I'm skeptical of any claim of a “formula” regarding personal evolution. And you'll notice I say “a formula” and not “the formula.” But many things can be boiled down to some core ingredients. The difference in my opinion is this formula is less like a cooking recipe you just easily mix and bake and is more like an intense formulaic math equation you must diligently work out. I feel Steven Kotler does a masterful job of deducing peak performance down into its essence and from it you can see where you need to give focus and attention and work. In this episode, Dr. Dave Rabin sits down with Jamie Wheal, bestselling author of Stealing Fire, and celebrated author of Recapture the Rapture, to explore the evolving role of psychedelics in society, from their historical significance in the 1960s counterculture to their emerging therapeutic applications today. They deep dive into consciousness, psychedelics, the concept of ‘rapture', the neuroscience of courage, and insights from Eric Kandel on how evolutionary learning mechanisms shape all decision-making. Examining the contrast between ancient plant medicine traditions and modern high-potency psychedelics, they highlight the challenges of integration, the risks of dependency, and the importance of preparation and support in therapeutic settings. They also address the commodification of psychedelics, the necessity of a sacramental approach, and the deeper spiritual and communal significance of these substances. Ultimately, they emphasize self-discovery, the acceptance of uncertainty, and the requirement for unity and responsible engagement with psychedelics to foster healing and collective transformation. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we look back on a fascinating deep dive with renowned author and peak performance expert Steven Kotler. The conversation centers around Kotler's book, "The Art of Impossible," which explores the intricate relationship between motivation, neurobiology, and the pursuit of extraordinary achievements. This episode will break down the key insights to help you harness your potential and achieve remarkable results. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Understanding Intrinsic Motivation Steven Kotler begins by unpacking the concept of intrinsic motivation, which he identifies as a crucial driver for human performance. He highlights five key elements: Curiosity, Passion, Purpose, Autonomy, and Mastery. These components not only fuel our desire to excel but also enhance our focus and engagement in activities. Kotler emphasizes that these intrinsic motivators are hardwired into our biology, suggesting that when we align our actions with these motivators, we can achieve remarkable results with less effort. Kotler illustrates this point by referencing the neurochemicals involved in passion and love, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine. He recalls the intense focus and attention one experiences when falling in love, noting that this heightened state of awareness comes effortlessly. This natural inclination towards passion and engagement, he argues, is a testament to our biological design, which favors extraordinary achievements. The Consequences of Not Going Big A striking assertion made by Kotler is that not striving for greatness can have detrimental effects on our well-being. He argues that human beings are inherently wired for extraordinary accomplishments, and failing to pursue big goals can lead to negative outcomes. This perspective challenges conventional views on motivation and success, suggesting that complacency can be harmful. Kotler points out that many of the issues plaguing modern society, such as depression and anxiety, can be linked to a lack of meaningful work and engagement. He identifies eight major causes of depression, two of which—genetics and severe trauma—are often highlighted. However, he emphasizes that these factors account for less than half of the equation. The remaining causes are rooted in our biology and motivation, particularly the absence of work that aligns with our values, passions, and the opportunity for mastery. The Importance of Meaningful Work One of the most significant insights from Kotler's discussion is the idea that meaningful work is essential for mental health and fulfillment. He explains that when individuals engage in work that lacks curiosity, passion, or autonomy, they are more likely to experience feelings of emptiness and depression. This lack of alignment with intrinsic motivators can lead to a sense of stagnation and dissatisfaction. Kotler argues that the modern workforce often overlooks the importance of these intrinsic motivators, leading to widespread disengagement. He stresses that when people are not allowed to pursue their passions or develop their skills, they miss out on the flow state—a mental state of complete immersion and focus that is crucial for peak performance. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
This episode offers an exploration of the life, works, and esoteric system of Franz Bardon (1909-1958), a Czech occultist who significantly influenced 20th-century Western esotericism. Bardon's seminal trilogy—"Initiation Into Hermetics" (1956), "The Practice of Magical Evocation" (1956), and "The Key to the True Quabbalah" (1957)—provides a comprehensive guide to his unique approach to Hermetic magic, which emphasizes self-mastery, elemental equilibrium, and spiritual transformation. The episode analyzes Bardon's step-by-step methodology for developing the practitioner's mental, astral, and physical faculties, as well as his innovative interpretation of the Hermetic principles of correspondence and analogy. It also examines Bardon's syncretic integration of Eastern and Western spiritual practices, such as yoga, alchemy, and Kabbalah, into a universal system adaptable to various esoteric paths. Experiences that put you in a state of flow are shown to override PTSD and heartbreak. Up Next ► How to enter ‘flow state' on command Flow is an altered state of consciousness in which we feel and perform our best due to total absorption in an activity. A state of flow, which is due to a cocktail of "feel-good" chemicals in the brain, can help overcome PTSD, addiction, and heartbreak. Flow is so powerful that doctors might one day prescribe experiences like surfing or skydiving to help patients overcome trauma. -------------------------------------------------- About Steven Kotler: Steven Kotler is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Executive Director of the Flow Research Collective. Could there be more to creativity's origins than we realize? What if mythic sources and irrational realms truly underpin our most visionary breakthroughs? Perhaps divine gifts flow through mortal vessels, their full power beyond any individual's claim. Inspiration might arise synergistically between human endeavor and ineffable forces beyond our ken. To create enduring works, we may need to nurture creative soulfulness as much as technical skill. For all our modern grasp of knowledge, its deepest wells may still lie veiled in shadow, their waters a grace, not a possession.New! In today's episode I chat with one of my favourite thinkers and writers: Jamie Wheal. I got to know Jamie through our mutual interest in, well, the hot mess that our civilization seems to be going through, and I knew he'd make a great guest for Win-Win because he's one of those rare folks who can combine both intellectual rigor and a deep love for physicality and nature. So as well as discussing game theory and the meaning crisis and all that good stuff, we also get into his discoveries studying human "flow states" - he's the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, as well as the author of the bestselling books Stealing Fire and Recapture the Rapture. We will learn: The anti-aging benefits of flow states and how to get into them on demand. How forgiveness unlocks wisdom and empathy. How to use dynamic play and novel environment to speed up and enhance learning at any age. What do you believe about your brain as you age? If you're like most people, you expect that you'll get a little slower, you'll become more forgetful, and you'll have difficulty learning new things as easily... and that's if you're lucky. Because about 10% of senior adults in the US will develop dementia, while another 22% will have mild cognitive impairment. While aging does correlate with certain structural and chemical changes in the brain, we now know that many cognitive abilities can be maintained or even improved later in life. So while our medical and pharmaceutical industries continue to search for cures for cognitive decline, we can take comfort in the fact that there are interventions that can be done at any age to improve peak performance. By the end of this episode, you'll know all the latest research and insights to help you maintain and boost your cognitive abilities as you age. Our guest is Steven Kotler. He is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Executive Director of the Flow Research Collective. He is one of the world's leading experts on human performance.
