When Promises Turn to Laughter Genesis 18:1-15, 21:1-7 Stories between Genesis 2-18 Noah and the Great Flood Tower of Babel Call of Abram Sodom and Gomorrah Introduced Abram's Vision and Covenant Ishmael and Hagar Genesis 15:1-6 After these events, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great. 2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what can you give me since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 Abram continued, “Look, you have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house will be my heir.” 4 Now the word of the Lord came to him: “This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “Your offspring will be that numerous.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 17:15-16 15 God said to Abraham, “As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah will be her name. 16 I will bless her; indeed, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will produce nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” "I will bless her. I will give you a son by her... I will bless her. She will produce nations... kings of people will come from her..." Genesis 17:17 Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, give birth?” Genesis 18:1-15 1 The Lord appeared to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day. 2 He looked up, and he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, bowed to the ground, 3 and said, “My lord, if I have found favor with you, please do not go on past your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, that you may wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 I will bring a bit of bread so that you may strengthen yourselves. This is why you have passed your servant's way. Later, you can continue on.” “Yes,” they replied, “do as you have said.” 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick! Knead three measures of fine flour and make bread.” 7 Abraham ran to the herd and got a tender, choice calf. He gave it to a young man, who hurried to prepare it. 8 Then Abraham took curds and milk, as well as the calf that he had prepared, and set them before the men. He served them as they ate under the tree. 9 “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he answered. 10 The Lord said, “I will certainly come back to you in about a year's time, and your wife Sarah will have a son!” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. 12 So she laughed to herself: “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I have delight?” 13 But the Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Can I really have a baby when I'm old?' 14 Is anything impossible for the Lord? At the appointed time I will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son.” 15 Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said because she was afraid. But he replied, “No, you did laugh.” What has God promised you? Abram believed the Lord... (Genesis 17:17) Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed... (Genesis 17:17) So she laughed to herself... (Genesis 18:12) Is there something in your life when you think about it, you laugh? Not because it is funny, but the laughter is out of the deepest part of your soul and you don't know what else to do. vs. 14- "Is anything impossible for the Lord?" "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" "Is anything too wonderful for the Lord?" Genesis 21:6 Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.”

Genesis 17When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the Sovereign God. Walk before me and be blameless. 2 Then I will confirm my covenant between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.”3 Abram bowed down with his face to the ground, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer will your name be Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham because I will make you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you extremely fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you. 7 I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 I will give the whole land of Canaan—the land where you are now residing—to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God.”9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep the covenantal requirement I am imposing on you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my requirement that you and your descendants after you must keep: Every male among you must be circumcised. 11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins. This will be a reminder of the covenant between me and you. 12 Throughout your generations every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not one of your descendants. 13 They must indeed be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money. The sign of my covenant will be visible in your flesh as a permanent reminder. 14 Any uncircumcised male who has not been circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin will be cut off from his people—he has failed to carry out my requirement.”15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name. 16 I will bless her and will give you a son through her. I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations. Kings of countries will come from her!”17 Then Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground and laughed as he said to himself, “Can a son be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18 Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live before you!”19 God said, “No, Sarah your wife is going to bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm my covenant with him as a perpetual covenant for his descendants after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will indeed bless him, make him fruitful, and give him a multitude of descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes; I will make him into a great nation. 21 But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year.” 22 When he finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.23 Abraham took his son Ishmael and every male in his household (whether born in his house or bought with money) and circumcised them on that very same day, just as God had told him to do. 24 Now Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised; 25 his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised. 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on the very same day. 27 All the men of his household, whether born in his household or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
Readings for Friday, January 28, 2022 “The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you!” -- Psalm 20:1 Morning Psalm 88 1 O Lord, God of my salvation, when, at night, I cry out in your presence, 2 let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry. 3 For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. 4 I am counted among those who go down to the Pit; I am like those who have no help, 5 like those forsaken among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. 6 You have put me in the depths of the Pit, in the regions dark and deep. 7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. 8 You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a thing of horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; 9 my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call on you, O Lord ; I spread out my hands to you. 10 Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the shades rise up to praise you? 11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? 12 Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your saving help in the land of forgetfulness? 13 But I, O Lord, cry out to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. 14 O Lord, why do you cast me off? Why do you hide your face from me? 15 Wretched and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am desperate. 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your dread assaults destroy me. 17 They surround me like a flood all day long; from all sides they close in on me. 18 You have caused friend and neighbor to shun me; my companions are in darkness. Psalm 148 1 Praise the Lord ! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! 2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! 3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created. 6 He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. 7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, 8 fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! 9 Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! 10 Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! 11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! 12 Young men and women alike, old and young together! 13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. 14 He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the Lord ! Midday Genesis 17:15-27 15 God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live in your sight!” 19 God said, “No, but your wife Sarah shall bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you; I will bless him and make him fruitful and exceedingly numerous; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this season next year.” 22 And when he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. 23 Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all the slaves born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised; 27 and all the men of his house, slaves born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. Hebrews 10:11-25 11 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” 13 and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” 17 he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. John 6:1-15 6 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. Evening Psalm 6 1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger, or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror. 3 My soul also is struck with terror, while you, O Lord —how long? 4 Turn, O Lord, save my life; deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love. 5 For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who can give you praise? 6 I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. 7 My eyes waste away because of grief; they grow weak because of all my foes. 8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. 9 The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror; they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame. Psalm 20 1 The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary, and give you support from Zion. 3 May he remember all your offerings, and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices. 4 May he grant you your heart's desire, and fulfill all your plans. 5 May we shout for joy over your victory, and in the name of our God set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. 6 Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with mighty victories by his right hand. 7 Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses, but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God. 8 They will collapse and fall, but we shall rise and stand upright. 9 Give victory to the king, O Lord ; answer us when we call. (Gn.17:1,9-10,15-22; Ps.128:1-5; Mt.8:1-4) “Can Sarah give birth at ninety?” Abraham laughs to himself as he asks the question; and indeed many scoff at the idea today, or simply choose to reason the possibility away. And can a leper be made clean in an instant, just by a touch of Jesus' hand and the words “Be cured”? Is the arm of God, who created the universe, somehow shortened to such miracles? Why do we think it so? Wherefore our lack of faith? God appears to this ninety-nine-year-old man and tells him whose wife is barren, in the words of our psalm: “Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table.” And Abraham laughs. (As will Sarah, too, upon hearing such news – thus the name of their child Isaac: “he laughs”.) It's an understandable reaction. Who would not find the thought humorous? But Abraham does something more than laugh: he also “prostrates himself” before the Lord, face to the floor. How many of our modern scoffers would do such as this? It is human to question, to doubt; but it is godly to humble oneself in faith. There is a world of difference between a laugh of wonder and the scoffing of the skeptic. The latter shall remain barren, never finding the living water that would make him fertile and fruitful; the former by his fear of the Lord opens himself to His favor, to His blessing – and such life-giving breath of blessing will make him bear fruit abundantly. This humble faith is perfectly evident in the leper as well, and is indeed the catalyst of his healing. We are told the leper “came forward and did Him homage” – falling on his face like Abraham – and said to the Lord, “If you will to do so, you can cure me.” First he shows humility, he shows fear of the Lord; then he expresses his faith. Simply put, he believes in the power of God. And so he is healed. He is made whole, more whole indeed than the Pharisees and priests who stand by calculating how this can be. God does not come to the proud. He does not show Himself to the self-righteous. He cannot. They refuse Him at every turn. To the humble of heart, to the poor in spirit, the Lord is present – and His blessings they receive. And miraculous are they beyond what the eye can see. Amen. ******* O LORD, free us from all our disease by a word from your mouth, as we bow humbly before you. YHWH, by a word from your mouth the barren womb bears fruit; by a word from your mouth we are healed. Our reproach, our leprosy, is taken from those who come to you in faith, who bow before you in humility. Only in this way are we saved – only in this way are our lives of any worth. In wonder we look upon your works, O LORD, in wonder and thanksgiving. How can we not give you praise for your blessings upon us? If we fear you and the hand you stretch forth to redeem our souls, we shall indeed know your blessings upon us through all generations. Laughter you put into our mouths, dear LORD, as we look upon your hand at work. What joy you bring to the tired soul by your grace living amongst us! Though we seemed at the point of death, though disease had taken hold – you have freed us to walk with you… in all our days your will is done.
Have you ever made one too many mistakes. You know, you get to a point where you think, That's it! God must be done with me? Well, Abraham was a man of faith who made plenty of mistakes along the way. Yet God seemed to overlook, even to compensate for them. Why was that? Life Changing Moments As we travel through life we all kind of experience these moments and often they are seemingly insignificant events that in fact, turn out to change the whole course of our lives. It's amazing when you think about it! We all have a plan for our lives but there are things just around the next corner or just over the next rise that can change everything – good things and bad things, happy things and sad things. Some people think, “Well, it's all a matter of chance." Well, I don't believe in chance. I remember a brochure that changed my life. I was attending a little church – I had not long become a Christian and it was a Sunday service like every other Sunday. At the end of the service I walked to the back of the little church and I saw a brochure for a particular Bible College, Tabor College in Sydney. It wasn't a particularly attractive brochure or a well designed brochure – I picked it up and that was a defining moment – I took it home, I read about this ministry degree, I prayed and I felt this incredibly strong tug in my heart. Now in my mind I am thinking, "There's no way. You know Berni, you have been a Christian for five minutes" but in my heart I knew. So I rang them, I applied, I went to see the Principal, I felt like such a fraud. "They are never going to accept me." They did! And there I learned so much but also, by chance again, I came into contact with my predecessor in this ministry; the former CEO of Christianityworks and one thing led to another. And today I'm doing what I am doing because I picked up that little brochure at the back of the church. Now I had no idea that morning that something would happen that would change the course of my life. This week we are starting a new series on Christianityworks, it's called “Defining Moments”. It's really exciting! I want to look at this from a different perspective; from God's perspective. See when we look back on our lives most of us can pick three or four, maybe half a dozen defining moments – those little things that seemed to change the whole course of our lives. Now, sure we can see them from our natural human perspective – after all, we are people; we're human, but if we do that I think we miss the point. I want to look at some defining moments in the lives of four people in the Bible – Abraham, Joseph, David and Josiah over the next four weeks and we are starting today with Abraham. I want to see if we can discover how God reaches into our lives with miracles - great and small to define the very course of our lives because God does have a plan. Psalm 139, verse 16, says: Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book were written all the days that were formed for me when none of them as yet existed. And when we at least expect it, and even despite what you and I do or fail to do, His plan is worked out through His grace for His glory. God brings those defining moments. Let's start with Abraham - the man with whom God's engagement of His chosen people began. He was living comfortably in a place called Ur, east of Israel – of course Israel didn't exist back then. Ur was the land of the Chaldeans, later it was called Babylon – it's just south of modern day Baghdad. And he travelled with his father up to Haran and then God called him to leave his comfort and follow this really crazy, absolutely incredulous promise. Let's pick it up – if you have got a Bible, grab it; open it up at Genesis chapter 12. We are going to look at the story of Abraham – it's too much to look at it all in one programme but we are going to have a look at part of his story. Genesis chapter 12, beginning at verse 1: Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram when as the Lord had told him and Lot when with him. Abram was seventy five years old when he departed form Haran.” Seventy five years old! “He and Sarai his wife and they were childless." You see, you have to remember, in the Old Testament, blessing; God's blessing, you knew you had it when you had lots of land and lots of children. They had neither, so they didn't have God's blessing on their lives. Now the word "Abram" means "exalted father". So even his name was a joke, but still he went, off into the never never, based on what – some intangible, crazy call from God? Remember Abram had no Bible; he had no Scriptures to reveal who God was. He had no church tradition, or Jewish tradition – nothing like that. All the other nations had their gods; idols – they worshipped them, they believed all sorts of weird and wonderful things but Abram put his faith; he put his whole life and all his possessions in this God who came up with this incredulous promise. How did God say this to Abram - through an audible voice, a dream, a vision, a whisper of the Spirit in his heart? We don't know but he just heard the call and he trusted in the promises of God and off he went, into the blue yonder. Now God's plan A, remember, is to bless Abram with land and children – impossible of course! Oozes fantasy, not faith – could never happen. And then begins Abram's comedy of errors – pretty tragic actually. We don't have time to look at them all today but we are going to look at some of them. It's a journey where Abram and Sarai his wife, made plenty of mistakes along the way. Take Lot for instance, his nephew – if you look at Genesis chapter 12 again, did God tell Abram to take Lot with him? Not at all – it was Abram's idea. No doubt, this was plan B for Abram. "Well, if God doesn't come through on this promise of a son, at least I'll have a relative to be my heir" and Lot…..Lot causes him all sorts of grief. Let's have a look – Genesis chapter 13, verse 5: Now Lot who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents so that the land couldn't support both of them living together, for their possessions were so great that they could not live together. And there was strife between the herders of Abram's stock and the herders of Lot's stock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land. Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me – between your herders and my herders for we are kindred. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I'll go to the right; of you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” Lot looked about him and saw the plain of the Jordan that was well watered everywhere like this garden of the Lord; like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar - this was before the Lord had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. So Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan and Lot eastward thus he separated from Abram. Gee, plan B worked really well for Abram didn't it? Obviously God didn't know what He was promising Abram and needed a back up! And look how it turned out! Strife, separation and then Abram gave away the best half of the Promised Land. And if you read on in chapter 14, Abram risks his life and God's plan because he has to fight a battle to save Lot's life. Lot was not part of plan A and in chapter 19 of Genesis (we won't go there for now for time reasons) but he ends up sleeping with his own daughters and fathers the Moabites and the Ammonites; both nations that became enemies of Israel. Huh – well done Abram! God obviously needed your help!! Who Can Blame Him? Well, who can blame Abram? He is in his late seventies now on a journey to nowhere and Sarai is no spring chicken either, I have to tell you. And God gives him this utterly incongruous, impossible promise and Abram is aching inside. "God, what are You doing?" Can you relate to that? I can! Let's have a look at the defining moment in Abram's journey. It begins in Genesis chapter 15, verse 1: After these things the Word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Don't be afraid, Abram, I am your shield. Your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me for I continue childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer, son of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the Word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir. No one but a son coming from your very own body shall be your heir.” God brought him outside and said, “Look toward the heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then the Lord said to him, “So shall your descendants be!” And Abram believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. I reckon this is one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible. Is Abram a man of faith? Absolutely! But he is struggling – he has tried everything he can do in his own strength and he can't make this promise from God happen and time is marching on. So through his doubt, he ends up with plan C or D or whatever he is up to. How does God respond – with rebuke, with punishment, with discipline? God brought him outside and said, “Look toward the heaven and count the start, if you are able to count them.” Then God said “So will your descendants be! Isn't it beautiful? You know, the Milky Way when you get away from the smog and the lights of the city is just the most awesome thing – there are so many stars out there – it almost looks like clouds. Trillions of stars – this is the love of God! And he believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Abram's faith meant that God's righteousness became part of who he was. It's a theme the Apostle Paul picks up in Romans chapter 4 and in Galatians chapter 3 in the New Testament, much later. See I struggle with the rose coloured glasses that Paul and others in the New Testament use to look back on Abraham. They paint him as this paragon of virtue; this great man of faith. Hebrews chapter 11, beginning at verse 8: By faith Abraham, when he was called to go to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he didn't know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the Promised Land like a stranger in a foreign country, for he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith Abraham, even though he was past age and Sarah herself was barren, was enabled to become a father. That's great but what about all of Abraham blunders? What about his lack of faith? He goes to God and says to God, "What will You give me? What will You show me? I can't see it – I'm losing hope." See, Abraham was human – Abraham had human failures and he made mistakes just like you and me - but the answer is in what we just read in Genesis. How is it that despite all of Abraham's blunders and doubts, God's plan still came to fruition? Because Abraham: “believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness.” Abraham believed – he didn't do it perfectly – but he believed and this was counted by God as righteousness. The righteousness of God when we believe, He forgives our sins – He forgets them. “As far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.” You see, that's why in the New Testament it doesn't talk about Abraham's mistakes because God has forgiven them and they are not relevant. That's how God deals with Abraham's human failings. This is the defining moment in Abraham's journey: he believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. This night that was like any other; he was in his tent; he was struggling; he was praying; he was saying, ‘God, what are you doing?' And God just touches him and brings him outside and says, “Look up at the stars; as many as are there so numerous will be your descendants.” It's not about what Abraham did or didn't do. The defining moment is about God's grace! And come and look with me exactly how imperfectly Abraham believed. Come and see with me how human and frail his faith actually is. He is credited with righteousness – God speaks to him and right on the back of that, just two verses later, in Genesis chapter 15, verse 8, begins this: But he said “O Lord, God, how am I to know I shall possess it?” And God said to him, “Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle dove and a young pigeon.” He brought God all those things and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other but he did not cut the birds in two. And when the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abraham drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abraham and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Know this for certain that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs and they shall be slaves there and they shall be oppressed there for four hundred years but I will bring judgement on the nation that they serve and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for you yourself, you shall go with your ancestors in peace and you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” When the sun had gone down and it was dark, and a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day (listen to this) On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying, “To your descendants I give this land – from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates and the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites and the Kadmonites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Raphaim and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Girgashites and the Jebusites.” See, in the face of further doubt from Abraham, God gives him this vision and he makes an unbreakable promise; a covenant; a promise from God Himself to Abraham. The Last Laugh Just as well, this covenant from God was an unbreakable promise because what happens next, after the stars thing and the vision and the promise, would have been the final straw for me if I had been God. Have a look at the next Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian slave girl whose name was Hagar and Sarai said to Abram, “You see the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go into my slave girl; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of his wife Sarai, so after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian; her slave girl and gave her to her husband Abraham as a wife. He went into Hagar and she conceived and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you. I gave my slave girl to you to embrace and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me.” Ok, men had more than one wife in those days but people haven't changed that much. Wives, how happy would you be with this outcome? Your husband sleeping with a slave girl and then all of a sudden the slave girl is pregnant. Can you see how perverted this is? And the son that Hagar bore was Ishmail and he became the father of the Arab world! Gee, that worked out brilliantly, didn't it? And so Abram, left to his own devices would have lurched from one blunder to the next but now the bit that really gets me about this story, is the ending. Both Abram and Sarai get to the point – I mean this has been going on for years now; decades where they just end up laughing at God's promises. I mean they are so ridiculous; they are so impossible – have a look – Abram first in Genesis chapter 17, verse 15: God said to Abram, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai anymore but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her and she will give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah who is ninety years old bear a child?” And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmail might live in Your sight.” And God said, “No, but your wife Sarah shall bear you a son and you shall name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.” And then Sarah's turn next! God appears to Abraham in the form of three men and those men said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you in due season and your wife Sarah shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance, behind them. Now Abraham and Sarah, they were old and advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, “After I have grown old and my husband is old, shall I have the pleasure?” See, can you blame Abraham and Sarah for laughing at God? I mean if you don't laugh you will cry. It has been twenty five years – they headed away on this fool's errand into the blue yonder. Abraham is over a hundred – Sarah is over ninety – come on God, what do You think You are doing? But let's see how it ends! Genesis chapter 21: The Lord dealt with Sarah just as He had said and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken. Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah had borne. Do you know what the word "Isaac" means? It means "he laughs" – you see God had the last laugh! They both laughed at God's promises and God gives them a son called Isaac and God has the last laugh! It's the laughter of God's grace. And when you look back on this journey, what was the defining moment? See, what you and I want to look at is say: "What do I have to do….what do I have to do? What do I have to do to get God's favour?" Isn't that what we are always thinking? And you look at all of Abraham's blunders and you see all the mistakes he made but in his heart he believed and it was reckoned unto him by God as righteousness. His faith trumped his failures! Let me say that again ... Abraham's faith trumped his failures! People came to Jesus years later and they said, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” And Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in the One whom He has sent.” Do you get it? The defining moment for Abraham was God's gracious, loving, powerful, impossible, unbreakable, ridiculous, only God could ever do it, take it forever….promise. And in his heart Abraham believed. That's the bit that God saw and took and used and blessed Abraham through. That's why the New Testament writers can completely ignore the failures of Abraham because God….God had forgotten them a long time ago. God had decided to overlook them a long time ago. Abraham was not a perfect man – Abraham was human just like you and me. You make blunders in your life; I make blunders in my life. What does God look at? He looks at whether we put our trust in Him through Jesus Christ. God not only forgave Abraham and Sarah but He cleaned up their mess along the way so that His plan would be fulfilled and realised for His glory. Look again at the defining moment in Abraham's life…Genesis chapter 15, verses 5 and 6: God brought Abraham outside and said, “Look up toward the heaven. Count the stars if you are able to count them.” Then God said to him, “So shall your descendants be. And Abraham believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. What do I have to do to do the works of God? To believe in the One whom He sent; His Son, Jesus Christ!

Ep. 320: Can a Paleo or AIP Lifestyle Manage Diabetes? In this episode, Stacy and Sarah go beyond diet as a way to prevent or manage diabetes, exploring why Paleo and AIP lifestyle factors like activity, stress management, and sleep are critical components. Sarah also shares a list of her top nutrients picks for improving insulin sensitivity. Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 320: Can a Paleo or AIP Lifestyle Manage Diabetes? (0:00) Intro (0:40) News and Views Welcome back! According to Sarah, the best way to do a podcast is in PJs! Over 6 years of TPV podcasts! Shout out to the listener Stacy met at the Queen City Mischief and Magic festival in VA! If you're a Harry Potter fan, mark your calendar for next year's festival! Sarah realizes she doesn't need to be coy about transitioning into the podcast topic because listeners always read the episode title before listening to the podcast. (10:58) Question from Kayla: "Hi Stacy and Sarah! I loved your recap podcast! I'm writing because I haven't seen a podcast yet about diabetes and AIP. I did listen to the insulin one, but I'm specifically wondering how AIP could be helpful to a diabetic. I had gestational diabetes with all four of my pregnancies, progressively worsening with each one until my last which was very hard to control. Unsurprisingly, I am now struggling with high blood sugar even though my baby was born 9 months ago. I've seen that diabetes is an autoimmune condition, but I really don't understand the mechanics so it's hard for me to be motivated to stick to the AIP diet. Would you be able to discuss that more on your podcast? Can Sarah please geek out on my behalf? Thanks so much for your amazing work!" Sarah geeks out with general diabetes statistics Estimated 9.3% of the American population has diabetes. Type II Diabetes accounts for 95% of diabetes in America and Type I accounts for the remaining 5%. (13:17) The difference between Type I and Type II Diabetes Type I Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system is attacking the beta cells, which are the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Type II Diabetes is a diet and lifestyle disease where the pancreas can still make insulin, but the body becomes less and less responsive to it until it's unable to manage blood sugar levels. Also known as insulin resistance. Because Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition, Sarah recommends following the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) in addition to the other suggestions in this podcast. Traditional recommendations from American Diabetes Association for regulating insulin is "almost good," according to Sarah. Sarah likes their guidelines for measured carbohydrates, eating carbohydrates with protein, fat, and fiber, and focusing on whole food carbohydrates, but disagrees with their recommendations to eat whole grains and vegetable oils. One study shows that the Paleo Diet does a better job at regulating blood sugar than the Mediterranean Diet. Another study shows the Paleo Diet was more effective at improving glucose control and lipid profiles than the American Diabetes Association diet. Currently, no studies looking at the long term effects of the Paleo Diet on diabetes. (30:03) Lifestyle factors like activity, stress management, and sleep may have even more of an impact on insulin sensitivity than diet. Activity improves the body's insulin sensitivity receptors, both the number of receptors and their sensitivity. One study in healthy adults showed a 67% increase in amount of insulin needed to shuttle glucose out of the blood after 5 days of bedrest. People who are overweight and obese have an even greater increase in the amount of insulin needed. Sedentary periods also increase blood pressure, cholesterol, and other symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Taking a 2 minute activity break every 20 minutes can negate these effects. This can be as simple as getting up and moving around! More muscle mass equals more insulin sensitivity, which means there's benefit to doing muscle building exercises. Neither weight training nor cardio will negate the negative effects of sitting at a desk all day. (39:43) Chronic stress and acute stress are big factors in determining insulin sensitivity. Our fight or flight response regulates which bodily systems are prioritized. If we're constantly stressed our body isn't focusing on the immune system, digestion, reproductive functions, protein synthesis, bone formation, and regulating blood sugar. Chronic stress directly causes insulin resistance via cortisol. Researchers say chronic stress may be the number one contributor to metabolic system. Even acute stress causes insulin resistance and hyperglycemia because it's creating readily available energy for running away or other survival mechanisms. Sarah recommends working on resilience activities and managing stress. Practice saying "no," delegating, spending time in nature, cuddling, laughter, yoga, meditation, and down time. Stacy asks how these studies are measuring stress. Sarah says researchers are measuring cortisol levels and analyzing participant questionnaires. (49:02) Not getting enough sleep is a huge risk factor for diabetes. If you get less than 6 hours per night on a regular basis, you increase your risk of Type II diabetes by 50%! And you increase your risk of either diabetes and/or pre-diabetes by 2.4 times. Studies have shown that even a single night of lost sleep will make you insulin resistant. One study showed for every 30 minutes of weekday sleep debt the risk of obesity is 17% higher and the risk of insulin resistance is 39% higher - even if you're getting 15 hours of sleep on the weekends. (52:56) Stacy and Sarah discuss nutrients that are particularly important for insulin sensitivity. First off, always check with a health care provider before taking even a supplement. Some supplements do not mix with certain drugs. Vitamin D. Get your levels tested and supplement within the functional range of Vitamin D. Then retest your levels every 3 months. Vitamin D levels can change seasonally. Zinc. Important for glycemic control and the immune system. Ideally get it from foods like shellfish and nuts and seeds. Vitamin K2. Important for blood sugar management and can even reduce your risk of getting diabetes. Best sources are grass-fed meat, organ meat, grass-fed dairy. Chromium. More relevant for those who haven't been getting a lot of nutrients and may be just starting a Paleo Diet. Magnesium. Some studies show supplementation can improve glycemic control, but it's hit or miss. Data is stronger showing adequate intake of magnesium can prevent diabetes. Alpha Lipoic Acid. Has been shown in clinical trials to improve insulin sensitivity in those with Type II Diabetes. Berberine. Food sources can be hard to find. One source is Oregon Grapes, but they're only found in the Pacific Northwest. A couple studies have shown Berberine can be as effective as certain diabetes drugs. Curcumin (from turmeric). Anti-inflammatory. Some evidence showing it can prevent diabetes in people who are at a higher risk. Cinnamon. Also anti-inflammatory. Can reduce cholesterol by 18% and reduce blood sugar levels by 24%. Both Cassia and Ceylon cinnamon has this effect. Be warned, do not just eat a tablespoon of cinnamon - it will hurt! Conjugated Linoleic Acid (food, not supplement). Can be found in grass-fed meat and dairy from ruminant animals. Can significantly lower risk of diabetes. There is also preliminary evidence (some mixed, not conclusive) for blood sugar lowering properties of: CoQ10 Aloe Ashwagandha Ginkgo Green coffee bean extract Glucosamine Black cohosh Rhodiola Reishi mushroom Tart cherry juice White mulberry Fenugreek Milk thistle Ginseng Inositol Stacy suggests one way to get some of these amazing nutrients: FourSigmatic Mushroom Hot Cocoa with Reishi and Cinnamon. Is Sarah going to tell Amanda why Jessica Biel murdered that guy in 'The Sinner'? Is the season of 'The Great British Baking Show' that just arrived on Netflix still as charming and soothing with new hosts and a new judge? Can Sarah sing like Lady Gaga in the 'A Star Is Born' trailer? The answer to at least one of those questions is yes! Shows discussed: The Great British Bake-Off, The Sinner, Castle Rock
First, Sorry to everyone for the delay in posting! Unfortunately, the increased violence in Chicago has made my criminal defense job pretty stressful this summer, and I've been low on editing time. We will do our best to return to one episode a month this fall. This month, we review Westworld, a show that offers up really important questions like...Are robots capable of the mens rea for murder? Can Dr. Ford use the technicalities of software end user license agreements to avoid all liability for his murder bots? What can selfie monkey teach us about whether Dolores can claim copyright for those pretty paintings she makes? Can Sarah and Meredith geek out about AI capabilities so much that half this episode is weird tangents? Ep. 257: Live Show Part 3: Not-So-Rapid Fire In this episode, it's the third and final part of our LIVE show! We go rapid fire with the questions, but still long winded with the answers! Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 257: Live Show Part 3: Not-So-Rapid Fire Intro (0:00) Welcome to the live show, this is Part 3 of our show! Listen to Part 2 of the live show here and Part 1 of the live show here! Question 1: Christine asks, how do you find out which vitamin and mineral defficiencies are associated with your autoimmune disease? Sarah: Some studies have shown deficiencies, others have just shown improvements with supplementation, but not very many of these studies group autoimmune diseases and study deficiency differences across all of them Right now, there are incomplete data showing which is most important "Frequent flyers" are Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Zinc and Omega-3 Fats. You can also look at what the immune system uses, Vitamin A and D and Zinc are key for regulatory actions The immune system's proteins need methylation, so B6, B9, B12 are key for that as are Vitamin C and E as antioxidants Iron, Copper, Magnesium (maybe more minerals) All these have key role in the immune system, so it's unsurprising that these deficiencies are linked with diseases Question 2: If my children (an older daughter and a baby son) never try gluten and dairy, how will I know if they have an intolerance or Celiac Disease? Stacy: we decided to just assume that our kids have it, given our family history, and to not test If it's important for you to test Celiac, you'll have to expose your kids Sarah: chances are very good that your daughter (who was never exposed) will rebel and eat some gluten eventually, and it's ok to wait for that challenge Stacy: reminder that some people can have issues with gluten and no physical symptoms. Stacy and Cole just get emotional and depressed when they're reacting They can't tell you to fix anything if you DO get a positive result—you just have to avoid it anyway. Sarah: research shows there's a lower risk of Celiac if gluten is introduced while breastfeeding, and the longer you breastfeed the lower the risk, so introducing to a baby is more backed by research In the same situation, Sarah would probably include a little wheat a couple of times toward the end of breastfeeding (around 2 years) so they can communicate whether something is wrong In peanut allergy studies, babies were fed a very small amount to help reduce allergies, so it doesn't have to be a huge serving Question 3: Jessica's son did the cheek swab DNA test, with her second child she's just said "we have Celiac." Is the DNA test helpful? Sarah: studies of people with Celiac susceptibility genes, HLADQ2 and HLADQ8, have shown that people without Celiac who also have digestive symptoms still have a zonulin response to gluten. They're still getting a leaky gut in response to gluten, even though it's not Celiac 60% of the population has one or both of these genes, which explains non-Celiac gluten sensitivity Having one of those risk genes is a compelling argument not to mess with Gluten, because of the risk of a leaky gut reaction Question 4: The Dr. from the Gluten Free Society's website claims there are two other genes associated with Gluten sensitivity, HLADQ1 and HLADQ3, which no standard Celiac test looks for. Any other research on this? Sarah hasn't seen anything on that, but she's never specifically looked through the research for that 3% of Celiacs don't have HLADQ2 or HLADQ8, that 3% could have that other selection of genes Already more than a dozen HLA variants linked with autoimmune diseases Question 5: Can Sarah share her Paleo road trip snacks? She didn't try to eat on the road, she packed picnic lunches Grassfed organic all-beef hot dogs from Wal-Mart! On sale for $3.50/lb Sarah had some canned salmon mix for herself Her husband had leftover cooked salmon They had a huge baggie of carrots, celery, and cucumber, apples Boulder Canyon Avocado Oil potato chips EPIC Snack Strips Rice crackers for snacks Paleo Angel Power Balls Some 85% chocolate (which they didn't open, but had just in case) Water to drink Sarah made a stew for dinner, which she heated up with a hot plate warmer thing Stacy Her family has done grocery store rotisserie chickens or chicken strips from Trader Joe's, because they're easy to pull apart and share Sarah On the way back, they'll probably try to find a burger place Hard to find grass-fed, but places that clean the grill, lettuce wrap or do gluten free buns would be ideal Overall, she has a cooler in the back and a snack bag between the kids It's the same snacks they use at home, but she always makes sure to include protein, like EPIC Strips She always includes raw veggies, fruit and something sweet, like Power Balls When everybody's miserable having a treat is really helpful for mood Sarah's oldest loves Cliff Kit's Organic Bars and her youngest loves raisins Stacy Her kids like Chomp's Beef Sticks and Roam Beef Sticks Her family doesn't love the EPIC Bars, but they really like the EPIC Bites Question: Do either Sarah or Stacy use a water filter, and which one? Matt: tap water is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. The fact that we have potable water delivered to our house for cheap, any time we want, is great. It goes through so much processing to get to potability in our houses that he really feels like honoring tap water by drinking it Sarah She agrees, but a lot of the members of her family have chloramine sensitivity (her brother missed a year of school due to this sensitivity) so Sarah has always used at least a Brita filter Her municipal water is Dasani so that's basically what they're drinking if they use a charcoal filter Sarah recently won a reverse-osmosis filter, but she feels like she has to add back in so many minerals to make it a helpful source of minerals Sarah thinks we should remineralize our tap water - she uses Trace Minerals and EM Drops Mostly adding Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium and some trace minerals. Most people (yes even Paleo peeps) are mineral deficient She's adding probably up to 20% of her family's RDA to their water Reminder: Sarah comes from socialist Canada and sort of automatically trusts the government, but recognizes that doesn't necessarily reflect the American experience Pay attention to stuff, there's plenty of contaminated water out there, so you might want to make sure your municipal water is safe BUT she thinks tap water is fine Matt When he was growing up in Mass., well water is pretty hit-or-miss, so his dentist prescribed fluoride to everyone He and his brother (who did not have well water) had stained teeth from too much fluoride So, it's just a matter of knowing what's in your water Sarah There's not a lot of evidence that fluoride is causing health problems, but also little evidence it's helping dental health Fluoridated toothpaste, on the other hand, has some really compelling science backing its efficacy There's some science to show that fluoride might sequester in the pineal gland and over 60, 70, 80 years decrease the amount of melatonin secreted by that gland, linked with sleep disturbances in the elderly, but that's sort of a big leap at this point But you can take that out with a normal carbon filter if you are concerned Rate and Review us! Ep. 238: What's a FODMAP and Why Do Some People Avoid Them? In this episode, Stacy and Sarah talk about FODMAPs. What are they and why are some people avoiding them? And what can you eat that ISN'T high in FODMAPs? Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 238: What's a FODMAP and Why Do Some People Avoid Them? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Hello, listeners! It's Stacy's turn to be enthusiastic! We absolutely recommend The School for Good and Evil! Great tween/teen reader fantasy! Also awesome on Audible! Sarah's daughter read all of The Lord of the Rings in 9 days! That's absolute insanity! Can Sarah's daughter, 10, read The Hunger Games? You weigh in! Also recommended: His Dark Materials It's hard to find great books at her advanced reading level that are appropriate for her age level. Recommendations? Today's Topic: FODMAPs! Wendy asks: "I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia & fructose malabsorption. I was eating a FODMAP diet for a few years before starting Paleo 14 months ago. I combined AIP & FODMAP 8 months ago, and while I have felt much better, I'm not symptom free and still often have stomach pain in the lower left abdomen. This pain seems to be more frequent lately. Have I missed something?" (11:09) FODMAPs are poorly absorbed short chain carbohydrates. The acronym stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, and Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are fructose carbohydrates and sugar alcohols. They are loved by bacteria, but not absorbed in the small intestines Beans are a typical FODMAP rich food, which is where the song comes from. Finian recited the rhyme. He didn't know it before now, but now won't stop saying it! FODMAPs feed the bacteria in your gut, leading to a bacteria bloom. That's why you get bloating, gas, and other GI problems. People with FODMAP issues typically have poor gut health, gut dysbiosis, or a genetic predisposition. Problems with FODMAPs can lead to small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Low FODMAP diets have been used to treat IBS and SIBO successfully. But the science seems to indicate that this is just symptom management. The real issue is that FODMAP loving bacteria are actually good bacteria that we need. Just not too many! A low FODMAP diet could eventually lead to a poor gut microbiome diversity. The new recommendation is to follow the low FODMAP diet for 2-4 weeks. Afterwards, go with gut healing like veggies, low-inflammatory diets, broth, L-Glutamine, and seafood. Then, add back in FODMAPs to tolerance. It help grow back these great beneficial bacteria. If it's not going well, there could be further issues like infection or other disorders. See a doctor! Current knowledge indicates that no diet can cure SIBO and only medical intervention can cure it. See a doctor! If you need guidance, see Paleo Mom Consulting! Why are some veggies like garlic, onions, artichokes, all the brassicas, etc. on the FODMAP list? Well, they do contain a lot of fructans, which are fructose rich fibers like inulin Sugar alcohols or polyols are in apples, watermelon, cherries, mushrooms, stone fruits, avocados, etc. Katherine asks: "What are the best resources for following Paleo AND low FODMAP? I'm struggling big time on what the heck to eat and when I look for answers, I can't seem to find a combo of the two 'diets'. Only one or the other. Very frustrating. I'm hungry!" (27:38) In The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook, everything is labeled with whether it is low FODMAP or substitutions or if it can't be low FODMAP because many autoimmune people have GI issues. Aglaee Jacob of Radicata Nutrition is the expert on this. Get her book Digestive Health with Real Food because she really knows how to navigate this issue! When you're paleo, many of the high FODMAP foods are already gone! Avoid the onion family, the cruciferous vegetables and things like squash. Further, you just have to play with dose! If you still have issues with FODMAPs after a 2-4 week intervention, it's time to call in the experts! One of the cool things about FODMAP issues, is that it's one of the conditions with GI health you can actually cure it! Bill from Primal Palate shared his story with FODMAPs here and here. There are components to the gut health issue: getting the digestive enzymes right, getting the bacteria right, and getting the healthy cells right. All of those things are helped with a nutrient dense, low inflammatory diet, reducing stress and getting sleep! When Sarah did her nutrient dense diet, she never even needed to limit her FODMAPs. That might even do it for you too! Rate and Review us! Goodbye! Outro (45:12) Support us by shopping through links on our sidebars, please!

At last, the one person from the "Brains" tribe that should have been first to go, finally got the boot. The funniest part was that it was apparently a difficult decision for the remaining tribemates to make. After being sent to the very bottom of her tribe, Morgan still remains as a lethal adversary. Jeremiah is truly no match for her. The controlling alliance in the Brawn tribe fell into the classic pattern of an ultra successful tribe and decided they could manage throwing a challenge to ensure future control. Fortunately for them, the "Brains" tribe is so staggeringly incompetent at physical challenges that they were worse than Brawn even when they were trying to lose. Who would you have kept: J'Tia or Spencer? Can you think of a worse tribe than this Brains tribe? What did you think of Sarah's choice to throw the challenge? Will it come back to haunt her? Who does the tribal shuffle stand to help the most? Can Sarah escape from Tony's deception? Will Cliff or Lindsey suspect they attempted to throw the challenge? Who do you think will be next to go?
