Join us for our deep dive into the Battle at the Wall - the set piece battle of a Storm of Swords! We recap all of the characters involved and explore the setup: from Jon Snow's time with the Free Folk and the subsequent attack on Castle Black, to how Mance Rayder motivated thousands of Free Folk to move south as one group, and what brought Stannis Baratheon north after his crushing defeat at the Blackwater. Then we go step by step through the initial assault on the Wall by Mance's massive army, Jon Snow's defensive response, and the final and surprising conclusion. Hosted on Acast.

Send us a textJon watches as Mance Rayder and the Horn of Joramun are consigned to the flames. Stannis displays Lightbringer and the free folk are invited to come through the Wall, to bend the knee, and to get a bowl of onion soup. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow watches as Mance Rayder is dragged to his death. The former Brother of the Night's Watch and King Beyond the Wall is a broken man desperately pleading for his life and disavowing his kingship. He's put in a cage above a pit of kindling. Melisandre brings forth the Horn of Joramun, which if blown would have brought down the Wall and let the enemy in. She burns it in the pit, and the flames reach up to Mance.Acting on Jon's orders, several of his men loose shafts to put their former brother out of his misery. As the smell of burning flesh fills the courtyard, Stannis unsheathes Lightbringer, brighter than ever, and the gate through the Wall is opened. The Free Folk are allowed through - the promise of soup and safety from the terrors of winter convince most. But some resist.Stannis has them burn weirwood branches to show their conversion from the Old Gods to R'Hllor and to take the knee before him. All this was against Jon's advice. But Stannis is more interested in loyalty than love.Later, Jon discusses with Clydas the passage that Aemon left for Jon, which describes Lightbringer's heat. Stannis' sword is cold. Is straight arrow Stannis resorting to subterfuge?Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Send us a textJon has a wolf dream and wakes to face a trying day. He meets with Stannis and disappoints him by rejecting the king's plan to assume control of the abandoned Night's Watch castles. Afterward, he talks with Melisandre who gives him an ominous warning. Simon and Mackelly interpret her meaning.Chapter Review:Ghost races along the Wall in the night. As he runs, he senses his packmates in their various locations around Westeros. Jon Snow wakes in Castle Black realizing that he was warging Ghost in the night. He dresses and sees the unsigned grant from King Stannis sitting on his desk. This won't be an easy day.Jon finds Stannis and Melisandre in the King's Tower. The king is angry over another rejection letter from a northern house to his call for their support. This time it's 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont who tells him that House Mormont will support only the King in the North, whose name is Stark. Jon tells Stannis that only Mance Rayder can bind the wildlings to the king. Stannis knows but still can't spare the man's life. He is an oathbreaker. Stannis asks if Jon has signed the grant giving Stannis all of the empty Night's Watch castles. Jon hasn't, the ask is too high. Jon suggests that the Night's Watch provide the leaders for the castles and Stannis provides the garrisons, the need not Take the Black. Stannis rejects the idea. Melisandre walks Jon out. Outside she tells him that she has seen him in the flames with enemies all around. She sees ice, blood, daggers, and cold. When Jon says it's always cold at the Wall, she tells him he knows nothing.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. None of them offer much hope of salvation. Varamyr Sixskins lost his wargs and temporarily his mind during the battle. Only his wolves stayed with him. His only remaining companion is a woman named Thistle, who doesn't know who he is. HIs only hope is to warg into someone and live a second life. When Thistle returns she's panicked - the White Walkers are coming. Varamyr has no strength so he invades Thistle.
Once the closest thing to a town in the lands beyond The Wall, something terrible and mysterious befell Hardhome about 600 years ago. It has since become an overgrown ruin, shunned and considered accursed… Yet despite that, it is suddenly important again - as hordes of refugees flee there, following the dreams of a woods witch. As reports reach Jon of wights in the woods and waters, dreams reach Melisandre of an impossibly cold mist turning the Free Folk into skulls. What the heck happened all those years ago? And what the heck is happening there now? Could this be how the Others get their army? Head to factormeals.com/westeros50 and use code westeros50 to get 50% off. In anticipation of the season 8 premiere for Game of Thrones on April 14th, I have decided to dedicate this episode to sharing the location of where the scenes for the show were filmed in Iceland. I am also including film locations that have been confirmed for the upcoming season. Even if you are not a fan of the show, the places on the list of where the scenes were shot are beautiful and worth checking out if you plan to visit. Season 2 Beyond the Wall - Svínafellsjökull Glacier in Skaftafell Iceland has not appeared in every season of the show, but the first time the country made its appearance is during season 2. The filming takes place in Skaftafell along the south coast. I have been fortunate to visit the Skaftafell area numerous times since moving to Iceland. It is part of the Vatnajökull National Park, and it is home to gigantic glaciers and awesome hiking trails. To depict the harsh, cold and stunning world beyond the wall in Game of Thrones, the show filmed on Svínafellsjökull glacier. A decent amount of well known movies have been shot on that glacier. In fact, it is called the “Hollywood glacier” by some. The unfortunate part is that the glacier is no longer accessible because there is danger of a nearby mountain crumbling and breaking up the ice on the glacier. Authorities don’t know if the rock fall will happen soon or in the next ten years. However, they are taking precautions by making Svínafellsjökull off limits. Well, at least for now. Svínafellsjökull Glacier Even though you can’t go on that particular glacier right now, you can imagine that you are beyond the wall if you walk on one of the other glaciers in the area. Falljökull and Skaftafellsjökull are awesome alternatives that tourism companies are using these days. Regardless of the glacier you choose, make sure you go with certified glacier guides to ensure that you have a safe and fun experience. The Fist of the First Men on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier Another scene from Game of Thrones that shows up in season 2 is when the show depicts Mýrdalsjökull glacier as the Fist of the First Men. The First Men are one of the three main ethnic groups that evolved into the people that make up Westeros. Well, the fictional people on the show. The Fist is a defense location that offers commanding views. In the fifth episode of season 2, you see the Knights Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men. They are using the Höfðabrekka hiking area near the glacier. Below is a video of the scene when the men arrive in the area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxzljfS4sa4 Season 3 The Many Faces of Mývatn During season 3, the Mývatn area in the north of the country was used a decent amount to depict different places in Game of Thrones. The Dimmuborgir lava field is where Mance Rayder, the leader of the Free Folk, aka the king beyond the wall, had his Wildling army set up camp. At Hverir geothermal area, part of the Diamond Circle, in the north, you see Samwell Tarly walking through what looks like a blizzard. There is snow on the ground but what is making the air look so gray and hard to navigate is actually the steam coming up from the natural bubbling hot springs in the area. It stinks of sulphur but at least he was warm. I visited Hverir this past December and I highly recommend going there. Yes, it smells pretty intense but you do kind of get used to it. What makes it worth a visit is the colors in this area and the sight of steam escaping the ground as if it were coming out of a hissing chimney. The whole area looks like an alien planet and it is absolutely fascinating. I have some videos of it on my Instagram account, if you want to check it out. Grjótagjá Cave: Where Jon Snow & Ygritte Cemented Their Love Grjótagjá cave Jon and Ygritte’s steamy love making session in the Grjótagjá cave in the Mývatn area is sweet but not entirely realistic if you want to reenact that scene.

Typically we don't double dip on pod topics, but with Game of Thrones continuing to spiral below the 50% on Rotten Tomatoes line, those who bend a knee to no man, r/freefolk, have spiritually recruited DYR North of the Wall. Or more accurately, there are just too many good front-page memes from r/freefolk for us to not talk about it, going into the final episode of the 2nd best fantasy franchise Hollywood export of all time. In the Redditsphere, there is more than one Game of Thrones specific sub, and at least a few are notably interesting. However, thanks to what some consider the worst episode in the entire 8 seasons of Game of Thrones, GoT meme-lords have steamed ahead of their contemporaries in the battle of Internet narratives. Plus, Darwinian evolution nudges the entirety of Alabama to have several less teeth than their American neighbors, u/dogboobes starts a new business, and u/itsyerdad loses his wallet live on the pod. This episode brought to you by the one ring to rule them all.
