Funkwhale Podcasters MeetingEliot Berriot has posted the minutes for the first meeting and I was lucky enough to have been able to attend for most of it! It didnt last all that long since everybody was pressed for time. BUt here is the gist of it. We've got 3 podcasters in the publishing testing pool and 4 people in the listeners testing pool. Jonas Smedegaard has been part of the central team that maintains the Debian operating system for many years. Debian is a very important part of the open source ecosystem with a core team of about a thousand, with tens of thousands of contributors. Many other projects benefit from the work done by the Debian community. In this conversation, we discuss open source in general and a lot about Debian and where it fits into the landscape. In a recent coaching call, a client shared a significant challenge - how to grow a team from 200 to possibly 700 this calendar year - without having the proverbial “wheels come off.” We talked about the importance of front line supervisors who take care of the teams at “the tip of the spear.” The topic of accountability came up. Recall from our Academy Leadership Excellence Courses that 83% of organizations have accountability issues. Kelly and Robby Riggs concur in Counter Mentor Leadership. They describe accountability struggles as a twofold problem: The BOSS doesn’t know how to create a culture of accountability; then there is an issue, the BOSS doesn’t truly address the issue. The Riggs’ visualize a useful construct, the Freedom Box. Imagine a rectangular box with four primary boundaries: • Company values and/or guiding principles. • Expectations. • Level of Authority. • Performance standards and metrics. Our values, expectations and performance standards can be expressed within our Personal Leadership Philosophy. Our level of authority provides delegation and coaching guidance. Putting this all together, the Freedom Box creates an agreed-upon area of autonomy. Just what we need for a rapidly growing organization, rather than having the wheels fall off. Leaders create accountability.

Proprietary de facto standards of the dominant companies have lead to the emergence of virtual “information silos” that can barely communicate with one another. Social networks are an important benchmark for this trend. They are an important tool for private, commercial and political use. Technological sovereignty can be decisive for political struggles, regardless of whether we talk about elections or revolutions. Sovereignty means owning your data – and your hardware. Whereas Diaspora is an example for independent social networking, the FreedomBox project is one of the most innovative and promising tools for self-empowerment and decentralization. Katharina Nocun’s talk will present an overview of the impact of social networks and the driving economic forces of this market. The status quo of the Diaspora network and the Federation as the most prominent representative of free and open source non-commercial decentralized alternatives will be analyzed.
