Legendary artist and pioneering music producer Luc Van Acker might have made music history, he doesn't do nostalgia. With a career spanning over four decades, he has instinctively moved between solo projects; bands like Revolting Cocks, Ministry, Front 242, Arbeid Adelt! & many more and offered up cult collabs and genre-bending productions. His fearlessly fun, self-proclaimed 'insane', and experimental M.O. has navigated industry politics and backroom machinations for the longest time, yet he remains ahead of the wave, forever optimistically searching for new sounds.  On this episode, Luc and Dominique retrace his journey—from self-producing his first solo record in his bedroom to in-person straight-talk with William S. Burroughs and birthing industrial music together with Richard 23, Al Jourgensen and Wax Trax! Records.  He shares how experimenting with the first samplers put Belgian producers on the global map and why names like Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and Slipknot's Joey Jordison cite him as an inspiration. Luc also tells stories of how he got through his darkest days and what led him to his current 'Twin Peaks' -ish happy place. But not before he divulges how he roped himself into his first gig with Shriekback, what 80's Chicago was like and, of course, the inception of Revolting Cocks. Splash Stories welcomes Chris Connelly talking from his home in Chicago for a memorable musical memoir amongst the streets the guts and the character of Edinburgh. His latest 8 track album 'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1'  is a paean to his city- and a beautiful and profound one at that - capturing the essence of his love for it through his music his art and his heartfelt lyricism.. Each album comes with its own drawing created by Connelly himself. In Connelly's words : " the album is rich with strong feelings of then and now, memories that may or may not be accurate, locations, events, friends and lovers. I want the listener to walk with me quietly through endless days and nights, through the streets of Edinburgh in the early 1980s, over the tenement rooftops, up the hills with cans of Red Stripe and a well stoked hash pipe. Sitting in the Wee Red Bar, Bannermans, The Gilded Balloon, or the Royal Circus. Playing endless nights of music with my beloved Fini Tribe, dancing at the Hoochie Coochie Club. I miss it badly and have never felt at home anywhere except Edinburgh, where my soul continues to walk the New Town streets and climb the hills,"Check it all out and enjoy his reminiscences too in our Splash Stories conversation'Fini Chagall' https://youtu.be/JWBTtdYPDqM'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' albumhttps://chrisconnelly.bandcamp.com/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-volume-1Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/4jknruEhGgIBakqdA381lWApple Music https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-vol-1/1733352012Amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0CWN3WW9RLATEST RELEASES'The Birthday Poems' album feat. “The Last Mile” The Scottish-born Chris Connelly got his start with the electronic outfit Finitribe. Championed by John Peel, the inventive band did a long and harrowing UK in '88 and so arduous that tour was, it led to the shedding of three members, including Connelly, who left for the U.S. and landed in Chicago, where he fell in with the Revolting Cocks and Ministry. Connelly had hung out with the latter's Al Jourgensen in London so he knew him a bit, but once Connelly hit the states, he really immersed himself in the Wax Trax-powered industrial scene. Over the course of his career, Connelly has been affiliated with Pigface, Ministry, The Revolting Cocks, Die Warzau, Acid Horse, KMFDM, The Joy Thieves, PTP and The Damage Manual. And my friends, that's a partial list. His almost thirty album-long solo discography is a knockout, containing classic albums like Whiplash Boychild Shipwreck and Graveyard Sex. His newest effort Eulogy To Christa is a moving, stirring and deeply satisfying homage to Nico. Comprised of covers and original compositions, Eulogy To Christa is a heartfelt tribute to a fascinating artist. www.chrisconnelly.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers The Podcast www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast

In their latest journey down hard rock and heavy metal's Memory Lane, the boys are checking out supergroups - those bands formed by musos who made their names in other bands. There were some obvious ones to choose from - Bad Company, Audioslave and, erm, Revolting Cocks, for example - but the boys dived deep and came up with three outfits that were all new to at least one of them. Anything involving Sammy Hagar and Neil Schon was probably dependably good (or was it?) so they all felt comfortable with Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve's Through The Fire from 1983.   But then Mark rocked up with Dennis Stratton side project Lionheart and their eponymous 1984 debut, and Steve went full toto and picked a band that, in a different genre, might have had a lot in common with One Direction (insofar as they were manufactured for the purpose of achieving commercial success). It was promising to be an interesting chat ... www.entersadmen.co.uk

Life's like Sanskrit read to a pony... Lou Reed is the God of Rock & Roll, and his earth-shattering epic album "Magic and Loss" addresses mortality, pain, suffering, death, cancer, morphine, circumcision, and so much more, all in one effort. It is my favorite Lou Reed album, and it also happens to be the fave of Chris Connelly. Chris Connelly is no stranger to most people, he has played in Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Pigface, and various other projects that seem to have no end. Chris and I decided to discuss this album and why it made such a dent in our lives. He covered one of the songs from the record, and we just let Lou Re ed have the respect he deserved. All three were prominent figures in Scottish literature and culture since the 1950s who frequented the historical Rose Street Bars of Edinburgh. The Birthday Poems was produced by Chris Bruce who has worked with artists such as Seal, Aaron Neville, Bob Dylan, The Waterboys, Cheryl Crow and many others.  The description of the Birthday Poems and to purchase the album can be found on www.thebirthdaypoems.com For Chris Connelly, art only moves forward. I have been a fan of Chris Connelly since his days in Minstry, Pigface, Revolting Cocks, you get the idea. He has spun off his Industrial into a non traditional folk sound. Over 25 albums since he left Ministry, there is plenty to take in His current album "The Birthday Poems" is a purely Scottish experience from a tiny sliver to time in our history. With the vocal gift from the reclusive Scottish singer Monica Queen, the album is described as "This album is a fictionalized account of the romance between celebrated Scottish poet andauthor George Mackay Brown and his muse Stella Cartwright, as well as Stelle's friendship with Edinburgh born poet Stanley Roger Green, spanning three decades" We talk about the Scottish poetry "scene" in the 1950s, and the social paradigm around a muse who contributed so much to the culture, who is only now given the exposure she deserves. Balance that with his contributions to Hank Williams III and the Legendary Shack Shakers, to say nothing of all the other projects he’s been involved with (Firewater, USSA, Revolting Cocks, Pigface), and you have a body of work that is diverse, influential and important. Tomahawk returns with “Tonic Immobility,” the band’s first album in 8 years, on March 26. The count to Halloween continues as Parallax Views celebrates the ladies of horror movies otherwise known as "Scream Queens"! From Janet Leigh in Psycho to her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, a variety of actresses have appeared in scary movies over the years and made the role of women in horror a pivotal one to say the least. And, often times, the "Scream Queens" aren't just relegated to using their well-known superpowered lungs. Indeed many a horror film has featured females who fight back, especially in the form of the "Final Girl" trope, such as Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in the Scream franchise, and Alice Hardy (Adrienne King) in Friday the 13th among many others. So in order to celebrate the gals who add a feminine touch to the scary movies we all know and love I invited two actresses associated with the genre onto the program just in time for Halloween. That's right, it's another Parallax Views double feature! Two interviews for the price of one! First up...Linnea Quigley, the "Queen of the B's", joins us to discuss her long career in film and how she became one of the most recognizable "Scream Queens" of the 1980s due to her appearances in cult classics like Return of the Living Dead; Night of the Demons; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Graduation Day; Nightmare Sister; Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama; and Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Hell, she's even had the chance to pop out of Freddy Krueger's chest in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, a scene which has an interesting behind-the-scenes story you'll here in our conversation. And if that wasn't enough she's been the subject of documentaries (including the great Screaming in High Heels), appeared in music videos by rock bands like the Revolting Cocks and Motorhead, written an autobiography (The Linnea Quigley Bio & Chainsaw Book) and a memoir (I'm Screaming As Fast As I Can: My Life in B-Movies), and has her very own workout video aptly entitled the Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout. Seriously, how many Scream Queens have their very own workout video? As I say to Linnea during our conversation, "Eat your heart out Jamie Lee Curtis!"We cover all the bases we can in fast-paced half hour conversation with Linnea that manages to touch on her surreal experiences in Hollywood (including a marriage proposal story you'll never forget, the trials and tribulations of having make-up FX put on you, a tale of topless guerrilla filmmaking, the famous "deer antlers" murder scene in Silent Night, Deadly Night, and what it's like doing nudity on camera), her experiences in the punk scene (Linnea was as regular at punk rock club The Masque in L.A.), and her love of animals that has led her to vegetarianism and animal rights advocacy! All that and much more with the "Queen of the B's" Linnea Quigley!Then...In our second interview we speak with actress, journalist, and teacher Deborah Voorhees (aka Debi Sue Voorhees). As fans of the 80s slasher movie juggernaut that made Jason Voorhees a household name will tell you, Deborah portrayed the "Tina", who suffered a grisly fate at by way of garden shears in 1985's Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Beginning. Since then, as previously mentioned, Deborah has gone on to careers in journalism and education, but lately horror movie fans have brought her back to the world of cinema. In fact, as of the recording of this interview, Deborah has just finished editing her directorial debut, 13: Fanboy. Returning to her horror roots, Deborah's 13: Fanboy is about a deranged fan who stalks the cast of the Friday the 13th series. The film features such Friday the 13th alumni as the original Friday the 13th's Adrienne King, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood's Lar Park Lincoln and Jennifer Banko, two different Jason Voorhees actors in the form of Kane Hodder and C.J. Graham, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning's Ron Sloan, Friday the 13th Part III's Tracie Savage, and even Corey Feldman (who fans will remember appeared in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning). Hell, the movie even features a turn by Debra Sullivan who wrote the script for one of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies and an appearance by Dee Wallace of Joe Dante's The Howling, Steven Speilberg's E.T., Critters, Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem, Stephen King's Cujo, and many other fan favorite genre features! Deborah describes the movie as both a psychological thriller that'll be enjoyed by viewers outside of the Friday the 13th fandom as well a a flick that promises a few good throwback and slasher moments for longtime fans of the Friday the 13th franchise. In this conversation Deborah and talk both about her experiences with Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning as well as the exciting project 13: Fanboy. Also, Deborah explains how her teaching career was abruptly ended when her students found out she was in Friday the 13th Part V. A few boys passed around pictures of her nude scene in the movie and this led to administrative officials to firing her just weeks before her students' graduation. But, believe, it or not this story has a touching end and an emotional moment between Deborah and her students, including one of the male students who passed around the pictures in question. All that and more on this special "INVASION OF THE SCREAMS QUEENS!" edition of Parallax Views! This Episode Brought to You By:The War State:The Cold War Origins of the Military-Industrial Complex and the Power Elite, 1945-1963byMichael SwansonofThe Wall Street Window

In his four decades writing songs and playing them, English singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock has earned a devoted fan base (especially within the New Sounds Staff.) Hitchcock (whose excellent solo album Eye turned thirty this year) has a penchant for winning melodies, often centered around buzzy-jangly-crunchy-chiming guitars, in clever and classic arrangements that dance around pop, rock, and twang. He has an expansive and expressive vocal range, and puts those pipes to work in song forms that never fail to delight and surprise. Hitchcock’s songs can mix gleeful surrealism, sexual frustration, drinking, death, sadness, spiders, snakes, and the occasional movie quote. Now East Nashville-based, he’s released numerous albums with his bands The Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, and the Venus 3. Never one to be at a loss for words, and possessed of the greatest patterned shirt collection in all of folk-alt-psych-pop-dom, the singer-songwriter, guitarist, harmonica player, and pianist Robyn Hitchcock visited the WNYC studios back in 2006 with his then brand-new electric band, the Venus 3. Fun thing about numbers, the Venus 3 included half of the Minus 5: REM's Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows) and the late drummer Bill Rieflin (formerly of Ministry and Revolting Cocks.) Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 play songs from the record, Olé! Tarantula, and waltz, nay tango, around conversation for this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast (from the archives.) - Caryn Havlik

Now fourteen albums into their thirty five year career it’s certainly debatable how well Ministry have aged with time.  In 1989 there was no debate, The Mind is A Terrible Thing to Taste was a sledgehammer to the brain of every fan of heavy music.  Punks, metalheads, goths and Industrial kids united around their buzzsaw guitars, rapid fire drum machines and war movie samples.  It’s safe to say many (if not most) of those early fans have moved on and their copies of the album has spent decades gathering dust (yours truly included).  For this episode, we've pulled it out of storage to give it a critical spin to see how it holds up against 2019 ears.       RECOMMENDED LISTENING   Episode Recommendations   Revolting Cocks  Big Sexy Land https://open.spotify.com/album/2uk1BH7Dl6X880vOADBw5a?si=PvnMvKaVRjGiLHwHvi0KLg Beers, Steers & Queers https://open.spotify.com/album/6exJQPc4h7vvicCz8vztRv?si=OOp3Y5RHS_uFqc-hiKD3zg   1,000 Homo DJs https://open.spotify.com/album/59or2rVv97PQ4dS45ohNlQ?si=rwoPV8vjQwmWMDjn5JIN_A   Pailhead https://open.spotify.com/album/5H3cH7r2e1QFfh8ul2ui7j?si=pSaM5kiBSUSxFVAO2Dh92A   Lard The Power of Lard https://open.spotify.com/album/4c3GEruFdVwrC5jzcj9632?si=e-zFx_1zTTOotTOv6fMTWQ The Last Temptation of Reid  https://open.spotify.com/album/2rTILylL2lITqrlEWmXjx1?si=oCJJhXM7TpmLOc24OC9g-g   Movie Industrial Accident:  The Story of Wax Trax Records https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6181974/?ref_=nv_sr_5?ref_=nv_sr_5     What We’re Listening To   Propagandhi Victory Lap https://open.spotify.com/album/01lJjCxlvrddTRzIbtKHmP?si=7X-Kts5qQCmO1Sv6l2_vgg   Tool Undertow https://open.spotify.com/album/3Esn6LoXuWtLZNYq8FCzr0?si=hV1MNRD2TVamKgXtiybzTw   The Pioneers Long Shot https://open.spotify.com/album/3guaf19rofHUFSIGVBaWPQ?si=bsYPu8FOSdiix_eHrSd3_Q   huntsmanhill.com #huntsmanhill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg

Chris Connelly special talking about life in music, Finitribe, the Revolting Cocks, Ministry & much much more Chris Connelly  became famous for his industrial music work of the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly his involvement with the Revolting Cocks and Ministry. He has since established himself as an alternative singer-songwriter, and continues to release solo albums. Connelly began his music career in 1980 with the formation of Finitribe. Through subsequent years he fronted or was heavily involved with numerous notable industrial, dance, and new wave acts. In 2008, Connelly published a memoir of his early years in the music industry, Concrete, Bulletproof, Invisible, and Fried: My Life As A Revolting Cock. It describes his professional debut in Finitribe, meeting Al Jourgensen in London, his involvement with the Revolting Cocks, Ministry, PTP, Acid Horse, Killing Joke, and Pigface, and the development of his solo career. In contrast to his industrial roots, Connelly explored various genres in his solo works. In 2013, he has started two projects more in the vein of industrial: Cocksure, with Jason C. Novak (Czar and Acumen Nation), and Bells into Machines, with Paul Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks, and Lard).

Finitribe special with David Miller in conversation The band formed in Edinburgh in 1984 by Chris Connelly, John Vick, Andy McGregor, Philip Pinsky, David Miller and Simon McGlynn. Initially a post-punk guitar outfit, the band released a debut E.P. Curling and Stretching on their own Finiflex label in the summer of 1984, graduating to their first John Peel Session in 1985 before rethinking their whole approach in the mid 80s. Tired of the conventional drums, bass and guitar set up, they acquired a sampler and began experimenting with electronic music. The result was Let The Tribe Grow, an EP released on the Glasgow label Cathexis and featuring 'De Testimony', a seminal dance floor anthem for the original Balearic/Acid House generation. Subsequently, they signed to Chicago label Wax Trax and released two singles, "I Want More" (a cover of the Can song) and "Make it Internal", raising their profile in the States and resulting in extensive radio and club success. A long and arduous "toilet" tour of the UK in 1988 led to the departure of three members – including Connelly who relocated to the States and joined the Revolting Cocks and Ministry – and a parting of the ways with Wax Trax Records. This in turn resulted in a resurrection of the Finiflex label and a distribution deal with Fast Forward for a long-awaited debut album, Noise Lust and Fun. The band was now made up of Pinsky, Vick and Miller along with various contributions from Little Annie, Rosanne Erskine and Wilf Plum. A series of remix EP's proved their electronic and dance floor credentials and brought indie chart success. The band met and signed a long-term publishing deal with Andy Heath (director of Beggars Banquet and Momentum Publishing), allowing the band to grow and develop without the constant need for advances from record companies. After signing a new deal with One Little Indian the band with encouragement from label boss Derek Birkett ran into controversy almost immediately with the 'Animal Farm' EP. Subverting the nursery rhyme "Old MacDonald" for the purposes of berating the similarly titled hamburger outlet, Finitribe (as they were now known) offered up a flavour of the anti-consumerist stance prevalent on new album Grossing 10k (1989). The subsequent threat of legal action was not exactly helped by a "Fuck off McDonald's" poster and T-shirt campaign. The band continued to develop stronger links with the electronic music world for their next single and album. Andrew Weatherall produced and remixed the single "101" (1991) along with Graham Massey from 808 State. Justin Robertson then worked with the band to remix and produce the singles "Ace Love Deuce" and "Forevergreen" (1992). These singles all featured on the band's most critically and commercially successful album, An Unexpected Groovy Treat (1992), the last album they were to record for One Little Indian. The success of this album allowed the band to re launch their 'Finiflex' label and the in-house production team recorded and released many singles including those by Justin Robertson, State of Flux, Ege Bam Yasi and Sparks. A Finiflex Compilation album And Away They Go was released to critical acclaim in 1993. The band was redeveloping their studio complex in Leith during this period and coordinated all management, recording, press and merchandise from there. After leaving One Little Indian the band further developed their studio complex and looked for a new recording deal. With the assistance of Tom Watkins (Pet Shop Boys, East 17) the band negotiated a deal with Pete Tong at London/FFRR. This deal allowed for the completion of the state of the art recording studio in Leith and facilitated complete independence for the recording of their next album. For the writing and pre-production of the band's fourth album they relocated to a small crofting settlement called Sheigra. near Kinlochbervie in the north west of Scotland. In 1994 the band released the single "Brand New" and although a minor hit the relationship with London/FFRR was cooling. A further single "Love Above" and the album Sheigra were released in 1995. The band followed this with a tour with Sparks and then their own headlining tour of the UK. By early 1996 David Miller and Philip Pinsky split from John Vick, the former continuing with Finitribe and John Vick successfully continuing with the studio complex Finiflex. The slimmed down Finitribe, now operating from house built on the side of a volcano, started a new label U.G.T and released an LP by Acid House maverick Ege Bam Yasi. While looking for a new label and a new singer Finitribe went to Essex to work with former Prodigy collaborator Jason Byrne. The result was the EP Squelch and the meeting up with future producer Witchman(John Roome). For a short while the band hooked up with Chas Smash (Madness) as manager, this indirectly led to a meeting with Korda Marshall and a deal was struck with Infectious/ Mushroom Records(home of Garbage and Ash). Philip and David recruited a band and picked up some guitars and drums. The band's fifth album 'Sleazy Listening' was recorded in Edinburgh with John Roome (Witchman) producing. It featured Paul Haig, Little Annie, Niroshini Thambar, Chris Ross, John Roome and Katie Morrison. The album mixed electronica and live instrumentation and received critical acclaim. Melody Maker stating that, " If Finitribe had lived and worked in Bristol they would have won the Mercury Music prize by now". The album was launched with a sell out gig at The Shooting Gallery, Edinburgh with Davy Henderson's Nectarine No. 9. The band toured the UK with their most successful gigs for several years, headlining the ICA in London. They recorded the first ever John Peel live session and released three further singles for Infectious. This was the band's last album and tour. Their last gig was at a sell out Bath Moles Club in the summer of 1998. Other interests and priorities meant that Philip and David put Finitribe to one side . One more single was released 'Bored' (2000). In January 2014 the band reissued "De Testimony" on limited 12" vinyl and have plans to reissue further classics from their catalogue.

Cold Waves continues to grow and gather momentum each year. This year's event (9/23-9/24 at Metro) is stacked, featuring performances from Meat Beat Manifesto, Clock DVA, The Cocks, Pig, 16Volt and more. The kickoff show on 9/22 at Double Door features nothing less than the 30th anniversary performance of the reunited Stabbing Westward. For this episode, Novak sits shotgun for a trip to the Fulton Market location of taqueria/sandwich shop Cemitas Puebla. To summarize: The tacos are poquito and the cemitas have a grande amount of bread. Over dinner, Novak talks about the evolution of Cold Waves, focusing on the memory of Jamie Duffy ("I think he would have been overjoyed at this"). He says the success of Cold Waves feels bittersweet ("You're constantly reminded that this shouldn't even be happening"). We also talk about Cold Waves kickoff band Stabbing Westward's ascent in the 90s. Novak says, "I remember (Acumen) being the junior version chasing after them." We chat about the 90s scene, industrial music, Wax Trax, Revolting Cocks, and Pop Will Eat Itself. Novak also talks about his charity, Darkest Before Dawn, which aims to provide support to Chicago's service industry and live entertainment workers, people whose schedules and isolation leave them "susceptible to depression, anxiety and suicide."
