In this episode of the show, we discuss the upcoming retirement of Tim Southee from the Test arena, plus quickly whip around some of the white-ball series going on around the world and the off-field challenges threatening to disrupt the ICC Champions Trophy in February 2025. We start with Tim Southee's announcement and a potential fairytale finish in the World Test Championship final, before touching on the Black Caps' squad to face England, which looks likely to feature a Test debut for at least one of Nathan Smith or Jacob Duffy. Then we move to Sri Lanka, Australia, the West Indies and South Africa to talk about Haris Rauf's speed, Adam Zampa's hair, Jacob Bethell's potential and India's T20 dominance in 2024, before examining the unfortunate off-field situation developing in the lead-up to the ICC Champions Trophy. We'll be back in your feed soon with a separate episode on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Test series, then again next week with a full preview of the Black Caps v England series, followed closely by a review of the Aus v India Test in Perth. Season 16, Episode 29: The foundation of Australia's white-ball success in the post-Covid era has been the dependability of their star spinner, Adam Zampa. A key member of two World Cup winning teams, he's never been better or in greater demand. Adam caught up with him at The Oval in London where he's letting the good times roll with the Oval Incincibles in The Hundred tournament. Bits and Pieces somehow continues into its 134th week on the trot, and Sanju Samson must be quite miserable about this. The pod was recorded just as Samson made a rare appearance in the India XI, and in our extreme excitement for the man, may have ended up jinxing him into a first-ball duck a few hours later. From Joylord Gumbie, Joyless Gambhir, Sumaar Joseph, and Chamari Athapattu, we have all the major cricketing heroes of the week covered. We marvel at SKY's versatility, and Max talks about more T20 leagues than you knew existed. This podcast features a vicious Adam Zampa googly, a logical puzzle that isn't quite first-class, and casts wild aspersions on Mike Atherton's prowess as a player. Follow us on X 1. There's a lot to like about Australia's T20 campaign. Zampa shone and Cummins took a hat-trick as the Aussies thumped Bangladesh. Warner soared as Head continued to improve against spin. In this episode of the show, we look back at the first four games of the Super 8 stage at the Men's T20 World Cup, which saw Australia, England, India and South Africa record victories. We start the show by discussing Australia's win against Bangladesh - a game that included a 'Pat trick' as Captain Cummins collected three wickets from three balls across two overs. We also saw Adam Zampa and David Warner continue their good form, and explored Baldy's nervous nature despite Australia's history of success. From there we move to India's game against Afghanistan, which was highlighted by Suryakumar Yadav's impressive fifty and then Jasprit Bumrah reducing Afghanistan to 23-3 in the early stages of their innings. We pile praise on these two T20 stars, and marvel in particular at Bumrah, whose ability to sum up conditions in an instant is second-to-none. Third up in our match review was England's performance against the West Indies. Was it a statement win? How fun is it to watch Jonny Bairstow and Phil Salt in full swing? Do both sides need to make changes to their bowling lineups? And can the West Indies still make the semi-finals? In the fourth and final game covered, we saw South Africa's top order finally hit some form - this time against the USA, despite a strong start from Saurabh Netravalkar. Quinton de Kock got busy, and the Proteas kicked off the Super 8s in style. We round out the show with more praise for the USA, some crystal ball gazing about what the future might hold for them, and also discuss the news that Kane Williamson and Lockie Ferguson are set to decline Black Caps contracts. Is the sky falling for New Zealand? Or could this actually be a good thing? We are planning to record regularly throughout the next phases of the tournament, so expect to be in your feed every few days through to the final match. In this episode of the show, we look back at a busy week of games at the T20 World Cup, which saw India and the USA beat Pakistan, Afghanistan beat New Zealand, plus Australia and South Africa take control of their groups. We start the show by discussing the low-scoring thriller between India and Pakistan, which saw Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and others shine as India roared home to secure a crucial victory in Group A. We discuss Saurabh Netravalkar and USA's Super Over tactics, whether there's still a chance for Pakistan and wonder why teams are unable to turn good batting starts into big scores. In Group B we heap praise on Scotland's performances so far, before turning our attention to the marquee matchup between Australia and England. Baldy enjoyed David Warner's control of the powerplay, Binksy couldn't understand England's tactics and Adam Zampa's consistency came into the spotlight. As attention turned to Group C, it was Stu and Raj's turn to show their frustration, as we looked back at an uncharacteristically poor performance by the Black Caps, particularly in the field. We talked team selection, build up, whether they can bounce back against the West Indies or if their tournament is as good as over already. To round out the show, we try to predict who will make it out of Group D, with South Africa taking charge and the Netherlands perhaps the most impressive of the other sides so far. Can Sri Lanka find a way back? What about Bangladesh? We are planning to record regularly throughout the tournament, particularly as we approach the Super 8 and knockout stages. Note: Bit of a problem with Stu's audio for the final 5-6 minutes of the episode. Recording remotely is presenting a few challenges, but we'll get there in the end!The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 is here, and the Top Order Podcast has you covered with regular game reviews and recaps. In this episode of the show, we discuss the Day 16 match between Australia and Pakistan.David Warner and Mitchell Marsh set the platform for Australia with big hundreds after Warner was dropped early in his innings by Usama Mir, and the Aussies made 367 - but should it have been even more?Abdullah Shafique and Imam ul-Haq then did the same for Pakistan, combining for a century opening stand and it seemed like we were set for a classic run chase, but wickets fell too regularly and when Adam Zampa dismissed Babar Azam and then Iftikhar Ahmed, the total proved out of reach to give Australia a much needed win. We'll be back again tomorrow with more news and views, but until then please also take the time to give us a like, follow, share or subscribe on all our channels (@toporderpod on Twitter & Facebook, and @thetoporderpodcast on Instagram & YouTube) and a (5-Star!) review at your favourite podcast provider, or tell a friend to download. World Cup Daily 2023, Day 12: Two World Cup finals have involved this pairing, and two World Cup campaigns this year depended heavily on this result. Both teams were winless heading into it, and Kusal Perera joined with Pathum Nissanka to give Sri Lanka a dominant start, before Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc made their presence felt after Pat Cummins and David Warner opened things up. Then it was down to Dilshan Madushanka in a blistering new-ball spell - would it be enough? Australia's World Cup campaign has finally clicked into gear with an impressive five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Lucknow. Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa starred with the ball to lift Australia off the bottom of the points table. Recapping all the action for you is Adam Peacock and Brad Haddin. Season 2, Ep 6: Reloading lost episodes from the early Final Word. In its second season in early 2016, The Final Word got spicy - it covered white-ball cricket. Having only been about Test matches to this date, Australia's tour of New Zealand for Brendon McCullum's farewell series was enough to make us change our style. The Big Bash was at its peak, the first WBBL had been played, the World T20 was approaching, Shane Watson captained his country again, Virat Kohli had another crazy Australian tour, and a young leg-spinner named Adam Zampa made an impression. Meanwhile, Shane Warne was on reality TV complaining about Steve Waugh. This season was originally recorded for the ABC. The Ashes is upon us, and this time it really is The Ashes. Of cricket. Literally. The flaming, dying embers of the game as we know it, which then become actual ashes, followed by bulk bunce in Saudi Arabia or whatever. Nah, not really, because Stokesian captaincy and the Bazball revolution are here to Save Cricket, which if nothing else, permits the hosts early moral superiority points in the 8-week War Of Words which precedes the 6 week Test series. Also, Australia plays India for the actual championship of the thing, which when you think about it makes sense as a warm-up to the main event. The main event being a golf trip in Liverpool. Normal and good. In and around all that discussion is Barney Ronay and Adam Zampa. Onto more familiar matters – the schedule for Australia's home summer has been released with Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa all coming out. Cricket Australia is offering early bird discounts before June 6 - all you have to do is sign up to the Australian Cricket Family at cricket.com.au/acf. Happy to be offering discounts on bunce for a day out at the cricket. Get around it, and it, you. In a circular motion etc. We also talk IPL, ICC distributions, and the social and cultural undercurrents at play on the major existential matters facing cricket, according to two blokes off the Internet. An English cuck writes in for #AskTGC about God knows what in a story about France and a West Indian, and we finish with a visceral minute via “Ginger Century”, who makes a strange, potentially northern English, noise at the end. Can anyone tell us what that noise was? Not in a “secret sound” way – genuinely don't know what the noise was. And of course you would take Faf's rig, you TOW-TAL SLAG! Budgy is backing us big time this English summer, get around them at budgysmuggler.com Limited edition merch available: gradecricketer.com Live show tickets available in Melbourne, Birmingham, and one London show: gradecricketer.com You get discounts, early access and an exclusive podcast every week when you sign up at patreon.com/gradecricketer Learn more about your ad choices.
