two decades, Vladimir Putin. No one knows what Sourkov is doing today. In the L'Express interview he avoided the question. 1. He is one of the architects of the post-truth worldLong before Donald Trump weaponized the term ‘fake news', Surkov was honing his art. Today, Moscow is using Surkov's techniques to sow political confusion in democracies throughout the western world. A former associate said: “That's a fashion created and nourished by Surkov: this flavour of post-modernism. Nothing is true. There is no truth. There are alternative truths.”2. He rose from nowhere to become the power behind the throne in Putin's RussiaHe invented 'Sovereign Democracy', a system in which the illusion of democratic choice only had one outcome: the continuation of Putin's rule. One former colleague said of him: Vladimir Putin owes much of his success to Surkov's machinations.“At the ends of his fingers he controlled the threads of so many political structures. Those structures were so complicated that only Surkov knew where everything was: the opposition, the political parties, MPs, the governors, the creation or closing of political movements or NGOs, the church, the media, civil society...” ----------LINKS:https://www.lexpress.fr/monde/europe/exclusive-vladislav-sourkov-the-kremlins-wizard-russia-will-expand-in-all-directions-as-far-as-god-WWIE5OJMPVHJ5KTTAHNLE4WPME/?cmp_redirect?cmp_redirect=truehttps://www.ft.com/content/1324acbb-f475-47ab-a914-4a96a9d14bachttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39342784-almost-zero----------Easter Pysanky: Silicon Curtain - https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/easter-pysanky-silicon-curtainCar for Ukraine has joined forces with a group of influencers, creators, and news observers during this special Easter season. This motivating discussion was supposed to run earlier, but then the third year anniversary of Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine was marked by Trump viciously reminding the world he works for Russia by kicking Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy out of the White House, after he, Vance, and MTG's boyfriend tried to ambush the war hero. In our recorded first ever Gaslit Nation book club, we discussed Albert Camus' The Stranger (Matthew Ward translation) and Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, to see what wisdom they hold for us today, and how these two works “talk to each other.” For March, we're reading Gene Sharp's revolutionary handbook From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation, which informed revolts in Ukraine, the Arab Spring, Hong Kong, and beyond. Who is "Woke Jesus"? It's the actual Jesus from the Bible—the dark-skinned Jewish revolutionary who advocated for feeding the poor and healing the sick. The Christian nationalists who use Trump's MAGA movement as a weapon against our democracy are also at war with Jesus, as this week's guest explains. By the strictest definition, doesn't that make Trump the anti-Christ? Investigative journalist Katherine Stewart, author of the new book Money, Lies, and God, examines the right-wing Libertarian elites taking over our democracy through white Christian nationalist foot soldiers and offers ways to fight back. Stewart is also the author of The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism and The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children. Her journey included witnessing Christian nationalist recruitment and hate campaigns take root in her child's public school. As Andrea discuses in the opening of this week's show, MAGA/Russia are weakening the U.S. from within (mass purge, trade war, declaring war on experts, etc.) so that we're scared and confused, and easier to conquer. We won't let them win. Thank you to everyone who joined Gaslit Nation's first book club last month! Glenn Greenwald recently responded to an article by Chris Hedges titled “The Purge of the Deep State and the Road to Dictatorship” describing Donald Trump's dismantling of longstanding government institutions as a portent of worse to come. Greenwald disagreed with Hedges' assessment, crediting Trump with positive steps like defunding USAID and firing thousands of civilian employees at the Pentagon. Hedges returns to The Jimmy Dore Show to address Greenwald's response and explain what Glenn got wrong. Plus segments on whether Trump and Elon Musk's dramatic efforts to curb government spending will forestall economic collapse and the recent AI-generated “Gaza Riviera” video Trump posted to Truth Social. Also featuring Kurt Metzger, Ed Dowd and Paul Stone.
From Russia to China: Autocracy, Inc. author Anne Applebaum reveals how modern autocrats create a new world order by working together against democracy. What We Discuss with Anne Applebaum: Modern autocracies form opportunistic networks rather than ideological blocs, collaborating through financial interests, technology sharing, and mutual support against democratic ideals — despite having different political systems. Russia's invasion of Ukraine represents a deliberate challenge to international law and norms, with Putin demonstrating he can violate conventions without consequences. China's surveillance technology has evolved to potentially predict political dissent by combining online monitoring, real-world tracking, and AI analysis — and this technology is being exported to other authoritarian regimes. The decline of democracy is typically gradual, often taking decades as institutions are slowly undermined, while many citizens may not realize their democracy is eroding until it becomes impossible to elect alternative leadership. Citizens can strengthen democracy through active local engagement: participating in local politics, joining community organizations, and building real-world connections across political divides. This practical involvement in addressing concrete local issues helps counter online polarization and maintain democratic resilience. And much more...
