Summer Sailing in Belize, with a crew of ladies.By 2soon2no – Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories. Dateline: Hoboken, New JerseySaturday nights were my favorite.I suppose that is true for most people around the world, and I had much in common with many of those lives... but for a stripper, Saturday is often the end of the stripper week.Peeling always made me horny, and finishing the night in the privacy of the Emerald Lounge, entertaining a married couple in their 40's, out on 'date night', had me lusting for a lamp post! The guy hadn't even touched me, but I always let the ladies have more freedom. The drinks were running up a big tab, but this guy wasn't going to be able to keep his pants on, so he ended the session early. I was so wet, I could just strangle her and take her place, but I have more discipline than that.I finished my night dancing in the main room. Sharon and Pam were entertaining some guy they had danced for before, and I was going back to their place when the night ended.I was anxious for another trip to the sun, when Pam told me about Seafaring Delight Charters. They are a Sail Touring company working out of Belize. For the right woman, they offer a free sailing vacation in the Caribbean and in return, they must crew the ship. For the right man, they offer a sailing delight, with lusty women running the ship! The implication was obvious, but not stated. The ladies had to submit a 30 second video, while the men had no such requirement. Hmm. Then the price tag! Starting at $4,000 per week!Pam vouched for the company. Her sister learned how to sail with this company, and goes back every year. She always has fun, and has never been forced to do anything she doesn't want to do.We got together after work Saturday night, and had a blast in their apartment above The Pizza House.Greta came upstairs, with her full crew, but most of them kept to the porch, where smoking was expected. After a few puffs, I decided to check with the girls, to see when we were going to make our video.Greta and her latest guy were chatting with them, in the living room."Barry, are you giving Greta what she needs, down there?" Sharon asked, indicating with her extended hand, towards Greta's crotch."Whatever she desires Miss., she is too beautiful to resist," he replied, with his face turning red. Barry was the same age as Greta, around 50, and he wasn't comfortable talking about such matters."Shush child!" Greta laughingly chastised her stripper friend, but rose to excuse herself."Barry has something to do too, ladies," she took her man's hand and pulled him to his feet, then they headed home.Pam opened up her laptop, and set the program running."Hi, we three girls would like to learn how to sail, and we understand customer service," she finished with a smile.Sharon continued with her, rehearsed line, "We know the rules, and are willing to 'play' within them." Another flirtatious smile..."...and though we hope for sunny sky's, we know how to enjoy a rainy day." I finished, with a wink.A bit bold, but we were hoping for an early spot.We were happy with the first take, and we managed to fill out the documentation side, before the session tumbled into their king size bed.Two weeks later, to the day, we celebrated our Saturday night, in the traditional way, but this time we would be flying out of O'Shea in the morning, bound for Belize City, via Dallas.Simone honked about 10 in the morning, and we were ready, but not downstairs yet. She was pissed, to not be coming with us, but we hadn't offered. Besides, she only liked women, so her narrower sexual preference might hamper our chance to grab a spot this late in the season. The flight was uneventful, but the private car to the waterfront headquarters of Seafaring Delight Charters drove so slow, and the air conditioning was so weak, we opened up the windows. We saw the boat, first. It was probably twice the size and three times the height of their little shop.I tipped the guy like a tourist, I was so excited to be out of the chilly drizzly North, and into the land of bikinis and umbrella drinks. Our Captain met us on the dock after we filled out some waivers. At first sight, she was a forty something native woman, with a trim body, and a weathered face. The commanding type, that needed a month or two to get to know. She took us onboard, and went over the rules first. We were to each bunk with a guest, but what happened in that bunk was totally up to us. We were not supposed to spend all of our time with just one of the guests, since there was four of them, and only 3 of us.Our first priority was the safety of the boat, so Marny showed us the ropes, literally. All three of us had a bit of experience sailing, so we knew the terminology, but the sail profile of a big catamaran is quite different from the vessels that we had learned on."We are not in a hurry ladies, if we don't get there today, we will get there on another day, or the one after that," she said with a chuckle. She could smile! We went below to get our bikinis on, and got back just as our guests came down the dock, looking even more out of place than we did. These four men were in their 30's, with one at maybe 40. One had shoulders like a bodybuilder, and one was 40 pounds overweight while the other two looked average. All 4 wore Hawaiian shirts and matching shorts, and they all had a duffel bag over their shoulder, and a small carry-on.Instead of introductions, the Captain demanded an instant departure. She called over Phil, by name."Phil, you assist me at the helm. You other three pair up with the crew, and get those lines in," the Captain gave clear, unaccented commands.Within minutes, she had the engines running, and with expert handling, she pulled us from the dock, and motored us away from shore, destination...fun."Shylo, please take Mark and his gear to where the two of you will be sleeping tonight," Marny shouted."Pam, you have Paul, and Sharon, you get David," let's get that gear stowed ladies, and take a minute to get to know each other."Mine was the starboard fore cabin, though they were all the same."Shylo, is an unusual name, where are you from beautiful," Mark asked, while he plopped his bag at the foot of the double bed. I couldn't imagine sleeping with someone in that bed without being intimate, but I didn't expect that to be a problem for any of us."I was born and raised in Michigan, but the three of us met where we work in New Jersey," I responded. "Pam has a cousin that recommended this place, and we thought we deserved a few weeks in the sun, so here we are.""Are you horny Mark, cause I sure am," I casually asked, and watched his face, as it went from wonder to joy in 5 seconds, so even without a response, I dropped to my knees. The ceiling is too low over the bunks to do any upright fun on the bed, but there was enough room if you're willing to adapt. I smoothly pulled Mark's light flowery shorts to the floor, revealing a fully erect 6 inches.I didn't feel the need to use a condom for a suck, so I pressed down on it, sucking lightly, while running my tongue side to side as it pressed down my throat for the last inch.To my surprise, it was not fully erect, it grew another inch or so longer, and at least a half inch around, while Mark's hands lightly held my face."This is going to be the trip of a lifetime!" Mark announced with glee.He did not take long, maybe two minutes? I did not expect him to hold back, and he certainly did not, as he spasmed a thick and powerful load, mostly in my mouth, but I didn't mind when some smeared on my cheek.I wiped it clean, then told Mark that I had to help the Captain, and left him to put his things, and his thingy away.First, I had to get rid of the top, and get some lotion on my milky white tits."Captain, can I take a minute to get some lotion on," I asked, as I popped up at the helm."I'm sure that Phil will give you a hand Shylo, maybe two," Marny laughed, and nodded to her helper, "You can show Phil to his bed first.""Perfect," I said, and I picked up one of his carry-on's to lead the way."We could hear you and Mark," Phil began, as he pressed one bag into a cupboard without emptying it. "...are you ladies as fun as you look."I dropped his other bag and pressed into his personal space."Well, I can't' see the future Phil, but I think that you and your friends will be inspired to leave a big tip, and... speaking of big tips..."Phil was the older one, with an average build, but his penis was a little bigger than average."I'm really horny now Phil, would you mind fucking me?" I asked, but I didn't wait for an answer, as I scampered onto the bed.Phil paused, to take off his shirt, so I slipped out of my little thong too."How did we get this lucky!" he gleefully announced, as he slid onto the bed, next to me.I tried to keep quiet, as I enjoyed my first orgasm, but I shouldn't have bothered, as Phil made such a raucous that everyone aboard knew what was going on!When we came out to the galley, Pam and Mark were prepping for lunch."Any drinks needed up there," I shouted."We have a beer locker up here, so no," Marny responded.I saw that Pam had taken on my idea of a uniform, topless!Phil put some lotion on me, including a careful massage into my breasts, then I did the same for him, with less of a concentration on his nipples, but I did play with his bulging penis, enough to make him a little self conscious in his tight swimsuit.Sharon came up with David, but he should have been called Goliath! With the shirt off, he was pretty amazing, tanned and toned. His washboard stomach was especially firm.He wore billowing shorts, which suggested to me that he was not as well hung, but I wasn't going to let that stop me, when I got the chance to be with this one!Paul emerged from the entry, having turned to get his bulk through the passage. He was still wearing his Hawaiian shirt."Let's get some lotion on you Paul," I suggested, picking up my high powered tube of cream."Thanks Shylo, I wish I had a chance to put some on you," he said, while his trunks started to tent out a little."Don't worry Paul, this stuff is safe to ingest, so you can suck on my titties, that you admire so much, then you can put some fresh cream on them," I teased.I really needed to do him first, before he lobster-ed in front of our very eyes!I covered his face, and neck, then removed his shirt to put a lot on his very white chest and back. Continuing down I covered his legs too, and I became very aware of his monster, as it peeked out of the side of his shorts.I turned to see if the Captain was watching, and she was. I watched her for a few seconds, and she gave me a nod, so I continued. The shorts came down fast, and I was very pleased to find that he was not a monster in diameter, but he had to be ten inches long! Again I turned to the Captain, and she was staring too.I had to use both hands to help my mouth with this one, but he didn't take any longer than his friend, as he delivered a modest squirt inside of five minutes.I stood back up, and smiled at my new friend, letting his cum trail down my chin, and over my perky tits."We are on water rations for bathing," the Captain shouted. If you get too stinky, you will need to use salt water to rinse, or wait till you can swim."There is a hose at both aft transoms, for rinsing," Marny continued, and motioned with her head in case I didn't know where the aft of the boat was.I gave myself a rinse, but I knew that salt water was not a great rinse for the vagina, and when it dried you felt like you had rolled in the sand. This was the rainy season, so I only had to wait, and a beautiful sunset also brought a squall that rinsed us all off, as we danced around the bow, and bounced on the trampolines. After we set anchor, Marny went below, and pulled out a big bag of marinated grouper, fresh from last night's catch. She asked Pam to put together a salad, and she headed back upstairs to the grill on the port transom. After a great meal, we played the music loud, and drank umbrella drinks till everyone headed for a bed. I saw Marny disappear down the fore hatch that only goes to an equipment locker and a short, narrow bunk.I put Mark to bed, with a smile on his face, and I had about two hours sleep, when the rolling of the boat woke me up.I thought that I had better check in on Paul, to see if he was lonely, and feeling neglected, but I didn't want to knock, so I turned off the hall light and quietly opened the cabin door.
Building a better Hoboken. Caleb Stratton, Assistant Business Administrator and Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Hoboken, NJ joined the podcast to talk about storm resilience and infrastructure. A fabulous collective of musicians from Hoboken New Jersey, "Wild Carnation" got together and made two incredible albums in the early 1990s. Professional musicians, had a great time with this project, the music was outstanding when first released, and they have now remastered the album "Tricycle" for Record Store Day 2023, with some demos, and a live set. We talked about the music as it happened, and how they managed to keep the band going amidst so many other bands they all play in. "Tricycle" is one that I wish I heard when it was released, it is a winner of an album, and its re release packs a punch, and is now out for the first time on vinyl. They are a spinoff of "The Feelies" (if you like the Velvet Underground, you gotta check them out). I spoke with Brenda Sauter, Christ O'Donovan, and Rich Barnes, about the music, the history behind it and how they managed getting all of the tracks together for this re-release. facebook youtube #thefeelies #davewecker #hoboken #bluemoonfest #weckerfest #wildcarnation #thestranglers #newjersey #tomwaits #bonjovi #theweddingpresent #cinerama #thecranberries
Greetings Gotham City! It's me, the classic character, Joker-Riddler-Penguin! And I'm here to wreck all your trains! This will all make sense in approximately 45 minutes to an hour but in the meantime HELLO and welcome weirdos to another episode of KEEP IT WEIRD with Ashley Casseday & Lauren Ogle. Each week we get together to teach each other strange science, tell creepy stories, and share magical thoughts and this week we've got quite the variety for you. Ashley is starting us off with a WHAT IF GOD WAS ONE OF US by teaching us the Gospel of Mary Magdanele and how her ideas of the Christian faith shifted by her own reading of these amazing biblical books that didn't make it into the final draft of the bible. Lauren TRIES to lighten the mood by talking about how plants in A BIT O' BIOLOGY might be able to talk and hear but it ends up being kind of depressing because we realize how many plants we've killed over the years. Ashley brings us around to an UNSOLVED MYSTERY as we try to solve the case of the runaway train in Hoboken New Jersey in 2016 and the ominous evil Dr Seuss message that preceded the crash. And Lauren finishes us off with an (as usual) very special DERP CORNER where we try to understand why a man in a high speed chase would choose the slowest getaway car in history. The sought after genre we know as True Crime today began in New Jersey in the year 1841. When Mary Rogers, the Beautiful Cigar Girl was found floating in the Hudson next to Sybil's Cave in Hoboken. Her murder remains unsolved today.
PreambleMy wife and I recently packed our bags and relocated to New Jersey! Texas was good for us but now we are on to our next adventure in Greater New York City. Would love to meet up if you are in the area. It’s been fascinating observing people’s reactions when I say I work in crypto. Some acquaintances immediately start walking me through their crypto portfolio while others clutch their pearls and flee for dear life. Jokes aside, I am often the first person they have met who works in the space. Sometimes, I get the sense they don’t quite know what to make of me. Crypto’s unsettling reputation has not been helped by the recent market downturn, hacks, and bankruptcies. My singular refrain has been that “the underlying technology could solve real-world problems, focus on that”. But you can’t bury your head in the sand and ignore the world around you. If you fail to study history, then you are bound to repeat the same mistakes. We are living through the early days of Crypto’s history. Let’s learn from this moment lest we fall prey to the same dragons. Heartache 💔Celsius - a prominent centralized crypto lending company - filed for bankruptcy on July 13, 2022. Customers had been unable to withdraw their funds since June 12, 2022. It now looks unlikely that they will ever reclaim all their funds. Some devastated customers have written letters to the judge presiding over the bankruptcy proceedings. These letters are gut-wrenching. Here are excerpts from two of them:But how did we get here?Celsius: Background🔎Celsius was founded in 2017 by Alex Mashinsky (CEO), Daniel Leon (former COO, now Chief Strategy Officer), and Nuke Goldstein (CTO) in Hoboken NJ. Celsius provides customers with high interest-bearing accounts for cryptocurrencies and crypto-collateral-backed loans. High interest-bearing crypto accountsExample 1: Johnny cashed out some of his cash savings and stock investments to buy 1 bitcoin on Coinbase. He then sees an ad from Celsius offering 17% interest rates for customers who deposit bitcoin with the company. He looks at his regular bank account and is reminded that Bank of America is only offering 0.1% interest. It’s a no-brainer! Johnny moves his 1 bitcoin from Coinbase to Celsius to earn high interest. Crypto-collateral-backed loansExample 2: The price of bitcoin has more than doubled. Johnny is feeling good about his investment. Time to finally buy that engagement ring he has been eyeing. The price of bitcoin is $50k but he only needs $10k. However, Johnny doesn’t want to sell his bitcoin because he believes the price will be much higher in the future. Step 1: He transfers 0.3BTC valued at $15k as collateral for a $10k cash loan.Note: (a) There are no interest payments on the loan but he has 1-year to pay it back. (b) There are no credit checks because the loan is overcollateralized with a loan to value (LTV) ratio of 67% => $10k loan / $15k crypto collateral. Step 2: Celsius will monitor the LTV ratio as the price of bitcoin continues to fluctuate. If the price of bitcoin drops deeply, Johnny will have 24 hours to add more collateral or pay down the loan if the LTV hits the predetermined threshold ex 90%. If Johnny fails to bring the LTV back to an acceptable range say ~67% within the prescribed time then Celsius has the right to sell his collateral for cash. Besides lending, Celsius generated revenue from token sales, bitcoin mining, and discretionary trading of cryptocurrencies. As of June 2022, Celsius had lent out $8 billion to customers and had $12 billion in assets under management. The company had 450 employees and reportedly 1.7 million account holders. How did it go wrong?⚡TLDR: Celsius CEO said the company went bankrupt due to “..certain poor asset deployment decisions”. Basically, weak risk management. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be an isolated incident, rather, tales of poor decision-making and under-resourcing are emerging from different parts of the organization. On the surface, the main thrust of Celsius business model was sound. It’s the same model that banks have used for centuries: pay interest to depositors then loan those funds out to another entity at a higher interest rate. Then you simply profit off the difference in interest rates. Celsius grew rapidly by offering up to a 17% interest rate on crypto deposits. At its peak, it had $24B of assets under management. This helped it raise $750M in Nov 2021 at $3.3B valuation. That fundraising round was led by the second largest pension fund in Canada. But it all came crashing down when Celsius filed for bankruptcy due to the $1.2B hole in its balance sheet. Celsius reported its total assets were $4.3B but total liabilities were $5.5B. Of the $5.5B liabilities, Celsius owes its customers $4.7B but does not have the assets to pay them. The company only has $125M cash on hand. Much of the $4.3B of assets are said to be Celsius’ holdings of its own crypto token which has dropped in value from a peak of $7.7 in June 2021 to $0.9 in July 2022. There are questions about the current market value of the $4.3B listed assets and fears the actual is lower than what has been reported. Where did risk management fail?We are still learning about the failures that led to Celsius bankruptcy. Here’s what I have gathered thus far: 1. Failure of leadershipCelsius executives reportedly told the Chief Human Resource Officer NOT to run background checks on the incoming CFO, Yaron Shalem. This is a major red flag 🚩 In Nov 2021, Shalem was arrested in Israel and charged with money laundering at his previous company. Perhaps stronger controls could have identified a CFO who might have steered Celsius away from taking on increasing levels of risk. But ultimately the CEO is responsible. 2. Under resourcing Disruptors don’t color within the lines. They dream up new industries and take risks executing their visions. This is the nature of technological disruption. Uber and Airbnb are great examples of disruptors who launched products ahead of supporting laws, rules and regulations. The Silicon Valley swagger to move quickly and break things has produced results….but one wonders if it is a fit for financial services. Celsius reportedly only had 3 compliance professionals serving 1.7 million account holders. Some banks serving fewer customers might have 10 to 30x compliance professionals. A former Celsius compliance employee shared how the department was seen as a cost center and not a strategic partner for the business. One could extrapolate and imagine that the same attitude of under-resourcing likely applied to risk management too. 3. Poor fund managementCelsius CEO said in retrospect, they made poor fund deployment decisions. These decisions primarily fall into two camps: (a) over-leveraged positions and (b) over-exposure to stETH. (a) Over—leveraged positions: Celsius loaned out depositors’ funds on MakerDAO, a decentralized lending platform. One loan is ~$550M. This loan is overcollateralized like the loans Celsius itself issues. One challenge is that the price of Bitcoin has tumbled more than 60% since the 2021 highs. As a result, Celsius has had to pay down the loan or provide more collateral to bring the LTV back in range, otherwise, the entire $550M collateral would be liquidated. Celsius likely used new customer deposits to secure the collateral consisting of old customer deposits. Celsius came close to losing $550M a couple of times. It has reportedly lost smaller amounts due to insufficient liquidity to shore up the LTV ratio.A sound risk management approach would have considered that crypto prices could fall significantly and perhaps limit Celsius exposure to this high-risk strategy. (b) Over-exposure to stETHCelsius used customer deposits to acquire over $400M of stETH, an irresponsible amount given that no counterparties hold a comparable amount to trade with. stETH is an illiquid receipt stoke for staked ether. stETH is a derivative of ether with each stETH representing one staked ether on the new Ethereum blockchain. However, the price of stETH and the price of ether decoupled in recent months, stETH now has a 3% discount at the time of writing. A sound risk management approach would have considered whether Celsius should have used user’s deposits to acquire stETH, and if decided to, there could have been controls to limit the amount of exposure to this illiquid asset in Celsius portfolio. What next for Celsius customers? ⏭Celsius presented itself like a bank but operated more like a hedge fund. Many customers did not read the fine print in Celsius terms and conditions. Reading through now would yield several realizations. Uninsured depositsDepositors at US banks are protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). If a US bank goes bankrupt, all depositors’ funds are insured for up to $250k. Unfortunately, Celsius is NOT a bank and did not hold any insurance for depositor’s funds. Section 13 of the Celsius user agreement explicitly states that if the company goes bankrupt, customers may not be able to recover ANY funds. Bankruptcy claimsCelsius customers are filing bankruptcy claims. Some have also written letters petitioning the judge to release funds to them. Interestingly, although Celsius is headquartered in Hoboken NJ, the bankruptcy suit was filed in New York’s Southern District. Judges in this district are thought to be more savvy and experienced with major bankruptcies having previously handled notable cases like Merril Lynch and Bernie Maddoff. Unfortunately, it’s not looking good for customers. What lessons have been learned? 📔Not your keys, not your coinsMy friends who have been in crypto for several years frequently admonish everyone to move their holdings off centralized exchangers like Coinbase and lending platforms like BlockFi and Celsius. This episode has made the reasons painfully obvious. It’s clear to see why they recommend one self custody crypto holdings in a cold wallet. Leadership mattersIt looks like Celsius executives lost their heads in the ecstasy of the bull market. They kept on layering on high risk moves perhaps imagining themselves to be invincible. But truth be told, I think the rot started way before the crypto bull market. The absence of background checks for senior executives, the under-resourcing of compliance are symptoms of a culture that turns its nose at the modern financial services industry. I agree that there are some financial services which are ripe for disruption but there are also risk management practices and standard operating procedures which have successfully safeguarded the interest of customers. These mustn’t be discarded with the bath water. Please do considerable research as you invest your funds. Look at the background and statements of the leaders. Sometimes people who are undisciplined with finances reveal themselves to be undisciplined with their words too.Real human impact1.7 million affected account holders may never fully recover their funds. This would undoubtedly leave a lasting bad impression. Some of the stories are simply heart-breaking. There’s the story of a worker close to retirement who sold off their stocks and bonds and deposited everything into Celsius. There are countless stories of families who put decades of life savings into these accounts. Some people will never recover financially. It must be taking a heavy emotional toll too. I fear, a few people may even take their own lives similar to the suicides following the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929.DiversifyPlease do NOT put all of your eggs in one basket. Diversify to reduce your exposure to any one platform and any one company. Consider moving some or all of your crypto holdings into multiple cold wallets and securely store them in waterproof, fireproof, and tamperproof environments. Risk management is a differentiatorCrypto has been pulling in top talent from a variety of backgrounds. Sometimes I sense a tension between the tech-forward move fast crowd and the deliberate, cautious, and risk averse financial services crowd. But we need both legs to run into the future. The Celsius meltdown has given me a renewed appreciation for risk and compliance. In recent days, crypto lending companies have been at pains to explain their risk management approach and distance themselves from Celsius. I expect there could be a flight to quality, with consumers gravitating to more established and regulated providers. There is an opportunity for banks to make a move here. More curious about DeFiHumans are fallible. People get greedy and risky, then bad things happen. This is not limited to crypto. It happens across every industry. One of the beautiful things about decentralized finance (DeFi) is that it runs on smart contracts aka code. It takes the human out of the equation and executes based on the written code. But no system is infallible. DeFi solves for one risk - human behvaior - while heightening another risk: hackers. DeFi is poised to continue growth and eventually will underpin a chunky slice of the mass market.Brace yourself for more regulationSociety functions around a set of rules of engagement. There are consequences when you break those rules. Every industry needs regulation. Crypto is no different. I hope that the regulation is thoughtful and not a knee-jerk reaction. I hope the regulation would seek to protect the consumer, not prevent the consumer from engaging with crypto. I hope the regulation is crafted in partnership with industry, seeking to support technology advancement and not strangle the baby in the bassinet. I’m optimistic. Many advances we take for granted today went through a storming phase in their infancy. I have seen newspaper clips from the 1800s railing against electricity and cars. Today we can’t imagine our lives without them. I expect the US will eventually strike the right balance with crypto regulations. PS - But wait, there’s moreThere’s more to the Celsius story. For instance, I didn’t get into the alleged token manipulation and potential insider trading.PSS - Former Coinbase PM arrested for insider tradingSpeaking of insider trading, this week, a former Coinbase product manager was arrested along with his brother and a friend for insider trading. Background There are about 2,000 crypto tokens. Binance lists over 300 of them on their exchange. Coinbase has been intentionally listing more tokens to close the gap and give their customers more choice. Coinbase currently lists about 200 tokens. It’s been observed that new tokens experience a significant price jump once they are listed on Coinbase. It could be due to millions of users suddenly gaining access and increasing demand. The Coinbase PM obtained intelligence on which tokens would be listed then relayed it to his accomplices. The trio then got wallets controlled by other people to opportunistically buy and sell these tokens. They earned at least $1.5M through this insider trading scheme. Blockchain to the rescuePublic blockchains permit anyone to view transactions. The challenge is that it’s not always obvious to the observer who owns the wallets but that’s why blockchain analytics firms like Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic specalize in. An avid observer noticed this pattern of sales from a wallet. He shared his observations on Twitter. Soon financial regulators were hot on the chase and identified the trio and notified Coinbase. The Coinbase PM was invited to a meeting where at Coinbase where he was presumably fired. Regulators sent him a letter. He bought a ticket to fly home to India on the same day. The suspect was apprehended before he could flee the country. Contrary to some widely held beliefs, blockchain technology is not just a haven for would-be-criminals, rather, it can be a valuable tool for law enforcement to catch criminals. It’s been long rumoured that there is significant insider trading at some crypto tokens. Perhaps this case is the first of many to come. The industry needs to police itself and partner with law enforcement. This is a public episode. Today we remember the man who helped to establish the Natural History Museum in Vienna. We'll also learn about the Swedish botanist who specialized in mycology. We salute the American botanist who wrote the Calendarian - a marvelous phenological record. We also recognize a fanciful botanical illustrator who anthropomorphized flowers in his book. We honor a husband and wife team who created a magnificent arboretum in the middle of the country. We'll celebrate National Relaxation Day with a poem a feature most gardeners enjoy - a little running brook. We Grow That Garden Library™ with a book It's the Little Things by Susanna Salk. And then we'll wrap things up with the story of a man who created the term ecosystem, and his words still challenge us to see our gardens through a much bigger lens. But first, let's catch up on some Greetings from Gardeners around the world and today's curated news. Subscribe Apple | Google | Spotify | Stitcher | iHeart Gardener Greetings To participate in the Gardener Greetings segment, send your garden pics, stories, birthday wishes and so forth to Jennifer@theDailyGardener.org And, to listen to the show while you're at home, just ask Alexa or Google to play The Daily Gardener Podcast. It's that easy. Curated News Connecticut Garden Journal: Ground Cherries | Connecticut Public Radio Here's an excerpt: “Some vegetables are just fun. We've been growing ground cherries for years. This tomato-family vegetable looks like a mini version of a tomatillo. It's a sprawling 2-foot tall plant that produces an abundance of green turning to brown papery husks. Inside the husk is the fun part. Small, cherry-sized fruits mature from green to golden. Unwrap the husk, harvest, and snack on the fruits. They taste like a cross between a tomato and pineapple. They are sweet and delicious and something kids really love." Last week was one of Turmoil in my Garden. We decided to put new windows and siding on the house. Then we decided to enjoy the ravages of a hail storm which dumped ping pong ball sized hail on the garden for about five minutes - the entire storm lasted 30 minutes. I always remind new gardeners that we never garden alone. We garden in partnership with Mother Nature, and in this partnership, Mother Nature still has her way. Sometimes we may feel like we win, but I kind of think it's like the first time you play Go Fish or some other game with your child, they just THINK they won. In any case, I am using this as an opportunity to address some crowding in my garden beds. In some places, everything is just gone, and I suppose I could see it as an early start on fall cleanup. The one thing I'm grateful for is the replacement of this large 14 x 20 'Arbor on the side of our house. I had started growing several rows of it over the years and then settled on golden hops when I was going through my hops phase. Over the past few years, I've decided I'm not a fan of hops. The vines are aggressive and sticky, and the sap can be irritating to the skin. And I wasn't a massive fan of the color. My student gardeners will help me cover the area with some landscape fabric to make sure it does not come back, and then I think climbing hydrangea would be lovely. Alright, that's it for today's gardening news. Now, if you'd like to check out my curated news articles and blog posts for yourself, you're in luck, because I share all of it with the Listener Community in the Free Facebook Group - The Daily Gardener Community. There's no need to take notes or search for links - the next time you're on Facebook, search for Daily Gardener Community and request to join. I'd love to meet you in the group. Important Events 1775 Today is the birthday of the Austrian naturalist and botanist Karl Franz Anton Ritter von Schreibers. Now, the Austrian Empire had a special affinity for plants and horticulture. And, they funded expeditions regularly to collect new materials for the Natural History Museum. Many famous botanists were involved with these expeditions, including Carl Phillip Von Martinus. In 1806, Karl von Schreiber became the director of the Vienna Natural History Museum. And although he was an excellent botanist and ecologist, his heart belonged to minerals and meteorites. One of Karl's smartest moves was to make Leopold Trattinick the curator of the Museum's herbarium, which was founded in 1807. For over forty years, Karl grew the Museum, but then things took a bad turn. In 1848, during the revolution in Vienna, the Natural History Museum caught on fire. Protesters not only destroyed the library Karl had carefully built up, but they also destroyed Karl's home since his living quarters were right inside the Museum. The destruction of the Museum was too much for Karl - it broke his heart. Karl immediately retired, and he died four years later. 1794 Today is the birthday of the botanist Elias Magnus Friesz, who is born on this day in Sweden. Now, the area where Elias grew up in Sweden was rich in fungi, and as luck would have it, his father was a self-taught botanist. Put those two things together, and it's no wonder Elias developed a lifelong interest in mycology. In fact, Elias developed the first system that was used to classify fungi, so we remember him for that. If you Google Elias Friesz, you'll see there's a wonderful picture of him as an octogenarian. If you're a Harry Potter fan, Elias looks like he could've been Dumbledore's best friend. Elias was a happy botanist, and he worked tirelessly until the day he died in February 1878. 1796 Today is the birthday of the American botanist John Torrey. John was the first American botanist to study the flora of New York State. And, the area John botanized included what is now Greenwich Village, the area of the Elgin Botanic Garden ("el-GG-IN"), which is now Rockefeller Center, and Bloomingdale, which is now the upper side west side of Manhattan - as well as Hoboken New Jersey. One of the things we remember most about John is his Calendarian, which was a phenological record where he documented his plants; he recorded the species, location, and date of first bloom. It was kind of like a baby book for his plants. Historically speaking, farmers often kept similar records to track planting seasons and growing cycles. And Thomas Jefferson did the same thing as John in a book he called The Calendar. The New York botanic garden has digitized this manuscript so you can check it out when you get a chance. And, here's some fun John Torrey trivia: The mountain known as Torrey's Peak in Colorado is named for John Torrey. 1845 Today is the birthday of the illustrator Walter Crane, who was born in Liverpool. Today, gardeners fondly recall Walter thanks to one of his most stunning works - a book called "A Floral Fantasy in an Old English Garden," which was published in 1899. Walter's book was intended to be a children's book, but as I like to say, it became a beloved book by children of all ages. For gardeners, it is really something of a graphic novel telling the story of the secret life and society of flowers. In Walter's world, the flowers are personified. For example, the Dandelion is portrayed as a bold knight - his shield is made of a large dandelion blossom. And, the Foxgloves are a lively group - comprised of cousins and brothers and sisters. The book continues to appeal thanks to Walter's beautiful artwork and the allure of the enchanted realm he created, complete with Fairies, the Four Seasons, Old Man Time, knights, and other creatures. There are 46 illustrations in this little book. Original copies of this rare book sell for over $1,000. Robert and his wife Frances created the Arboretum around their family home in Clinton, Iowa. During the 1960s and 1970s, Robert and Frances watched as Dutch Elm disease claimed the beautiful Elm-lined streets in Clinton. In response, Robert and Frances began planting a diverse range of trees on their property - which was 10 acres. Now, Robert and Frances were exceptionally disciplined when it came to planting trees - they grouped all the trees by species. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum has a lovely collection of trees, including ash, beech, birch, crabapple, elm, hickory, honeylocust, linden, magnolia, and oak. They also have a gorgeous conifer collection, which is regarded as the crown jewel of the Arboretum, and it features many rare and dwarf conifers. In total, the BickelhauptArboretum boasts over 2,000 different species of plants. And just this week, the Bickelhaupt Arboretum is writing a new chapter - they are cleaning up the damage from the derecho ("duh-RAY-cho"), the widespread and severe windstorm that blew through the midwest earlier this week (August 10, 2020). As a result of the derecho, the Arboretum lost 28 trees, and many more were damaged in the hurricane-force winds. Now the first course of action is clean up, and then they will take down trees that need to be addressed immediately because they have been so compromised. If you happen to go to the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, there is a poignant sculpture of Robert and Frances near the entrance. They are standing side by side as Frances places one foot on a shovel she is holding. Unearthed Words Today is National Relaxation Day, so take a deep breath and imagine the movement of the water as you listen to the words today's poem. I come from haunts of coot and hern, I make a sudden sally And sparkle out among the fern, To bicker down a valley. By thirty hills I hurry down, Or slip between the ridges, By twenty thorpes, a little town, And half a hundred bridges. Till last by Philip's farm, I flow To join the brimming river, For men may come, and men may go, But I go on forever. I chatter over stony ways, In little sharps and trebles, I bubble into eddying bays, I babble on the pebbles. With many a curve my banks I fret By many a field and fallow, And many a fairy foreland set With willow-weed and mallow. I chatter, chatter, as I flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever. I wind about, and in and out, With here a blossom sailing, And here and there a lusty trout, And here and there a grayling, And here and there a foamy flake Upon me, as I travel With many a silvery water-break Above the golden gravel, And draw them all along, and flow To join the brimming river For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever. I steal by lawns and grassy plots, I slide by hazel covers; I move the sweet forget-me-nots That grow for happy lovers. I slip, I slide, I gloom, I glance, Among my skimming swallows; I make the netted sunbeam dance Against my sandy shallows. I murmur under moon and stars In brambly wildernesses; I linger by my shingly bars; I loiter round my cresses; And out again I curve and flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever. — Alfred Lord Tennyson, British poet, The Brook Grow That Garden Library It's the Little Things by Susanna Salk This book came out in 2016, and the subtitle is Creating Big Moments in Your Home Through The Stylish Small Stuff. Arthur's father had a close friend and fellow teacher who was a botanist, and it was this individual who inspired Arthur to pursue botany. From a legacy standpoint, Tansley is remembered for creating the botany publication New Phytologist Which was named after an 1842 publication called The Phytologist. With his journal, Tansley wanted British botanists to be able to communicate and discuss their teaching and research. It's thanks to Arthur Tansley that we embrace the concept of an ecosystem - he introduced us to the term in 1935. Tansley defined an ecosystem as, "A community of organisms that interact with each other and with their environments by competing and collaborating over the available resources in order to thrive. In doing so, they co-evolve and jointly adapt to external influences." Listen to this Tansley quote and see if it doesn't challenge you to think about your plants, your garden, and your world more broadly. “The whole method of science… is to isolate systems for the purpose of study… whether it be a solar system, a planet, a climatic region, a plant or animal community, an individual organism, an organic molecule, or an atom… Actually, the systems we isolate mentally are not only included as parts of larger ones, but they also overlap, interlock, and interact with one another. Isolation is artificial.” So when we ask ourselves, what is wrong with this leaf? Or, with this flower? Or, shrub or tree, etc. We should also be thinking more broadly. What is wrong with this garden? With this land? Today, the New Phytologist gives the Tansley Medal to early career researchers working in the field of plant sciences. The award is intended to increase visibility for exciting work in all areas of plant sciences.

George Inness painted this scene of a train chugging through a bucolic landscape for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad to commemorate the opening of their big, new train roundhouse in Scranton PA. This hub would allow them to expand service from the Great Lakes to Hoboken NJ, right across the Hudson River from New York City. We'll find out how George fell in love with painting and how his wife's wisdom prevailed against his artistic pride! By the way, the Hoboken terminus played a role in another episode, Blue Morning by George Bellows. Last week was one of turmoil in my garden. We decided to put new windows and siding on the house. Then we decided to enjoy the ravages of a hail storm which dumped ping pong ball sized hail on the garden for about five minutes - the entire storm lasted 30 minutes. I always remind new gardeners that we never garden alone. We’re always gardening and partnership with Mother Nature and in this partnership, Mother Nature always has her way. Sometimes we may feel like we win, but I kind of think it’s like the first time you play Go Fish or some other game with your child, they just THINK they won. In any case, I am using this as an opportunity to address some crowding in my garden beds. In some places everything is just gone and I suppose I could see it as an early start on fall cleanup. The one thing I’m grateful for is the replacement of this large 14 x 20‘ Arbor on the side of our house. I had started growing a number of lines on it over the years and then settled on golden hops when I was going through my hops phase. Over the past few years I’ve decided I’m not a fan of hops. The vines are aggressive and sticky and the sap can be irritating to the skin. And I wasn’t a huge fan of the color. My student gardeners will help me cover the area with some landscape fabric to make sure it does not come back and then I’m thinking climbing hydrangea would be lovely. Brevities #OTD Today is the birthday of Karl Franz Anton Ritter von Schreibers. Schreibers was an Austrian naturalist and a botanist. In 1806, Schreibers became the director of the Vienna Natural History Museum. He was a good botanist and ecologist, but his heart belong to minerals and meteorites. Schreibers made Leopold Trattinick curator of the museum herbarium which was founded in 1807. The Austrian Empire had a thing for plants and horticulture. So expeditions were sent to collect new materials including minerals for the museum. Many famous botanists were involved with these expeditions including Carl Phillip Von Martinus. In 1848, during the revolution, the museum caught on fire. The protesters not only destroyed the library Schreibers had carefully built up, they destroyed Schreibers home - his living quarters or right inside the museum. It broke Schreibers heart. He retired and died four years later. #OTD Happy birthday to Elias Magnus Friesz who is born on this day in 1794 in Sweden. The area where Friesz grew up, was rich in fungi and his father was a self-taught botanist. Put the two together, and it’s no wonder Friesz developed a lifelong interest in mycology. In fact, Friesz developed the first system that was used to classify fungi; so we remember him for that. There’s a wonderful picture of Elias as an octogenarian. He looks like he could’ve been Dumbledore’s best friend. He was a happy botanist and he worked tirelessly until the day he died in February 1878. #OTD Happy birthday to John Torrey who is born on this day in 1796. Torreywas the first American botanist to study the flora of New York State. The area Torrey botanized included what is now Greenwich Village, the area of the Elgin botanic garden which is now Rockefeller Center, and Bloomingdale which is now the upper side west side of Manhattan, as well as Hoboken New Jersey. Torrey's Calendarian was a phenological record where he documented the plants he observed - recording the species, location, and date of first bloom. Farmers often kept similar records to track planting seasons and growing cycles. Thomas Jefferson did the same thing in a book he called The Calendar. The New York botanic garden has digitized this manuscript so you can check it out when you get a chance. And, if you live in Colorado, it might interest you to know that Torrey's peak in Colorado is named for John Torrey. #OTD It's the birthday of the illustrator Walter Crane, born in Liverpool #OnThisDay in 1845. Gardeners appreciate Crane thanks to one of his most stunning works - a book called "A Floral Fantasy in an Old English Garden" which was published in 1899. Crane's book was intended to be a children's book - but for gardeners it is really something of a graphic novel telling the storyof the hidden life and society of flowers. The flowers are personified. For example, the Dandelion is portrayed as a bold knight - his shield is made of a large dandelion blossom. And, the Foxgloves are a happy group; comprised of cousins and brothers and sisters. The book continues to appeal thanks to Crane's beautiful artwork and the allure of the enchanted realm he created; complete with Fairies, the Four Seasons, Old Man Time, knights, and other creatures. There are 46 illustrations in this little book. Original copies of this rare book sell for over $1,000. You can view the entire book for FREE using this link in today's show notes. #OTD Today, we remember Geoff Hamilton who was born on this day in 1936. Hamilton was a presenter of the BBC’s Gardener's Worldin the 1980s and 1990s he was also a gardener himself. Hamilton had a twin brother and as a young kid he became interested in horticulture by working in his family’s garden. One of his first jobs was helping out at a local nursery down the road from his house. He became the editor forPractical Gardening Magazineand then he moved into television. He was the longest serving presenter on a Gardener's World. In his Wikipedia entry, it says that many in the garden world were puzzled by the fact that Hamilton never received any recognition from the Royal Horticultural Society for his work. Hamilton‘s personal garden at Barnsdale consists of 38 themed gardens over 8 acres and it remains open to the public. It is run by his son who also gardens and is a writer. Unearthed Words As I listened from a beach-chair in the shade To all the noises that my garden made, It seemed to me only proper that words Should be withheld from vegetables and birds. A robin with no Christian name ran through The Robin-Anthem which was all it knew, And rustling flowers for some third party waited To say which pairs, if any, should get mated. Not one of them was capable of lying, There was not one which knew that it was dying Or could have with a rhythm or a rhyme Assumed responsibility for time. Let them leave language to their lonely betters Who count some days and long for certain letters; We, too, make noises when we laugh or weep: Words are for those with promises to keep. by W.H. Auden - Their Lonely Betters Today's book recommendation: The Gardens of Emily Dickinson by Judith Farr Farr's book helps us understand the poets relationship with specific flowers. It also helps us understand some of the floral symbolism that Dickinson uses in her poems which Dickinson herself called "Blossoms of the Brain". Without this information, they can be difficult to understand. Gardening was a huge part of Dickinson‘s life. Jasmine was on her list of favorite flowers. It was third, next to dearest Daphne, and except for wildflowers, which Dickinson considered dearest of all. Today's Garden Chore Plant Pickerel Weed. If you have a pond, or need a water plant for a trough or such on your property, consider planting Pickerel Weed. The foliage looks great and it blossoms for six months depending on where you live. In winter, it dies back completely. Think of Pickerel Weed like a mint; if you don’t want it to spread, grow it in containers and place the pots at the water’s edge. Pickerelweed is a hit with butterflies and other pollinators because of it lovely purple blossom. It grows well in Zones 3-10. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart Today is the day that the botanist Sylvia Edlund was born in Pittsburgh. She earned a PhD in botany from the University of Chicago Edlund was sickly as a child. She was often confined to her bed. She said that she took up botany because she thought she shouldn’t study study anything she’d have to chase She worked for the United Nations assembling an inventory of plants and animals in the far north. She worked for the geological survey of Canada for 20 years but was forced to retire in 1994 after an inflamed appendix went undiagnosed and ended up affecting her short term memory. Edlund died in British Columbia in 2014 at the age of 69. Her colleague, Fenja Brodo, wrote a tribute to her in The Ottawa Citizenthat was especially touching. She wrote, "It was not easy for her being the lone botanist, and a female at that, working in a predominantly male environment. Sylvia met the challenge and became an internationally recognized leader in plant distribution patterns in the Arctic. She showed that ground ice melt was the water source for the unexpectedly lush green valleys in parts of the High Arctic and demonstrated how climate, substrate, and geomorphic processes influence what can grow where. Sylvia was always an artist, with pen, paints and fabrics. She wrote and illustrated (water colours) a booklet on Common Arctic Wildflowers of the Northwest Territories for schoolchildren of the north. Each Christmas, she made another set of delightful felt animal ornaments, which she presented to friends. (For two years, her creations adorned the tree at the Canadian Museum of Nature.)" Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
