One of the most curious and complicated characters on the great American musical landscape is Thomas A. Dorsey.A deeply religious man, Dorsey often is called “the father of gospel music,” because he inspired a movement that popularized bluesy gospel songs in churches across America starting in the mid-20th century. Some 3,000 songs — a third of them gospel — were written by Dorsey in his 90 years, including “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” and “Peace in the Valley.” Now, then, about those other 2,000 songs ….Recording as “Georgia Tom,” Dorsey also was instrumental in the early days of secular blues. With his partner “Tampa Red,” he helped popularize the sexy, happy hokum music of the 1920s and ‘30s with tunes like “Somebody's Been Using That Thing,” “Dead Cat on the Line.” and “The Duck — Yas, Yas, Yas.”In the Beginning….Born in the rural Georgia town of Villa Rica, Dorsey grew up in a religious family, but gained most of his musical experience playing blues piano at barrelhouses and rowdy parties in and around Atlanta, where the family moved when Thomas was eight years old. As a young man, Dorsey began attending vaudeville theater shows that featured blues musicians, with whom he informally studied. Despite being meagerly compensated for his efforts, Thomas played at rent parties, house parties and brothels.Seeking a greater challenge, in 1919 Dorsey moved to Chicago, where he discovered that his brand of playing was unfashionable compared to jazz's newer uptempo styles. Faced with more competition for jobs, Dorsey turned to composing. In 1920 he published his first piece, called "If You Don't Believe I'm Leaving, You Can Count the Days I'm Gone,” making him one of the first musicians to copyright blues music.Dorsey also copyrighted his first religious piece in 1922 (a song called “If I Don't Get There"), but he quickly found that sacred music could not financially sustain him, at least not in the Roarin' Twenties, so he continued working the dives and playing the blues.Enter Ma RaineyDorsey's big break came in 1923 when he was hired as the pianist and leader of The Wild Cats Jazz Band accompanying Ma Rainey, a charismatic and bawdy blues shouter who by then had been performing professionally for 20 years. When Rainey and The Wild Cats opened at Chicago's largest black theater, Dorsey remembered the night as "the most exciting moment in my life,” according to his biographer Michael W. Harris.Dorsey worked with Rainey and her band for two years, composing and arranging her music in the blues style as well as vaudeville and jazz to please audiences' tastes. Often at his side was a new member of the band, Hudson “Tampa Red” Whitaker, a blues guitarist who in 1928 would become Dorsey's recording partner for five years.Rainey enjoyed enormous popularity touring with her hectic schedule, singing about lost loves and hard times. She interacted with her audiences, who were often so enthralled they stood up and shouted back at her while she sang. But Dorsey increasingly had misgivings about the suggestive lyrics of the songs he and Red were writing. Finally, Thomas left the tour and tried to market his new sacred music. He printed thousands of copies of his songs to sell directly to churches and publishers, even going door to door, but he still couldn't make it work.About This SongDorsey returned to the blues in 1928, but this time in the recording studios in the persona of “Georgia Tom.” The first Paramount sessions for him and Tampa Red were the last ones for Ma Rainey. In fact, one of the last things the great blues singer ever recorded was this new Thomas Dorsey composition.Nowadays for vinyl collectors, Rainey's “Black Eye Blues” is a rare find. That's because Ma's September 1928 recording of the song wasn't released until July 1930. By then, the Great Depression was raging. Rainey had left the business (retiring to her Columbus, Ga., home). Paramount was ending too; the studio ceased operation in 1932.While audio of the record was later preserved on blues compilation albums (and now on YouTube), the song itself has had a sketchy history. Over the years, the controversial subject matter — domestic violence — has made it uncomfortable for many singers to tackle, especially when dealing with Dorsey's no-compromise lyrics: You low-down alligator, you watch and sooner or later I'm gonna catch you with your britches down! When folkie Judy Henske recorded it in 1964, for instance, her producers at Elektra changed the title to "Low Down Alligator.” Similarly, when Odetta recorded the song two years earlier, she also found the title a bit too much for early 1960s sensibilities. On the Riverside label, instead of “Black Eye Blues,” the song was listed as “Hogan's Alley,” based on Dorsey's opening line (Down in Hogan's Alley lived Miss Nancy Ann….)Hogan's AlleyWhich raises a question. Where is “Hogan's Alley,” anyway? Many cities (from Vancouver to Virginia) have one, but historian Robert Lewis Miesen writes, “Rather than being the name of a person, ‘Hogan's Alley' was a derogatory 19th century label, much as one might use ‘skid row,' ‘ghetto' or ‘hood' today.”He noted that in the same spirit back in 1895, artist Richard F. Outcault — father of the modern comic strip — placed his “Yellow Kid” character in his “Hogan's Alley” cartoons, which appeared weekly in The New York World, starring rambunctious slum kids in the streets. Our Take on the TuneMeanwhile in Floodlandia, when the whole band can't get together — like last week, when it was just Danny, Randy and Charlie — it's an opportunity to lay back and explore tunes not usually on the practice list.In Flood years, this song dates back nearly a half century, to when the fellows were first starting to fool with the hokum tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s.Here's “Black Eye Blues” from last week's gathering. Healing as a Survivor of Sexual Assault May Alirad pt 2 As an immigrant from Laos with her family, May Alirad was hoping to live the American dream… but, at age 7 she experienced her “first” sexual assault. I say “first” intentionally. Because it continued by several people, on and off, until she was 32 years of age. After 30 years of unintentionally living as a victim of multiple sexual assaults, May finally found freedom from guilt, shame, embarrassment, fear, and condemnation. This happened when she was in a prayer group and everyone was praying for her. Amen. May went to work and actively put faith in her ability to heal and help others do the same. May is now sharing this proven, life-tested, (not time tested, but LIFE-TESTED), personally verifiable approach - with you. She is the author of a great book titled, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor.” This is part two and the conclusion of a very, very important interview on a very sensitive topic - please pay attention and share this interview with those whom you believe may benefit... Let's talk about your book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor.” One of your chapters is called “Boundaries.” What kind of boundaries would have helped you in your younger years that wish you could have had in place? I know there are the “7 Steps of Grief” when we lose a loved one. Is there anything like that which victims of sexual assault go through? Why did you decide to put all of this into your book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor?” There was a story I heard you tell that, I believe will truly help someone listening to us right now. Can you share with us about “Little May?” You also have some information you share about HOW someone should respond “if and when” someone comes to them and shares they have been sexually assaulted. What to say and what “not to say” in that time and situation. Can share that with us? May, this is so interesting and I know that this book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor” is going to help a lot of women who suffer as you did. My prayer is that it will reach even more than you ever realize. Amen. How can someone obtain a copy of your book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor?” I take it is on Amazon, correct? If someone wanted to reach out to you, to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this… or possibly to sign up for your coaching session that may have experienced some of the things you have shared. How can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links for all of this in the show notes below. Folks, my prayer is you NEVER have to experience things which May Alirad did. But, the fact of the matter is, many, many, too many of you – have. But you can experience this freedom that May Alirad has. She has a calling on her life to help you “GET THERE.” Amen! This book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor” is part of that process of helping those of you that have been sexually abused.

May, it is such a blessing to have you come on the program and share your story – helping, I know, many of our listeners. First, I always start with this question. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is May Alirad?” What age were you when you immigrated to the United States? What was the first memory you have of the United States? What was your family life like when you were growing up? In your book, you share the first sexual assault happened at about the age of 7. Did you tell anyone after it happened or did you keep it to yourself? Age 7 is quite young. Did this continue through your childhood and teenage years? Looking back now, why do you think you kept it to yourself all of those years? You have a unique take when you begin to ask “Why God” let this happen to you. Can you share that with us? What was the point when you finally decided it was time to take back control of your life and what steps did you take? Let's talk about your book, “Was I Assaulted – My Guide to Healing as a Survivor.” One of your chapters is called “Boundaries.” What kind of boundaries would have helped you in your younger years that wish you could have had in place? EPISODE 110 | How to Be a Fascist People use the term "Fascist" a lot these days, but do they really know what that means? Fascism is a very specific combination of ideas and goals that occurred within very clear historical and philosophical contexts. And while not everyone you don't like is a "Fascist", there are some actual fascists out there, and they are not being all that quiet. Like what we do? The year 1985 would find the band R.E.M. in transition between college band success and the mainstream powerhouse they were to become in future years. The quartet of Michael Stipe on vocals, Mike Mills on bass and vocals, Peter Buck on guitar, and Bill Berry on percussion and backing vocals were moving towards a greater variety of instrumentation and a bit more experimentation with their third studio album, Fables of the Reconstruction. The album actually has two names, as "Fables of the Reconstruction" was the name if you held the cassette or album with one side up, and if you flipped it over the name appeared as "Reconstruction of the Fables." The suggestion of the name "Reconstruction" came from Michael Stipes' father who was a carpenter. It is also a loaded term in the American South from which the Athens, Georgia band hails — “Reconstruction” is the period of time immediately following the American Civil War when the South was being brought back into the Union. The songs on the album have a darker sound than earlier works, and the lyrics draw from Southern Gothic works. This was the first album recorded outside the U.S., as the band traveled to London to work at Livingston Studios with producer Joe Boyd. While the singles from the album would not be considered hits in the United States, the album reached number 28 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and number 35 on the UK Albums Chart. It would feature two singles, “Driver 8' and“Can't Get There from Here,” which would become well known over time.Rob brings us this transitional album for today's podcastDriver 8The second single released from the album refers to the Southern Crescent train line. It ran under the Southern Railway until 1979 when Amtrak bought them out, and continues as the Amtrak Crescent today. “And the train conductor says take a break, Driver 8.”Green Grow the RushesThis deeper cut was written as a pact between Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs, relating to the poor treatment of indigenous peoples and migrant workers. “Green grow the rushes, go. The compass points the workers home.”Maps and LegendsInspired by preacher and Southern folk artist Howard Finster, this song uses the reading of a map as a metaphor for reading a person. Like the map reveals stories in little symbols on it, people are the accumulation of their experiences and stories. Can't Get There from HereThis song was the lead single from the album and peaked at number 10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart - meaning it peaked at about 110 in US popularity. It is the first R.E.M. song to have a horn section. You can sense the Soul inspiration in it. The lyrics about “Philomath” refer to an unincorporated community just outside of Athens, Georgia. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Weird Science by Oingo Boingo (from the motion picture “Weird Science”)Two geeky high school students create the perfect woman in this sci-fi comedy partly based on Frankenstein, and largely based on the 1951 comic “Made of the Future” by Al Feldstein. STAFF PICKS:Drive by The Cars Lynch brings us a version of the Cars single from the 1985 Live Aid concert. Bassist Benjamin Orr takes on the lead vocal duties for this ballad which was written by frequent front man Ric Ocasek. The studio version appeared on their 1984 album Heartbeat City, and became one of the bands biggest hits.Take On Me by a-haBruce features the first US hit by a Norwegian band. While a-ha released the song twice before without it becoming a hit, the third release with its video combining pencil sketch animation and live performance would propel it to the number 1 slot in the U.S. Its 2 1/2 octave-spanning chorus makes it one of the hardest songs to sing.Summertime Girls by Y & T Wayne's staff pick is a hair band rocker, the first and only hit by Y&T. It went to number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, but was played frequently on the television series “Baywatch.” The Band Y&T was originally known as "Yesterday & Today," and although they don't have many hits they have sold over 4 million albums worldwide, and were an inspiration for Lars Ulrich of Metallica to become a musician.Dancing in the Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger Rob closes out the staff picks with a cover originally recorded by Martha and the Vandellas in 1964 (but we all agreed that the Van Halen cover is the best there is).Jagger and Bowie's version made it to number 7 on the US chart and number 1 on the UK chart. This collaboration was their contribution to the Live Aid charity movement. This week's episode delves into Sal's lifelong passion for aviation. It humorously touches on his military days when Drill Instructors refused to call him 'Marinello,' opting for 'Private Ello' instead, to avoid the word 'Marine' in his name! Sal recounts his time with the 3d LAAM Battalion (HAWK Missiles) as well as the pivotal moment of his first flight, underscoring the seriousness of his commitment to learning. A highlight this week is the discussion of 'Get-There-itis,' a mindset that can prove fatal in aviation. He shares an anecdote about a commercial student's unexpected surrender of the controls during a critical maneuver, revealing the unpredictability of instructing. Sal also shares an introduction to flight that he did when another student surprised him! He also relays the aero training with the renowned Patty Wagstaff, which inspired this week's title. He reflects on his first CFI Checkride which resulted in an initial failure that turned into a valuable lesson in life about persistence in the face of challenges. He concludes this week with a touching story of flying with his father, which he has documented in the Air Facts Journal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqB6AVznF6s Raw recording session of our time with Sal!
Guest host Garrett Cash and Justin begin Part 4 of Elvis and Country Music journey right where they left off: Elvis' iconic 1969 sessions at Memphis producer Chips Moman's American Sound, which provide Elvis his first country hits – as the industry considered them – in a decade. They then trace Elvis' path from Las Vegas, where he brings together the finest country-rock band ever assembled in the TCB Band, back to Nashville where he not only embraces the “Countrypolitan” evolution of the Nashville sound, but pays homage to the genre's diverse pop, blues, and folk roots with his only concept album, an artistic triumph which fully showcased how Elvis viewed the history of country music, with its many lineages all under one banner: “Elvis Country.” Our hosts also take sidebars to reflect on women's rising voices in country music during this period, the development of a movement within Nashville that came to be dubbed “outlaw country,” and songwriters such as Mac Davis, Dallas Frazier, Lee Hazlewood, and Dennis Linde, whose “Burning Love” once again drives home the failings, inherent flaws and revealing biases in the way we discuss genre using the music industry's classifications; a “rock” hit from a “country” writer, originally recorded by “soul” singer Arthur Alexander. Finally, we arrive in Hawaii, where – as Jimmie Rodgers once reminded us – everybody does “it.” What is “it,” exactly? Sure seems like country music, since “Aloha from Hawaii” is jam-packed with it! And what to make of Elvis' interpretation of country writer Mickey Newbury's “An American Trilogy?” All that and more – next week's episode (we promise it'll be shorter!) will take us from Elvis' 1973 Stax Sessions all the way to the morning of August 16, 1977. Join us for Part 1 of our new Series, "An Ever Evolving Life" with Queenie Luv. In this series, Queenie host heart felt conversations surrounding the ever evolving experiences with life and the lessons that we are taught, the challenges that we overcome, the trials that we face and the blessings that comes out of it all. Queenie believes that we are not WHERE WE START...we are on a journey to GET THERE...a life course to our destiny. In this episode Queenie shares what it was like growing up in the last 80's during the crack epidemic and attending a middle school as a troubled youth. Queenie sits down with her mentor and P.E. Coach, Eric Tucker to discuss what it was like for him teaching during that time, as a black man and talented young educator at Spring Lake Junior High school, which sometimes felt like an inner city school. Coach Tucker was part of a 'TRIO' of educators who mentored Queenie and kept her on the right path, although she was oftentimes creating her own way.....Still Coach Tucker and two other educators never gave up on pouring into her and making sure that they too gave back to so many others. A little more about coach Tucker: After leaving Spring Lake Junior High School, Coach Tucker went on to touch the lives of so many students and teachers alike. Coach became a living legend at Fayetteville State University in the 90's. Coach Eric Tucker led Fayetteville State women's basketball from 1992-93 until 2008-09. The Broncos went on to three CIAA Championship appearances and five NCAA post-season berths. Within that time, FSU won (over) 300 games, a 2001 CIAA Championship, and five Southern Division titles. Coach Tucker earned two CIAA Coach of the Year honors in '93 and '94 and the conference named him the 2001 Tournament's “Most Outstanding Coach”. In Tucker's 17 seasons, FSU had a total of 19 All-CIAA student-athletes, 10 All-Tournament honorees, nine All-Rookie Team members, a Rookie of the Year, and a CIAA Tournament MVP. COACH TUCKER IS LEGENDARY! To learn more about the Premium Sea Moss Gel mentioned in the podcast please check out www.premiumseamossgel.com
