Paul Puey, the Co-Founder and CEO of Edge, formally known as AirBitz, hopes to decentralize financial services, connecting the consumer directly to their cryptocurrency. Paul grew up in the Bay Area where he was often reminded of the increasing importance of tech. He shared that he always had some interest in computer science, creating his first database in the seventh grade while working on real estate mailout campaigns. He would later attend University of California, Berkeley, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science. There he developed a game and found a great passion for 3D graphics, which led to six years at NVIDIA as a software engineer. He eventually came down to San Diego with little to no connections and found himself working at a local climbing gym, MesaRim, where he helped build out their programs. He didn’t think he’d find himself back in the tech space, but a single line on a financial blog brought his attention to Bitcoin. It was from there he “went down the rabbithole,” doing extensive research about the future of cryptocurrency. That led him to work with William Swanson, Scott Morgan, Daven Catillo, and Tim Horton to found AirBitz, a crypto wallet that allowed users to hold their own funds and transact without a third party. With time, the team realized that users wanted to treat their currency like an asset. So, they transitioned to a mobile-exchange wallet and rebranded it as Edge. The startup quickly advanced from a bitcoin wallet in 2014 to a security solution and multi-currency wallet in late 2017. Despite launching both Airbitz and Edge during “down” cycles of Bitcoin (which happen every three to four years), the team has still been able to increase its user base and grow the company. Using exchange volume as its primary metric, Edge has grown steady from 2018 to 2020, with an especially impressive growth rate in the first month of 2021. Paul was one of the frontrunners of Bitcoin, known as an ‘OG’ in the community. He brought this knowledge not only to his company, but also to San Diego, hosting Bitcoin meetups since AirBitz was first founded. I recently saw the Netflix documentary Banking on Bitcoin. It is filled with interviews from experts and people involved in the Bitcoin beginnings and growth. It also discusses its future and technology. This blog/podcast is about Bitcoin – the video can be found at: https://youtu.be/2RFPxTuBFTM What is Bitcoin Bitcoin is a digital currency with no banks needed to conduct transactions. It can be used across borders with minimum cost and offers a deregulated currently. It was designed as open-source software in 2009 by an individual or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto, whose identity is a mystery and subject of much speculation. The cost of a bitcoin has exploded in 2017. On January 1, 2017, the price of one bitcoin was $998. Currently, September 10, 2017, the price of bitcoin has more than doubled to slightly more than $4,334. On December 7, 2017, it's at just under $17,000. What makes Bitcoins unique, versus other currencies, is that there is no financial system, like the U.S. Federal Reserve, managing their existence and value. Bitcoins are managed by a bunch of users who track them via blockchain technology. It is the fact that no central bank controls Bitcoin production that makes them a unique currency. How to Purchase Bitcoins To buy Bitcoins you need to set up an account through a mobile app or online. Coinbase is one of the most popular digital wallets used to purchase bitcoins. As with almost any of these wallets, customers must sign up for a free account online or through a mobile app. Coinbase accepts Mastercard, Visa and a linked bank account. It´s simple to buy and sell. On the main screen, Coinbase displays the current value of the digital currency in U.S. dollars. When making a withdrawal from a Coinbase account, account holders can choose to have the funds go to either a linked bank or PayPal account. As I discovered from trying, the fees are significant. To purchase using a credit or debit card, 4% is charged. 1.5% is charged for purchases and disbursements using a linked US bank account. GDAX is an alternative that is owned by Coinbase with much lower fees of 0.25% and even lower depending on volume. GDAX is only available online, there is no mobile app yet, and it is a little more complicated than Coinbase although the trading platform also has more information. KuCoin is a Chinese based exchange that allows the purchase of hundreds of cryptocurrencies. As with any on-line account, security is vitally important. Bitcoin Depot, in conjunction with the bitcoin wallet Airbitz, allows users to buy bitcoins with cash at dozens of special ATM locations spread across six states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Texas. After setting up an account, all customers need to do is deposit cash in the ATM and scan a QR code with a special scanner attached to the ATM and, within minutes, the purchased bitcoins will be available in the Airbitz account. The most convenient way to gain exposure to bitcoins is through the Bitcoin Investment Trust (NASDAQOTH:GBTC). This fund was created so that buying bitcoins could be as easy as buying any stock or ETF share. All people have to do is buy shares through their regular broker using the ticker symbol. Each share represents about one-tenth of a bitcoin. This convenience comes at a steep cost – a share costs about twice as much as the underlying Bitcoin. Where to Use Bitcoin I have not seen Bitcoins being broadly accepted for purchases, however there is movement in that direction. Shiftpayments.com offers a Bitcoin debit card connecting Coinbase to be able to spend online and offline at what they claim to be over 38 million merchants. I see Bitcoin having three primary functions: • a portfolio diversifier, much like holding foreign currency• a way to transfer funds inexpensively overseas• a quick way to get out of ones currency (like in Venezuela and N Korea) Bitcoin Risks

We also discuss the run-up in crypto prices and how that is related to all the new interest and money flooding into the space. Paul Puey and Airbitz Solution I recently met Paul Puey at the Anarchapulco conference in Acapulco, Mexico and I left quite impressed with how Paul communicates the value of Airbitz and how they were founded on both security and customer service. This was one of my favorite episodes and is packed with value stemming from Paul’s experience in software engineering and small business. He saw Bitcoin as a solution for the cash-based industries like food/service but quickly found that there was an ease-of-use aspect in cryptocurrency wallets. Security Thanks to Wikileaks, we’ve recently learned about the CIA’s “Vault7” suite of apps that is designed to hack nearly anything with a microphone and camera. It seems that nothing is safe. We discuss how severe and dangerous the revelation actually is and how Airbitz is trying to protect your digital money and information. After attending countless town hall meetings, Chris decided to take matters into his own hands and build an Uber competitor which was decentralized and much more difficult to shut down and regulate. He felt that he had much more control when building rather than when begging the government to hear his side of the story. Crowdfunding and the Digital Token Sale In order to build their app and continue development, Arcade City needs funding. Rather than going the standard route of Angel investment or VC funding, Chris decided to issue a digital token (similar to Bitcoin) instead of selling shares of the company. These tokens have various uses and we are seeing these “ICOs” (initial coin offerings) starting to be used more frequently (Ethereum, Augur, Airbitz, etc). The ability to create a scarce, digital asset to manage and sell directly to the people who will fund your business is a great tool for digital entrepreneurs and their startups. Unfortunately, I expect the heavy hand of the SEC to come down on these ICO’s in short order. So that’s it! As many expected, blockchains are being used in so many different areas of life, even after only 8 years in existence.
